I see a lot of developed skills here. your mark making is the biggest bottleneck. check out steve huston gesture videos his goal is gesture+structure and staying characterful/true to the figure. His book is fantastic and combined with his free videos is so helpful. Notice how all his shapes taper, and how they mirror the curvature of the solid 90% of the time, i.e. if one side is convex, the other is concave.

I think your shadow shapes are the biggest problem, I don't understand the lighting, shouldn't the under breasts be in shadow for example?
Most pros I like group all shadows into a single continuous shape instead of pockets of shadow, it helps guide the eye through the figure and also gives it volume.

For cel shading, I like pixel art and 80/90 anime.

I love velma's right leg decision

>>7231176

Talent lies not in how beautifully you draw, but in how far you can advance, this is best demonstrated in mathematics and other sciences where a special type of thinking is needed, the implementation of formulas and laws in tasks and the ability to find a way out if the original formula is not enough, with drawing as well, just here you see crappy drawn cubes in perspective and curved shapes, but in mathematics you have an unsolved problem.

Hey guys, thought this might be interesting. I basically went on art hiatus from early March to just recently, and my figure drawing has degenerated in that time. I thought it might be interesting to see, and serve as a cautionary tale.
The figures at the top are from early March, then the figures at the bottom are from the past couple days. Big decline! At least to my eyes.

Jeff Watts pointed out that art gains are hard to get and easy to lose, but they’re also easy to maintain with even just a little bit of drawing every once in a while. When things (or you) are all fucked up, just do a quick little sketch or study now and then to keep your gains. Don’t be like me! Don’t stop drawing!

You mean, the middle of the inner elbow thingy? Will do for sure, even on my arm I could see there's a nice shape from this bulgy upper arm muscle and lower, but I gave up after a couple attempts to get it right. Unfortunately, anatomy is something that will come with time.

Was this elbow the first thing that caught your eye in terms of what's wrong, or are you simply bringing out low-hanging fruits for improvement ideas? I think i screwed up entire perspective and body feels very, uh, deflated of sorts to me, but I'm not sure if I'm not hyperfocusing on it.

Good to know, I can notice the head perspective issue now. Ill go look at some references, thanks
>>
>>7231539
I prefer red one, but if you want to hear the difference, I feel like left girl is just kinda focused and involved while right one is reading the book in "20 hours without sleep, exam in 30min" manner. You drew eyes closer to an eyelid and made lower eyelid less pronounced, so she just feels kinda nice and pleasant, right side girl got eye iris completely separated from eyelid, lower eyelid is very strong and feels like dark circles under eyes, clearly a little bit less than sane. Right side also got one eye significantly larger than the other, this is good for expressing insanity.

or you simply mean that you screwed up eye iris shape and positioning on her left eye, that could also be what you're looking for. She's not looking exactly at the book, though it takes a moment to notice that, but then again right side girl has a thousand yard stare so she's hardly any better

As an utter beg, I'm usually starting up with a line for an eye pupil, then I make sure it works, then I draw the rest of the eye once I'm more or less convinced that position is right, line eye serves as a point of reference. But one way or another, it gets better with time, I remember struggling with that a lot and then it kinda went away naturally, so don't worry about it too much.

I'm doing copies as practice but I don't feel like I am learning much from them. I am copying the linework mostly which I guess is good for developing observational skill and line quality, but I am not learning much on the construction and anatomy front, because I am copying a completed piece and not its constituent parts or how it's built up. It's like trying to learn a cake recipe by tasting the finished product, I don't know how many eggs go in or what heat to bake it in. Any advice for a line of attack for this, or should I just learn anatomy and construction separately?

>>
>>7231773
okay so, i have no idea what you just said in that sentence so im gonna break it down for you. **if copying is tracing then stop. it wont get you anywhere. ** these are basics.

look for shapes in drawings. notice how things like the head are made of many shapes, draw them out and put them together.

referencing art is very good, use the last tip and look for stuff. after you map out the shapes/sketch, you can begin lineart.

lineart. you suck at lineart.. how do you improve? easy. practice drawing different lines. sit yourself down with a paper and pencil, and try drawing different shapes. circles are the most prominent and important, you gotta be consistent **unless you have an amazing visual ability which i assume you dont.

coloring. this one is hard to explain because im naturally inclined to working well with colors. learn color theory. other colors look different together when placed inside/ different colors. theres more to learn about it anyway.

composition is very important for a lot of drawings, most of you like porn, so this wont matter a lot so go google it if you care.

formless things like hair. how am i gonna find a shape in this? think about the volume and the hair accumulated. if its tied up, it has a point where all of it is jumbled together. the looser is is, the less of a silhouette it will have sticking to the head, and because of gravity will be lower, low pigtails would rest on your shoulders for example

shading and highlights, girls who do makeup will know this. i assume you want an anime style, if not go ask your sister or mom where she puts her highlighter and thats where the light will be shaped and placed the most. as for shading, its better to get a reference for the lighting. **colors go in hand with shading, never use black it looks bad. find a good reference with the pose and lighting you want or use one of those anatomy figure posing sites to do it. some of them have lighting options.

