I should’ve just accepted that my job is real, stopped chasing a new one, and focused on my hobby. But holy shit my job feels like a fake ass job with zero stability. Why can’t I just work for someone who actually hires me? Why am I stuck working for a client who has a client?

Linda from finance just got "Hacker of the Year".

She doesn’t use Kali Linux and doesn’t know what a TCP handshake is. She still types with two index fingers.

But last week, Linda successfully bypassed our $200k EDR solution, our Next-Gen Firewall, and our mandatory "Phishing Awareness" training.

How JT you ask?

She really, really wanted to open an email attachment called 2026_Q1_Bonus_Adjustments/zip.

The cyber industry loves to blame Linda. We put her in a "high-risk user" group and make her watch a 40-minute animated video about not clicking links.

But Linda isn't the problem.

Relying on an under-caffeinated finance manager to spot a reverse-proxy adversary-in-the-middle attack at 8:30am is not a security strategy.

If you actually want to stop the "Linda's" of the world from accidentally nuking your network, stop trying to patch human curiosity.

Strip the admin rights. Linda is in finance. She does not need the ability to execute unverified binaries or install new software.

Block the garbage. Why is your email gateway still allowing .iso, .vbs, and .lnk files through to end users?

Kill the SMS code. MFA is great until an attacker intercepts the text message. Move your critical staff to hardware keys.

Linda was hired to run payroll, not to be your primary firewall.

Stop expecting her to do your job.

how to avoid timewasting requests from users? for example imagine if you implement some feature and document what it does / how its used (including multiple screenshots) then users ignore that info and ask you to call and explain it to them (because they "dont understand it" aka didnt try)
>>
>>108170436
Grow a spine and tell them to read the documentation. Put them at ease by saying you’re super busy. Are you a jeet btw?
>>
>>108170488
no im white thats why i have some modicum of politeness and feel bad to refuse the request
but its enraging me because this shit feels so self explanatory it shouldnt need me to explain it
>>
>>108170436

I have found that this is often caused by responding too quickly to questions

You have already answered their questions by providing documentation to their questions, which is the first step.

Next strip is to practice a TCP inspired back off solution where you exponentially increase the delay to responding to each question.

Remember, feeding the ducks just causes them to stick around and look for more food.
>>
>>108170542
i honestly wouldnt mind if they were just asking some text questions that i could respond to at my leisure, this is more like some boomerism where they cant intake written information so want to have a call where someone reads it out loud to them for them to feel like they "understand" it

Reminds me of cops and tipped workers. Cops brag about not getting speeding tickets and being able to get away with all manner of small crimes because their fellow cops cover for each other but when the subject of corruption comes up, those same cops will deny that there is any special treatment for them. Tipped workers will brag about how much they make from tips and how little of that income they report on their tax returns but then will turn around and claim they are impoverished, making less than minimum wage which is why you should tip 30% or more.

40% of domestic jobs are immigrants in SWE. that was 2019 data. the AI is "actually india" because they only hire their own. its an intentional takeover of the tech industry sold off in some trade deal.
llms are probably only introducing tons of bugs and technical debt while making small tasks slightly easier. the mistakes it makes on small tasks with latest models is impressive. its way too hit or miss.

Imagine this scenario, if you will:
>small business, 100 employees range
>two groups of employees at hand, A and B
>group A's work too often causes high stress issues for customers, which eventually are solved with help of group B
>suggestions from group B to A to reduce incident quantity are largely ignored or met with gaslighting
>group B takes on more and more responsibilities, arguably traditionally expected of group A, to avoid mistakes when they're performed by group A, to the point group B's regular duties are done as side tasks
>group B suspects some incompetence in group A, management shares the belief, aware of displeasure expressed by customers
>management orders group B to accept the state of matters, uninterested in moving the additional workload back to group A
As an employee within group B, seeing and describing things from my inherently subjective point of view (in other words - there's a non-zero chance I am the retard), what should I understand from this response?

