How do I get into management? Serious question
Here's my stats
>26
>extremely good grade in economics/CS Frankenstein degree
>currently senior dev with a few more responsibilities but nothing you could call real management
>autistically good on an engineering level, and been doing senior level dev for almost 4 years now, total job experience is like 6 years
>outside of work some really tiny open source projects
That's about it
My current job is comfy and paying well, but it's not "retire before retirement age tier" and I'm getting the career ladder itch.
What do?
>>
>>106466536
>should I pivot
you should outsource your core competencies, and near-shore some tangible assets or tertiary processes, or maybe both
>>

>>106466718
>It obviously does
honest to god question, middle management is hell on earth, and these people, usually not IT based, are making money comparable to mid+/-senior positions. Also, a lot of IT guys are making uuuuge money just simply getting a higher position as a dev. There are some salary ranges available only to trusted employees.
>>
>>106466813
Define middle management, I've yet to see a company where middle management earns less than basic senior devs unless you're talking about some star devs in meme fields like ML.
I DONT mean product owners, that's not management IMO
>>
>>106466854
Just to clarify, for me middle management means everything team lead and above, or squad/department lead and below.
So basically people responsible for 5-30 people
>>
>>106466900
>So basically people responsible for 30+ people
yeah those are making dosh, I have no idea how to get there or how to help you son. I suppose, get lucky with a small company that will be shooting up the stars, and you are one of the OG squad, basically glorified nepotism.

"agentic" is not a word but "agent-based" would be a valid if ultimately useless phrase. really what makes "agentic" so egregious is that EVERYTHING is an agent. just saying that there is an agent involved is meaningless; if there was no agent, there would be no workflow. if anything, you are admitting that you, the coooooder are not an agent and do not have any influence on any process.

just call it what it is, "AI(-based) workflow". it's just a weasel word to get out of getting laughed at for leaning on AI slop, except also a self-own since it basically means "I outsourced it and didn't do anything myself" taken more literally

Also dating an Indian woman, but I'm the techfag. We have discussed the growing resentment of the American workforce to Indian offshoring particularly in the tech field. >>
>>106467336
I'm an asshole so whenever I hear the word "agentic" I MAKE people explain to me exactly what the agentic portion of this LLM pipeline is. Is it the ability to call tools if you have the LLM return JSON? Is it the ability for the LLM to chain together multiple calls until it completes a task?

Make the fags who use the word "agentic" make it very clear.

>shes just a higher caste who (rightfully) views the lower ones as slaves. shes still gonna scam you and everyone around you regardless

I actually did explain to her how Indian culture is basically just a big line of people shitting upstream from another (scamming) and she couldn't stop laughing.

Maybe. I'm not worried about a layoff because the typical pattern with layoff in the past was to get the invite to the all hands at 10am for a meeting at 10:30am, and find that half the staff was fired at 9am.

2 PhD's consider being a researcher for the military, lockheed martin being the premier in the field.

You need a degree to be an officer so consider doing that for either Navy, Space Force, or Airforce. Did she file a police report? If no, then that's on her and a legit reason to be fired. Unless she can show broken window or anything.

For IT, that means using your remote deactivation tool as soon as she makes a formal report approved by her manager.
Then data loss prevention and data security should be assessed and executed. That includes deactivation of her credentials on IT level, and the rest is to be handled by data teams and security.

Should be no gaps.

That said, on resumes people usually state start/end months, not down to the exact day. So like
>Job 1: Apr 2020 - Sep 2025
>Job 2: Sep 2025 - Present
Even if you got laid off today, as long as you get hired in September you can still make it look just fine. Hell I'd even say you can go one more month. If one job ends "Sep" and the next job starts "Oct", that'll still basically look like no gaps.

You can quit AT ANY TIME. Nobody is forced to take a job they don't want.

If you feel that you deserve more for your skills, then you are free to ask for your exact demands until you find someone who agrees with you. It's a free market.

I agree with regulations for safety. But everything else is completely fair game for the EMPLOYER to dictate. You don't have to agree, you don't have to take the job, you can ask for more compensation, it's up to you. But the EMPLOYER is the one creating jobs, taking on entrepreneurial risk, and contributing to society, not the employee.

Don't like it? Go start a business of your own. Good luck
>>
>>106478769

>>
>>106478786
At some point you need to realise that the free market is an idealization and that people really are forced into certain jobs by concrete facts like hunger and shelter, supporting family, physical location, and workplace drama, etc etc.

