I dont know much about ram. My last build i just bought some g skill ripjaws or whatever its called. However it seems like you should only use 2 sticks. At what point is ram useless? Say for instance if i had 32gb of ram in total. What would be the point in upgrading to 64gb of ram? Would there be a noticeable performance change or is it a waste of money? At what point does ram become obsolete? When is it too much ram?

>DLSS allows midrange cards to easily drive 4K displays.
Not those with insufficient vram and don't tell a revisionist story of a $600 MSRP 4070 being "midrange"
>Back in the day I hated V-sync, especially since you had to buy overpowered hardware to get a locked 60 FPS with V-sync, as any drop below that would cause the game to drop to 30 FPS
Custom FPS cap software has been available for ages, v-sync is for high refresh displays, also please come up with a time before the advent and popularization of TAA where midrange hardware was insufficient to play a game it came out alongside.
>by RTX 60, midrange will be running path tracing at full resolution 1080p, which can be reconstructed to a higher resolution like 4K.
If you really think Nvidia would make Rubin midrange more than ~50% faster than 4060/4060 ti then you're more deluded than I thought
>and of course Radeon doesn't have DLSS to assist with performance
It shouldn't need any kind of upscaling technique and that's been the issue for years now is devs using it as a crutch to not implement any kind of optimization work for their games the amount of games launching in this state is staggering compared to just a decade ago, EE is the exception in a sea of shit.

>Also how easy is it to fuck something up while building a pc?
It is pretty easy NOT to fuck up your pc. Some advice i have for you if you decide to build your own (which i think everyone should do) is to relax and take it easy. If you dont understand something then dont rush it. You have all the time in the world. You will probably fuck something up if you rush it. Try to understand what you're doing before you're doing it. Really. Building a pc isnt that difficult but some things i had to youtube because it wasnt in the manuals such as where to connect the cables and where to connect the led cables from the case to the motherboard. It might be better for you who knows but dont rush it. I didnt fuck it up and i knew absolutely nothing about building a pc. As i said the hardest part for me was connecting cables after i had built the thing.

I also didnt wanna accidentally fuck anything up so what I did was tell my budget in places like this and ask for builds/advice (usually people will select a list of parts on pcpartpicker) and then go to a site with a good reputation where you select those parts and pay a small fee and they will build it and ship it to you. Out of laziness I even had them install windows for me and do benchmark tests to confirm it works well before they sent it out. From my experience you will get a better result for the money you pay.

>I'd like to build a pc but I don't want to accidentally destroy a part that costs hundreds of dollars
Many shops have "build your pc" option, especially if you order most of the parts from them. You pick the parts you want, they assemble everything and also can advice if there's something wrong with your build.
As for the prebuild - I wouldn't buy it. The CPU is good enough but it's maximum you can squeeze from AM4. 3060 still holds 1080p but barely, wasted money for Windows license, etc. I would flip burgers a bit longer and build something like

Building a PC is not that bad like that other anon said just dont rush it. The only way you can really fuck it up is by not being delicate and breaking pins or slots. Its hard to fuck up a PC build because most pieces just fit together like legos, putting square peg in square hole is usually enough but just be careful and read before you assemble, ive rushed builds and made some pretty funny mistakes because of it, my current build has a screw permanently fused to the mobo that doesnt fit in the case because I wasnt paying attention and jammed the wrong one in. Even as much of a dumbass as I was being the mistake caused no functionality difference.

I wouldnt get that prebuilt because its on the AM4 socket and basically has the max you can get out of it meaning if you ever want to upgrade your CPU or RAM you'll need to buy a new mobo too.

I tried to monitor the PSU voltages and they seem fine but I can't know if they suddenly drop the instant before the restart. I don't have another CPU or motherboard to test with, what can I try?
>>
>>103288297

>>103288434
Do you have any event logs? I'd assume temps are fine if it can run a stress test.

Got the H6 Flow and it comes with 3x 120mm fans.

Should I install some additional 120mm fans or is it okay for a Ryzen 7800x + RTX 4070?