Copying as in having it on one side and drawing it on the right. Copying by eye. I'm not tracing, or else I would've called it tracing.

ohh, I gave you "advice" in that thread, good on you for noticing something wasn't working and trying to adjust, many people here can't do that.

Something I didn't say in my later post because I didn't want to sound haughty, but now that you're starting to question your current plan of action, it might be worth exploring. Those 2 refs you are using are bad (not as a product if they sell, they sell, but as a study subject) I think you will only gain bad symbols from those. Theres a reason people tend to study the same people because they abstracted ideas so succinctly and readable that it became the most efficient way to get the general idea of X (portraits, hands, colors, shapes, etc).

Its okay if you don't want to do the masters but find better art works, there is incredible work in coom art both western and eastern Red Light, Isao, Izayoi seishin, etc.

I wouldn't focus on anatomy yet, invest in composition, value and form and mark making and drawing stuff will be better ROI IMO. >>7231840 perfect example of what I mean.

>>7231840
My favorite work in this thread so far, I find hard to follow the speech bubbles
>>
>>7231853
Thanks for the advice.
I am /beg/ obviously, so I don't really have an eye for what are good or bad references. I copied art I saved because I liked it, hearing that doing so is a good source of motivation for art practice. That, and feeling that trying to learn from art that is too advanced would have me trip up harder than if the art is made of simpler elements.

>Red Light, Isao, Izayoi seishin
I googled these terms and found nothing conclusive, sorry.

You advise against targeting anatomy currently, but my current goal in art is to draw characters and I don't really want to abandon that. Unless you mean more advanced anatomy, so stuff like building simplified mannequins in correct proportions and drawing body parts out of simple forms wouldn't count there?
>>
>>7231799
Very very nice
>>
I was told that this is still beg. Maybe low int for style. I think I need to sharpen the colors in her hair and work on straighter lines. What else can I work on? What do I do with the bow? I'm not good with advice unless it's like step by step.. so be extra detailed :)

Its part of development, I too have saved work that I like only to look at it now and think "what was I thinking if I want to learn X, Y's work would be way better to study" or "the lighting in this picture is awful and I'm not in the level to make it work".

>I googled these terms and found nothing conclusive, sorry.
These are H artists, since I thought that was the topic you were after.

>You advise against targeting anatomy currently,
because they end up hyperfixating in muscles or mannequinzation that doesnt make sense. I would go copy better work (that you like ofc), improve line work and learn to draw cylinders and cubes loosely, not looking for precision but good enough for them to be readable in space.

His feedback and critique isn’t worth anything anyway. Very often it’s like he’s just regurgitating something he’s heard because it often times doesn’t even apply to the piece he’s giving feedback on so don’t even worry about it. He also “kneels” too often at shitty work.

Adjusted the curves. Basically upped the reds on the more bright colors and nerfed them on the more dark zones. I ded the inverse for the blues. too much detail on the mouth and nose look at your ref carefully see how fewer lines communicate much more information its more readable. Also pay attention to the height to width ratio of the face, yours feels a bit thinner, also your female faces have male jaws. I honestly dislike the Loomis "construction", I prefer the Steve Huston approach.

>>7232048
Awesome really good, something I see a ton of pros do is that they link and branch their shadow shapes into a single one, it makes it easy for the eye to travel over the piece, maybe its worth exploring, a test.

Am I doing extra work for line art?
When I draw I separate layers for body parts, then use a layer mask to remove covered areas.
One of my drawings the legs covered 70% of the torso, but I still drew the entire torso line art, then erased the covered areas with layer mask at the final stage.
>>
>>7232143
I usually use 3 layers, face, hair and everything else.

before you read these, know that i am worse than you lol, you look really /int/ to me .
i think her right arm is broken out of socket, like its too far down from her shoulders. another thing is that staff she's holding looks really flat where its connecting to the glaive, which partially is due to shading I think, but also because i think we should be able to see the connection/bottom of the blade.
for a nitpicking point, i think her hands are maybe too manly, but that may just be me
i tried to do a redline to illustrate what im trying to say about the arm and the pole, but this may end up being a learning experience for me on anatomy or something.
>>
>>7232217
Nah its good. With the staff you are 100% right. Something bothered me but my brain was fried so I just said screw it it ends there.
Regarding the arm, originally it was a bit higher, but that felt wrong to me since the arm should reach more or less the middle of the thigh. She's a ghost so she doesn't has thighs lol, but I placed it to more or less reach there. That made more sense to me since the exaggerated perspective and large breasts would block her shoulder from the pov, but I knew more or less where the arm should reach. Maybe the angle gives off the wrong impression, and the arm should have been placed more vertically, but that was my thought process.
>Manly hands

I think I'm heading towards a path of no return
>>7232362
I watched mogoon, chyan and okku
they are available on cgpeers
but I confess they didn't help much
It's more like a class on how to enter a professional career than learning how to draw, besides the captions are horrible
The videos are separated into classes of around two hours, but obviously you can't teach much anatomy in 2 hours, for example, so it ends up being very superficial
the female instructor(okku) seemed to be better than mogoon and chyan
now if they are worth 200 bucks, hell now
also, nice work, I saw it on pixiv

Did a quick drawover, not perfect but maybe closer to the intended proportion. Lower head is big as you said. I think in general be mindful of heads orientation in 3d space, how the face conforms to the direction of the head, that the neck attaches in the right place under the skull. Sorry if the advice is a bit generic. I only felt the need to write something because you asked for feedback. I think the body is good.

