It's definitely within the range of acceptable pairings. Depends on the games you play and the FPS you're targeting.
>>
>>106844818
mainly thinking of it because i’m trying out some light productivity on the side of my (relatively) easy to run games. granted, the heaviest game i would run would be gray zone warfare but i don’t think i’d need to worry since i still get ~120fps in a highly populated zone w/ my 5600x. i do want to use my 64gb ddr5 so that’s definitely pushing my buying schedule earlier.

It's so hard to mess this up nowadays. The actual pool of parts to select from is really quite tiny. People rag on the Nvidia-AMD duo (and Lil' Intel) being your only choices, but unless you are mainlander Chinese with access and proper support for their own homegrown products there isn't really all that much variety in builds except for budget builds scraping the bottom of the barrel for low prices.

Well it's certainly a reasonable upgrade if you have the funds (and the 7800X3D is still <$350). Pretty overkill for the games you play but it's fine to have headroom. Alternatively, you could drop it back to a 7700 or 9700X if you need to save money.

I didn't like the asuka 4090 all that much. They coulda chosen a better drawing of her than the one used

Thanks, and yeah the ftw3 looks great still, even better in white imo. I used satin white enamel paint for the backplate and matte white acryllic for the shroud. My only gripe is that I couldn't mask the red line on the backplate properly, so I just painted over it.
And yeah, the Asuka 4090 could've looked better, when it was in stock here it way 2800$ converted...
The eva01 3090 looked nice though, but i dont really like the shroud part of it

>>106846052
I think for VR raw horsepower is kind of better. Even one screen is very high resolution, and you have two eyes so it's even double that... grab something with a good amount of VRAM and power, I'd probably go for AMD, but depends on the prices around you. Upscaling can work in VR but if it's badly implemented (e.g. WRC, the rally game) you will notice the ghosting and feel nauseous instantly.
I have a 3090 and I can't crank the resolution up to native on my Pico4, it's not a weak card though.
Now that I remember, what might matter between vendors is the encoder, I'm not sure how good AMDs encoders are, but NVENC is known to be efficient. (since you'll be streaming your image either on wifi or cable to your headset)
Never cards also have AV1 but I'm not sure how it is for VR.
What headset were you planning to get? I'd suggest a second hand Quest2 (see if you can get a headstrap for it, the factory one is garbage), and if you like it then you can resell it and upgrade to a quest3 or something else (maybe valve's new headset)

Should I expect horrible bottlenecking with a 5080 + 5700x3d pair at 1080p? friend sold me his 5080 out of the blue and I don't have a 1440p monitor

>>
>>106846116

Alright no problem then. Next time let us know that in the post because, as you've seen, prices vary a lot by country.
>>
>>106846153
i mean i dont know what bottlenecking do you expect
that combo will cap any game you want to play at 1080 at whatever hz your monitor provides (im assuming its a 59 hz?)
Getting a ~180hz 1440p monitor should be your only priority right now
At the moment the monitor is the thing bottlenecking your pc
Then on a better screen the cpu will be the culprit as a 5080 gpu can handle anything but again thats on the future, as long as you dont have a better screen upgrading the cpu will mean nothing

4k 240hz
1440p 240hz

I tested different res/hz pairings and its slightly onfusing.
Changing 4k monitor hz to 120hz + 1440p 240hz makes me see <50w readings.
1440p 240hz alone = 35w
4k 240hz alone = 45w

There's a lot more to refresh rate than just the Hz
You can use CRU to edit those values and it they're matched, the GPU won't have to run it's vram at P0 state and waste 100w idling

Nothing new (AFAIK) but it was known for driver issues throughout its lifecycle. It might not have been the drivers, even, but a hardware defect affecting only certain units. I say that because one of the first "fixes" released cut the boost algo back. I guess if you've used it in the past and know what you're doing you could go for it (but then, if you bought a $400 card in 2019 why are you poormaxxing now?).

>My dad wants a new pc and will probably buy a new dell prebuilt
>Some people are saying black Friday is best though.
If he is set on a prebuilt ,and you are too to save yourself some headache, i couldnt imagine having to do IT for my dads computer, then yeah check the models you are interested in now and keep an eye for those on black friday. Usually a big brand like dell will have the event last the whole week, just make sure you compare with older prices to not get scammed.
If eventually you decide not to go with the prebuilt then its back to square one about never knowing which time is best, just come back with a budget and a list of needs and hopefully some anon here will help you.

Since 2007. The xmp profile only applies to the sticks that are in the same package.
You can probably get it running with 4 sticks by playing with the memory controller if you aren't on ddr5.
>>
>>106847616
It will run at JEDEC 99% of the time.
XMP/EXPO is just overclocking, it's not guaranteed to work on every system.
Official support for 4DIMM setups has always lower frequency.
With DDR4 it's not that bad but DDR5 4DIMM setups get fucked quite badly.
On AM5 it's silly 3600MT/s DDR5 for 4DIMM vs 5600MT/s for 2DIMM.
It will usually run at higher speeds but it's depending on IMC and motherboard quality.

