The general thread for Manga / manga-styled comic-making, manga-style illustration and related comic work. That said, everyone is welcome here.

Support each other and talk about your work or the work of others that excites you. Inking, character design, paneling / layout, writing, planning, and other discussions are all welcome.
Post resources, questions, in-progress pages, breakdowns of other works, etc. If a work is not yours, credit the maker (unless it's fucking obvious like a full page of One Piece or something).
Thanks to everyone for making /mmg/ a level-headed and helpful place. Remember, drawing and making comics and manga are difficult endeavors, and we're all in this struggle together.

Some western / indie publishers of Manga:

Saturday AM ( https://www.saturday-am.com/ )
> Digital indie magazine, seems to be on the up-and-up
> Open submissions for long-form series; also distributes series currently being published elsewhere.
> Regularly publishes one-shots, making it a good potential outlet for already-finished work.

Oni Press ( https://onipress.com/ )
> Technically indie, but at this point large enough by comic standards to be mentioned in the same breath as other publishers.

Antarctic Press ( https://antarctic-press.myshopify.com/ )
> Longtime large-indie publisher of OEL / manga-esque books.
> Seemingly taking submissions at present if http://www.antarctic-press.com/html/submissions.php is anything to go on.

Yen Press ( https://yenpress.com/ )
> Started out as a small indie publisher of original / Korean material, and has grown reasonably popular since.
> As of 2016, it is also one of the western arms of the Kadokawa Corporation, with Kadokawa owning a 51% stake.
> Editorial inquiries can apparently be sent to yenpress@yenpress.com, however, they apparently are not open to new submissions at this time.

Viz Media / Viz Originals ( https://www.viz.com/originals )
> *The* western manga publisher.
> Currently in the exploratory stages of setting up an English label.
> Submissions are open and several books have been announced. However, progress on the label seems to be moving very slowly.
> Still might be worth a shot anyway.

Shrine Comics ( https://shrinecomics.com/ )
> Small indie manga publisher
> Seemingly attempting to make the transition to physical volumes
> Allows crossposting to other sites

Iconic Comics (https://www.iconiccomics.com/)
>A bit like Oni Press and Antarctic Press
>A small publisher with a focus on indie works with manga inspiration

Other open comic publishers:

Dark Horse ( https://www.darkhorse.com )
>Dark Horse still welcomes your submissions, and all submissions will still be reviewed, just as they always have been.
>All unsolicited story/series proposals must have a full creative team on board. Writer-only proposals will not be reviewed.

Image comics ( https://imagecomics.com/ )
>Image Comics only publishes creator-owned material. They do not contract creators; they’re only interested in publishing original content for which you would retain all rights.
>Image Comics publishes creator-owned/creator-generated properties and THEY DON’T PAY PAGE RATES. Image takes a small flat fee off the books published, and it will be the responsibility of the creators to determine the division of the remaining pay between their creative team members.

Drawn and quarterly ( https://drawnandquarterly.com/ )
>Please email a low resolution PDF with at least 20 pages of comics and cover letter to submissions. Do not send dropbox links, scripts, or proposals. Please read our submissions FAQ.

Fantagraphics ( https://www.fantagraphics.com/ )
>submission page: https://www.fantagraphics.com/pages/faq

Top Shelf Productions ( https://www.topshelfcomix.com/ )
>Regarding submissions, we're easy. Just email us a download link of what you'd like us to review. NOTE: We cannot accept cover letters, plot synopses, or scripts unless they are accompanied by a minimum of 10-20 completed pages (i.e., fully inked and lettered comic book pages).

I'm sorry for posting the link again, but i came with a few question since yesterday, and i hope that if someone here knows how to manage themselves with pixiv can help me
-do anybody knows why i can't add a twitter link to it?
-also if anybody knows which are good hastash to add to it
-the location doesn't change, it's says that i'm or i'm from japan, and i don't want any misunderstanding
https://www.pixiv.net/en/artworks/123917599
P.s. do anybody knows how to paint a better cover, i did this one without really knowing how to paint, and i was just using copic brushes from csp assets, besides my arm was giving up at that time so i rather finish it fast. What i wanted for the color in the covers was like those manga covers that looks like painted with watercolors or something like that

What is the most efficient way to finish pages?

1 - Storyboarding first, then sketch, then linework, and then screetones and dialogue/sfx for each page before proceeding to the next.

Or

2 - Do the linework for all of them, then screentones for all pages and etc...
>>
>>7354699
It makes no difference. Just do what works best for you. Personally, I storyboard the whole chapter then work in 5 page increments.

