Must have been around ~2010 or around that time, it was still possible to mine it profitably with a mid-tier pc at home. It was around the same time Steam began allowing crypto as payment, so I just bought a game off of there when I got to like ~30 bucks and then never cared about it again. Looking back I could've probably become a multi-millionaire by now if I had bought in at that point in time, but I was young and didn't have any disposable income to do it even if I wanted to.

Vocabulary is lacking for new hires in almost all roles. You don't need certifications but you need the education from them to succeed. You can specialize after you get Sec+/CCNA however. But you need the fundamentals of the lower level certs to succeed.

Went through my 4th but separately named harassment training this year. All this is teaching me is how to be a two faced, backstabbing, screw, brown nosing manager with a victim complex.

I wonder if someone higher up got some real banter and couldn't handle it. I also wonder if i will have a few meetings about it which would also be a joke since everyone is chill in my area of the company.
>>
My old boss used to be very hands-on and productive, we used to have a very fast pace in my team and I, specifically, was the fastest on the team (because I worked closer with said boss).
He has been sacked and replaced with a slow, "day in the life of" type of boss. As far as I understand, his only credential is "friends with the higher ups". I haven't written much code in the last few weeks, if any.
Has anyone been through this before? I don't mind having a lazy guy job but I fear that, when management looks at metrics, this slow boss will use me as a scapegoat and get me fired.
I'm quite split between enjoying lazyness or trying to get team productivity up, if anyone has some advice I'd appreciate it.

>if you have to ask for a promotion, you're better off just hopping to a new job
Is there truth to this statement???
>>
>>106455720
There has to be a job opening then you throw your name in the company hat. If it's really bad then they will look outwards to someone who tangentially knows your sections technology, but has been a manager longer than internal hires.

If you have no openings then yeah consider job hopping within the company to another position or to another company.
>>
>>106455720
Probably not. Many jobs have people who are just too busy or who get into narrow frames of thought and will just hire other people instead of promote when they would have promoted you if they thought about it.
>>
>>106455743
>There has to be a job opening then you throw your name in the company hat.

Or rather, proponents of AI are idiots for not considering the consequences of using it. If it speeds up your workflow then that's good for whoever you're working for more than for you. The work is why you're there and that's why you're paid, so if you do it in half the time thanks to AI then you get half the pay. Moreover, your superiors will justify you not being promoted to a manager because you don't need a team under you because you have AI. And finally, when you're sick and tired of not being promoted or getting paid more and decide to switch jobs, then congrats the entire fucking industry is using AI like you just were, so they don't need new hires. But unlike you, they'll be gripping onto employment for dear life because they're not naive.

And that's if AI speeds up your workflow. Imagine the shitshow if it actually sets you back: you end up relying on somebody else's codebase that you had 0 input in, and your programming skills have languished because AI models have done all the heavy lifting, and the cherry on top is that you're behind scheduled being scrutinised by superiors who think you should be well ahead of schedule because AI is the buzzword of the day.

Lmao, fuck that. I'm a great programmer, I won't "enhance" it with AI. I'll go at my own pace, authoring my own code, and sharpening my skillsets the old fashioned way. And if that's not good enough for the market then that's an indication the tech bubble has finally burst. It popped over 20 years ago and pay in this sector has only gotten worse, jobs offshored, and frankly tech in general is shittier (think: Windows, Google). I'm professionally in this for the money, and once I'm financially independent I'm going to seriously consider retiring from IT and tending to a garden or some shit.
>>
>>106456270
And how could I have forgot: while you're busy leveraging AI, the AI companies are leveraging you. Microsoft and the rest of them will one day reach out to your boss and explain they've reviewed all of your work and found that it was more or less Microsoft that did it, and that they can go on doing it at a fraction of your salary. They'll replace you, and your job of being a AI prompter is something a jeet can do all the way from India, if they don't already have AI prompting other AIs. So congrats, the skill set you've dedicated years into becoming a professional at is no longer capable of putting food on your table and paying your bills. Slow clap from the soup lines.
>>
>>106455720
Yes. Asking for promotion or pay raise is a concern to the business, and if they're a shitty business then they use that as a red flag to indicate it maybe time to replace you with someone new.
Having a new job lined up means that when you go in there asking for the promotion or pay raise and they refuse to give it you, then you have the option to quit on the spot.

I have to work with pakistani on updating some website. It's rendered server side, so I work on the backend and the server style syntax and he works on css. And some of the questions and requests I get are incredibly retarded.
Like "the testing server isn't working". The error message points to a specific file. My response, "oh, you deleted this entire file".
Basically he breaks something server side, doesn't try to figure out why it's broken, accuses me of breaking it. I tell exactly what he broke. He fixes it. And this loop happened several times already.
Also his latest request that I thought was retarded included an em dash, so I'm not even talking to a human.

Anyone here that transitioned out of SWE into an cybersecurity or devOps/architecture role?

