Starting digital painting, using photoshop.

How do I render / blend colors? I get the concept and some of the theory, but struggle on knowing what to do in photoshop itself.

Right now I've just been putting down two colors, and then spamming the smudge tool.

Any tips / good resources?

>>
>>7396836
Just get a feel for it. Turning those two options on together makes it feel like an entirely different tool.

I like to use a pretty small brush to blend things together in a kind of hatching pattern and use the blur tool to smooth it out if needed. But just play around with it and find something you like. Basically everyone does it differently, there isn't really a best way.

Yep, I am really using those to see if I can get on an ok level with minimal revisions. And I noticied that my hands are only good after 10 redraws, so I am trying to fix that.

>>7396611
The head shape in ok but that ear needs work on simplification.

>>7396848

IME, best way to do something like that is to have a goal and planning what you'll learn towards it, with enough time to try stuff out.
>>
>>7396855
>I think I want to draw like a short comic or manga
then instead of learning anatomy, just make a short comic
your anatomy skill is probably not the bottleneck (yet) for making a compelling comic; you need to do the thing to discover your weak spots

I don't know if you ever shade with gray but if you do its bad practice cause it leads to a muddy look.
So because the shading was so light on the hair I decided to define the shadows more, first I overpainted the hair, I used the lasso to carve out the shadows at the base of the bangs, focus on the shape of the ahir, then I use blend to blend some edges , I mainly used a watercolor textured brush to overpaint while touching up areas which we primarily airburshed to have a harder edge to it.

could i get some advice on these hand studies? Theyre all 1-2 mins each, the right one is 5 minutes. im really struggling with gving them volume; despite simplifying the hands into simple shapes. the whole doesnt look very cohesive either, it looks jank, and they usually lack the elegance and lightness of the pictures i base them off of.

Any advice on how to fix those problems? Or types of exercices to practice etc...Also, I'd rather focus on suggesting volume solely through line, I'm not interested in adding shading/rendering them.

So, two major issues:
A. Your shadows aren't dark enough for the style you're going for. You really need the range if you want that rendered look. Your shadows are at ~70% lightness, whereas they really need to be around 40%.

B. You're shading with a color too close to gray. Even in a gray room with white lighting, subsurface scattering in meat, cloth, hair, or anything else even slightly transparent gives them a colored shadow. As does the reflected light coming off those things. And you have to vary the color of the shadows depending on the material, can't just set it all to purple and call it a day. That just makes the whole thing look both purple AND gray. I know that's a bit overwhelming. You can just make the fleshy bits a bit more red/orange. Anything else give it a bit of it's own color or the color of the room.

Just for an advice, look up how the pelvis connects to the body and how the legs are connected to it. What are you trying to represent with the second box? If you're trying to represent the hips with a box then your placement is a bit off. A good advice that works for me is looking for easy landmarks in the body to help place construction a bit easier. A couple good landmarks are the collarbones, ribs and iliac crest(the bones from the hip that stick out.) PRetty sure Proko in youtube has super easy to follow up tutorials about the torso and hips and how to find landmarks/simplify.

He's skilled and demonstrates a lot of useful things. Unfortunately, he uses terrible reference for most of them and he doesn't idealize the proportions or features. I wouldn't recommend copying them unless your skills a good enough to notice this and not ingrain these ugly people into your work. Pic related is one of the few normal looking ones.

The retarded shit IS the practice. Find out what holes you have. What you're doing is pussy footing around the real work. You're being really timid while you should be exploring and making mistakes. The circles and squares can be a 15-30 min warm up. You're cutting a lawn with a pair of scissors while you could be using a lawn mower.

The hatching looks better but it's still off. Lines are too thick and you're starting from the middle of the object not the edges.

