5 years in IT, should I pivot to another career that is more in demand while I still can?
>>106466486Winning at what?
>>106466536LEL IT is still in demand. There is not a job out there that is immune from outsourcing.
How do I get into management? Serious question Here's my stats>26>extremely good grade in economics/CS Frankenstein degree>currently senior dev with a few more responsibilities but nothing you could call real management>autistically good on an engineering level, and been doing senior level dev for almost 4 years now, total job experience is like 6 years >outside of work some really tiny open source projectsThat's about itMy current job is comfy and paying well, but it's not "retire before retirement age tier" and I'm getting the career ladder itch. What do?
>>106466536>should I pivotyou should outsource your core competencies, and near-shore some tangible assets or tertiary processes, or maybe both
>>106466590MBA or bust anon.
>>106466643In my country that degree is more valuable than a pure MBA anon

>>106466722are you this one weird brown guy in the middle>>106466718>It obviously doeshonest to god question, middle management is hell on earth, and these people, usually not IT based, are making money comparable to mid+/-senior positions. Also, a lot of IT guys are making uuuuge money just simply getting a higher position as a dev. There are some salary ranges available only to trusted employees.
>>106466813Define middle management, I've yet to see a company where middle management earns less than basic senior devs unless you're talking about some star devs in meme fields like ML.I DONT mean product owners, that's not management IMO
>>106466854Just to clarify, for me middle management means everything team lead and above, or squad/department lead and below. So basically people responsible for 5-30 people
>>106466900>So basically people responsible for 30+ peopleyeah those are making dosh, I have no idea how to get there or how to help you son. I suppose, get lucky with a small company that will be shooting up the stars, and you are one of the OG squad, basically glorified nepotism.
I don’t even write code anymore. It’s all just prompting and agentic workflows. I don’t give a fuck, I hate programming.
>>106466486Hell yeah brother I'm mentally ill
>>106466972>agenticthis is the dumbest new techbro phrase, possibly ever, it is even worse than "performant" and "compute units" combined

I'm dating an Indian woman who works in big tech. I'm Indian-American (born and raised in USA, American accent, don't smell like burning garbage). I've slowly been piecemealing information to her about how I believe Indians have ruined tech in America and she is actually quite receptive

Any of you other guys worked as IT support but switched to development? How do you find IT Managers treat you?I always get a vibe of resentment off them, like I'm a pariah or maybe more accurately an apostate.Or maybe that's just IT Managers in general, even when I was in IT the average manager usually seemed to be full of themselves and some form of latent psychopath.

Hi Anon!
>>106475738???
>>106475587Should be no gaps. That said, on resumes people usually state start/end months, not down to the exact day. So like>Job 1: Apr 2020 - Sep 2025>Job 2: Sep 2025 - PresentEven if you got laid off today, as long as you get hired in September you can still make it look just fine. Hell I'd even say you can go one more month. If one job ends "Sep" and the next job starts "Oct", that'll still basically look like no gaps.
Is this gap shit just a meme or is it an american thing? there is no way it's this big of a fucking deal. anyone you can always lie.

>>106478769No, they'll know you're gay
>>106478612>"""""""""""lack of rights""""""""""""'You can quit AT ANY TIME. Nobody is forced to take a job they don't want. If you feel that you deserve more for your skills, then you are free to ask for your exact demands until you find someone who agrees with you. It's a free market.I agree with regulations for safety. But everything else is completely fair game for the EMPLOYER to dictate. You don't have to agree, you don't have to take the job, you can ask for more compensation, it's up to you. But the EMPLOYER is the one creating jobs, taking on entrepreneurial risk, and contributing to society, not the employee.Don't like it? Go start a business of your own. Good luck

wfh chads, I'm rotting away my 20's and I have no idea how to get out of this asocial mindspaceI went to japan and was a digital nomad for 1 month and that was even worse - I only spoke to 2 single moms that whole time. One was a 60ish dolt who did that Japanese "eeEEHHH???" to everything and it was embarrassing. She hid her daughter from me too. The other mom was a 34ish hipster who literally never slept and almost got us in a few car accidents. At the end of this trip I lost my voice from not using it.I go to the gym and for walks and make some small talk with the indians I see there. The other white dudes are zoned out in a daze and aren't really approachable - plus I'm like 6 years older than most of themI've been working from home for 3 years now - thanks for being amusing all the time. This is my only form of socializing.

I went to fake-work today and it actually felt really good! I thought I was gonna be all salty about having my time wasted by doing paperwork and responding to month-old emails at a unit that has had no tactical or strategic relevance ever, but seeing people was nice and I made the horrid mistake of signing up for a bunch of secondary duties in my mirth, and felt nothing bad about being told I might have to actually work in the coming year on getting the juniors trained and ready to do whatever it is we're supposedly doing. Getting a real job was an incredible morale boost to take to my fake job!

These are interesting and cool things and somehow I've finally gained a modicum of respect from those around me, even if it's just for skill and a little dampened by my other lunacy. The scariest thing in my life right now is that I might have actually fucking won, and I'm not used to that. I'm sure as the training year goes on and I get more acquainted with my other job I'll have more complaints, but if my strongest complaint is "I get paid to be told NOT to touch this thing I find very interesting quite as hard as I'd like" that's a good problem to have.

Switching from Java services to Kotlin/Go seems like make-work. Change my mind.
>>106483746from a technical pov it is even worse, modern java is a much better platform all things considered (performance, support, features including even LLMs are better@java I wager)the pool of java devs are much bigger than kotlin/go. OTOH java is the most jeetified language, so in the white male case it might worth the trade off, but keep in mind working in a niche subpar stack might affect long term employability. Also not dealing with @sprong@ is a blessing.
