Anyone know of any good gaming laptops for CAD/design work?
We've ordered some new Clevos for our design team at work in 2024 and some are experiencing power issues just after a year of use
We've had our colleague's refuse to boot this morning, and had to reboot numerous times for it to recognize the Windows boot partition, which indicates a loose or faulty SSD, or a fault in the OS installation
Our company really wants something ≤£2,000 but I need to shill them a good CAD/gaming spec laptop so we can prevent these issues

what are your requirements exactly? Do you want some hw wrapper around a powerful GPU? Why do you need laptop form factor to begin with? Why not a big server with dumb clients?

if you are somewhat professional just get a mac/lenovo like a sane company. It's all CAPEX anyway. If you are autists, you can look into Framework laptops for example. If you are really cheap the laptop ff probably does not worth the premium

>it's all capex anyway
True but we often have to fight with the board when we don't want it coming out of IT's budget
We get really good deals + warranty on these Clevos, but the fact they're breaking one by one is upsetting the sales and design directors
It generally just needs to be a run of the mill i7, 30x/40x Nvidia Geforce, 16GB RAM laptop; we install studio drivers when installing W11 on it and I'm going to suggest to my boss that we either order new ones with 32GB of RAM, or keep an eye out and order another 16GB module if they multitask like a couple of my colleagues and shit gets slow
They basically need a mobile workstation where they can plop it down with the client on or off site and start cracking on- I'm completely against laptops for them, but our company's ethic is all about making it more convenient for the customer, which means a lot of site visits

>>106846086
That's actually my next job
If my colleague doesn't have a complete power failure over the next few working days, I need to meet them at their showroom and reinstall everything on the new SSD, get licenses moved over (in the hands of the software vendors), and hope for the best
BUT it WOULD be more convenient for them if I got a new laptop ready, let them switch over in their own time, and get the old one back to assess the problem, as their whole department is stacked out for the next couple weeks at least

I wouldn't be surprised if the work here was a contributing factor as well. Company culture is all about sucking each other's dick and hush-hushing everything bad. That's why a lot of FAANG companies are all like "come here we have gyms and recreational spaces on our campus," because the work itself is just mentally draining.

I wish it were that easy.
The PM is very retarded, I wasn't joking about that. If you go to him and present a technical bug (say, "this is not correctly addressing a null case") he can't understand what the problem is about. Then he de-prioritizes it into "never will be done".
I can't even improve logging (and I mean "go to a logger we already have and add an extra variable"). Nothing like this ever gets approved. It's a complete deadlock for developers, except for their "change the color of this button" types of tickets which are pretty pointless.
>>
>>106848919
>he can't understand what the problem is about
You're probably trying to be too correct (and honest). This is a non-technical person and you basically need to dumb it down to "the program won't work if this isn't fixed" or "we won't be able to maintain the program if this isn't refactored".

Each reboot was in a different language too lol
One day, another reboot in another language will happen because I can't escape myself
>>
>>106848957
>You're probably trying to be too correct (and honest). This is a non-technical person and you basically need to dumb it down to "the program won't work if this isn't fixed"
I'm trying, anon. Trust me. But these are the types of conversations I have: >>106844817.
He's not only retarded, he thinks he's brilliant. I give him a watered down, human-level explanation and get a response like "what does this mean technically?", to which I give a technical description, and get a reply like "I don't get why this is important" or the likes.
It really is a unique situation, in my 5yoe I've never been under a manager like this. I'm not even sure how he landed his job in the first place, which is even worse - because it points to him being very good friends with upper management. In turn, this points to him being able to blame the devs when the next layoff inevitably comes.
>>
In the devops world nothing fucking works.
I'm supposed to do stuff without any experience or knowledge, it feels like gluing things together and hoping it works (inevitably it doesn't work or it breaks soon after).
>skill issue
I guess so, but I can't learn shit in this environment, products always break and the job market is terrible so I can't even switch it up a bit.
Am I supposed to do courses and certifications in my free time? I don't think any certification can prepare you for things acting erratically.
Fuck, at least trades probably have predictable tasks and you don't have to pull your hair out figuring out why X isn't working for seemingly no reason when the exact same setup procedure worked last time.
What the fuck, I'm retarded and tired. Is it a problem with me or is being a sysadmin in current year really this bad? I wonder if I'm just low IQ, all this tedious work just to get stuff up and running doesn't make sense, it's mindboggling. There's always some obscure error or issue to troubleshoot and that's just the tip of iceberg when you have to design an entire infrastructure architecture alone.
How do I become a competent professional and not waste time on bullshit issues? There has to be a better way for doing things.

