Am I doing these right? Started from zero a month ago. I take like 30 minutes to draw one of these from reference. I heard I should learn forms and simplify references into simple shapes before going into anatomy, so that's what I've been doing.
Also I've been having a hard time learning how to rotate landmarks. I can rotate a box but if I try to rotate anything along with the box, say the ribcage, I get lost. I'm thinking of copying 3d models and then try to draw from memory.
What should I do? I'm lost and I would appreciate the help from anons.

>symbol drawing is drawing with simplified shapes
That's kinda correct, if you are generous with the definition of a symbol. But most artists would just say shape drawing to be clear, symbol drawing has bad connotations.

>and chopping up the model into cylinders, spheroids rectangles etc
Thit is not shapes. Shapes = 2d (squares, circles, triangles), Form = 3d (boxes, cylinders, spheres).

Some one else will probably and certainly explain it better than me but I used my phones translation feature .

It basically says on the bad example that placing grounds elements diagonally; which is typically common when people do character perspective, is bad and make the piece look tilted.

On the good example place a parallel systemmetrical lines on the center of the screen for the ground elements

tilting the grid 45 degrees makes it more intuitive for this specific drawing but it's the same 3d space essentially, you can place the yellow grid over the red grid and all the intersections should align

The vanishing points are too close, which will make everything look distorted. Tackling this scenario as a 1VP setup is more natural and avoids distorting the image within the cone of vision. When things go outside the cone of vision, you can switch to 2VP with the second vanishing point placed really far away, so far that the guidelines are almost perpendicular to the first.

These concepts are explained better in composition books, specifically in their applied perspective sections. There's no need to use images in languages you don't understand.

phils design corner has a great series on applied perspective

>>

>>

set up perspective lines so that they align with the middle of the screen, and layout the bumpiness (ups and downs of the ground) and grass onto the ground plane.
>キャラの向きのパースにつられて、地面の凹凸や草を斜めに配置してしまいです。これで地面が傾いて見えます。
here we put down the characters first and aligned the perspective with the characters. The ground plane "bumpiness" and grass layout will end up look tilted. The end result is that the entire ground plane looks tilted.

What an interesting page. I've never seen a western book talk about stuff like this. Basically, if you are laying out a ground plane of grass or natural features, with no vanishing lines, it's best to set it up first in one point perpsective. If you do 2 poitn perspective, everything can look tilted and diagonal.

For that kind of shot, I do think the vanishing points are pretty close. This will create ambiguity and distortion in the illustration. That’s why I suggest reconceptualizing the shot in 1vp ,it makes it easier for the viewer.

Something many people forget is that different objects will have different vanishing points. What really matters is the horizon line.

I guess so, it looked like it was inside the cone of vision when i eyeballed it, but when i checked it its well outside of it
>the horizon line
The vanishing points aren't aligned, that's why the ground is titled btw
>>
>>7403786
I would recommend mainly working on construction and measuring at this point, less on color/rendering
>>
>>7403788
I eyeballed too, I took for granted that the HL was flat on the x axis.

Now if you try recreate the O good one, you take the left vp and move it to the center and what happens is that the right vp will move almost to infinity making the guide lines parallel to the HL, this distance is way larger than the original thats what I mean they are too close for me in that shot.

The video I posted give suggestions on which "perspective" to use based on the scene.
>>
>>7403789
what do you reccomend?
>>
>>
>>7403795
while I haven't taken any courses myself, through watching drawing demos on YouTube here and there, I feel like video content is generally more useful than reading; thought it depends on the video creator and writer. just look around - whether on here or on another platform - for a beginner course which includes construction. or, if you prefer, look for a book with that same info (and perhaps more). I went through Keys to Drawing, which I found very useful, but it's more explicitly directed at trad artists (which I am). though you could in principle apply the ideas to digital.
>>
>>7403788
The vanishing points are fine, I don't know how you managed to fuck that up. And it's well within the cone of vision, because this is a 3-p comp.
>>
>>7403793
That's complete nonsense. What you just described has nothing to do with the distance between vanishing points. The FOV does not change just because you rotated the camera.

