I just got a new monitor, Acer IPS like my old ones, and the colors for it seem really off. The entire monitor visibly lacks vibrancy and brightness compared to my old one - windows explorer side by side has the white background looking almost greenish and the purple background on the Marvel Rivals main menu looks almost blue on the new one. I'm at the factory default brightness and contrast settings, the only thing I changed was the color mode from Warm to User (50 across all colors) because Warm looks like shit.

Should I give it a few weeks and hope the colors/brightness settle? I mean my old monitor I have at 65 brightness and it looks MUCH brighter than the new one at 80.

I don't think 16 GB system RAM is a big deal. I had 32 GB (added another 2x 8 GB kit of the same RAM as my original kit), and it only caused problems. I'm back on 16 GB now, and there's nothing I can't do or even where the 32 GB would be better. It was just a 'why not' upgrade, not a practical one. Not saying you can't ditch AM4 but I don't think your RAM should be why you do it

Honestly that combo is nothing special. You're only saving 20-30 bucks over buying separates with a comparable board. For example https://pcpartpicker.com/list/7RVkRK at $330.
Also, with $400 for the board+CPU you could easily go AM5 and get the benefits of platform longevity and DDR5. Buying a new 5700X3D system in 2024 only really makes sense if you're doing the Aliexpress thing. That, or you play a load of games that get huge gains from 3D cache.

Give me the rundown on SSD lifespan. If I'm going to use a 4TB SSD as long term storage (looking at Crucial P3 and WD SN5000 atm) with no heavy reading or writing duties, can I expect it to last a long time without randomly dying or is a HDD still better in that regard?

It's okay. Weird that they put 6400MT/s RAM in an AMD bundle but not the end of the world (you can downclock).
I suppose my main issue is that it's not really any better (for gaming) than a 7600/X build. The meta for AM5 value is buying the $200 6-core and upgrading to the EoL X3D in a few years. Paying extra for a 7700/X is pointless if you're just gaming.

>you guys think amd will do binned 7700/9700x3d's? or de we have to wait until am5 eol?
I was going to say they'd wait for AM5 EOL because of how bad ARL-S is, but between pressure from Bartlett Lake if/when Intel launches it and the fact that non-X3D chips are selling like shit and it's only really the 9800X3D which can't be kept in stock. If if they release cheaper non-X Zen 5 chips at CES at best they'll match price/perf parity with the 7000 series and likely cost more meaning they'll sell poorly too (especially if they don't include a box cooler like the older chips do) so they may release lower-tier X3D ships sooner than they would have otherwise wanted. If only because they've pledged to ramp production on the 9800X3D to replenish stocks for Q1 meaning they've likely already been accumulating excess cast-off bins that ready to sold as 9700X3Ds or lower chips and they don't really want to pay inventory storage to just sit on them.

hey frens

about a mont ago I got new monitor - a 27 inch ips mini-led
was liking it so far (nver thought 1440p could be such a considerable upgrade over 1080p), last thursday tragedy struck and the monitor seemingly "died"
just like that, from one moment to the other
I wasn't even gaming or watching videos, it was like 7pm, I was studying since 2pm as I have for the last week (using the "low blue light" mode to not get my eyesight tired so quickly) and then the screen just went pitch black (I can still make out only the super white windows if I squint really hard...)
nothing I tired "brought it back" - no amount of clicking on it's analogue buttons, the power cord seemed fine too, I even tried switching plugs and output (was using DisplayPort with the desktop, tried HDMI and then I even tried connecting my laptop)
also everytime I press the "power on" button, I hear for like 20 seconds his eletric buzzing sound coming from inside the monitor...
perhaps something fried in there?
I think it's important to note these last 2 weeks my desktop has been "dying" (blue screens, shutdowns after being stuck on some tab for too long, can't acesss the OS disk when I boot it up - so alot of times I have to shut it down throught the power button or even the socket)
but the wierdest thing is that yesterday the monitor worked! for about 2 hours... then it died... again...
and it's working now has as well, but I fear it will just be a repeat of yesterday...
I am thinking of "sending" it to the warranty on boxing day (hope it also magically work just long enough for them to think there's nothing wrong with it...), but even if I should get a new one or this one repaired, I would like to know what I could do to prevent it

so anyone here ever such a bizarre issue as this?
thx for reading my blog post in advance

Sounds like either a bad power supply or controller board. If you still have an open return window at the e-tailer you purchased it from through the holiday season I'd RMA it there first as that's typically a more painless process than going through a warranty claim with the manufacturer, but if you need to warranty it that's still worth doing.

Depends on your needs and the power characteristics of your 14700K.
My undervolted 14700K with a 125W long duration power limit can exceed a stock 7900X's multicore performance, about 212 points per watt (less than 140W 10min average due to 56s 253W PL2 turbo).
The higher multithreaded score in the pic is the undervolted chip running at stock power & boost settings (253W PL1 & PL2).

miniLED is still basically experimental technology it's why they charge a fortune for it and sill shill OLED over it so heavily. Whatever unit you get is just a lottery but your dying PC wouldn't have helped things.

