I side-graded my shitrig from an i5-4440 to an i7-2600. I mostly did this because the heatsink literally fell off from age and the old dell was cheaper than ordering a new old stock cooler. And i pooled all the ram together so now there's 16gb ddr3
>>107033316I was thinking of mobo swapping my i5 4440 pile of junk to something semi-modern like an i3 12100 + 16GB DDR4 3200. There's some guy selling a combo deal on that CPU+MOBO+RAM for 140 euro and I'm tempted, just to have a second PC with a CPU from this decade instead of a piece of garbage. Would pair nicely with the RX 570 I have inside it, which seemingly gets heavily bottlenecked by the 4th gen i5.
>>107033338you could set up a nice server with that 12100, run some local services like immich, vaultwarden and even a media server if you're into that
>>107033338Honestly i find my shitrig with its r9 280 surprisingly effective. I always think "oh this pos can't play this game" yet it pulls through, sometimes even at 60fps.

You can definitely tell the difference between real 1440p and fake 1440p (DLSS quality). It's 1707x960 which is less than 1080p. Lots of game effects depend on exact resolution scaling like 1080p or 720p and 1707x960 is a awkward resolution that breaks a lot of effects.

>>107034512I have 6TB version because I wanted cheap external HDD. Expect noisy and slow drive, it's SMR after all.I won't comment on reliability because it either dies right away or it doesn't.
Memory brand doesn't matter much unless you're going after ones with tighter timings & lower voltages.Patroit has a few DDR5 kits with a lower CL, but the rest of the primaries aren't as good as GSkill or other manufacturers.Basic 6000MT/s 30-40-40-XX @ 1.35~1.40 could be manually tightened; you're paying extra for the manufacturer's guaranteed EXP/EXPO speed & timings.
Building from a desktop scratch and the priority is gaymen. Then I'd like enough headroom for future proofing and tinkering with VMs and other stupid shit I throw at it. I'm torn between the ryzen 5 and 7 x3d cpus. Is there a way to keep the power draw and noise low when I'm not multisperging with a game+whatever else? I want to comfortably play gta6 when it's released on pc and transition to pc gayming entirely.
>>1070346275070ti actually draws less power, especially if you're undervolting. If you're worried about the cable, even on the 5090 and 4090 it's extremely rare for it to burn up + it's being adopted on amd cards now too, so eventually you're probably going to have to live with it.

Just got this monitor delivered today from a recommendation of an anon here earlier this month. What's the easiest RTX 5080 card to mod?I'm thinking of doing pic related (Noctua fans + custom shroud). I hate how most GPUs look nowadays and just want one that's silent and boring looking. The founders 5080 looks nice but is too loud. I'm on a 3080 FE and don't want to get another loud card.
Nvidia xisters is it finally time for us to end our sad pathetic lives and join the 41%? Outer Worlds 2 another UE5 GeForce sponsored game just came out and the Radeon cards are all faster than our competing Nvidia equivalents even though we are supposed to have an advantage in Unreal Engine. 9070 XT is faster than FUCKING $1000 5080 IN THIS GAME FOR FUCK SAKE!!!!!I don't want to live anymore it hurts my neovagina too much...
>>107036449Ironically the FE is probably the easiest because all the big reviewers do teardowns. Not that it'd take well to the mod you have in mind - better to pick a conventional fullsize PCB. Or a factory Noctua model if you have money to burn.
>>107033038Would it be a bad idea to pair a 1080p monitor with my 1440p monitor? I already have a 1440p setup, but I was thinking about buying a 1080p vertical monitor for comics, pdfs, and manga. But I'm not quite sure if the 1080p monitor would synergize with my 1440p monitor. Would I still be able to keep my 1440p resolution on my main monitor? Or would I have to downscale it to 1080p, every time I want to use my 1080p monitor?
>>107036309I've yet to experience any issues with MSI. Did they also fuck something up now?

I've got an old pc that needs upgrading badly. It's got a fractal design r5 case and an 850w seasonic psu, but the cpu/mobo are 4th Gen Intel, and the GPU is an r9 390 8gb. Was thinking of getting a 3070ti, and considering getting like a 10th+ Gen i7 workstation tower off ebay and stealing the cpu/mobo/ram. Does that even make sense to try these days? Looking to maximize bang for buck, would prefer to come in under $500 for the whole project.

