You need to not be afraid to hide a muscle group behind another for foreshortening to work. The problem is not the anatomy per se, is that you need to show everything and are forgetting perspective.

You are not thinking with boxes.

If you cannot look at an image and intuitively pick up the 3D cues in it, that is an issue that should probably be solved before you ever think of touching anatomy.

trying intense construction hasn't been working for me, so i just went with trying to feel the form instead. People tell me the studies look passable, but I'm too mentally ill to trust people
>>
>>7399331
It's about tying your kinetic sense of touch to drawing. You can trick your brain into literally feeling the forms you are drawing so the become more three dimensional. You can feel round forms as they turn. You can push and pull forms like you are sculpting, but while drawing.
>>
>>7399355
these suck (they're actually really good)
>>
>>7399331
>what the FUCK is he talking about how do I pull things towards me in a fucking flat piece of paper

The issue is you're thinking of it as a flat 2D piece of paper.

Drawings are 2D. A flat surface, no depth. When we draw we are trying to convey a 3D tangible object (even a fake anime girl) on a 2D plane. Our brain, when we start drawing, knows this is going to be a 2D drawing, so it thinks of our 3D object as a 2D object. This is NOT what we want to do.

What we want to train ourselves to do is rather imagine the subject we are trying to draw as a real life 3D object. Think and imagine it as if it were right Infront of you. Not even with the objective of drawing it. Use your brain as if it were a 3D modeling / rendering software. Try and picture your subject as if it were real, 3D and right infront of you.

Once you can do that with the object as is, manipulate it. What happens when you imagine it closer to you? Stretched out? Etc. This is 'feeling the form'

When you do this enough you won't be able to just make the 3D model in your head, you'll be able to 'feel' it, as vague as that sounds. It is just you understanding and thinking 3 dimensionally. It is no magic button, or on switch. You are just training your brain to see the objects you draw as real life 3D objects, and then projecting that onto your 2D paper.

Thats why they say to 'spam boxes' the box is simple to draw and is simple to imagine 3-dimensionally in your mind. You do it enough, you can construct a box, and then a cylinder isn't that difficult, then a sphere, on and on until you are feeling more complex forms.

Day 11: I am beginning to have a greater and more acute understanding of how huge of a difference having just a few extra milimeters on a line can make. Originally, her jaw was much wider.
Also have gotten multiple people to point out that I tend to put my eyes too high, so I wanted to try to address that this time.

You are not required to make extreme foreshortening 100% completely fully realistic, it's more of a stylistic choice (as long as you are not making it look very wrong like making it too short and small). Otherwise you may end up with THAT picture of Juri Han.

Okay, two specific things I want to tackle with my art problems. Here is a thing I drew kinda quickly. I have a really big problem with just making mistakes whenever I make a line. Like you can see the fuck ups on this. Why can't I just make a line right? And also I constantly fuck up drawing things symmetrically. Like the two curvy bits on the side of his face are completely wrong, and I know they're wrong. But I tried for xing it multiple times and can't get it to look right. Even though I loomised this head it still looks disproportionate and flat with no depth. Honestly my lines frustrate me the most.
>>
>>7399421
I propose 2 possible solutions:
1. Check something like Saint Seiya's helmet or other similar armor mangas/animes. And see how they do it.
2. Cut/fold a paper into a similar shape. And check the mirror.

Use construction lines if you aren't already. As in, draw the character out in a geometrical shape first so its easier to then place your character over that "template"and then remove the lines. or just do them to practice fundamentals, it will help your art in the long run, even if it's just my waifu you plan on drawing

sometimes I look at photos and I can't help but think that the anatomy looks wrong. Obviously it isn't but there's just so much going on, especially at the extreme ends of the bell curve and at odd angles it can just look weird. Guess I'll just tone back the absurd foreshortening and do more realistic angles, although it's fun to go a bit crazy at times.
>>
>>7399439
I only know some very basics by having read bits of loomis before. Like drawing
a circle and making a horizontal and vertical line to turn it into a sphere, with where they intersect being the middle of the face and how they curve indicating the angle.
My purpose with these 30 days mainly is to make drawing every day a habit, and to simply see how much I can improve by just drawing. Because it seems that what artists complain the most about with others who are asking how to draw, is that they don't actually try to just fucking draw. Once I get past december I want to try harder with more technical learning
>>
>>7399333
>nobody has an exact sciece
Fucking STEM brainrot, holy shit.
Not everything is science, not everything should be science. What, you want a goddamn AB test attached to every teaching method for art? That wouldn't even work.

You don't even know what art is nor what science is, wtf do you mean by "exact science of drawing" you mongoloid? How tf can drawing be an exact science? You gonna have an empirically and mathematically claim that a line in a certain position of a page will achieve the most aesthetic value?

Get yourself some fucking philosophy of science before you spout this kind of BS or stop making excuses and just draw.

