You can also use Office.com if your needs are very minimal

-ISO: 4.8GB

W10/W11 Home/Pro/Edu/Enterprise/EnterpriseIoT
-Avoid
-Only 1.5-2 yrs support

Cooking? It's mostly an SoL manga about a dagashi shop in the Japanese coastal boonies and the candy company owner that comes to buy it out, but it's mostly just about Japanese candy nostalgia with some slight ecchi stuff.

If i'm trying to see if W10 will work on some laptops I bought that may not have the drivers for it, is there any disadvantage to me putting in a second m.2 SSD and installing W10 on that, without fucking with the drive/W11 install it comes with, just to make returning the laptops easier if I have to?

Like, any special considerations I need to worry about, other then obviously changing the boot drive?

Why is win11 accessing my storage HDD when i open windows settings or do anything with file explorer, even unrelated to the hard drive? If it has win11 on it then it has win10 support.
If you so worried, why?
1. bought something with win11
2. need win10 instead of win11
3 can't you install win11 back again
4. could try installing win10 to external SSD/UDB flash drive
5. could make a recovery image nuke the drive and restore it later on

I've been encountering a decent bit of issues after migrating from ltsc 2021 to ltsc 2024, is there any known fix for some of these? I don't have any plans to move back to ltsc 2021 as I've been using this ltsc 2024 install for probably about half a year now and I don't feel like moving everything over again.
- Audio completely cuts out 20% of the time after sleeping in windows, it's only restorable by restarting the Windows Audio service.
- Windows explorer shits the bed and gets super slow when having a removable veracrypt volume mounted & in use (This was an issue on ltsc 2021 but to a way lesser extent)
- Clicks occasionally don't render for the taskbar and I need to restart dwm & explorer.exe

You know you're not going to get a truly serious answer to this when the thread has 11-antis constantly swimming around in it.
Really I guess it comes down to things you use not working on 21H2 anymore which isn't many things but they're still out there, which you can then move to LTSC 2024 and have 24H2 as your pack so everything will work fine.

Do I need IoT LTSC? I'm not a techie guy but I hate bullshit stuff. I use Windows 11 Pro but I don't even know if I needed Pro instead of Home version. I installed Pro version because it's basically superiour version to Home but I don't use features in Pro besides creating local account in setup? I don't care about privacy too much so yeah. You don't *need* IoT LTSC (especially now that the MAS team figured out free ESU updates) but you should at least use the Enterprise version of 11 instead of Pro as it gives you more features and control.

They're mostly backend features that you won't run in to, but the control mainly comes from certain registry keys being obeyed like disabling telemetry, unlike on Pro/Home.
You can use easy tools like ShutUp10 to enable swathes of registry keys and disable certain services so your OS is at a comfortable amount of privacy without shit constantly running in the background.

i know you aren't a linux guy, but damn, that's some bad advice
if you had issues accessing something on it, you're supposed to override the owner via mount options, not chown, because the former doesn't change permissions on the volume itself
as for solutions, changing permissions doesn't delete anything, of course, but you're probably going to want to reinstall, because you aren't getting the correct permissions back
>>103451553
this is more of a lack of knowledge than an issue with linux. if you blanket change permissions on a windows volume from another windows install you're also going to break it. it's about what he did not where he did it
>>
>>103453201

>>

well you could go through and compare it to a fresh install to manually fix things until it works, but reinstalling and copying things back would be easier in my opinion at least

>>103453388
Yeah.

For what it's worth, this was all on a VM I set up specifically for a partially related experiment. Though the experiment has concluded, I wanted to see if I could somehow fix it "properly" should I somehow come across something like it in the real world

Searching around and cannot see a clear-cut answer. Need to use a windows installation for work. Plan is to install W10E IoT LTSC 2021. Then load it with a few programs (AI models and game engines) that I can connect to via browser; remote in only if I need to.
My gut is telling me that this set up is fine, just set up the apps, and open the firewall a bit to allow access over the apps I need + admin (PowerShell, RDP). But I need to ask, should I be looking to Windows Server OS? I'm not seeing any need to use any windows server roles or services.
>>
>>103453430
well, it's possible to fix, it's just tedious
if i were to seriously want to work out a way to fix this kind of thing reliably, i suppose what i would do is set up a separate fresh installation, and make a script to dump everything's permissions/ACLs, then try to generalise it (like if everything in a folder has the same permissions, then just record the permissions for the folder alone)
with such a record you could then later automatically apply said permissions to a new folder structure, replacing the broken ones. note that you won't be able to simply copy/paste them as-is, you'd probably also need to query the registry on the new system in order to find out what IDs are being used there, since they're randomised. like on linux the first user by defacto standard is nearly always "1000", but i'm pretty sure on windows it's random each time, so just copy-pasting permissions from one user to another, even if it's the first user on both installs with the same name, won't work

only thing that would change based on what you've described is that you can login with multiple rdp sessions at a time on windows server, which is restricted in consumer editions, but it doesn't sound like you need that, either

Alright bros what do here. I built a rig last year with some budget items. Here is the build that matters:

Ryzen 5 7600x
Asus Prime B650 Plus
G.Skill Flare X 6000
Corsair RMx RM850x Gold Plus

So, for a reason unknown, this PC will kernel power failure in low power states such as idling at login or torrenting. It has only been worked around by disabling C States which isn't ideal.