4x32gb on ddr4 is hard to run above 3200mhz
Ddr5 pushes the envelope on speed which makes it exponentially harder to run two sticks on a single copper wire which is what happens when you run two sticks in a single memory channel

In a way that's what they did. Each DDR5 stick has two 32b sub-channels. I don't think we'll see physical quad-channel memory on consumer platforms any time soon. It's so expensive to implement that it'd defeat the point of client/server segregation.

Posting to check if there is something I missed or can still imporve on.
Only thing im not super sure about is the mainboard, if there is anything better (cheaper - dont need anything fancy) to buy I gladly hear about it.

Lot of the earlier stuff from beta was suggesting that most people would be realistically cpu bound, and to a marginally lesser extent even at native 4k. Were a lot of complaints of people who fell for the air cooler meme that their supposedly "efficient" amd processors were constantly throttling.
Which isn't surprising since it overall looks like bf4 and bf1 but with better textures and character models + maybe a bit more dense
>>
I think USB-C is a failed concept. I've never seen a reason for it.
>>
>>106849102
Sure there's always ways one can increase bandwidth but doing it before the necessary tech is mature leads to really expensive motherboards (and CPUs). Frankly we might already be there with the whole DIMM system; needing 10 layer PCBs to get reliable high-speed 2DPC is not exactly ideal.

If I had a large display this would only mean you have to window manage smaller gayer windows like 1080p (on a large 4k)

I have suffered long enough on cucked laptop use and single screen
my desktop died and I had 2 monitors which were shit also and ancient and small, shit I could probably just kept my other monitor if I got a hdmi cable but fuck that

pc use might literally be near unusable with a single screen really, a large screen would fix this if you have multiple windows open statically which is the same kinda thing yeah
but the point where you do a full screen application you are cucked again, what are you gonna play in a window mode in 1080p? crazy

monitors should be cheap and plentiful but they are also overpriced unless you buy them on sales
going back to poorfag lcd might be the wises move one can make

I probably should have built a 14600k budget build too at this point

The key take away being stay away from RDNA if you want a gpu to actually last longer than 2 years and that raw performance is no longer the most important metric.

Spend the extra 3 euros or so and get the B850 Eagle board if you plan to get a high-end CPU upgrade in the future.
The Gaming board is fine, but it has a 150W CPU power limit. 150W is more than enough for a 9800X3D for reference.

I thought I'd try replacing the ancient MX-4 paste on my i9-9900k with a PTM. I was skeptical of whether PTM was a meme or not, but it turned out good. CPU used to throttle during Prime95 Max Heat test before, now it's fine.
Installation was even easier than paste, I just put the PTM pad in the freezer the night before installation, cut it to approximate IHS size, removed the film from one side of the pad, put it on the IHS and applied some pressure with my palm to it for 10 seconds, and removed the upper film afterwards. The top film removed cleanly and it also pulled with it excess PTM material not touching the IHS.
If any other anons are thinking about PTMs, I can recommend them. I got the Thermal Grizzly Phasesheet PTM that's supposed to be genuine PTM7590.

Depends on what you're doing with that secondary monitor. You might find higher ppi better for document reading and media. Resolution and refresh rate don't have to match but I'm sure in 2k25 there are still some apps and games that may have minor issues such as scaling or slight hitching dragging across screens but most don't notice. There used to be issues a few years ago with multi monitor setups drawing more gpu power but those are resolved now. Go with what you like.

I hadn't actually thought of this. That makes sense. Essentially, the 2k main monitor would be for gaming, or whatever I'm focused on, while the secondary monitor would be for browser/chatting/explorer, music, etc. Other minor things where I'd prefer readability and whatnot.

my eyes hate 60hz and below so I'll probably go 1080p 144+hz or maybe even another 2k 144+hz. What's an example of a good "reading/media" high-ppi secondary monitor, anon?

Thank you

RenoDX isn't fake, if anything it's the closest to a native HDR implementation that's actually integrated into the game's rendering pipeline since it replaces the normal SDR rendering the game does.

RTX HDR (and Windows Auto HDR) take the SDR image the game renders and then tone-map it into HDR. This doesn't necessarily look bad but it loses any detail that the game already nuked when preparing its SDR output. If you do the HDR rendering in the actual game, these details would be visible. They also have more practical annoyances, like the fact that they HDR map game menus and UIs. Like if the game has some white text on the scree in SDR, RTX HDR and Auto HDR make it bright as all fuck.

>>106851725
RTX HDR looks better though, the gamma curve Auto HDR uses is retarded and fucked, it results in raised blacks and overall lowered contrast, it looks more washed out than it should. RTX HDR is better even just strictly for the reason that it's actually adjustable and you can make it look right. It seems to me that RTX HDR also gets brighter highlights, which is still probably just because you can adjust it. Auto HDR would be great but it's really neutered for no reason whatsoever, I have no idea what the fuck MS is thinking and why their defaults are so bad.