I really have no clue how medibang works. There are comics there with tons of views but are drawn like dogshit.

Actually, a lot of them are pretty decently written and I enjoyed reading them, but you wouldn't know that just looking at the first few pages. I say the art is shit but it doesn't really bother me as an artist, I thought it would bother a normal consumer though. But no, people happily read chris-chan level comics. Is everyone on medibang very non-judgemental or what?
>>
>>7355369
Pretty nice artwork man, I can feel the effort. It reads fairly clearly too. Keep up the hard work!
I will say that the dialogue is downright eyerolling at points though. Funny in a bad way.

>>7355409
People read some of them to laugh at.
>>
>>7355411

>>
>>7355369
Good art and great feet anon! Personally, I think the screentone pattern should have smaller dots though.
>>
>>7355411
Thanks, I don't have any experience to speak of when it comes to writing dialog, so that's definitely a weak point at the moment. At least it's a good start If it's alright to look at and reads somewhat clearly

>>7355418
I've been experimenting with dot sizes and agree smaller dots can look better, especially in smaller panels where the inking details get fucked if the dots are too big. I think the comic looks more consistent if you keep the dot size the same across pages, but making them smaller overall might be a good call.

>scrooge mcduck reference
If you were to change that to simply Ebenezer Scrooge, you would leave the general reference intact without running into any issues of Disney's lawyers wanting to give you a second butthole, especially if you wanted to make a quick penny off of it. And don't think you aren't big enough to get noticed - they went after a grieving family who wanted to put Spidey on their kids tombstone.

I procrastinate too much on the panel sketching phase because I fear I might make a mistake and ruin the flow of the story. Or my current ideia is not good enough and I can't come up with something better. How do I fix this?

You keep in mind that you can re-sketch over the sketch everything you don't like, and move on
Some artists even do thinner linework on top of linework multiple times for thin line accuracy alone

Is it a good idea that the covers are part of a little story?
I don't mean like oda, more like the idea for the first cover was that it was a picture and then a little funny side story happen after that

How do I make my screentones look like this? With dots just big enough to give some texture to the image without making the entire page spotted. I use the default settings on Krita and the dots will either be too small to the point to the point where the page seems to have no screentones, or, they'll be too big and visible.
>>
>>7356121
By printing it on cheap paper and then scanning it back in.
The way the manga you read looks is different from the manga they drew. This is a reproduction of the original drawing. Your own drawings will look more like the original drawings than the reproduction because your drawing has not been scanned in, mass-printed and then scanned in again.
As for how to get that look, you're going to have to fake it with paper textures and smoothing/blur.
>>
>>7356121
You sure are dots? It could be anything, for me looks like noise screentone
>>
>>7356160
It looks like dots when you zoom in. But it seems to be a different type of pattern than you usually see.

Here's an example of what a noise pattern looks like in print.
This is imperfect because I'm just taking a close-up photo with my phone of a magazine page which is typically larger than a tankoubon, but still. I'm reasonably sure that YKK page is just the basic 60L/10 screentone.
>>
>>7356227
>60L/10 screentone.
It could be, but i think that noise screentone aren't in ppl, just density
>>
>>7356236
>>7356227
Yep, i went to check and it is density, noise size and factor
>>
>>7356121
>buy tones once
>scan and use them forever

I may have given this advice once already at least, but it's a good idea if you hate dealing with uniform digital dots and mess, real screentone has a natural texture that is pleasent to look at.

>>7356160
like >>7356151 mentioned, this is likely due to the fact that it's a scan. So what you're seeing is the reproduced book's natural paper texture behind the tone, which is cheap newsprint.

You don't have to go this route though, simply scanning it should be enough. If it really annoys you, you can throw on a multiply layer paper texture- but keep in mind if you ever want to print it will look fucked up and probably way darker than it should look.
>>
>>7356227
>>7356236
Nice info guys. Thanks
>>
>>7356236
>>7356239
I mean the basic 60L/10 dot pattern, anon. There is a noise factor, but that comes from the paper & scan. That's not a noise screentone, but a basic dot screentone.
>>
I test it a little, and the factor is how much the particle spreads, the lesser the factor makes the noise just points, and the bigger the factor those points became lines
>>
>>7356250
Oh, i got it... i think, i mean no noise screentone, but natural noise due the print?

Loved your comic, anon. You seem to really like Fujimoto's art style and… feet. I think you should have used the second chapter to explore her life in the village a bit more. Some information about the principles could have been kept hidden from us and revealed as the story progresses, but overral I'm enjoying it.
>>
>>7355369
Someone in the last thread asked about writing, and I would like them to read this.
What a huge exposition dump. It went on for much longer than needed. You almost justify it by Priscilla not knowing, but she didnt really ask either.
Also "esoteric principles" seems like a non sequitur, but that's just a nitpick. I would have liked to learn more about morphosis.