>>107036977B850 Gigabyte Gaming or Gigabyte Eagle is a bit cheaper and should be good enough for most PC gamers.
AIO vs Air.Which is actually better? My own little schizo theory is that AIOs are pushed heavily because they have a bigger profit margin for the companies making them, and their actual performance is pretty like-for-like.
>>107037051bot post
>>107037051Noctua realized they've peaked with the NH-D15 G2, and they're making an AIO using Asetek's pump.
>>107037017I'd like to run VR, but the r9 390 is not adequate anymore. Why 12th Gen at the oldest? Obviously I'm out of the loop on Intel, I use an AMD laptop mostly, but there's very little available for used AMD workstation pcs.A cursory look at ebay seems to show that used desktops are a way shittier deal than used laptops. I'd hoped companies would offload thousands of ~5 year old Dell optiplexes or whatever the same way they do old ThinkPads, but it doesn't seem to be the case.
>>107036979That's a difficult order to pull off for that low of a budget. I threw together something that would be pretty damn decent without digging into refurb/open box/used markets, but it still came out above budget without factoring in tax. You could probably cheapen it by cutting corners on the GPU (I picked a good budget option), but there isn't much room to play with. It's also assuming you're going to reuse the case and PSU as well as all connected devices. There's the usual shopping around, putting more time deal hunting. You already mentioned being willing to go with used items off ebay, so a refurb/open box variant of components could do you well for extending what you can get.>i3It actually outclasses a 6th gen i7 by quite a bit while using less energy, so it definitely outclasses your current 4th gen.A 3070Ti, last I checked, would be pretty hard to get for a decent price too, and would make it way harder to fit your low budget.
>>107036979Don't bother with anything before alder lake. Also these newer prebuilts suck ass to try and upgrade anywaysDDR4 isn't worth at this point unless you see a good combo or something. 12100 would also be a decent upgrade from a 4770 or whatever you're using if you're trying to make it even cheaper. 12600k you're better off with an aio (which are cheap now) but you could make a tower cooler work.8gb is getting kind of annoying even at 1080p, but you want (need) dlss, so I would do either a 3080 or a 2080ti, which I'd say is the cheapest gpu that is genuinely still decent to use.You got an at least okay psu right?>>107037051>pretty like-for-like.That's just not true though

>>107038742no shame on anon it's just a bad idea IMO to get an 8gb card in 2025 with modern games being such bloated shit that can't even run on high-end cards like >>107038708if that's all the budget can allow it's fine, the 16GB version does feel like a waste for that tier of card but there is no 12GB option and the 9070 is basically the same price as the 9070xt.
>>107038786I'm more thinking everything else.Buying a "cheap" PSU, buying an i3 (older one at that), I'm sure someone would say something about the board. Or hell, there is an attitude going around about not building cheap desktops period and how you should get a cucktop instead. Not going to kick the nest on GPUs speaking on that
>>107035331No clue my uncle built my first computer. Second I built with a friend and it had a gtx960. Been with me ever since.
>>107038829fair enough anon, I actually agree with you, the i3 is fine for most shit you'd be playing with a build like that. the cpu in the pc I'm typing this on is from 2011.
>>107038708Those framerates tell me that every single video card is nigger garbage
>>107038829PC gaymer culture has developed such a consoomer mindset I don't think they even realize how capable a cheap/mid range PC even is. any game that released on the PS4 can run on a toaster at max settings.
>>107033397Don't care I'm getting 4k anyway, even "worse" (according to whiners) I'm getting a 27 inch one so I can sit at arms length and not have to move my head to see everything.
>>107038725More expensive than an entire build with the next step down of GPU by the way, they did that on purpose to punish redditor consoomer faggots who actually play dogshit games like the outer worlds 2 and assassin's creed shadows.
>>107038997That's fine, according to their chart at one meter 4/5k is ideal for that size screen.
>>1070389974k 27" is literally perfect, don't let the mentally unhinged 55" TV "monitor" people tell you otherwise.
>>107039049Nothing wrong with any screen size. It's all about distance from where you are viewing. The bigger the screen the further back you can sit and get an ideal picture.
>>107038988The biggest problem I see in the current hobby is this idea that you must have enough to pay for a certain tier of components or it's not worth it. You also have retards like LTT that hate low end new components and try to justify complicating things by buying used instead. My first PC was all brand new, an i3 2120, gtx 550 ti, 1.5tb hdd and 4gb of RAM. Probably wasn't the most cost optimized thing in the world at $600 for the time but I loved everything about it. Hard to say if I would have been happier with anything else.
>>107038988Sir the PS4 was 12 years ago.
>>107039058At my desk I can lean in to look at small details the way you would a drawing, can't do that with a TV.
>>107039088Yeah and they're still making games for it. The resident evil 4 remake can run on 10+ year old gpus.
Im worried about consuming contents on 1440p. Everything is 1080p and would look better on 4k.
>>107036783It's only shit on the 9800x3d because all the heat comes from one point and that aio isn't good at dealing with it for some reason. It works fine on almost any other cpu even the 9950x3d. If you don't have a 9800 there is nothing to worry about.
>>107039150>>107039150>>107039150
>>107038708>Another game where GeForce wins and AMD nigger GARBAGEThe 5090 can't even do 4k 60fps Jewvidia users should just rope at this point including you faggot even the 7900XTX is still holding strong also how are those AI drivers with black screen issues and full system restarts sucks to suck
>>1070392757900XTX is losing BADLY to the 4080 AMDrones said it was better than, SAD
>>107039157As chiplets keep getting smaller will they eventually have to design different packaging or different cooler heat spreaders to deal with the hot spots?