Also apparently the fans are loud so maybe I should just get a new pack? In that case, should I get 3x140mm or 5x 120mm ?
>>
>>103288434
Swap in the spare CPU and see if it still reboots on idle
If it continues, swap the board out for the spare and put in your current CPU and test again
>>
>>103288455
I'd get more fans, a few intake bottom, if the case allows for it, a few exhaust in the top and back. You don't have to replace the case fans, the 7800x3d + 4080tis is not going to produce too much heat.
>>
>>103288455
Don't buy anything until you build the PC and bench it. If the temps and noise are acceptable after curve tuning you don't need any more. Those parts are going to be sub-300W in your most common workload (gaming) so 3 fans is almost certainly plenty.
>>
>>103288330
I'd buy one.

Nothing in the logs, temps are great, PSU is new, decent quality and oversized (850W for components that can't even draw 400W).
>>103288467
Read that again. I DON'T have any spares to test with.
>>
>>103288503
It is quite high end for gaming, more cooling is required for workstation builds, 7950x or 7900x. In terms of GPU, there is 7900xtx etc which consume more watts, so more cooling is required.

They are but they're also extremely efficient due to the advanced nodes and sensible stock power limits. The absolute top tier stuff does away with the second one and so might require more cooling. I say "might" because you get diminishing returns from adding fans - the internal case temp can't go any lower than the room ambient.

Looks like they do make an rgb version of the p14, thanks for the suggestion. Surprisingly expensive here in Aus though, $30-35 AUD each or $75 for the 3 pack puts it in more direct competition with the other 140mm rgb fans. For comparison the p14 maxes are only $17 each here.

Lowest-binned retail CPU for its platform and generation. As such, silicon quality could be anything from "basically a 7600x" to "dodged the trash can by a hair."
Not a hueg issue if you run it at stock, but since you wanna go passive, you probs should be undervolting, or otherwise reducing power draw, for best effect. In which case the better-binned 7600x will tend to offer superior performance and/or wattage, if you tell it to draw the same amount of power you would tell the 7600.

My point exactly. Moreover, most of that drop likely came from the first 2-3 fans you added.

I'll get a 5700X3D, a new SSD and RAM for my PC. Pic related are the specs
I want to get to 32GB ram but I can't find an identical Crucial memory. Can I mix ram with matching speed/latency (4x8GB) for enabling dual channel or should I get 2x16GB kit. It's the safer yet more expensive option.
I can get 2TB Kingston KC3000 $160, or 990 Pro for $185. I don't know if the additional $25 is worth it but might as well I think.
5700X3D is self explanatory. I got a Fuma 2 to cool it, I'll grab an MX-6 paste along with it.

>Can I mix ram with matching speed/latency
You can but probably shouldn't. Better to take the hit with a fresh kit - it won't be massive when you sell your old one.
Reason being that this is a DDR4 system running 3200C16 mystery meat. If you buy another kit there's good odds it'll have different ICs, Higher chance of needing manual tuning for stability. Given how cheap DDR4 is right now it's just not worth the headache.

>2TB Kingston KC3000 $160, or 990 Pro for $185. I don't know if the additional $25 is worth it...
Frankly even the KC3000 is overkill for gaming. Games aren't made of massive files so big sequential speeds don't improve your load times.
If you're in the US try these:
>MP44L $102
>SN770 $113 (may need a firmware update for W11)
>980Pro $120

The first anon has a bit of a point in that a 5700X3D with 2133 (your expected worst case from mix&match) will outperform a 5600 with 3200 but the price difference is so small that it's hard to justify the saving. A fresh 2*16GB 3200 kit should only be like $10 more than adding sticks and covers you for those edge cases where the cache doesn't. It's hard to beat that kind of return especially as games demand more data over time.

So I'm at a loss for what my next step should be. The fact that I could game without reboots and the 30 min benchmarks ran fine leads me to believe that my CPU and GPU should be fine.

My PSU was suspicious, but often the reboots were not really in high load situations, so I have my doubts.

Some anons suggested that my NVME drive could be the culprit. I checked for firmware updates but I already had the latest firmware.