Your environment art is phenomenal though anon. Very clean, and and it really put me into the setting.
>>
>>7356320
Oh wow I was actually going to mention you in my criticism I just posted.

So well... i decided what i'm going to do, but first i wanna see if these are good pitch ideas for the upcoming chapters that i had (a long while ago)

Chapter 2: mr.Backdrop way to school/ハイケイ-さんの通学路 (this one comes because i loved chio-chan no tsuugakuro)
It starts with a girl doing the usual toast of tardiness, but then she gets shove away by the protagonist running away from a eerie groups of birds, the chapters goes on by the protagonist trying to get to school, but then there's a fight between a monster and a mecha.

Chapter 3: thrive and tribulations
This one is a bit more personal, the protagonist have to pay back a favor so he stay late to clean the gym, and there he mets an injured athlete that is about to quit his club, but the protaginist try to change his mind

Chapter 4: munchausen by proxy
This one is simple, the protagonist gets used by his friend to flirt with the nurse

Chapter 5: i don't have a name yet for this one
The protagonist gets confused with someone else, so a girl (my favorite character so far) ask him to get rid of her bulling problem

Chapter 6: no name neither
Starts with the girl that quit being a hero doing job hunting other hero agencies

I making progress. The second page is done.
I'm learning a lot of things when it comes to quality and time management.
A few things in this page is looks good to me but, I really only find it passable when I compare it to pros.
But, when comes to making things on deadline, making things passable is okay.

If I want something that's beyond passable to me in my comics, I'll have to get faster in my workflow.
I'll just keep pushing through until I hit the page limit. It's nearly 3 am and my back hurts so, I'm going to sleep.

Editors really are crucial if you're autistic or otherwise not "the average guy". Things that make perfect sense to you will be cryptic and confusing to readers, its so frustrating when someone tells me they have no idea what happened in a panel when its as clear as day. Without an editor, you can't ever know what it looks like to fresh eyes.

My problem is I care a lot more about getting good at making comics than I do about comics themselves. I can't use screentones because it feels like I'm wasting an opportunity to practice something.

I attempted to turn my drawing into a proper manga panel for the first time. How does this look?
>>
>>7357638
Not so good. I have no way of knowing this is a manga panel
>>
>>7357652
any tips on improving. It's more about the the drawing itself than the panel. I tried scanning my doodle and cleaning it up. I haven't tried that before
>>
>>7357659
Well, in terms of the drawing itself I wouldn't know where to start. Let's start with the gondolas knees.
Are you able to make 2 knees look alike? Then are you able to make those shapes the same size? Then can you make the hatching actually straight lines? And finally, can you please get those coffee spots off your drawing?
Ok that last part might by my dirty monitor.
But the other stuff stands.

I also don't really get your manga/comic angle.

Age please
>>
>>7357726
thanks for the legit feedback and not being too harsh on my first attempt. yes I can make try to make the lines and hatching better. I get the context is kind of lost here. The idea for this strip would be something like ,the girl is sleeping against gondola in a bus with her drool gradually extending and the gondola is trying to avoid it from touching his leg

Kek I thought the same at first. I still can't believe that my first comic I did to appeal for men got mainly female readers and the one I did to be for everyone with a female protag is almost all male readers.
>>
It's pretty fascinating how you can get to solutions when thinking about storylines. It's like every problem you run into first seems like a wall, but with some luck you can still find some pretty interesting solutions. As if it's a puzzle with multiple solution possibilities and you can bend the reality of your story to your liking. Ideas are really infinite. The problem is just to get to the ideas fast enough. That's what I still don't understand. How manga artists are able to create stories so fast is beyond me.
>>
I tend to start with an idea, and don't even know how the idea should end in an effective way. But when I really think about it, I tend to find an interesting way for it to work. I don't if that's my intution which is at work or if that's just how writing stories goes.

I reference manga I think have good paneling when doing this. I also like to make the storyboard/thumbnails for two pages at a time, to plan out potential double spreads and how everything would look like if I want to print it down the road. I think the best way to get better is mileage and taking inspiration from great page layouts from existing manga

you're coping. buddy it's nothing to do with block letters, letters have no consistency between them, you wrote 20 "e"s and all of them are unique. spaces between words are variable in length (no gap between know, but, gap between but I've longer than I've been, two e's in "been" are massively different sizes), lines of text meander up and down the page and letters within individual words are different in size. just look at the d in "Regar d s". autism is tied with motor issues. writing in cursive doesn't fix any of this. your manga is soulful though.