Used to be the chip could handle a -30 PBO offset, but now it can only handle -20 on most cores but core 2 can only handle -15. Not sure the chip is at fault here because the major change is that I've update BIOS a few times since then. Could be tho. Had a 3080ti in it but swapped a 2080ti right now bc reasons, but something to note i guess that has changed since stable.

Everything online is like 'its the psu', but how likely is that really with it's rating and being a year old? Alternatives are the typical: memory, cpu, mobo. Memtested the memory several times and im pretty confident thats not it. Most posts i see on this are 650 boards. Could it be the shitty VRMs? Anyone had this issue ? Should I try to pursue RMAs...but like on everything since I have no idea which one?

You can get the HEIF extension through winget

The HEVC codec is pay-to-use, but the massgrave index has a download to an image file you can mount to install it for free in the unsupported products section.

I'd use Scoop/Winget instead of Chocolaty, and 11 has its own built-in sudo now.
Besides those, seems pretty solid. It's fairly easy to make Windows mostly feel like Linux these days, mostly thanks to WSL2 and Powershell.
>>
>>103455924
saw that windows 11 has it's own sudo but not 10. the laptop i have for windows has an i5-6300u which is apparently not supported by 11. it will still install but i'm not sure if i want to make the leap. mainly since i assume the cpu is considered incompatible for performance reasons since i have tpm2 and all that and i want a snappy computer.
scoop i skipped over because i don't like the way it installs everything on a user level. noticing while i play around with chocolatey in a vm that it installs itself to C:/ProgramData which i really don't like either. so i think i'll just use winget.
>>
>>103455993
You could just use IoT LTSC 2024 as your OS which is 11 Enterprise with very relaxed requirements (basically can run on anything that has a 64-bit CPU that supports SSE4.2 and POPCNT) plus a long support life of up until 2035.
>>
>>103456019
still doesn't officially support skylake processors:
https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/iot/iot-enterprise/hardware/supported/win11_ltsc_2024_intel_processors
i'm probably being too careful though, i just don't want driver issues.
>>
>>103456066
Well you could then just use 10 Enterprise and stick with that. The MAS team figured out how to make ESU updates free so the late 2025 EoL date doesn't really matter anymore.
>>
>>103456101
am i mistaken i thought windows 10 iot ltsc had support until like 2032?

It does but now that the ESU code has been cracked you don't *need* to use it anymore if you want a longer life for your GAC 10 install.

>>

Really it's just a case of picking and choosing. Use IoT LTSC 2021, use GAC 10 Enterprise with the cracked ESU updates. Either will do what you want.

What's the deal with AMD PRO Edition drivers for consumer GPUs? For example, I have a RX 590 and want to install a Pro driver, the latest available on a download page being 22.Q4. Then, reading a changelog for 23.Q1 I've stumbled upon this:
>AMD Software: PRO Edition 23.Q1 does not provide for consumer AMD Radeon Products (such as Radeon RX**** cards). As-is support will be enabled in a subsequent release.
and not a word since. But in every other subsequent release notes, including those for the latest 24.Q4 https://drivers.amd.com/relnotes/amd_radeon_pro_software_24.q4_full_set.pdf there is picrelated, stating limited support for a variety of Radeon cards, even though on RX 400/500/Vega/VII/5000/6000 series driver download pages it's still 22.Q4, and there is no option whatsoever to download Pro drivers for RX 7000 series, even though release notes explicitly state that "AMD Radeonâ„¢ RX 7000 Series" is supported. There is also this reply https://community.amd.com/t5/pc-drivers-software/is-amd-radeon-pro-edition-compatible-with-rx-590-or-not/m-p/559924 from AMD:
>The only reason stated that it seems to not have been added is because it isn't verified or tested for Enterprise Quality plus it is limited in its use.
So, would the latest edition of AMD Pro software work with a Polaris GPU (even though it's provided "as is" and not being "tested for Enterprise Quality") or not? Because I'm getting a lot of mixed signals from AMD here.