I don't get this whole docker, kubernotes and all this shit but I do understand git. Tranny drama aside, and totally unrelated to work but i i had some hiccups migrating a bananapi r3 mini running openwrt version 21.x to 24.x. I had to build my own image to get the 7gb of flash visible by eMMC but things work fine now, and the newer version has kmod-tun in the package list meaning I can actually get tailscale to work (in v21 it could install but you couldnt ping other tailscale network ips or use magicdns aka useless). So im glad that works i just have to migrate all my custom services since im on a fresh install

>>108175524
I think it would surprise you, but one of the biggest differences is the kind of AI people encounter. 95% of people's only interaction with AI is AI slop videos, bots or AI mode on google. If this is your only encounter with AI, and this is what you get for increased prices of RAM and cost of living, no wonder people hate AI.

But scientists and most people on here not only use better models, but a lot of them even pay for AI, getting access to the best models or second best models out there. I don't bother with it anymore, but I used to respond to comments talking how AI failed to do something and asked if they used thinking mode, and they either did not knew they did not used thinking mode or didn't knew there was a difference. While nowadays the difference is no longer that big, it used to be gigantic, with non thinking models very often being wrong.

So I don't think it's surprising or startling at all. I think it's expected and actually even reasonable. If people actually knew what AI can do, and that it basically will answer all of their questions correctly, I think the response would be much different.

There was a single person in my high school graduating class who I thought would amount to something impressive in the tech field. Not like the next Jeff Bezos or Mark Zuckerberg or whatever, but I figured he'd be a startup founder, making 7-figures at Google by his early 20's, arrested for hacking the FBI lol, something like that. Every so often I get curious and search for him on the Internet and find nothing past 2019. I grew up with Myspace, I consider myself pretty great when it comes to OSINT, but this dude's a ghost. I would assume he's dead, but his Steam account goes online every month or so.

>since I've started selecting the "I don't wish to self-identify" options on the demographic surveys I haven't gotten a single interview. coinky dinky?
In all of 2019 i was unemployed looking for work. When the year turned 2020 i decided to put my racial identity as "hispanic" and the same Fortune 100 company that had turned my application down 6 times prior whilst reposting the same job accepted me within a week without even an interview for an IT position making ~$60k a year (might have been a bit less, i dont remember). That job lasted 5 years

I totally recommend being hsipanic, asian, black, queer, etc... just because they need those demographics for some quota

My boss just refused to give me a raise jfl

I am making 50k a year in Spain (which is good enough here and comfy), but I've been thinking about actually trying to make a lot of money, aka something close to 100k, which would be the equivalent of making 200k+ in the US.

Here, if you're fired, you get a compensation that is roughly 1 month of tax free pay for each year you were at the company, on top of unemployment. So you stack up income stability the longer you stay. So far I've been at the company for 3 years. This prevents me from job hopping and makes trying to get a promotion an attractive option, if I can manage it. Because so far it's not going well.

I know the real reason I didn't get a raise. It's both because I took 3 months of sick leave a while ago (because I had anxiety but they think it was a digestive illness, this is a common thing in Europe and not as bad as it may sound to americans, the way it works is, doctors approve the sick leave if they think you need it, then the company is notified and has to pay you for however long it lasts (big corps have an insurance for this), the reason is confidential, but out of courtesy I gave them an explanation because you're kind of expected to, but didn't tell the truth, as they'd lose all respect for me if they knew its anxiety).

But although that probably played a role, I think this was more important: They know I'm coasting. Normies are so perceptive. The same way people tell if someone is autistic in milliseconds, they just know I'm coasting and doing the minimum and I can't help it. I need a communication method to prevent this. When I didn't work remote, I found pushing the keys really hard when typing unironically helped. What do I do for a similar psychological effect when working remotely?

Also would you interview somewhere else or keep trying? (considering the context specific to Spain that I explained)

>>
>>108179916
Based that you moved back in with parents, there's nothing wrong with that.