You have a gift anon, art and beauty go hand in hand, becoming a master craftsman can be learnt. But, infusing life drive and desire just through a picture shown at the eyes of others, that's the highest form of magic and power anon. You have the power to create lust, to invoke and provoke the creation of life. You're the ultimate warlock, you do real magic. When the nukes fly up in the sky and the lights go off in this world, and the machines stop working, and the darkness falls, and the humanity scream in the black night, and rivers of salty disheartened human tears flood the barren lands, you will rise... above, on a stone wall with just a piece of charcoal, you will draw a goddess so beautiful that the savage post apocalyptic crowd will look at her enchanted, their blood will boil, absolute bliss and happiness will flood their bodies and they will start a new cycle of life creation. You yield that ancient power, since the beginning of times to this day, in your dna that ancient mystery gnosis has been kept alive. Be well anon, the humankind will need you soon.

Pretty brand new to art. Have picked up drawing over and over constantly as a kid and now as an adult. Can never seem to get good at it, even when I invested hours of drawing. Fundamentals have never made any sense to me. Either way, posting my art here. I looked at many artworks in this thread but... I don't know how to critique them, really. I would just restate what others would say, so apologies for not sharing any opinions other than: "looks good!"

this anon >>7232567 did a good job working with the given proportions. I don't know what you're going for so I referenced the character's original proportions.

I like the shape the shape for the mouth and I really like the legs for some reason. The angles on those feel good to look at, it's just how the curves and negative space play there that I like. Concerning the face, what went wrong here was mostly the face shape being too long from the bottom eyelid downward. I think that arc I see in the middle was the circle you made, so I started my breakdown from there. Another thing I noticed, there was a mark by the sideburn that looked like the corner of her jaw. I'm not sure if this is where you actually wanted to place it or not, but that's how it currently appears to me. My advice would be before placing any facial feature make sure you're happy with the head shape as well as to draw slower and lighter.

In regards to the breasts, leave some room to show the pecs. They lay a little lower than where you've placed them. If you take the time to improve your line confidence and slow down, you'll have a better drawing. Remember to think about what it is you're about to draw. There's some points around the hips in your drawing where it's difficult to distinguish some things. Specifically on her right-hand side.

>>7231270
Hopefully it was useful to everyone. Your figures are looking good, some minor proportional errors where extra time may help. your moving in a good direction. One thing I'll suggest is to think about rhythms and look for the pattern in pic rel everywhere that you can in the figure, especially the bigger masses. Also Matessi has some great things on the subject, reading and understanding what he's saying while copying/tracing some of his drawings will help the lively ness of your figures. One thing, if you're not going to do any of the former, is to think about where the figure is coming from and going to.

Starting off with drawing people is too hard for a complete beginner. Brent Eviston is the most retard friendly art instructor I've seen. >it feels hopeless (permabeg).
if you keep track of the hours you spend drawing, it can give you a better picture of how much work you've put in, and how good you "deserve" to be.

I've been immersing in Japanese for a year now, and it can be demotivating to wonder why I didn't get to Khatzumoto levels of fluency in that same time period, but when I check my logs I've only been immersing for around 700 hours, when in reality it takes around 2000 hours to comfortably pass the jlpt n1, and 7000 to be truly fluent (Aussieman).

I suspect learning to draw takes the same amount of time. Have you drawn for 2000 hours? 7000? This might be something that you want to start tracking soon.

>>

Maybe try painting thingy instead of drawing? I mean, you're drawing lines, so your logic is revolving around edges. Try using a huge brush and painting layer of color over other layer of color, don't bother with lines at all and try to make sense out of it purely with color changes, I only tried it couple times as a beg but it really changes the way you look at things.

Draw through shapes. Your boxes and cylinders should have thinner lines inside the shape that shows the planes not in view. Once you're done, check that lines going in the same direction away from the viewer properly converge towards the same vanishing point. You should also practice line confidence: for example if you're drawing a straight line, first decide point A and point B, then draw the line in one clean stroke, instead of slowly wobbling.

tl;dr Do the whole drawabox.com rigamaroo. Shit's boring as fuck but it forces you to think in three dimensions and also teaches line quality.

Wacom or XPPen?

If you're gonna spend the same amount of money either way, then just get the Wacom

But the XPPen has more resolution and I have seen better reviews for it. Cintiq is Cintiq but it is also a far older model.
