-TRUE UP 2024 edition-

This is a thread for those who want to go through dynamic sketching as a group in an effort to improve drawing skills starting from the very fundamentals. Here we share the tedious grind, crit and encourage each others.
Please specify the week you're on and if it's dynamic sketching 1 or 2 when posting your work.

>What's Dynamic Sketching?
A class by Peter Han that focus on improving draftsmanship, construction and design. It is intended for beginners, but the second class can be useful even for /int/. It covers a wide variety of subjects, but not figure drawing.

>Where to get it?
magnet:?xt=urn:btih:0aebc0f02e6c179b62e04c69af3e5adee3abee12&dn=IC-STUDY

\Course\Form and Construction\

>Peter Han says to get a lot of material, are they needed?
Your choice. Honestly, just draw. Use what you have. But if you want, you can get it. You can do it digitally, but try to refrain from using ctrl+z and other features. At the end of the day though, do what you want. As long as you put the work you're gonna see progress.

>I'm /int/ (as if, pyw faggot), should I bother?
If you want to expand your range of subjects, I recommend it. It also covers a lot of fundies that doesn't hurt to revisit. I suggest you start with DS2 though.

>SCHEDULE
>DS1
week 1: Lines and ellipses
week 2: Organic forms and textures
week 3: Perspective, basic of light
week 4: Form intersections
week 5: (Optional) Materials: markers, paint, pencils, etc.
week 6: Plants
week 7: Redesign
week 8: Preview of DS2: military vehicles
>DS2
week 1: Recap of DS1
week 2: Insects
week 3: Bones
week 4: Animals
week 5: Cars
week 6: Military vehicles
week 7: Planes
week 8: Reworking, Portfolio, New redesigns
*every week of DS2 include a redesign homework

Mess up a lot, get that mileage in, but most importantly pyw

Shit, posted without picture.
Anyway, control of ellipse is terribly hard but doing the motions every day improves the muscle memory for it. I'm still also experimenting on my grip since I get sore pretty fast, so sometimes lines goes to shit but it doesn't matter. I'm trying stuff up

Been drawing as a hobby for a few years but I need to improve my line confidence. Doing it digitally in Photoshop. What settings would you recommend?
Should I use a toned background? recommended canvas size? Zoom %, stay the same, zoom in and out for different arm movements? what about the brush and brush size? pressure size?
Tried this:
>A4 canvas @ 300ppcm (8910x6300pixels)
>White background, black foreground color.
>Drawing at Zoom 12.5%, 16.67%, 25%.
>Hard round brush
>Hard round brush with pressure size
>Hard round pencil tool (no anti-aliasing)
>Hard round pencil tool with pressure size
No smoothing. No undo, except a couples of times when I did it out of habit. Forgot about the going over the same line thing.
Canvas was a bit laggy, too big.

I know it's autistic and doesn't matter that much, just curious what you guys would recommend.
>>
>>7196009
I remember the early lessons were nice for a /beg/ to get some confidence with shapes and start to feel the form, but very quickly becomes "rest of the fucking owl" and jumps into tanks and shit.

>>7196552
shit like canvas size doesn't matter much, but jesus dude, get a smaller brush size. Regardless of zoom level, you want your lines to be about the size they'd be if you had used a pencil on your screen, not a toddler's crayon.

I see what you mean, how's this?
1080x1920 pixel canvas
100% zoom.
5px, 3px, 4px pixel brush. Any smaller and I can hardly see the brush cursor.
Lines kinda thick from going over them.
>>
>>7196573
retard just skip digital for now and just use an ol regular pen and paper.

>>7196575
I'm specifically trying to improve my digital skills, doing these exercises traditionally didn't really help.
>>
>>7196586
That's a good thickness, where you can actually tell which strokes overlap and which don't, and exactly where they begin and end.
>>
>>7196016
this side of things is genuinely pointless, but his approach to drawing things 2d and gaining an understanding of proportion and shape is good before going into something

>>7196586
oops I lied, that was a 2px brush. these were 1px. but 2px felt better. The waves and arcs are a lot harder. How do you decide what type of wave to do? Are straight lines for guides ok? Some got very messy, need to slow down. Enough practice for today, time to draw for fun. My bad if it's too spammy.