well, for me, it's building an E-Bike and I already dropped money on a hub with wheel rim coming with a manual made of chinese google translate, I can't find any data sheets for anything in the kit, the hub itself is apparently for FWD models since it has nowhere to mount gears, and the battery has the wrong fitting. During my liquor store ruin just today I picked up some bullet connectors from an automotive shop to at least fix the last part, but even then a hub motor with a seven(!) pin connection to make my canadian tire special into a front-wheel-drive motorcycle with an anemic off-brand battery is just not something I want to deal with right now in favor of drinking and crying about the "tech industry" and how it's somehow been stuck in the cold war since 1944
>>
>>106849034
>I'm supposed to do stuff without any experience or knowledge, it feels like gluing things together and hoping it works
That's how all devops are. My understanding is that "senior devops engineers" are people who learned to word things in confusing ways (helped a lot by AWS naming, don't tell me names such as ECS/ECR or SCS/SQS were not chosen to have spoken sentences sound confusing). But still, they don't do much more than gluing things around and hoping for the best.

>"senior devops engineers" are people who learned to word things in confusing ways
You know I had this experience with an "expert" coworker who was supposed to help me with a specific thing. He gave me a word salad instead of telling me the straight to the point non-bullshit answer. All I got from him was a 2 hours-long meeting with no practical advice. I had to spend days reading on my own just to learn that I simply needed to set up a load balancer with a virtual IP and why it's needed. I believe making up bullshit presented as "consulting" is the reason why seniors get paid.
>>
>>106849131
Just because you were too stupid to understand doesn't mean it's word salad. If anything, actual experience in your trade would have let you decipher what the fuck he meant and you'd do the equivalent in whatever nonsense software/hardware gaggle you use there.
>>
>>106849131
>All I got from him was a 2 hours-long meeting with no practical advice
Yeah, that sums up my experience.
There's also the "We should use AWS ShittenFarten instead of AWS Poopdecker". Then you look into them and they're literally the same thing, with the one suggested by the "expert" being more expensive.

only rules are
>if it works don't fuck with it

>once you've fucked with it, if it continues to not work you are morally obligated to find someone more competent who you believe, in good faith, can fuck with it and make it work (even if they don't, your moral responsibility ends at finding that contact)
>if it doesnt work even then, whatever, you tried
>if it starts to work after your fucking with it or finding a contact to fuck with it, stop
>if your fucking with it was unsuccessful, including finding a contact that might be successful, you are not to fuck with it any more, you are actively barred from fucking with it

>it creates so many perverse incentives.
Exactly. Within my cult it's a one-chance fireball. You don't like how something works? If you're so smart, submit a proposal, assemble a team, make it happen, and once you're in the swing of creation, the fear of a single regression is long past and enough has happened that the project is one big Fey Mood. But when QA time comes, you'll be very cognizant of the requirement to not break anything twice. Notice that I didn't say that breaking stuff is disallowed. Just breaking one thing in two or more spots.

If you don't have a good idea, don't mess with it, and if you want to mess with it, be very sure that you're not going to fuck it up. I foresee "perverse incentives" and maybe even disincentive towards innovation, but the core idea is just don't fuck up what already works, and if it doesn't work, don't just sit on it, fucking fix it or find someone who can.

You were though or you're just autistic. So I am thinking of changing my current position, but I don't know exactly how I should proceed, I would try to go to a architect role, but not as a senior.
I have 3-4 years working experience during my study years (fullstack dev, technical lead, react, nodejs)
now I am working as full stack dev: react, c# (but not on a senior level honestly), also knowledge about terraform, cdk and general lead dev stuff (without payment or title as a lead dev).

If I want to go to another position, what would you anons suggest me I should go for? Cloud architect? Senior Fullstack dev?

The code is like 30+ years old, most of it is essentially untestable in the normal sense. Some teams have managed to clean their parts up enough that they can do some unit tests, but no one on my team seems to care enough, and I don't either.
I did ask AI to try and write one test and after like an hour of looping, it had mocked half the system and still couldn't get the test to compile.
>>
>>106855422
We have regressions all the time
>>
The worst part is when people paste AI slop and use it in their communications. Like passing it off as something they would say. It makes my blood boil for some reason.