They both got positive professional & user reviews.

IPS monitors around this price range will look and perform about the same, with panel lottery & factory color calibration quality making the biggest visual difference.
The ASUS monitor is considered to be the better one in the pack because it has good factory color calibration, offers single overdrive mode, and black frame insertion (ELMB-Sync).

For CPUs it don't matter. The best spreader + heatsink will spread it on contact. Having too little paste is worse than having too much.

setup my DB4 passive ITX case build to log CPU temp and package power then ran a script to visualize and fit the system thermal response curve.
Case: Streacom DB4 (2 panels on CPU, 1 on PSU)
CPU: Ryzen 7 8700G
PSU: Streacom ZF240

Room temp: ~69F (20C)

Let system idle at ~42 C with nothing open.
Ran stress-ng --cpu 8 for 60–180 s to generate steady 50 W load, this didn't work very well and I'm not familiar with this stress-ng and it let my CPU idle at 20W, so I just opened librewolf at the same time (worst optimized hack of a project OS in history) and it quickly spiked one core to 100% utilization and temp to 85C
After about a minute I terminated the load and recorded the cooldown curve.
Fitted exponential decay to derive thermal time constant t, thermal resistance R, and effective thermal capacitance C_eff.

The results: Idle: 42 C
Full CPU load: ~85 C steady (no throttling)
Effective ambient (inside chassis): 45–75 C
R: 0.25 C/W
t : 180 s
C_eff : 740 J/C

So the DB4 dissipates around 1C per 4 W of CPU heat (per R 0.25 C/W) with a 3 min thermal time constant. The neat caveat is that the CPU core itself cools extremely fast dropping from 85 C to 42C in about 10 s once load stops while the chassis remains hot, because the inertia I measured belongs to the aluminum mass, not the silicon.
Aluminum’s specific heat is 900 J/kg C. From the fit data the system C_eff is 740 J/C, which corresponds to about 0.8 kg of aluminum thermally coupled to the CPU through the heatpipes. so, when the CPU power falls off its die temperature plummets instantly but the walls of the case still hold hundreds of joules of stored heat. That slowly leaks into the surrounding air and partially back into the CPU over the next few minutes, so the temp decay curve is incredibly smooth and stable with longterm equilibrium around 80–85c.
>>
>>106852485
Either is fine, but you can plug in the power cables first if you want. What you should do is install the NVME drive first before the the GPU as it's so large that it often eclipses the M.2 slot where you secure it down.

hit 2000 character limit.

Nothing else besides librewolf generates this much heat. Not WoW on high settings, not running a 70B Q8 GGUF model, both just cap out at 75C for sustained load. librewolf is just a really, really bad browser.

To the touch, the RAM (96GB) hurts, but everything else including the CPU cold plate and the copper heat pipes are fine to touch. I think I need bigger heat sinks on RAM.

I'm building a pc for my little sister who has never had a gaming PC before.

How are these specs for a decent build:

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 7600x

Mobo: ASRock B650i lighting wifi (I already own it, and that's why I went with the 7600x instead of the 9600x)

GPU: AMD RX 6600 (already own it)

Case: Asus AP201 black

Cooler: Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE V3 (I finally broke my crippling noctua addiction and got a cheaper cooler)

Storage: 2 TB 990 Evo Plus (already had one handy, didn't need to buy it)

RAM: 2x16 Corsair vengeance 6000 CL36 MHz

PSU: Corsair RM750x

Case fans: 5xThermalright TL-C12C with 4 pin hub (because the cheapo asrock mobo only has one chassis fan connector)

Monitor: Amazon basics cheapo 27" 100 Hz IPS that I already have. I have an extra cheapo Logitech mouse and keyboard set for her to start with too.

Total cost: $605

I don't think it's so bad. How did I do?

Any speed differences between most modern SSDs are neglible outside of benchmarks because QD1 Random Read/Writes & Access Latency are all the same on them which is what client end users "feel" as the speed of their storage.

Slight savings on the PSU with a bit more wattage to boot (both have 10-YR warranties):

I have a pet theory on this that it will only hurt middlemen in the US that don't actually do anything. They can't actually sell goods in the US past their saturation point (which they already have). That is, if they're buying a table from China for 100 dollars and they're selling it for 2000, it's because they've optimized to hit the peak of what the market will bear. On a mass, national market scale, there is nowhere for that 30% to come from besides the pockets of middle men drop shippers.

In any case, I'll have to be less stingy this month and drop a few grand on the last few pieces of solid walnut and sandalwood furniture I've been importing from China for the last year. I may not be buying a bookcase from a US middleman for $10k, but Chinaman isn't going to pay the tariffs if I import, so I'll still be out an additional 30% on a $1100 walnut book case.

There will be 4 pin fan headers all over the board and they're labelled. They accept both 3 pin which are dc controlled fans etc or 4 pin which are pwm. Make note of fans whether they are 4 pin or 3 pin because that will dictate how you can control their speed.