I guess there is not much point but you can passively cool a 7800x3d with that thing no problem.
I also think you might be better off trying to cook up your own passive GPU somehow. Maybe use the morpheus 8069 on an efficient card like the 4070. Unless a 3050 is all you need.
For the PSU don't spend all that money on a passive one as an rm850x will not spin it's fan to power that. It doesn't start spinning until like 300w, 350w.

How much do modern CPUs really degrade? I'm not talking about the Intel housefire models, but it seems like every chip made in the last 5 years or so will slightly degrade over time to the point where, for example, it won't work with the same high memory frequency or will require a bit more voltage to be 100% stable. yes and no, "exclusive fullscreen" in DX12 games actually work like borderless but in a slightly different way to allow refresh rate/resolution swap (for use with DSR/DLDSR and others)

Help me pick an AM5 Mobo:
- need something decently high-end/futureproof, intend to keep until AM6, I'm okay with spending <600€ on it
- need POST code debug display and CPU-less BIOS updates
- need PCI-E X4 slot from chipset for 10gbe NIC
- the less fuckery with the GPU slot lane allocation, the better, I intend to use it with a 4090 and other TOTL GPUs
- has to work with FanControl
- an USB-C port with PD would be nice for Quest 3
- can be E-ATX
- audio doesn't matter

Current options, based on research:
- Asus X870E-E
- MSI X870E Carbon WiFi
- Gigabyte Aorus Master

I know it's anecdotal but my friends and I all built gaming PCs around 2019 and they're holding up fine. I also haven't seen any reports of degradation outside of the 13/14th gen fiasco.

Yes all fine. Frankly if you exclude the debug screen you could save like €200 and barely notice a difference. AM5 boards, especially the B/X models, are almost comically overbuilt.

Is there a reason why you are not considering ASRock Taichi/Lite or Nova?
They're quite a bit better than the ones you've selected there, cheaper, and I think fit all your requirements except for USB-C PD.

Well, I know the VRMs are all fine, but I'm not sure what other factors I should look out for. The I/O is good enough for my needs and I know all their software is dogshit.

The MSI and Gigabyte bundle the boards with some thermal progress, which I guess would be nice.

Unfortunately, they don't have an X4 PCI-E slot from the chipset. I would have to run my GPU at X8 if I want to use my NIC. ASRock was my first pick when I started my research. The 5gbps integrated NIC might be enough for my needs, but I already have the Intel x540 and the other boards meet all my requirements.
>>
>>103290074
The 800 series hasn't really been out long enough for knowledge of defects/problems to spread. Least of all because $300 motherboards are three niche-layers deep. To my knowledge there hasn't been any news about that sort of stuff yet so we're all basically going by specs and, indeed, by that metric they're all fine.
Historically, i.e. 600 series, Gigabyte has had the worst coil whine and MSI the worst boot times. Again, not sure if those translate. ASUS, as usual, offers the least features for your money but clearly you don't care to valuemaxx.

>>103290178
Running the card at x8 isn't a big issue. The 4090 isn't much hampered by PCIe2x16 and future top tier cards will be PCIe 5. Obviously you have the cash to just sidestep it but don't sweat it too much.

The carbon board is a complete shit show, just read the manual

The aorus 1 is overpriced and does not offer anything of consequence unless you overclock

The rog strix board is unironically better than the hero yet asus will fuck you over in terms of consumer support anyway

>>
>>103288081
RAM is pretty binary. You either have enough of it (in which case adding more typically doesn't help much) or you don't (in which case your performance will suck).

Should I worry about my pcie lanes if I use all three m.2 slots on an Asrock x870 Pro RS? I'm not planning on using gen 5 since there seems to still be some overheating problems associated with those drives.

Brainlet tier thinking. Almost nobody needs 10x USB 3 ports and USB 3 can cause interference with some wireless dongles. 2x USB 2.0 ports should still be useful for any board, even today.

I've read all the manuals.