It looks good! It’s normal to use construction lines and then extend or adjust them as you finish, but it might be due to not yet mastering proportions. Over time, you'll internalize the proportions you prefer for both the face and the rest of the body, and you'll refine your construction methods. You might even eventually be able to draw without construction lines.
However, my advice is to use a cube instead of a sphere because when you use a cube, it's easier to understand distortion and what part you’re looking at. When you draw a cube, you can easily notice the three dimensions and know which faces of the cube you’re viewing. On the other hand, if you don’t yet have a deep grasp of 3D forms, every time you draw a sphere, the proportions might change. I’m not sure if you understand what I mean, but if you know how to rotate a cube like in pic related, you'll never have issues with proportions

What's the source on this krenz book? NTA
>>
>>7399965
I look to a wide variety of sources, from historical to scifi and cartoons, but I don't reference designs from past the 90s. I also don't look at modern military equipment, but only older stuff and mix it with 90s over the top comics and how cartoons depicted it.
I intentionally don't variety line weight of the pens used, this is hopefully to give something of the quality of a cheap and fast made 90s cartoon. I do a broken dot-dash for lighter lines but all with the same pen.
Colors are always bright and saturated, I want to capture almost an action figure logic to colors.
TLDR there are a lot of intersecting things pointing me towards a look I'm chasing. I am also along the way learning or relearning skills

You got to at least box out the main shapes. Draw a box for the receiver, then draw a cylinder for the barrel. Make sure the angles of everything is matching- in your pic it looks like the drum is at an angle but everything else is flat. If you aren't confident drawing parallel lines use a straight edge are least for the main shapes.
>>
>>7400131
I don't know if I can teach it. I always draw people or humanoids with the same simple kind of construction with tapered cylinders for the starter arms and legs. For armor or robots it is easy to just leave the cylinders. I've worked on reducing detail to the bare minimum and making big easy to recognize shapes so I can go really low detail and chunky to draw small figures. I let colors do all the shading
>>
>>7400154
I can scale up detail. For me I still struggle with realistic, non-deformed expressive human faces. I draw a lot of aliens, robots, scarred, and deformed people or people in masks to hide it

Advice on painting? I was doing one about fruit but just one item took me 2 hours and it looks okay for the 2nd ever fruit drawing I've done, but I'm wondering if I took too long for something like this.
It involved a lot of eyedropper tool, is it bad to depend on that?
>>
it's normal for some of your art to be better than others right? Sometimes I'll draw something that comes out pretty well (imo) but sometimes I'll draw something that comes out crap. I'm just wondering if it's something I should worry about or just accept that some pieces will have mistakes
>>
>>7400253
>it's normal for some of your art to be better than others right?
extremely. not only that, but most of it - and more advanced artists (IME) say this as well - tends to be relatively disappointing or off from the ideal. it's very common to draw something and see great improvement in your abilities and then the next 20 drawings have a noticeably lower quality. improvement is very gradual. all you can do is periodically assess how you're studying, where you can improve, and try to implement those changes. beyond that, it's all about putting in the drawing hours.

...is there no other way? working with grayscale is real boring to me. Also something weird happened with that reference image that might be worth stating, halfway it seems I didn't want to recreate the pear 1:1 and I deviated a lot from the reference making it brighter. Was that failure to identify what I wanted to actually draw from the beginning? looking at it again, the pear looks boring to me with that lighting.

If you suck at value, logic dictates you practice value, not color.

When studying like this its better to copy the ref as closely as possible cause it trains your drawing skills better (or something like that)

not the anon you replied to but
"talent" is something that only means "head start" and only matters when you are <18. Once you turn adult artist, people are looking for something more than just talent. "Ok so you can draw. What else you got? Why should I care/pay money to see your art?" Once you turn into an adult and go to art school (which is a rip off and doesn't guarentee anything like any other degree, it is literally one of the few areas in life that is truly skill based in that you reap what you put into it and most apt artists are better off learning from the internet and saving their parents shekels.)

Your art has dare i say it, soul to the lines. i think you are being too hard on yourself , id be happy to redline your picture if you can just tell me the name of the touhou character youre shooting for. I’m not the best digital artist, ( i use too much stabilizer) but I know some anatomy/good anime proportions from drawing traditionally for so many years

How do I properly fix mistakes? I'm doing my best to. I monitor for them early on while referencing studies, from the very first pencil strokes. I invariably identify one, then correct it. Then the rest of the drawing looks wrong compared to the fix, which may not have even been a fix or necessary. So I "fix" the rest of the drawing, only to find that every single part of it looks bad, now. I've never had constructively taking a step back and looking at what's wrong with something and how it could be fixed yield absolutely nothing. It always yields some sort of progress, even if I'm still doing whatever I'm trying wrong. But here, it does zilch. Nothing. If anything, it feels like I'm being punished for being proactive in my approach. There's gotta be a better way to study by copying, I've never felt this terrible in my life. It's like a goddamm horror movie, first you notice your hair looks off in the mirror, so you adjust it, only to find your forehead's skin sloughing around. You try to move that back into place, only to find your nose, then your mouth, and finally your entire skull have become a twisted, gnarled car crash of features.
>>
>>7400931
Roll with the errors. In time you're gonna make fewer and fewer of them.
What you're describing is insane.
>>
Which of these strategies is the best do you reckon?
>practice multiple different skills the same day for a short amount of time each
>practice just one skill for the whole day, a different skill the next day and so on
>go all in on one skill and grind for several weeks before switching to something else
Obviously I draw for fun on top of this, talking strictly about the time devoted to practice
>>
>>7400934
first one because the others will just burn you out
>>
How much time do you guys dedicate each day to drawing?
>>
>>7400901
That freckles girl is getting MOGGED
>>
>>7400933
How can I roll with the errors when errors compound exponentially in art? If I leave even one in, it's going to be a monstrosity by the time it's done. It's either too big for the page, or part of the hair is too large and it puts the ears and invariably the rest of the head out of proportion, or the chin is too long and it ruined the rest of the face by existing in that form, whatever the case may be.
>>
>>7400931
unless you're doing something autistic like bargue plates you don't (and shouldn't) have to copy 1:1, whatever you draw only has to be consistent with itself
>>
>>7400941