>>7196597
Yeah I agree, being able to see each line helps.
>>
>>7196552
Use toned canvas when we get into highlights for textures. Until then doesnt matter. I'd say just a hard round and 1-2px. Zoom in or out changes nothing for this exercise, you'll want to practice just like on paper: about 2 inch (on the tablet), half the tablet, full length
>>
>>7196564
He lays all the foundation of construction needed. After that its just observation and applying the basic forms to it. Draw the rest of the fucking tank
>>
>>7196599
Not pointless to me who has barely any control over my pen. This is just to build confidence and muscle memory. If you've been drawing for years I can see it being useless, but for someone who never draw and pick a pencil as if for writing, this is good. It practices full arm movement
>>
>>7196604
For digital I would personally do 1 perfectly straight line and practice going over it as best as you can. Also I wouldnt hesitate to rotate the canvas as I see fit. Basically try to practice the movement you will use for real drawings
>>
>>7196211

I'm pretty /int/ at this point I think, but my weakest areas are still perspective and form. Didn't know this was called Dynamic Sketching, to me it's just "Draw a box" or "Scott Robertson How to draw" which I feel covers the same steps? Either way I did some of these practices years ago and stopped, picking them back up again because I'm tired of being as mid as I currently am with perspective, form and subsequently construction.

Tend to try to fill half a 7k x 7k 600dpi canvas with lines drawn over 8-9 times and a bit of ellispes and circles in there for good measure, then 1point perspective on the left side (Very loose adherence to the scheduling kinda at the point where I feel I understand a few things of what I need and should just try to tackle them)

I Try to keep my pen small so I can see more inaccuracies and work with 0 stab

Oh no dude trust I KNOW they're dog shit. Weakest area is again perspective and form. It doesn't stop me from drawing what I need to to get the job done, but it def holds me back from being better than I am at the moment.

Type of a guy who will make a good enough picture for the normies to eat, but anyone with a critical enough eye could easily see the problem areas ya dig? Don't get much in the way of studious practices, but I do draw a lot if
you catch my drift.

DAB is basically a free, autistic version of Dynamic Sketching.

If you’re prebeg, do DAB. If you need intensive, baby-step handholding that treats you like a retarded toddler, do DAB. If you need a lot of explicit repetition and grinding, do DAB. If you can’t access a dynamic sketching course, do DAB.

If you’ve already done Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain or Eviston’s or Proko’s beg course, then you can do Dynamic Sketching. If you’re around int level, do Dynamic Sketching over DAB for sure. It’s a bit more advanced, less handholdy, and isn’t as grindy. It’s not as detailed and gradual as DAB, and assumes a little bit of prior knowledge and experience. DAB basically assumes you literally know almost nothing about drawing and have zero experience.

well consider me a fresh convert

for I in my entire life of drawing could never fathom how to achieve that SNAP! I felt all good digital artworks had. Digital art and hood graffiti scrawl that always had a looseness and just synchronicity in line.

Stabilizer would kill the soul in my lines if i used them, but also pointless if i didn't just ramp it to 100%. No stabilizer was awful for different reasons. Someone linked me to this first video, about LAWE (line arcs waves ellipses) exercises and it's like *click*
That and switching to a screenless tablet finally, well screenless "mode" of my cintiq 16 hooked up to my USB hooked up to macbook air but instead of connecting the video part, i just hooked up a different hdmi to a bigger TV.
I've been through it all, wacom bamboo -> samsung galaxy tab s4 -> CSP cintiq 16 WITH A FUCKING EXTERNAL BATTERY-> procreate ipad pro 11 inch -> ipad pro 12.5 inch art studio pro -> cintiq 16 but screenless. (save ipad for portable adventures)

this is peak digital art making, surely. I have never been able to sketch digitally without tracing a trad piece, and i just feel like doing exercises work the basic muscles i never used much during drawing. i have seen the light.