I'll take this in consideration and try again.
How would you do dull plating? I don't want it super reflective feeling. I want it to feel worn an somewhat soot covered. The character strikes me as an assassin type. I feel like his armor would be matte with soot to keep light from reflecting. The other guy is definitely shiny so it's a useful example still. Just not what I want for the crow.
Additionally should all lines come from the edge? Because I definitely start from the edge but some lines I dont. Even in yours some look like the don't go or come from the edge. How do I utilize lines like that? Ill copy more pages but I'd also like you insight.

your boxes are misplaced. head box should be back further because the head is back. the middle line for your chest box isnt actually where the middle of the ref is. your hip box is placed too high. place it lower so it matches up with where the pelvis is. hips connect to legs at the widest-ish part.

typically when drawers say pen they mean something like ink. You used ballpoint which more akin to pencil in how it can vary the line width and value. nice jew

>>7397615
you want to research what is blending or smudging tool and use keybind shortcuts to increase or decrease line thickness so you dont get carpal tunel from billion strokes just to light up her belly. In krita you just hold ctrl+alt and then moving left right while drawing increases or decreases the line thickness

>>
>>7397361
I think the composition is weak. That box shape in the background keeps dragging my attention away from the characters. I think your values are muddy and make it hard to see things clearly. There's also something about the colors that don't work for me, possibly how there's no dominant color, like the piece is almost evenly split between a green top half and red bottom half.
You're doing good though and I like the idea so keep at it.

>>
>>7397781
How do you incorporate figure drawing and perpective onto a sketch?
>>
This took me four hours to draw.

I feel it's one of my best so far (since September last year), and this was the first time I ever drew this character and I feel I nailed their anatomy well enough.

Only thing I am not happy with is the right foot perspective wise, was a bitch to figure out so hope it isn't too jarring.

Critiques are welcome.

I love you cyclops-chan. Don't worry about all these guys hazing you

By starting the sketch by them
>figure drawing
Depends on the method
>perspective
Draw grids and vanishing points, for the basic shapes - boxes - in different rotations and point perspectives first, exactly until you're sick of it
Then switch to thinking of how things are relative to the eye level
>both
Figures are made of basic shapes that you can start with as easily manipulatable boxes, you can find/guess the rest of the answer

You'll just have to search and try different videos, methods, books, courses, because nobody knows which ones will help you understand better

Try using a bigger brush. And up the contrast the core shadow on the pear is clearly darker than most of the picture. The shadow on the stem looks like one of the darkest areas. If you're having trouble with contrast try simplifying your values into 3 separate tones (Dark light midtone) afterwards you can blend and adjust the darker tones.

It’s something I’m struggling to accept, but I’ve reached a point of not having much choice. Lately, it’s been less than 30 minutes but it’s because my normal work exacerbates it. Some days are better, but there’s entire stretches where drawing at all leads to bad enough pain to make me not want to do it. Downside is it feels like damned if you do damned if you don’t, so sometimes I just load up on Tylenol and ibuprofen and push through it anyway. I usually regret it though, so I’ve been taking it a lot easier. I’ve been working on a still life in acrylic gouache, but it’s been close to a month now. I was thinking about buying a course that’s considered good so that at least when I do have the energy and pain allowance, I’m doing stuff that’s productive and proven and structured.

The hand is the biggest culprit. It's way too small and it looks like the dude has a fifth finger, but I'm pretty sure that's just supposed to be his palm. I think a general rule of thumb (or hand lol) is that hands are about the size of your face.
I *slightly* moved some things around that I thought were off. Made his hand bigger, moved his head and neck to the left, and adjusted both arms to bring them closer in size.
Not the worst though! Keep it up!
>>
>>7398277
I'm sorry for your situation anon. Hope things get better.
In the mean time, you could hit practice drills like gesture drawing and value studies, things that can be, and SHOULD be, done briefly.
Trying to brainstorm ideas here ... it might be worthwhile to stop before the pain sinks in and then take notes of what you need to paint next in the piece or spots that need touching up. That way you can hop right back in without potentially meandering about.
It's silly sounding, but oil paints take forever to dry, so you could just pretend you're a classic painter and the breaks you're taking are for the painting, not you -- even if you're doing acrylic or guache.

The first couple, Anatomy for Artists and Simplified Forms were great, quite well done for what they are. Seems like the newer ones were rushed a bit, they didn't seem as polished but still useful as they covered muscled bodies and fat people which a lot of books don't.
Overall they don't have much instruction. He said they are meant to be used more as reference books rather than instructional books. That's why they are A5 size, so you can carry they around with you when you need to reference something. If you're a beginner it'll be hard to get much out of them. Beginners should use books or videos with more instruction.