Boomers are literal thieves. What they are doing with the housing market, which Trump explicitly admitted they're doing in purpose, amounts to extortion as opposed to free market. Homes are not expensive because they're somehow super hard, require some rare resource to build, or we ran out of land, or anything like that, but simply because of literal extortion, which relies on the fact that the government has an army backing it, enforcing zoning laws.´

They do this because of low birth rates giving boomers power over elections. It's so nasty and vile. The country deserves to collapse because even so called "free thinkers who go against the media" are still stupid enough to support Trump. Leave as soon as you can and pay them as little taxes as possible. Living with your parents is the right call, and btw I would consider maxing out credit cards before you leave to SEA, but that's a very radical choice as your parents will stay in America, so up to you.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not supporting immigration. But notice how we have no issues with food supply, water supply, electricity, cars, or anything else society produces due to the added population from immigration, only housing.

The housing issue is not because of immigrants. It's the extortion.

IT manager here, I only have one direct report and I've noticed he really doesn't want to talk to another team. (Team B). I'll admit they're really snippy and take what you say and twist them but it's getting frankly a little annoying he keeps using me to pass the buck on messages.

>>
>>108180067
Yeah but they're not outrageous, unaffordable prices like homes. They just rose as the fed printed extra money. Young people can afford food.

Also it doesn't make sense that population increases would be bad for the country as if we can't produce more of things.
>>
>>108180082

yeah because the jump from a $3 big mac to a $4.5 big mac isn't as big as from a $300k home to $450k home

>>
>>108180066
jfl? no the other coworkers are white but they seem to strongarm every conversation we have with them. they also do the whole gaslight but they leave their messages always insanely vague most of the time. we always have to recap in writing "as discussed we're doing x,y,z" every meeting to avoid problems but it is tiring. I can understand his issue but it's a huge problem if he can't talk to this team by himself.
>>

I'm going to stop talking about this because this thread is not about politics. Economics are a very mathematical and complicated side of politics, and can be very hard to explain or discuss and it would derail the thread that's supposed to be about tech jobs.

I disagree that the goods and services society can produce are fixed to a certain population amount and any increase in demand fucks everything up. And I also disagree that grocery prices have been increasing similarly to home prices over the last decades. I'll leave it at that.

>>108181101
Bro... UBI is a meme

Computers make easy things hard and hard things easy. Notice for example how much before AI, computers could make insanely hard maths operations in milliseconds yet could never be even close to recognizing a picture.

That means that, if AI replaces coders (which is a big assumption, it is short sighted to think it will, I will explain why later), it may still not replace most jobs or even other jobs that seem easier. In which case, no UBI for us. People will just be glad they got rid of the ugly dorks in offices and everyone will celebrate that a bunch of high IQ white males no longer have a good income.

However, here's the whitepill. AI is not advancing exponentially, that's a normie meme. It's using the same technology since 2017 when transformer neural networks for language models came out. They are refining and fine tuning the same underlying tech, there's a limit to that.

If you try to use AI for programming tasks that are not trivial, it's awful. It's been this awful since 2020. And it would be a massive leap for it to write an entire commercial codebase, which has thousands of symbols that interact with each other over hundreds of thousands of lines of code, all with different goals in mind that lead to the app working. I don't know if AI will ever be able to do that, because by design, its entire purpose is to put out text that is relevant to the input as per the patterns in the training data, which is why it has no concept of something being true or not and keeps "lying". It may never be able to by design. But if it is ever able to, tech jobs will be different but still in demand, like with every time that new tech comes out and what we used to do gets automated.