One of the things I always loved about manga is how much you actually can express yourself through this medium. It's an ultimate form of self-expression, because it combines drawing with writing.

I just want to master the writing part too. It's difficult, but I won't give up

I have a ton of inspiration to draw from. My taste is pretty sophisticated, no matter if manga, books, fine art, movies or music. I also studied writing a bit, story elements, the process and how a good story is structured.
But still, actually putting it on paper is not easy. Often I have vague ideas of the content I want to draw/write, but fleshing them out and forming it into a smooth story is difficult.

It just has to feel right. You need good intution to write good stories.

That's because that's a digital release where the lines are indeed somewhat blurry. In the original drawing, their lines would be just as crisp as yours. Don't worry too much about getting the exact properties of the image, focus on what the author is doing with the actual lines. How they're conveying depth and shadow with them, weight and lightness. Focus on the techniques they're using to bring the image to life, not the technical aspects of the brush or image quality.
>>
>>7360891
>You need good intuition to write good stories.
Not necessarily. Stories that come from your personal life, family history, friends, etc.
Stories from Erin Brockovich to William Wallace, both interesting in their own right, and true stories.

Not sure if it helps, but look at this vid on Luke Pearson talking about his Hilda series(i know not Japanese, heresy) and how he developed the character. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i6I9HuWELbI Notice how he didnt have a story planned out for this character, he just thought of a character and put her in a simple situation, literally just her being in this world. Its a process of exploring, asking yourself who this character really is, what the world is like, what problems does this character go through? You can know all the bullshit about story structure and whatever but you gotta think a little more gayer then just that, you really gotta attach yourself to the characters that you draw. For Luke Pearson he put his character in these strange landscapes and was probably asking himself whats the world this girl lives in and explores that, he got inspired about some gay quote about exploring and gave his character red boots in reference to that, so she wants her to be an explorer in this weird world he depicted. Once you attach yourself to the character then writing becomes more simple. But of course you have to put your ideas down on paper. Its not like you are gonna write gold from just the fist page, you only know you got gold once you get a ways into the writing process, and then you can adjust as needed. Writing is not a linear process, you are supposed to go back and forth, ask questions, re-examine, but you need to take those abstract ideas and turn them real cause of course your perfect idea might make sense in your head but you'll never know until you actually put pen to paper and do the hard work to figure it out if it actually works.

You will end up with a short comic in five years time, if that. Improve as you go. Hell, take a look at some of /mmg/'s own anons, and look at their very first episode/chapter and look at what they've recently made. Just by grinding out the artistic mileage of earnestly drawing (but not trying to be a perfectionist) each panel, they get better over time. Autistically grinding every panel to death trying to will a turd into becoming a professional turd is how you end up being some (keyword SOME) of the anons you sometimes see on the /beg/ threads or in /asg/.

It's not a negative response. Like, everyone would likely agree that Cardcaptor Sakura the series as a whole is really cute (or anything from CLAMP, really), and that's never a bad thing. If anything, it sucks more when anon posts a picture of whatever it is they drew recently and it gets exactly zero responses.

I'm someone who mostly reads manga but I'm thinking of trying for a job in Western comics so I'm looking for a bit of knowledge from people who know it more than me. Sorry if the questions are a bit basic.
1. What are the typical page dimensions and are they the same across publishers? If I wanted to work digitally, what would it be in pixels?
2. For creator owned comics, is Image the only option? And do you need to have the whole team planned out before hand? Do the letterers and colourist also count as owners or just the writer and artist?
3. What is the market penetration of non superhero comics in the market? And what is the penetration outside of comics fans into more general readers? What kinds of comics make that leap?
4. Lastly, page counts. My understanding is that typically a monthly comic is 22 pages. Is that correct? Are there any exceptions? Also, does it happen that pages from issue to issue vary? Like one chapter has 20, another has 30, things of that sort. Manga has that happen but they're also published in a magazine so it's a pretty different industry context
Thanks in advance!
>>
>>7362226
I know it's too late, but I think this is an instance where having a more manga style panel would work better. Our eyes go from top to bottom, regardless if we are reading left or right. It would be more of a jump scare if the banshee came from a low panel with nothing besides it. But that's just my 2 cents. Either way, looking forward to how the plan to defeat it works out. Hoping for a cool twist
>>
>>7362283
Its really different depending on a lot of things. If you just want a job working on some existing book and characters, you really just submit your portfolio and hope for the best, but like with a lot of things, chances are you're just going to get a rejection.

