Thanks for the threads! Don't worry, take your time
I think we should recommend some books later, I understand this is a slow thread since it's a bit niche topic around here. Hell, I'm here only because of a college project, but still it's pleasant to have something like this around.

that looks very cool, I always stuck with digital and water color so I never tried it but it looks like you could make some really cool effects with it, especially when paired with a light strategically placed.
For example could give the impression of clouds in drawing horizontal lines, using just the color of the sky and the light shining on the paint ridges to create the illusion.

Nature book anon here
I talked with some publishers and they liked my project and want to publish it. It's a small company and basically they recognized a hummingbird species endemic to their region and fell in love with it
So with some government funding, some tweaking here and there, 12 extra pages and I can finally publish my very own book

I think I will add more birds and butterflies since I think that's what readers like the most
Maybe some few mammals and a frog, just because

---Fairy book update---

I talked with my editor, we signed a contract and now the project is official
I won't be able to post more images tho, but it's cool!

He needs to cut some content and change the focus of the book a bit so it's more fitting with his catalogue, the market and people's interests
>>

>>

Thanks guys

Also, as I was talking to him and signing the contract, I was carrying my suitcase full of the unsold merch I sell at cons.

He was curious to see my personal work and loved my OCs, he asked me if they had backstory or something we could make into a comic.

It's nice to hear that from a professional, but also it's frustrating since I like drawing my OCs more than anything. Sure, this project is something I like doing too, but drawing for myself nurtures my soul and It's fun to design characters for the sake of it.

I always stepped aside from those projects since people on cons only want to buy fanart and teachers find anime/cartoons disgusting, so I tried with a more traditional approach for this project. Only to discover, what I like was viable all along.

But anyways, I wouldn't made it so far without the traditional approach so I guess it was the only way. And my contract expires in 5 years, so I can surely work with my OCs in the future.

Did a bunch of water studies this year, I will post all of the completed (mostly) ones, oldest to most recent.

Mountains are hard. I don't know if i should be taking on the mindset of grass (or water as I've learned my approach is similar), "I can't draw every single detail/blade of grass. With brush techniques (different brushes) I will achieve sexy mountain." or if I should be trying to draw as accurately as possible

Damn I really like these. You can also see the influence from your experience with watercolor in your digital work.
The way you mix colors and those confident brushstrokes are really appealing. As someone who's mainly done drawing and digital painting I would like to see you push those shapes a little bit more maybe. Like the volume of the clouds, the reflections of the water, the separation between ground and the horrizon. But these are of course personal preferences.
Wish you the best of luck and hope you keep having fun with it.

How does one get into drawing backgrounds/scenery?
Do I really have to learn hardcore perspective or would my "it looks good 'nuff" perspective knowledge suffice?

I'm getting mindbroken by plants. I have no idea how to break them down in a way that I can simplify, understand, and compose.

For example, how would you go about painting this without getting bogged down in the details?
>>
>>7159144
You start with green.

No problem!
Thumbnail looks good so then it's just the detailing work from there on, probably best to use some brushes specific for foilage.

Kind of. I was thinking of harsh midday sunlight from the upper left, maybe with a slight breeze.

You are using a round brush for a pointy leaved plant. I suggest sharpening the silhouette or trying another brush.

For whatever help it might be worth, this is my brute force method of learning to do clouds
Always have a reference and try to paint what you SEE, never-ever wing it without refence
Big tall puffy clouds with contrast are good to start with
Literally color pick from pictures of clouds to learn and see what colors are needed, pick out like 4 or 5 colors, make diagonal lines of puff balls and crescent moons and look at 'animie art sky/clouds' type stuff and copy how they use just a few colors to make nice clouds and integrate it into whatever style you're doing, the above is my attempt with reference of a picture I took

Try a bunch of different brushes with varying brush opacities, use blend, smudge, and blur tools - just throw everything at the wall until you have SOMETHING resembling the contrast and shapes of the 'simple' anime clouds, and work from there....

I think the right; the white stripe on the left looks crooked, and thus it seems too much of the right side of the face is seen when it should be more hidden behind the stripe like on the right
