I'm hoping things escalate, if you check things you will see such always increase number of jobs in our field, and because of its nature it is very likely we will be safe from outsiders.
I don't like my new job very much and the one I left to get a new one that was supposed to be more sane paid a lot better.

>>108484997Why would you hate a tool? Do you also hate hammers?

>>108485114They are not comparable. A hammer is a nice simple tool that has a consistent result. LLMs are (literally in the name) language models. They are made for language, they can't think or reason. So using LLMs to generate code is not a good idea. Sure, LLMs can generate syntactically correct code as a side effect, but the correctness of that code can vary. And most of the time the problem domain can be so large that you can get different results from the same prompt and context.

This is just extending the scope of the autocomplete.I will completely agree that pointing an LLM on a problem and saying "think about this and find a solution" is borderline retarded but LLMs are *literally* optimised to death for advanced code generation. You get very solid consistency for traditional patterns because that's where the biggest certainty within the LLM statistical inference lies.

Look, if they're like 150 IQ, were top 0.001% in math in a country with 1 billion people, did all their schooling in english, then fine. I don't care about those. But how the fuck am I working with jeets who flat out do not speak english. Literally they cannot get through a single sentence without a glaring error. EVEN WITH NEPOTISM the fuck did they get hired...surely there was some other jeet who had them beat.

>shake the owners handI know it's a meme atp but it's depressing how far removed everyone over 40 is in every other sector. Most normgroids at that age have already figured their lives out and have been working at the same company for a decade or more, completely removed from the hell that is modern job searching. They have no clue how painful the multi round interview process is, or how opaque, or how clueless and useless all the people you meet along the way are.>wow son, you didn't get the job at (x) company? did you ask for feedback?>dad I got an automated rejection message from their system, all 3 of the dudes I interviewed with had no clue what I would be doing on the job and the hiring decisions are made by a council of HR roasties I've never spoken to
how much do you worry about staying in the same niche with respect to future jobs?i managed to get into a pretty cool ML job doing computer vision stuff in manufacturing, right out of college. the problem is my gf got a job across the country and i want to live with her. it's pretty fuckin hard to find jobs similar to what i'm doing now. i worry if i switch to some more general software engineering role, i'll basically never have the opportunity to do ML shit like i'm doing now, because so many of the jobs are looking for people with graduate degrees or otherwise lots of experience in it.

>>108485879"Learning" AI is like learning how to make the slot machine pay out every time
>>108490559Sounds like an amazing skill to have.
if you treat AI like essentially an dictionary for stackoverflow it's halfway decent, especially with stuff you don't quite know and lack the vocabulary to get search engine hits for (so for junior retards), but that's about ityou just gotta figure out the implementation details yourself or else you won't even know how your own system works, which matters because the AI doesn't either
>>108490582And by that I meant that it relies on insane levels of confirmation bias because it's not an actual skill you can have, by design, because the slot machine doesn't pay our every time unless it's broken

>>108490601Nuh uh
>>108486394This was already the case before AI. There's a lot of drag and drop tools around like retool/klipfolio which dumb PMs can use to make their shitty dashboards like it was lego. Our product team is already largely using those and they almost killed our prod postgres because I shit you not they run 1h+ long queries. >>108490798I feel like the entire world's worth of industries is basically being skill laddered up. Meaning that entry level now requires mid level skills to get hired for the same amount of pay. Even my new hires are more competitive/educated at the level they are at compared to 10 years ago. Our new batch of Nepo hires have more formal education in IT from their high schools than we ever had a chance in schooling ever. That was back when most of my generation learned PC's through Torrents/Game Modifications and fucking around with Linux OS's.

It happened so quickly. I had the day off today, but I decided to check my work email just in case. A meeting created and named “FY Plans” was added to my calendar. Immediately I knew that it was not going to be good news. They said the company financials were not good. Which is bull crap. I had seen the numbers and they were good. But they still decided to lay off me and 20 others. I had an above average performance review for the last fiscal year. I was coming into the office as they mandated. I had survived a previous round of layoffs in 2024. I should have seen this coming since April is the end of our fiscal year.I’m at a loss. I was working as a full-stack engineer for embedded products. 3+ YOE. I have my BS in CS and halfway done with my MSCS (which they were paying). In an industry that I thought was relatively stable. We were building real and useful products. But that was naive of me.I have about 2+ years of savings to be good on my own. I am just dreading the job search now. Having to potentially commute hours of where I’m currently living. But I’m at least grateful to live near a big city. And the support of my family and boyfriend.I am receiving severance and the details are yet to be worked out. I’m most concerned for my health insurance, most of all. I’ve heard COBRA is wildly expensive, ugh.I’m hoping I can pivot to some kind of role that will be higher paying and more stable. Does anyone know if LeetCode is still relevant? Haha. I should’ve been grinding that instead of pouring my heart and soul into grad school. I need all the advice I can get.