I've been coasting for the past 5 years in a dead-end IAM Operations position, the only programming I've been able to do on the job is some python scripting and spreadsheet management with Pandas. I like programming but I think I've romanticized working as a developer, and perhaps would find it better to just do it as a hobby and to support any other role that I may have. I am now trying to transition to a different role, I'm thinking about going deeper into Cybersec, aiming to something like a Security Engineer or a DevSecOps role, but I still have this nagging feeling that I had when I was a kid of working as a developer.

Anyone have some perspective on SWE? Do you like it? Do you think it's fulfilling and worth perusing? Are most SWE jobs trying to decipher spaghetti code and/or building the same enterprise applications?

Like, I like programming, I'm reading a book right now on implementing a tree-walking-interpreter and then a VM, I think it's fucking cool to build stuff like that and understand how shit really works under the hood, but I'm assuming most generic SWE jobs don't have you working on cool shit unless you have years of experience and are able to specialize in a niche filed like computer vision or whatever the fuck.

Bumping this question
>>
>>106459937
yes there is truth to it
if you were going to be promoted you would be, if you have to ask you're more valuable staying where you are at the price they're paying
MBAs teach that additional compensation is not the way, instead you should be given growth opps with clear paths to advance and if you don't have that then gg
>>
>>106455720
>>106459937
If you're already well-compensated and there are reasons as to why you would want to stay at that job, either because the role you're currently performing is a good stepping-stone in your career, or you just plainly love what the fuck you're doing, schedule, work-life balance, etc, then you might consider asking for a raise. But in general, for whatever fucking reason, the budget companies have for new hires dwarfs what they have for salary increases. Even if you get promoted to a higher-level role, you will almost never get a salary increase to match the current market-rate. Also, depending on where you are and the amount of bureaucratic red-tape fuckery involved, you might be waiting a fucking year or more for your raise after you've asked for it. If your primary goal is to earn more, switching jobs is the better option.

500k a year so likely doctors which means college debt is between 300-600k but that includes medical school, dorms, rent, other expenses rolled in.
>>
>>106460031
>instead you should be given growth opps
Ok assuming I'm on a growth path (I would presume) because I'm taking more responsibilities, and doing more high level stuff - will I get promoted soon or do I still have to ask for it?
>>
>>106460213
of course you have to ask for it anon, ideally you should tell your boss to eat dicks and not take on additional work if you don't get promoted _first_.
They will try to nickel and dime you for as long as possible and extract every possible drop of unpaid work they can.
>>
>>106459720
In most SWE jobs, especially if you have tons of experience, you don't get to write cool code to do cool shit. You're probably placed in a glorified "architect" role where all you do is attend meetings to decipher whatever the fuck management and business people want and then tell other code monkeys what to implement.
>I like programming but I think I've romanticized working as a developer
I think we all did anon, we probably grew up with the idea of the underground hacker doing magic in a cool tech cave filled to the brim with gadgets - granted, you can do cool shit to aim for a feeling similar to that, but it will most definitely not be in a corpo environment. Another anon gave me a similar suggestion some time ago, but realistically the best you can do is not care about your job, do just enough to not get fired, and use the money you have to do cool shit that you like.

Bangai-O Spirits does this too. When you make a custom level you transmit it by using the DS's speakers, and the import function uses the DS's mic. It's completely audible and sounds mostly like grinding gears, and has good enough error handling that the most common way to transmit levels is people recording their DS speakers like fucking animals, emailing the audio file, then playing it back off your PC's speakers like a cretin because the DS used a proprietary mic jack and they never released a line in device.

So even if you want to meme out about "reee modems turn it into electricals its not audio!!!" theres examples of direct transmission of bits and bytes via mechanical wave audio already out there (and they are usually really slow and it's kinda annoying for obvious reasons of having to listen to BRRREHGGGGRRRR CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK WHRRRGRRRERRRRRRR to get anything done)

>How long before they realize outsourcing to Mumbai with a copilot subscription isn't an infinite money hack?
it will probably take decades for these big tech companies to see any serious decline. they have tons of exclusive contracts, a lot of which are with government. and most of their money is probably made on a few legacy products and services that is easy to maintain.

they arent even outsourcing either, 40% of software engineering jobs in the US are held by immigrants. that was in 2019, its probably much higher now.
https://www.americanimmigrationcouncil.org/research/foreign-born-stem-workers-united-states#:~:text=In%202019%2C%20there%20were%20647%2C000,and%20math%20category%20in%202019

kicking the can down the road is standard US policy for any ticking timebomb issue. so nothing will change.
think about how stupid the shit is now: software continuously gets worse, theres massive security issues and data breaches every couiple of months, hospitals are constantly getting hacked and leaking peoples records, airplanes fall out of the sky, firearms go off randomly in holsters. none of it makes a difference companies are always going to cut as many corners and make it a race to the bottom.

just kidding we just need up the h1b so that 80% of all software engineers are 85 iq indians. when we do that we will finally have a hard working, talented work force handling infrastructure.