I understand your point, and appreciate the vote of confidence. Whichever learning modality best suits you probably has to do with personality type. I think there is also value in doing it this way.
>>7226062
That’s a bit like saying Charles Hu’s course is a ripoff of Peter Han’s course. It’s all Dynamic Sketching. I do genuinely think DAB is better than DS for begs. For example, on the intersecting forms, DS does a demo and tells you “draw intersecting forms. It’s hard. Just visualize how they go together. Do four pages.” Where DAB explains how it’s actually done. He explains that the intersection is a contour line that’s shared by both forms. It’s a line that travels along the surface plane of Form A and the surface plane of Form B simultaneously. Then he explains how to find it. It doesn’t assume prior knowledge at all, which is very useful for beginners. It’s a little autistic in its grindiness, but that can be adjusted by the person doing it. How well a teacher draws matters much less than how well he teaches.

In my opinion, the spirit of this general includes DrawABox as well as all the different versions of Dynamic Sketching, regardless of who teaches them. It’s all aiming at the same thing and it’s all roughly based on the same curriculum, just different people like different teaching styles.

>That’s a bit like saying Charles Hu’s course is a ripoff of Peter Han’s course. It’s all Dynamic Sketching.
No. He literally admits his course is a ripoff of peter han.
>Though I'm the one who's written the lessons (based on what I learned from Peter Han's Dynamic Sketching course at Concept Design Academy)
https://drawabox.com/about
Just learn it from the actual person instead of this streetshitter who has not even posted work for the past two years.
>>
>>7227943
Yeah, I know. But Peter Han didn’t invent the Dynamic Sketching approach/course/curriculum either. It was created by Norman Schureman at Art Center. Then Peter Han learned it from him and took over teaching it at Art center, and then Charles Hu teaches it now. There’s a bunch of different takes on the Dynamic Sketching approach, with a bunch of different courses on it from Han and Hu to CGMA and DrawABox. BTW, the original dude, Norman, got shot and killed at a party in 2010.

Anyway, my point was just that DAB is super handholdy (but autistic) and Dynamic Sketching isn’t, so (at least) the first few lessons of DAB might actually be better for a raw wriggling beg, fresh out of Drawing On The Right Side of the Brain or Keys to Drawing — and maybe even after Eviston’s or Proko’s beg course. And also I’m pointing out that, since it’s all traced back to/based around the OG DS curriculum where you learn line control and construction and then draw a bunch of stuff, DAB enjoyers should be welcome ITT.

For context, I did up til like lesson 3 of DAB when I first started out, and now I’ve done to halfway through week 3 of Charles Hu’s NMA course. I’ve also watched the first few weeks of Peter Han’s old DS course.

How long and how often do I have to be doing these pen control exercises (lines, circles, ellipses, zig-zags, etc.)? I don't mind doing them every day, if I have anything it's time, but I don't want to get beg-trapped, the other day I did like 30 pages of this and felt kinda wiped for actually practicing anything else.

Did this warm-up sheet everyday for 2 months or so. Saw decent progress in the first two weeks, a bit more in the next two, but in the 2nd month I didn't see much improvement. 'Diminishing returns' as they call it. These types of exercises are pretty boring and mindless so it's easy to half-ass them. Once you've got the basic hand-eye coordination skills down it gets increasingly harder to improve. Some guys like Jeff Watts still warm-up before every session. A 10-20 minute warm-up won't hurt, as long as you don't hate it. 30 pages sounds like a huge amount. It's easy to go hard at the start but then your brain associates drawing with a huge amount of effort. It will make you desperately try to avoid drawing and you'll find any excuse to procrastinate, so don't go too crazy. Exercises like these are a bit different than the real thing, you'll improve faster when you have to make lines in art pieces you actually care about.
>>
>>7232629
Thanks a bunch anon, I was looking for something like this.