>I agree with regulations for safety. But everything else is completely fair game[...]
Just extend the concept of safety to something like bare essentials for staying alive, better yet, the essentials for citizens to maintain their dignity

wfh chads, I'm rotting away my 20's and I have no idea how to get out of this asocial mindspace

I went to japan and was a digital nomad for 1 month and that was even worse - I only spoke to 2 single moms that whole time. One was a 60ish dolt who did that Japanese "eeEEHHH???" to everything and it was embarrassing. She hid her daughter from me too. The other mom was a 34ish hipster who literally never slept and almost got us in a few car accidents. At the end of this trip I lost my voice from not using it.

I go to the gym and for walks and make some small talk with the indians I see there. The other white dudes are zoned out in a daze and aren't really approachable - plus I'm like 6 years older than most of them

I've been working from home for 3 years now - thanks for being amusing all the time. This is my only form of socializing.

At my job in the navy, I am a low-tier IT monkey and a mid-tier radioman, and at my other job, I'm a low-tier IT monkey but for an incredibly complicated piece of equipment where half of it is pieces of helicopters. These are interesting and cool things and somehow I've finally gained a modicum of respect from those around me, even if it's just for skill and a little dampened by my other lunacy.

The scariest thing in my life right now is that I might have actually fucking won, and I'm not used to that. I'm sure as the training year goes on and I get more acquainted with my other job I'll have more complaints, but if my strongest complaint is "I get paid to be told NOT to touch this thing I find very interesting quite as hard as I'd like" that's a good problem to have.

Technically speaking, today was an 8 hour day for one guy followed by a 4 hour day for someone else. And one was for the navy, one was for the air force. The Army can go fuck itself after all.

For me, it's Typhlosion.

I wanna understand the job description I am going to attain soon.
I thought I was an it specialist in Systemintegration, but the sticker for a newbie that got introduced as a system engineer.

I am situated in Germany, if that helps.
Just want to wrap my head around why a glorified sysadmin with scripting and coding experience is and what my future chances and career options might be.

>>106479857
Oof.
>>
>>106479857
well he didn't know color picker either, he was amazed at the technology

Do you have an engineering degree?
>>
>>106480422
Neither of us do.
Hence why I am so confused.
Though I am aiming for one, maybe first study on my free time. There is enough information where to get started.
>>
>>106480468
No engineering degree = not an engineer.

Hope that helps!
>>
>>106479937
What do you coworkers or team members do, then? Maybe that'd explain more.
>>
>>106480475
Thanks.

>>106480630
Well, we do several things, but in core that'd be this:
1 st level support
Helpdesk operations
Automation and legacy system maintenance
Device and user lifecycle management
Network and firewall maintenance, configuration
Risk management and weakness analysis
We are also currently doing a migration to the cloud, one of my projects is dealing with creating an intermediary step until the rest of the company is ready to move.

Not a meme. Eurotard here, Was talking with senior manager in my company (large multinational based in western EU) and said the single biggest red flag for a résumé in the industry are career breaks, more than 2-3 months. Both him and the HR agency they use share this opinion. He's also personally critical of "sabbaticals" etc.
I fucking hate this mentality as well, I think it's retarded, but it is what it is.
>>
>>106480948
Well, I had the same problem for another reason. A lot of setback, still constantly working, despite being a job I would pull my teeth out of now that I think about it.
They got impressed that I am such a cattle.
>>
>>106480948
As someone who has some gaps in-between jobs I'd love to hear the reasoning for that.
Between coasting and hoping you'll find something else and quitting and then actively looking something better without losing any energy in a job you no longer care about I will always chose the latter if I can afford it.

That's a pretty much description of the most basic generic role IT in any small company.
System integration may be an euphemism in that case, that you can take an advantage of - it can mean anything in your cv.

>you can quit at any time
And if you don't have a perfect excuse or already have a job offer lined up, the recruiter may as well think you got fired for raping and murdering your coworkers (not necessarily in that order) and you're fucked.

>we pay extremely low taxes
I set a manual $150 witholding from my every paycheck on top of the other taxes and still get told I owe money every tax day. Fuck you and your "our taxes are low". If taxes were any higher most people wouldn't be able to afford RENTING APARTMENTS. We'd be living in the streets and parks, and I don't want to hear any trust fund kid Dave Ramsey bullshit about how we under the same circumstances would totally for real own entire houses if we BEANS AND RICE WHILE LIVING IN A BOX FOR 40 YEARS following the advice of some rich faggot born with a silver spoon in his mouth.

Switching from Java services to Kotlin/Go seems like make-work. Change my mind.
>>
>>106483746
from a technical pov it is even worse, modern java is a much better platform all things considered (performance, support, features including even LLMs are better@java I wager)
the pool of java devs are much bigger than kotlin/go. OTOH java is the most jeetified language, so in the white male case it might worth the trade off, but keep in mind working in a niche subpar stack might affect long term employability. Also not dealing with @sprong@ is a blessing.