Drawing from imagination is like if you were doing a live performance after practicing. It's what all your efforts go towards. It might not look good in your eyes, but I see proof of effort and studying. Don't let where you are now discourage you from continuing to practice. Good job. Your perspective is decent for the environment but proportions are weak for the bodies, feels almost like forced perspective, you need more mileage with bodies and poses. Drawing from imagination masterfully is the final boss and the only way to master it is mileage, practice and expansion of your visual library which loops back to mileage. Keep it up.

I discovered this recently. Before, I'd agonise over pose drawing, redrawing it multiple times. I think this works for me because Im drawing for the whole pose, rather than just the leg's pose.

You can't draw a line. Don't overwhelm yourself with terms from artworld that you can't apply. First thing you want to improve isCSI; C curve, S curve and straight line. Any angle and direction. In other words, decrease the amount of strokes you make.
>>
>>7401636

You should first exercise making those single long strokes over other people's work, own work, or elipses. Tracing over elipses is good exercise. Forget shapes for now. If you get three nice lines in correct angle connected, you get a shape. It's nice when it clicks that way.

Yeah. Line into shape into form into construction (where you will need perspective and anatomy knowledge too). But you need to trial yourself, meaning, you need to see yourself fail. Like you want to draw a sphere, so you do it, and then you overlay your sphere over over real one and see how much off you were and where. Your brain loves this crap, it is was literally build for this.

I've written a story that I want to actually see. I don't care how long it will take, I want to do it myself and I really believe in it

Anyway, thanks for everything

Think in years. But also understand this is something you forget thinking about really fast. It's only when you don't put in the hard work you obsess with the distance from starting point. I really like you already can finish an illustration, despite it not looking great. But i feel you need to be more grim. Make no compromises. No bullshit.

When I'll make it I'll also think about you, I won't forget it
I have everything I need to walk on this path for a long time

Why not you just copy the left picture? It has grids. Do it grid by grid.

Pretty sure facial expressions are one of the most important parts of VNs so you'll probably be fine if you just keep practicing.

You set the proportions. There are 6 head, 6,5 heads, 7 head proportions, you measure it yourself. What's fucked is the perspective.

>>

I think cyclops boobs are perfect size as always. I think the shape is good considering she is resting her breasts on her forearm. you should try to do hatching when you try to scan your drawings. your shading is really good in your drawings, but you lose it when you go digital

finished first sketchbook
1.5 months, 57 hours of drawing total

have I visibly improved much?

I wanted to fill my next sketchbook with drawings of bone and anatomy studies, and start a fundamentals of drawing and an intro to drafting class at my local college after I finish that.

solid or should i do something else?

thanks

I think it's nice anon
the values on her belly/lap areas are a bit flat, so I would go for bigger shapes on the shadows to help the readability of it, as I can't really tell what's the camera angle without the background

Drawing one Makima every day for the month of December to see how much I can improve
Day 14: I feel like this is as close as I have ever gotten to her chin and jaw area turning out how I see it in panels with her. I've also seen some drawings where they show shading by drawing criss-cross paterns like that, and I think it can look neat so I tried it.

Help I cant into perspective or shit at all.
It is supposed to be from a top view but the perspective came out BAD.
Would it be counterproductive towards learning to just trace over 3d models? I am too stupid to draw without refs

>>
>>7402758
Yes use 3d models to get the perspective right and eventually you'll be able to stop using them.
Be aware that 3d models are stiff af so theres no gesture at all. You might use it as a ref on perspective but have to give the pose life by drawing the gesture yourself

What can I say? It's good. I think the question is whether you can draw the same character in different poses.

No it is right but the models specifically
seems stiff.
You can also use a grid+box for perspective and draw your figures in there instead (perspective made easy or something in the store)

Should I do another pose while doing working on that one? I have a bad habit of not finishing pieces. Or are you suggesting I've made the design too complex because that's a concern I had myself. I figured I could simplify the character more when I have a desirable form for him. Right now I'm going off descriptions I gave of him during dnd. This is the first depiction I've drawn of him in armor. I did do a sketch of the same guy but younger and not in a rage. I didnt really do anything with the sketch tho