I've had monitors "die" over time and it's always the power board, usually the capacitors on them. It's a very easy fix if that is the issue. These were quite old monitors though not brand new ones.

Some games bottleneck the CPU.
I'd get the 5090 if you're 4K gaming though.
Your CPU & memory will need a complete upgrade if you go that path because the 3200MT/s memory will bottleneck a 14700K in gaming.

I got a pic related and a ryzen 7 5700X3D to go along with it, but i heard that the board might need a bios update to make it work
In case it doesn't, should i update it to the latest version anyway or do i run the risk of bricking it?
If somehow it ends up bricked, is there anything i can do to fix it or should i buy a new mobo?
>>
>>103603719
>miniLED is still basically experimental technology it's why they charge a fortune for it and sill shill OLED over it so heavily.
really?
I got a miniLED because it is considerably cheaper than a decent 1440p OLED and the understanding I had was that unlike the latter the former wouldn't just burn up and die after 6 months...
Especially considering it's an IPS panel, my former 1080p LED monitor was IPS and it lasted me 7 years (still in working condition, bought the new one because I wanted to try out 1440p and I will get a new desktop next month)

>Whatever unit you get is just a lottery
Any chances of getting one that can last like the last one?

So is an UPS a good choice to protect them?

If you have a 14700K/F and DDR5 memory modules, I suggest buying a Z790 board for the improved memory traces.
ASRock Z790 Lightning WiFi would be my budget choice, 8-layer board and it should be able to run 6800MT/s.

It's not a bad idea if you're open to using DLSS or XeSS in more demanding games, FSR needs to catch up a bit.
The internal resolution of DLSS quality @ 1440p is less than 1080p (950ish).
The monitor market is very competitive and you can pick up a nice 1440p gaming monitor at a reasonable price, especially during discount periods.
A G2427D @ $150 or an M27QA is pretty much all most PC gamers need until they decide to build a 4K/OLED gaming PC.

The video card market is still pretty shitty, but things should get better next-gen.
At least from Radeon, they can't make anything more mediocre than the RX 7600 or people won't take them seriously.

Looking for a used card to upgrade my father's old though reliable AMD RX 480. Primary usage that's demanding will be occasional gaming; he plays casual games and older titles like WoW, but I wanted him to be able to play the new Indiana Jones game if it was of interest to him, and perhaps that Star Wars flight sim from a couple years back; the new Indy is obviously the most demanding.

I was seeing some mid range cards sell in the $200-400s so I was thinking of the following, provided I could find good prices for a used one
>AMD 7700XT, 7800XT
These seem like the ideal if one can be found for a good price
>7600XT, 7600
Not sure if these are worthwhile especially the plan 7600 but maybe the price/perf is worth it?
>6600XT, 6700XT , 6750XT, 6800XT etc..
If the price is right it seems these could be worth it?

>NV 4060 or 4070 line, including S or Ti
There seems to be varying levels of VRAM for the 4060 some are 8GB some are 12GB? Not sure if any of these NV cards are worth it or not but keeping an eye open if there's a good deal; NV prices seem to stay higher but there are also more of them so who knows.

Aside from plebbit and a couple of old school forums that have FS/FT sections, not sure where else is really worth looking for reliable sales that don't have shitfuck pricing.

How stupid is it to buy a PSU for an upgrade in 4 years? 10-year warranty on it at least. Just interested since I did bought a white PC case for cheap before shipping/tariffs get wildly expensive, I remember a lot of overseas-brand for heavier PC cases being hit much hard due increased shipping cost a couple years ago. I also see a white PSU that is relatively cheap for being top-tier on the PSU autist list, plus no additional cost for being white compared to black top-tier alternatives

Reasoning is I have a 600-w PSU right now so I know I will need a stronger PSU if I want to go into high-refresk 4K gaming later on, just not in a rush to upgrade since a 6750XT is good enough for my display, no rush to head into OLED territory yet until there are 4K 27" options at least (since 32" is the point where it's not feasible to do 2 monitors anymore in my current setup)

yeah I'm interested in the Seasonic GX-1000, apparently top tier and only CAD$190 (US$140) for 1000w PSU so i'm good if I ever want to upgrade early into a 5080/5090 next year, it's tempting depending on how $$$ flows next year since I'd also need to upgrade my monitor of course
Also OK just waiting for a decent GPU to go on sale, just skipped on a white XFX merc 7900XT that went on sale for CAD$750, couldn't justify it coming from a 6750XT, I need a more substantial upgrade

I'll prob hold off for now until I have plans to actually get a GPU I guess, no idea what I'll get yet since I'm basically just waiting for a decent white GPU for 4K gaming to go on sale while I use my 6750XT with my cheap monitor

It's like $15 more than a phantom spirit air cooler
If you have the space for it at the top, why not? You can run the fans quiet if it's not a demanding CPU, much better than spending MORE just for a silent noctua fan alone