On average, Germans only call in sick for two weeks a year and as hybrid software devs you're kinda expected to do even less than that. If you're absent for a whole quarter you'll definitely lose your job in all but the biggest companies or in government positions.
>>
>>108181318

Not sure about spain, but in many countries they are not the ones who pay your salary while you are away. Seriously?
>>
>>108183358
Tech is a magical black box to tech-illiterate people. It's almost psychological, their brains just block trying to understand it. It's like the opposite of law where laymen are overconfident about their grasp of how it works and how it's enforced.
>>
>>108183340
Well, I don't think it's the whole company (it's a trillion dollar behemoth), just our local business unit in the org chart... But yes, the guy in charge of our org at that level is completely delusional. The guy above him is a bit more grounded, but also fucking nuts. Above that it's all sociopaths.
>>
>>108183358
Because you can write software to do many things that would be very, if not prohibitively, difficult to have a human do.
That leads to people who have no understanding of the underlying tech thinking you can do everything easily.
If your engineers tell you no, that disagrees with the idea you have in your head that you can do everything with the right software and that you hired the wrong engineers.
This is further complicated by the fact that the people in recruiting sometimes do hire the wrong engineers.
>>
>>108183587
and then you think that you hired the wrong engineers*
>>
>>108183390
Because the market has literally gone double-standards up the ass.
If you don't have a degree then the chances are you
>weren't smart enough
>weren't rich enough
>never had connections with others
And people who work in software or tech think they're in some big club where they're super smart and capable and not like the other losers below them, so they gatekeep people without degrees. And if that don't work? Gatekeep them out because you don't have experience in the role yet you show actual practical skills in said role and would be easier to onboard in 3 months than someone who met the bare minimum qualifications and will spend a year to be trained for less efficiency, who jumps to another company because they don't actually like the stack and just needed the experience.

Honestly, this was a problem pre-meltdown of the tech job market, it just became two times worse.

>the market will never crash, says the man in 2007
you are delusional if you think this is any different. AI coding is massively overhyped and underdelivers. The progress isn't exponential, either. It's already peaking and will only slow down. Claude 4 wasn't 2x better than 3.5, it wasn't even 50% better. And 4.5 vs 4.0 is an even smaller gap. The rate of improvement is slowing down, and these models are still barely usable for real world applications.
>>
>>108184134
No one will fix things, that's where you're wrong. The society will crash and burn before it gets better and you won't find a job in the meantime.
>>
>>108184036
We're not in the same phase, I agree, but I think the idea of the usual "we can let people go now, it'll work out" and the general lack of coherency and tenure that's arisen over the past 15 years isn't going away either.
Suits legitimately don't know what they want. Half of them see people wanting new solutions and will be okay with risks and breaking shit to make an omelet, then they'll gatekeep the fuck out of things, automate the process, hire the wrong people for a task. Other half want to have software or solutions or a pipeline that'll work 100% of the time, minimal downtime, less maintenance and then outsource it to a sweatshop or ask unrealistic shit using new technologies, then the client ends up not giving a fuck because "well, that's the best we could get".

Everyone's gone full blown apathetic from a general outlook but the hellish process of hiring/job seeking and the disconnect between people who actually work a job in the company and those who don't has never been greater. Which did happen in 2008 and years after, just for a different context.
>>108184148
That's what I'm slightly worried about, the apathy. It's not just over the one industry I'm currently in either, at least within my country.
>>
>>108182696
I'll actually try and offer you some advice if you're genuinely serious
>get an internship now, not tomorrow, now, actually get 2, 3, 6 who fucking knows get one at the very least or you threw away your degree for nothing
>drop out right now if you don't like CS, you're autistic so you probably do
>if they offer any kind of certs for free/reduced price or something, do them (interships might offer them as well)
>code shit in your spare time, this is no longer an "option", it is a requirement
>talk with staff and people in the university about who they know and who to get into contact with
I'm not saying outreach with people and network like a person without autism, go talk to your staff and shit, go talk to a professor. You're autistic, it'll work out better than anyone else.
Your career doesn't start when you graduate. It started the moment you left school for college. No one told you that.