Well fitting button down shirts, polo's and nice chino pants. It gives a preppy/posh look but so long as it's not tight fitting anyone can look good in it.

More casual you wear plain polo's and jeans.

In addition if you want to be cheap with clothing but wasn't some higher quality clothing then consider buying Uniqlo. Pretty nice colors, solid polo's, not enough variety for button downs however but generally 30$ is considered mid range for mens clothing. There T-shirts are great but if you want more fitness related clothing then consider Soffee, some of it is made in america, look for ringspun cotton shirts that they have and i promise you will never see a wrinkle on them ever.

Wear shirts with graphics or words on them looks bad.

standard IT bro costume is a polo and chinos or jeans, maybe a hawaiian shirt if you're feeling saucy. outerwear vests came back too so a puffy ski jacket type or maybe a fleece vest if you need extra pockets

if you're a techbro then it's full business suit all the time for maximum MBA larp

if you're fat either way just buy fitting clothes, you cant fix being fat with fashion you just have to admit you are a big boi and work around it

Its a weed out like most degrees are for jobs. If you can't get a 3.6 GPA or higher in a pre-med/biology bachelors degree program then your chances of covering & passing the same topics again in the MCAT with more depth is extremely low. More than 80% of the students in college do not elect to do the MCAT or if they do pass do not go to med school.

At that point you have to define what retirement means to you. FIRE is financial independent retire early. >>
>>106465262
I find the whole American payday system completely nuts. It seems like they have zero money management abilities. Unless your job isn't paying a living wage, you should be able to get paid on a monthly cycle and not have issues. And yet it seems that they're all paid every two weeks and can't even deal with that.

I've heard that construction workers here get paid on a two-week cycle too since they're also shit with money. Pretty much everyone else gets paid monthly.
>>
>>106465142
>That is not the reality when you account for cost of living
Literally wrong, you just want le ebin big city life or le ebin gated community life
>>
>>106465284
Woah woah woay, nobody said anything about loans. This is earned wage access, so you're not borrowing money for an interest rate. Instead, you're tapping into your future income and paying a small fee for doing so. Nobody's loaning or borrowing, so you don't have to worry about crazy things like "APR", which isn't even a real word.
>>
>>106465262
I promise you it's not most americans. I can see a large percentage like 5% but its gotta be bullshit metrics they use to make it seem like most. Credit cards, heloc's and 401k loans are far more common. Even so that is skewed since alot of people like myself pay off their credit cards the next day or the full balance before interest rate hits, so we can get cash back incentives.

Average american either has a house debt or multiple car loan debts. Some of these car loans are even 0% for 24 months.

I dunno if it's a westoid thing or a global thing, but I see this in Canada now. Everybody, regardless of age, from literal boomer to 19 year old zoomer, is suddenly bitching and moaning about pay periods longer than a week. I've heard of people outright refusing very high paying jobs in tradie stuff because they don't pay literally daily. Even at my new job, the HR people got all sheepish about telling me that it's two-week pay periods where I get paid for the week before those two but not the current one, as if that hadn't been utterly standard for like a hundred years.

What in the protestant FUCK is happening with normies' finances? Even if you're up to your eyeballs in debt, debt is usually called in monthly. If it's the same amount of money in the end, why do you NEEEEEEED a little of it every day instead of a lump sum after two weeks? A month I can see getting annoying if it's out of phase with the payments you have to make but how is bi-weekly not quick enough for normies?

I don't see what the issue is. My mortgage is monthly, my credit card is monthly, my utilities are monthly (except electricity is every two months now, I believe). What payments are you even having out of phase?

You should be able to handle a monthly salary payment if you have even a modicum of financial planning ability.

You can do short term helocs as high as 100k on the equity of your house. Its somewhat good since the interest rates are lower but better than a refinance since you are not resetting your household loan equity/interest rates for that extra cash. I would still recommend not going into more debt but alot of people pay for their kids college degrees that way. Or if they just pay off the house they can pay out of pocket for their kids college anyways.

I meant something like if all your payments are due on the 1st, but you get paid "The First Monday Of Each Month" and Monday is on the 3rd or some shit.

If you're not a total moron it's not a problem but many amerimutts live paycheck to paycheck and/or are morons. So I could see a situation arising where someone is at "zero" debt but also zero money, but then they get paid on the 3rd with recurring payments due on the 1st and thus have two days of wondering if they're going to get evicted or have their phone cut off or their leased car towed away or something.

honestly my intuition was that constantly putting in money would be good since the new money in can now grow too, as opposed to not growing while in the employer's hands, but I might be wrong and initial larger investments without extra shots of cash may be better for the final value of the account. idk. it's still non-traditional though and as much as I'll make fun of normies who demand to be paid daily I'd rather be able to say "two more weeks" if/when I run out of ready to use cash