If you're looking to just get your indie book published, I think with Image you literally just pay a flat fee (something like $2500, or something) and they'll publish it. There's probably a lot more to it than that, but that's something you'd have to look up.

But like most people these days, you're probably just best trying to publish your book yourself and just going through one of the many print-on-demand companies that exist out there. Of course, in that instance, you'd have to (potentially) crowd fund it, market it yourself, etc.

1.) Generally, work for American comics is done at 11x17, and when print, its roughly 6.5x10 (about). Though, if you're self publishing or getting it done print-on-demand, you'd have to see what their dimensions are, because you generally work a hair larger than that because of the printing process, some of the edges get trimmed off.

2.) I'm not entirely sure, but like I said, Image you really just pay them a little bit, or you go the self-publishing route. I'd imagine you'd retain all the rights so long as you pay/credit the team, and they understand what part their ownership is. For instance, Todd McFarlane owns Spawn, but there have been many, MANY artists and writers for Spawn over the years. There were even some issues with some of the characters he used in Spawn, but he was only the Co-creator or whatever, that created a huge headache for him in the 90s' and he lost the ability to use those characters, and even some of the concepts around them.
>>
>>7362283
>>7362317
cont.

3.) Honestly, in the West, its mostly Super hero stuff. There's plenty of action/adventure/horror/etc. stuff also coming out of the indie publishers like Image. Some of them have done pretty well (think The Walking Dead) but there are plenty of other genres and stuff that do plenty well.

4.) Generally, I believe they're 22-24 pages, but frankly, you can do whatever you want especially if you're going to self-publish.

Thanks for the helpful answer! A couple of followups
>with Image you literally just pay a flat fee (something like $2500, or something) and they'll publish it.
So I have to pay a flat fee upfront to get it published? There's no system where if they think my work is good enough they publish it and take a cut of the revenue?
>Some of them have done pretty well
Is it common that they sell well outside of comics circles? Like mainstream actual book readers?

>Of course, in that instance, you'd have to (potentially) crowd fund it, market it yourself, etc.
To be clear, I'm not sure how much marketing publishers do this days so you'll likely have to market it yourself no matter what.

>>7362339
>There's no system where if they think my work is good enough they publish it and take a cut of the revenue?
That's how japan does it. The two industries are essentially the inverse of each other terms of how they function.
>>
>>7362339
>So I have to pay a flat fee upfront to get it published? There's no system where if they think my work is good enough they publish it and take a cut of the revenue?

I'm not sure. That's something you'd probably have to look into yourself. I just know you pay them up front, and they'll publish your comic. I'm sure there are stipulations. I'd imagine there's SOME vetting process, so they're not just printing someone's stick figure comics. And I'm not sure if your comic does well, if you have to pay them more, or a percentage, or what.

Though, there are also publishers like Antarctic Press who tend to publish a lot of US anime/manga style comics in American style format. You can pretty much submit work to them at just about any time.

>asking yourself who this character really is, what the world is like, what problems does this character go through
It really depends on what kind of story you want to write. Character focused stories are probably the most popular. It's the Hollywood formula of Characters > Story > Visuals. My formula is rather the opposite of that. To me characters are the least important. What's most important to me are the visuals and the story. I constantly try to think of interesting visuals I could draw and how I could get to these situations. I also think about the theme before I actually start drawing. The theme of a story is very important. It holds everything together. Without a theme your story would just become random chaos.
>>
>>7363114
>>7363131
What are you using to scan your pages?
>>
>>7363213
What? Most movies these days are all about the visuals, and story and characters take a distant back seat. Its all about CGI and the spectacle and scale of what's being shown. Its why stuff like Avatar, Star Wars, MCU, and Fast and Furious, etc. are so huge. Movies are largely all about how much shit you can shove in front of people's eyes.

Its really only indie movies and small projects that actually settle down to make things about characters and plot/story.

Sounds to me like you don't know what interesting visuals are. Just because something is an action movie doesn't mean it's about the visuals. It's about action, but it still focuses on the characters. That's why every videogame cover nowadays is the face of an action hero instead of an interesting image.
>>
Hollywood formula is cringe exactly because it focuses on characters so much. It tries to evoke a false sense of emotion in the viewer through cheesy dialogues. That's exactly opposite of what I like. I can't stand watching most movies because they are just too emo and cheesy.
>>
>>7363277
>Star Wars
Star Wars obviously has a huge focus on the characters. It's an average hero path story, which is obviously a character focused story. Just because it's set in a sci-fi world and full of action, doesn't mean its focus is the visuals. It's just an action hero story.