In week 1 Peter Han says that the minimum for his class is six pages and I counted lines, arcs, waves, ellipses, basic forms and that's how I got to 30 pages... I'm probably autistic. I didn't even hate it or anything, with some music on in the background it was actually really chill, but I did end up too wiped out to actually draw anything so I figured that couldn't be right since it's supposed to be warming up.

It was a bit confusing how Peter phrased it and his demonstration on paper was on one page to save time too. Found a good example on ArtStation: https://www.artstation.com/artwork/v21VaY

From my notes I interpreted what he said as:
>3 pages of lines, arcs, waves (all on one page). (pic related are on separate pages)
>3 pages of ellipses.
>For 6 pages in total.
>Minimum is 6 pages. Minimum is never good enough, push harder.
So it's fine if you did more, but yeah that amount would make anyone wiped out. I listen to music too, helps me focus and get in the zone.

For shading so far I've just gone through the first part of Steve Huston's book (CHAPTER 5 specifically for light and shadow) and watched various YouTube videos.
These are the best videos I've seen that explain and demonstrate the 'anatomy of light':
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DQ5QF0q4QqQ
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qa40uNZHFdI
https://youtu.be/bIOWs69FPmc?list=PLI-9-SuuU7GE-swHeTgmnvmNb2cChOj_x&t=45
Specifically, learning about how light falls off helped me a lot. Dorian's video/site explains it well.
https://youtu.be/6vapw6n6FyU?t=37
https://www.dorian-iten.com/shading-mistakes/
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6vapw6n6FyU
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C_tzYZXgiP8

As for putting it in practice, clearly separating the light and shadow is the most important part. Simplifying things down into shapes makes things more clear and is easier to draw. This whole playlist is very good.
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLLmXZMqb_9sbNLM83NrM005vRQHw1yTKn
Next is soft edges to turn the form. Try out different tools in your medium of choice to get soft edges and see which workflow you like.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bcFfMytTWak
These two steps, two values to separate light and shadow and then a gradation to round the corners, does 80% of the work.
Ahmed Aldoori's quick paint-overs in his student critiques show how quickly and simply you can get the base 3D forms to look convincingly realistic.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6zZXsJ9O1sU
These longer demonstrations I found really helpful too.

Yeah it looks like you’re gonna download it, but it takes you to where you can stream it.
>From the OCC page, you click on the expanding menu that says “watch online or download for free”
>it expands a menu of the different videos/files.
>You click on the one you want.
>It takes you to a mediafile.cc page that has the options for a “slow download” or a “fast instant download.”
>Click on “slow download” and wait 60 seconds.
>It will change to a button that says “Download/view now.”
>Click it and it’ll take you to a video player where you can stream the video.
>On the right side of the page there will also be a little blue “download” button that you can click on to download the video while you stream it.
For me, it downloads in less than the time it takes to watch the video on the stream, so you might be able to go through and download each video in the background while you stream it. You can only watch/download one file at a time and there might be a cooldown period of like 2 minutes between downloads, but watching the video/waiting for the download will probably take up that cooldown period by the time you move on to the next video.
Also, if you’ve already done two full dynamic sketching courses, you may not need to do Charles Hu’s.

>>7238538
Jung Gi, or Sorie? I think KJG is better in some ways and Peter Han is better in others. I think Han’s drawings are more aesthetically beautiful and refined illustrations than KJG, but KJG could draw more cool random funhouse shit. If I had to choose which one I’d rather draw like, I’d probably choose KJG. If I had to choose one to hang on my wall and look at, I’d probably choose Han.

Im on the same boat as you, I need to draw elipses good becasue I like to draw vehicles as posted here >>7235132
but yeah the other anon is right. Its a good warm up practice but I wouldnt spend that much time on it unless you really know what your getting out of it.
Me, I need to draw ellipses, such as tires and cylinders etc. Boxes and lines, so I need pretty good line control when it comes to moving to the pen after i box in with a marker.
But I would do more interesting exercises like putting ellipses with perspective in mind.
Untimely drawing what you like and want will get you better at drawing what you like, not drawing ellipses. So for me, its going to be a warm up exercise, but nothing more.