You're incorrect. Vega and Polaris are still supported by the official gaming driver, but driver updates for those cards aren't as frequent as for RDNA ones.
https://www.techpowerup.com/315547/amd-puts-radeon-vega-and-polaris-gpus-on-a-slower-driver-update-track

What isn't supported anymore is GCN 3.0 and earlier cards, AMD pulled the plug on those in summer of 2022, with Adrenalin 22.6.1 being the last available version for those GPUs.

The reason I used SDI is because it was portable and didn't seem to leave any bloatware.

Windows seem to be good at updating drivers, reddit says that SDI got handed over to someone who put malware in it, they claim Origin is the version you should use but then some people claim Origin also is dangerous.

>>103463548

I see mixed things about Origin, at the end of the day I don't care about what version I use as long as it doesn't have malware.

Use windows update first, and then use Origin. WU usually use generic or outdated drivers. Getting drivers directly from the manufacturers is the best because you can guarantee its safety. For me I just trust whatever Origin gets me and it's more convenient as well.

>>
>>103467096
More safe? Yes. Having a fTPM (a tpm inside the same cpu die) make the cpu do the encrypt/decrypt operations without they key never being on ram. Normal tpm keys can be somewhat extracted sniffing the serial bus to the cpu having the hardware at hand.
Bitlocker and LUKS if you're a linux fag leverages the tpm to not expose the key on ram.
>>
>>103467077
If you use nomacs and mpv/mpc-hc for your image/videos respectively you shouldn't need the codecs to run anything.
You could install the VP9 extensions from the MS Store through winget so webms can have thumbnails if you want that.
>>
>>103467098
Download disk2vhd in your VM and turn the VM's install into a VHD(X) file. Then move that VHD(X) file to your local install and use Rufus to flash the image file to something like a SATA SSD in a USB enclosure. Then after it's flashed you should be able to plug it in internally and make it the primary boot drive, with everything basically being there (with Windows Update installing whatever new drivers are needed.)

It provides absolutely zero security increase over just running an administrator account with UAC controls set to strict.

that is true (and im not the original asker) but imo it's nice to set up a user account for normies to touch your computer if they have to. you never know when you might be inspired to bring your rig to a gayming event or something silly like that and it's just nice to already have set up.

but in that case, when you run something that needs to be elevated and you're on the non-admin account, it just prompts you for the credentials. but it's not a common use case if you know what you're doing. even on an admin account, yeah, just set UAC to strict and it'll prompt you every time.

SDIO push bad drivers as well.
After getting the last update, I got some "optional drivers" in windows update.
So I used SDIO to install those, and it made the trackpad stop.
Had to install the drivers from the manufacture.

What's the limitation of this?
>>
>>103468935
just ignore it
it literally affects nothing
it's just a warning that you aren't running the latest updooter goyslop edition of windows
>>
>>103469420
too late im on 11 now. is start11 a good install?
>>
>>103469327
You can change editions only to editions that have an official upgrade pathway. So you can't change a GAC edition to Enterprise LTSC natively for instance.
>>
whyd you niggas make me switch, the fucking right click menu is visibly slower than win10's. fuck youuuuuuuuuuuuu

try steamcmd, it might still work
>>
>>103469627
You can easily look up how to disable the 11 context menu. Or just type this into an admin command prompt and restart explorer.exe
>reg add "HKCU\Software\Classes\CLSID\{86ca1aa0-34aa-4e8b-a509-50c905bae2a2}\InprocServer32" /f /ve

What differences can I expect from Windows 10 vs Windows 11 ltsc IoT? Does windows 11 have more of that weird windows 11 telemetry spyware or is it not included? Does it get re-enabled with every windows update?
>>
>>103470333
They're basically the same but 2021 has a 10 21H2 backend and 2024 has an 11 24H2 backend. The same programs/tweaks disable the same telemetries, there's nothing more added.
Though I guess Recall is just sitting there, which you can disable if it is enabled using DISM's feature disabler.

wsl users what distro(s) did you go with?

In case you change your mind and want to install it again.
You already changed your mind when you installed then deleted it.

No one except the Shi11 and the 11igger are actually in these threads telling people to install windows 11.
Literally every person here with an IQ above room temp has been telling you repeatedly to install Win10 IoT LTSC 2021.
The fact that you ignored it and installed windows 11 anyways suggests you were always destined for win11 slop.

>Microsoft hasn't treated UAC as a security boundary for a decade or more now
?Care to elaborate on this? As far as I know that's exactly the purpose of UAC and it always has been. In fact, they are still actively working on it in the newest versions of Windows 11.

not sure if right thread
I dualboot windows 10 and linux and I identified 2 problems which I think are related.
>I setup my windows 10 network to remember to wifi credentials but don't join the network on startup
>when I log off from windows and switch back to linux I can't access any network and need to restart the computer
I assume windows doesn't really "turn off".
Is there a way to fix it?