Fellas, I think I need a bit of help at my current job. My manager does jack shit, has absolutely no idea what I'm doing, and will blindly believe whatever I tell him about myself, but honestly I'd rather just do an honest job instead of have to finesse people.

I'm struggling at my current job(boomer-era name brand tech firm) as an SDE2, because I feel like I never get assigned much of scope and at the same time most of the work in my team now is on team-specific platform dev knowledge(kubernetes, ansible, CICD, allat). I still don't know much about it and neither do my 2 other colleagues.

Sometimes I'll have a reasonably defined task and one of the seniors will do the work concurrently and entirely override my work so that I have nothing to really do on the story now, and other times I'll be assigned a task that's ambiguous and loosely defined, akin to "figure out how to add federal procurement compliant audit log retention". I'm not sure how I should approach these tasks logically wise because I have a slightly hard time with ambiguity and self starting, it's one of my weak links. I really want to get this done in a timely manner so that I'm not a useless burden.
>>
>>108185254
There is no fucking chance I get this shit. They're probably just padding the applicant/interview numbers and already know who they really want. I'm not that lucky.
>>
>>108185312
In this market? You'd have to be the best bullshitter period.
Knowing the basics will only get you maybe looked at with someone who might take you in for an internship. Internships in any tech field are hellishly competitive right now.
It's 2026. You've got till 2029. Chances are the market will be in a better situation, but who even knows. You've got 2 years, 10 months. You can become a good, hell even great programmer in that time if you sit yourself down and dedicate to it.

Do not make the mistake I did. Do not think "it'll be okay, I don't need to try for this field, its something I can do at home, there's no rush, my whole life is ahead of you."
You already started, you're burning time now. It sounds harsh, but there are people here who would tell you to drop out right now because the market is fucked or whatever AI reason they might bring up.

What do you have in mind?
Right now, I was making video game code mods. I also use claude for things like these.
I just solved 2Sum in leetcode, I thought about using a double for loop right away, and I knew I was correct when the loop variables added up to the target. Unfortunately I had to actually output it correctly and I got spoiled on how to specifically solve it since a lot of other people used the same approach.
I have like, maybe 5 leetcode easy problems solved. I have those code mods on my GitHub, but I also have projects with Claude I made for applying specific blending modes and noise filters on images that match a game I like.

Few months ago, feeling so frustrated and powerless against the ICE enforcement actions against immigrants, I have made a commitment to stand up and help.

Yes, I help immigrants every day in my work . Yes, my team and I make a difference every day overcoming obstacles and securing visas and green cards for our clients. I take many clients pro bono or almost pro bono.

I have made a commitment to do more. This morning, I have addressed a group of about 30 Ukrainian parolees at the Holy Trinity Ukrainian Catholic Church in Carnegie, Pennsylvania to answer their questions, give them hope, promise assistance.

It doesn't matter what higher ups believe fren. Do you think they like paying us well or giving us remote work? Kek. We are a bunch of high IQ white males, half of us misogynistic and racist. Everyone hates us.

It's ok with me if they believe LLM will replace us, and then they will be free from us, and those annoying and autistic white males they resent and hate, who unfairly make more money than regular extroverted normies, minorities and women, will finally be gone from their offices and face a reckoning and work a "real job" at mcd, or something. They'll just be disappointed eventually.

I've been at my current (and first) job for a bit over 3 years now and I feel like I've gotten dumber/worse at just pure cooding. Probably peaked at around year 1 after uni, at some point I was legit just able to sit down and write code and make shit work even if it took me a bit, but now it's the other way around.

I know a lot more about the frameworks and products we work with, but since my work is mostly bug fixing and maintenance/support I haven't had much chance of actually working with fresh code and it's mostly just updating shit which at this point is just chore of copying from one project and adapting to half a dozen others

If I were to sit down and write shit I absolutely can't without looking up a million things I didn't need to in the past. I want to apply to a better paying job and there's no shot I'll make it past a technical interview.