All of them fuck you over if you want more than 1 gen 5 SSD. It's a limitation of the CPU. 24 CPU lanes in total, 16x for GPU, 4x for gen 5 SSD, 4x for chipset which bifurcates to the gen4 slots. Some mobos just offer the option to run 2x or 3x gen 5 SSDs if you are willing to give up your GPU lanes

Genuinely helped me understand why WD crap is so cheap. I will be taking it out for use as an external SSD when I have time.

There is a valid reason, have you ever heard of USB 3.x 2.4ghz interference? It's a real thing and it sucks, the more active USB 3 ports you got throwing off signal back there, the worse it gets. After looking at ALL I/O layouts for the last two gens, Asrock has the most balance short of the ProArt series. Still have SPDIF, they always implement dual USB 4 with DPAlt, and have a range of speed and power profiles for their USB ports so you use the best port for what you need. Makes sense! I don't want more interference back there./\ If you want something to complain about, go enjoy the trend of single USB 4 ports on $400 boards when Asrock puts dual USB 4 on its $200 boards, then talk about cheapening out! I use 4 USB 2.0 ports and it isn't an issue, if you want throughput, you should know where to get it. The only complaint I have: need more boards with Dual LAN, preferably 2.5gbe+10gbe like the ProArt.

Anons, I'm already dead set on the P14 Max fans, but I'm having second thoughts now. I took a second look at the Corsair LX140 fans.
The Arctic P14 Max has the best airflow (CFM) and static pressure. The LX has the best static pressure compared to the P14 Max and Corsair's own QX140, but loses to P14 Max on airflow.
I'm really OK with the P14 Max's looks, even if I lose the RGB that comes with the LX140.
But because my case is a Lian Li O11 EVO XL with Corsair QL120 fans (bought them during lockdown), I guess I'm a bit inclined towards aesthetics, even if I sacrifice a bit of performance.

NVIDIA is set to announce the 5000 series by January 2025. It's only a stone's throw away. Just celebrate the holidays until then.
Give your old PC a proper send-off once you get the new one.
Buy the 9800X3D, 64GB DDR5, and Gen 5 NVMe if budget still allows it.

I'm trying to build some kind of budget "living room" PC which will be used primarily as a NAS, but also for torrenting and light gaming on the TV. Here's what I came up with : https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/y7twVF (prices are in canadian monopoly money, some of our prices are awful up there, budget of approx. $1000)

What do you guys think?

I keep going back and forth between the 5700X and 7700X, there's a bundle deal here for the latter which would increase the build cost by about $200. I know there's no real upgrade path with AM4, but at the same time I don't think I really need a 7700X for what I'm going to use the PC for...

Then again, if I had to spend $200 more on the build, it might make more sense to upgrade the 7600 XT to a 7800 XT...

So, can I get away with using a Phantom Spirit with the 7950X3D? Seeing mixed things online and I don't want to end up thermally throttled.

>friend wants a "fanless" pc
>he buys a fishtank case encased in glass

Uhh... I don't think he'll appreciate the comments about wattage and shit, but whats the max he can get out of a pc this way?

Make sure it's actually sold and shipped from Amazon or XFX directly. Lots of scams on Amazon & Newegg where they list hot items for hundreds less like Ryzen CPUs and XTXs.

You can get away with a wraith prism. Just set proper bios limits.

Can you quadruple your budget for an OLED? If not, then this is an excellent purchase.
It's probably the best non-professional IPS monitor I've ever seen.

>Why don't you get x870 pro rs?
don't care much about the USB3 ports but Pro RS really has limited amounts of them (pic rel) and even a bugged one apparently? Steel Legend looks a lot better for only $20 more
Nova is comfier than all but significantly more pricy and out of stock

I'm kind of a cheapskate, yeah.

Nice! An up and coming company trying to make a splash with it's prices!

You say that until you have a device that only works properly in usb 2.0. It does happen.

god i wish i had space for 3 monitiors in the room im renting

maybe i should have saved the money towards a downpayment instead of putting it into a 7900xtx
>>
>>103290927
amazon canada just had sale for equivalent US$560 and US$820 respectively for 7900xt and 7900xtx

those prices would be amazing, prob a pricing error at that poiint just like what happened before for hte 7900xtx

7900xtx sold out within the day, and 7900xt sold out after a few days