I know background checks can tell employers if you graduated from a college, but do they tell them the exact major your degree was in? Will they know if I lie about majoring in CS when my degree was in something else?

30 min is barely enough to cover basic pleasantries, it's just an initial confirmation to make sure you can hold a human conversation and your resume isn't a complete catalog of lies.
Talk about recent stuff on your resume when asked and answer their basic fizzbuzz-tier questions, then HR will contact you to schedule the real hours-long hazing session shortly afterwards, and that's the one where you have to outperform everybody else who applied. If you ever manage to fail a job application on the initial phone screen then you are doing something catastrophically wrong.

leetcode has been the single worst thing to happen to the industry. employees have to go through leetcode, then become the interviewers, because they had to do leetcode they make the people they interview do leetcode and the cycle continues. these brain teasers do not reflect real life.
>>
>>106858445
Your analysis is shortsighted.
LC became popular because it solved a problem: bootcampers who'd claim to be experts but couldn't fizzbuzz. It was originally in good spirit and was good for a while.
But it eventually became "a metric" so now it's power creeped out of control. Interviewees are expected to do thousands of LC and will be handed a LC-insanely-hard question which, honestly, is "either you've seen it before and know how to solve it or it's impossible to solve in the allotted time".
My last interviews didn't have leetcode though, I think it's going out of style.
>>
>>106858518
yes, i get that. but fizzbuzz was necessary to have some time of filter. but now leetcode is a humiliation ritual for people who even know how to build and architect programs. i know senior principle engineers that would fail current junior entry leetcode. the fact this is allowed and benifits the bots who grind leetcode for hours is insane. it is not a reflection of the real work being done.
>>
I've never had to do LeetCode and I don't think I've ever heard about it being a metric in my country.
>>
>>106858862
That's because whichever country is "your country" doesn't have a competitive tech job market.
>>
>>106858851
Yeah, I agree.
Thankfully AI has kinda ended LC-style interviews, so at least, I think, we're reverting back to normalcy.

Leetcode? I try and ask people in interviews if they can do something really simple like plug in an additional monitor to a computer and extend the desktop or clone it. You'd be surprised how many people think they know how to do this but cannot without assistance.
>>
>>106858969
You make a request to merge your code in with someone else's
At my work you need 2 people to approve it
They spend 1 month making 2 comments a week about how they want variables renamed
Once the code is merged we realize the logic was incorrect and it crashes
>>

Or use an adapter. The display properties is hard because you might have to click the screen you want to change etc. Either you know how to do it, or you need to be able to figure it out on the fly. It changes with every release of Windows too. Never seen a Windows key + p Chad yet.

>The media promotes an insane standard of living
What a retarded opinion.
"inflated standard of living" is barely a problem, unless you're a 35 year old girl who spends too much time on Instagram.
The problem in the West is that high-efficiency in some areas has allowed for highly-negative-efficiency in others, meaning society still works but with things which are extremely negative in your live. The very concept of "mental illness" is one of those, there's a guy who spent 50 years studying very specific topics in medicine, biology, and chemistry to produce a pill that silence the natural and healthy negative feelings someone might have. Your work sucks, you don't have a gf, you live in a 1m2 box amongst neighbors who'd stab you for a loaf of bread? Doesn't matter, just take the pill and you'll forget about it all.
At the end of the day, young people are not able to get the most basic adult milestones: own a house, marry and have a family, become respected in what they do. Hell, even having friends is becoming out of reach for younger generations. If all of these were a given but "the media" still "promoted insane standards of living" no one would give a shit, just like third worlders don't kill themselves - despite strong exposure to social media - because their social fabrics are still preserved to some extent.

yeah that's true, my paranoid schizophrenic neighbour is just expressing his natural healthy feelings :)
>>
>>106860563
Don't play dumb, you know what I mean.
There's a difference between schizophrenia, a disease that has been observed for millennia, and "depression" or "anxiety", descriptions of human emotions which somehow became clinical conditions.
Any normal human should feel depressed and anxious about modern living, that's the whole point.
>>
>>106860620

I don't, you have personally drawn the line on what is and is not a mental illness

If we're talking about a side project you can monetize, look into how many people are paying for it. The more people who are paying for it, the more likely its worth pursuing.

2. Paper trail the fuck out of everything you can. Make sure it is clear by saved chats, emails whatever that you and your team brought up every problem and attempted to correct.