If you want a beginner-friendly version of dynamic sketching, DrawABox is it. Probably just going through the first couple of lessons will be all you need to get up to speed enough to switch to Dynamic Sketching. You could also just keep right on doing DAB.

If you’re brand spanking new to art and have never done any drawing before, you could also do Betty Edwards’s book Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, or do Proko or Eviston’s beginner course. That will teach you to draw what you ACTUALLY SEE and not what you *think* you see.
Here’s my basic, beg-tier understanding of learning how to draw stuff:
>Step zero of art is learning how to see. Nothing else can happen until you learn to see properly. Otherwise, you’re going in blind.
>Step one of art is being able to draw what you see
>Step two is being able to construct what you see
>Step 3 is drawing/constructing enough that you internalize a 3D model of whatever subjects you’re studying and can draw them from imagination/memory
Betty Edwards and Eviston cover step 0 and step 1, Proko might cover from step 0 to step 2. Dynamic Sketching and DrawABox cover step 2 and 3.

Idk if Proko or Eviston teach constructive drawing or just observation like Betty Edwards’s book. But once you know how to see, you can learn how to construct. DrawABox is great for that, and so is the Vilppu Drawing Manual and Vilppu’s Renaissance Figure Drawing course. Honestly, after learning accurate observational drawing, you can probably download the concept of construction into your head by just watching a quick YouTube tutorial to get the gist of it, and you can probably jump into DS from there. Something like https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=6T_-DiAzYBc&pp=ygUbNyBzdGVwcyB0byBkcmF3aW5nIGFueXRoaW5n

Or maybe just give DS a shot anyway and see if it’s actually beyond your depth or not. Worst case scenario, you do DAB or something else and then come back to it.
>>
>>7239582
Nta but, where's the better place to download DS?
I checked out Online courses club but i really don't want to spend hours downloading and one anon said the one in the magnet is choppy.
>>
>>7239605
Idk, I got it from online courses club. The videos downloaded reasonably fast for me, each one took less time to download than it took to stream, so you could watch them while they download, then draw and download them in the background. Or have them download in the background while you fap or watch YouTube or do other stuff. You can also just stream them from OCC without downloading them at all.

Slow down and be more conscious of the lines you’re going over. The point is to build muscle memory and be confident and intentional with your lines, to have control. Here’s how I can tell you’re not quite doing that:

Your lines don’t all start at the same point. It’s normal for your retraced lines to end all squirrely, but they should all start at the same point as the first line. Most of your lines start in the same general area instead of right on top of the line you’re supposed to retrace. Also, remember to rotate your canvas/tablet/paper so your arm can work in a natural range of motion. You might try doing one more page of lines and curves to test out my advice and see if it works for you, but otherwise just move forward.

Aside from the starting point of the lines, these look fine desu. It’s normal for the exercises to look ugly. As long as you’re drawing/sketching with confident, intentional marks, it’s fine. That should be your intention from the get-go, even tho it’ll take practice and mileage to actually pull off.
>>7246272
>was able to effortlessly do circles with the overhand grip this shit does actually work.
Cool, isn’t it?
>How many days of week one do i need to do in order to go into week two?
Doesn’t matter how many “days” as long as you do the exercises. Like if it’s 4 pages of the exercise or 8 pages of drawing a given subject, you can do them in however many days.
>Can i do other books while i do this one?
Yes, of course! If you’re a complete beginner, it may be better to do enough of those that you can see properly before you add in dynamic sketching. (see >>7239582) Also, DAB is dynamic sketching only beginner-friendly. You can do a few lessons of DAB and then jump into DS.
>How should i find subjects or things to draw in my non lesson drawings?
Idk, draw what looks cool and what you want to draw like. Jojo is based