Also no slight CPU cooler sag to worry about
>>
>>103606022
>For only $15 dollars more you get an unserviceable POS that will fail within 5 years
Stop trying to take meme shortcuts . Either get a hardcore full liquid system or a reliable , simple and well designed air setup
>>
>>103606047
Aio is way better than air and requires no maintenance unlike custom loops
>>
>>103606047
It has a 3-year warranty and it's half (or cheaper) the price of other brands
I would never pay $100+ for an AIO or liquid cooling but I'll probably consider a $50 AIO for my next build just because it's so cheap
Fans will eventually fail on a double tower cooler too and if you're into noctua and other overpriced fans meme then that's basically a $50 replacement for 2 fans

If i'm stupid enough to get a 9950X3D next year I am heavily considering it for a new build

I looked at the manual and it seems to come with a proper 12 pin that connects into the PSU, not an adapater.
Not being ATX doesn't matter too much, it is a new standard but there's still nothing stopping a PSU having the 12 pin if they think the PSU can still support a 600w cable (or limit it to 450w)

Well I bit the bullet and uninstalled the third fan. Everything booted fine and I'm creating a Windows USB stick right now, but only being able to use 2 out of 3 fans is really irking me. Easiest thing to do would probably be buy a slim fan and hope it gives enough clearance, but then it will be different from the other two. I really don't want to fuck around with the CPU cables because I feel like that's just asking for something bad to happen. Probably need to get some sort of extension / 90 degree converter so I can run the cables through the back and not have to worry about the AIO bending the shit out of them and potentially the PCB as well.

So I built a new PC for a family member on an old atx case but it gives me a light shock whenever I touch the IO shield or the metal part of the back. I thought it was the power supply so I used an old one too to test it out and the results were the same. I am thinking now it's the case since it doesn't have traditional standoffs but rather these elevated bridge ones (circled in red). And the motherboard is micro atx so I can't put all of them with standoffs just 6 max. There are holes to put the microatx (blue) but they don't have standoffs and that would be worse wouldn't it? It's probably not grounding itself correctly or something like that. The case is the culprit isn't it?

ATX 3.0 is actually more stringent than ATX 3.1.
If a PSU is 3.0 it's already 3.1 because the standard was higher on 3.0.
If they both have the same PSU side connection for the 12 pin then the 3.0 is 'better' marginally because of the lower 3.1 standard.

I've been waiting for RTX 5090 since the start of the year. But now I'm thinking to wait for AMD's top GPU... which, I assume, gonna be RX 8900 XTX or something like that? Probably released in summer.

AMD has all but committed to ceding the high end next gen. Their top tier card is likely to be the 8800XT with, at best, 4080 class performance. If you're planning to drop $5k on a PC next year it'll have to be Nvidia.

>I'm not sure if I should wait till next for a 5080 or just get something this christmas sale
Up to you. Next gen is looking damned expensive but $3k should be enough.

>the cpu fan and psu on the list are one's still in my old pc; they should still be usable.
You maybe want to rethink this.
The cooler should be just about enough for a 265K but will get pretty loud under all-core work. Saving $40 on a $3000 build looks dumb to me.
The PSU should be fine but you'll want to wait for benchmarks on the 5080.

Look for a recycling centre or tech club. See if they have an old card they want rid of. Mine used to get batches of old Quadros when the university upgraded their servers. No good for (modern) gaming but it'll get you a display output to tide you over. Failing that, grab an Ebay GT710 or similar.

Here's some example builds at ~$3k with monitor.
AMD: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/Hfthkf
Here the idea is that you'll upgrade the CPU to the EoL Zen6 X3D chip when necessary. Versus Intel, you trade some multicore perf. in the interim but get a faster PC in the end.
Intel: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/wR6wcx
This one is better if you insist on not upgrading anything.
Note the warning about wattage - this is why you'll want to wait for benchmarks on the 5080.
Consider also a 14700K, since performance is almost identical, but be aware you'll almost certainly need a new PSU.

Please note that in both cases the $1500 card is just a placeholder to set a ceiling price. It's likely the 5080 will be closer to $1200.
The monitor is also somewhat of a placeholder to give you an idea of what you should be targeting. Monitors aren't "my thing" so I can't endorse this specific model.

>I'll look into the difference between the 14700k and 265k.
Yes always a good idea to look for application-specific benchmarks. By and large they're very close; the 265K has a slight edge in some productivity software and a slight regression in gaming. Not really worth caring about either way. The big one is the power consumption - the 14700K pulls almost twice as much /but/ it's often significantly cheaper. Got to weight that up. FWIW, if you're dead-set on Intel, my preference would be the 265K.

>Hopefully OLED burn in won't be an issue
They all burn in but you should keep your old monitor around for work/web stuff to minimize it. If that's not feasible then consider a MiniLED or even just a regular 4k/144/IPS. Or consider it a wear item that'll need replaced every so often.

Yes the Dell will be worth it. You'll be using DLSS Performance at 1440p instead of DLSS Quality at 1080p, but they both start from an input resolution of 720p, so the performance cost is the same, but the 1440p reconstruction will look substantially better

You'll also be able to use VRR / adaptive sync, which is a game changing feature, and you'll have access to a higher refresh rate in general. Definitely worth the upgrade