Anon, I am telling you this honestly: Boxes are the ultimate /beg/trap. Just try to copy artists you like. You will improve 10x faster than trying to stuff a human torso into a box with the added bonus of drawing stuff you like
>>
>>7403830
this anon is right >>7403843

copying artwork, memorizing shapes, finding a style that works for you, all of that is the best stuff you could do to improve

recommended routine:
1. 1 hour copying art you like
2. 1 hour copying photos that appeal to you (check the model pack thread)
3. 1 hour drawing from imagination

>>
>>7403858
a few points here

1. I think it's important to be able to modulate between flat and solid art, if you wanna have any flexibility in what you draw
2. I never said form wasn't important, just not something you should spend your time practicing. You can learn it just by copying very solid art. On the other hand, you will never develop solid looking art if all you practice is "theorycrafting", aka boxes. You cannot theory yourself into good drawing, it can only come from observation
3. proportions are king. if you can put things in the right place, wtih the right shape, the right contours, the right angles, your art will look far better than someone who has solid draftsmenship but unappealing shapes.

I make sketches to give my posts a bit of validity, but I'm not saying I"m the greatest artist either. There are probably over a hundred people on this board who can draw better than me. this isn't meant to be ego-posting, just an honest discussion on art

There is a lot of shit in drawing that only clicks once you already kinda-somewhat-more-or-less understand the subject matter unconsciously.
Boxes are pointless until you "get" the human anatomy at least on mid-beg level.
Draw AT LEAST 100 figures first, while actually studying human anatomy you are drawing.

1. That's irrelevant to beginners
2. That's irrelevant to beginners
3. That's irrelevant to beginners

I mention the quality of your sketch because it clearly isn't benefiting from your lack of perspective and form practice. Your figures are stiff, paper thin, and despite all, they're not even that appealing. Who are you to say what is or isn't worth learning, when it isn't even really working for you.
>>

>>
>>7403852
not that anon but just copying art and just drawing for fun (so if they hate boxes, not boxes) is a good way for brand new begs to just get into drawing regularly. then the fundies grind begins
>>
>>7403926
Yes, *but* that wasn't the question being asked, nor the answer being disputed.

Of course you should draw for fun, that's how Loomis does it, that's even how DAB does it. But you can't *only* do that. You will not improve unless you make a conscious effort to do better. And you cannot improve by copying and observing if you lack the analytical framework to create robust solutions to problems. It's not helpful to learn how to draw a face in a certain style at a certain angle, unless you can reverse engineer it and explain to yourself why it looks the way it does. Actually learn how to do math, don't just memorize your times tables.

You're just drawing squares all day and thinking that is gonna make you a better artists. You already plateaud any gains you'd make by doing that.

>I don't understand how this box shit is supposed to take my drawings to the next level
Basically, there are two things that you need to make a good figure drawing: Gesture and Structure. (Pic related is me trying an example of each)

What boxes help is to get a simple structure in place, but the thing is: Your boxes aren't good enough yet for this job. The structure needs to be simple and characteristic.

A good exercise to make you understand is to take some of your favorite artists or some really good artists (like Michelangelo) and trace over their figures with boxes.
Also, I am parroting Steve Huston here, so go look up his teaching and book.

>>7403847
While studying art is important, if copying is all you do for study, you will get better at copying, not drawing.

Also what the fuck is up with the verification????
>>
>>7403996
True, however, I don't do it just to be an asshole.

Lesson One is: Be wary of those who give advice.
More often than not, they're just spouting bullshit to justify their own bad decisions. Look at their results. If it didn't work for them, it's probably not going to work for you, either. This board is full of misquoted, misinterpreted, and straight up malicious advice, don't take anyone here seriously unless their work is rock solid, not just better than you, better than you could ever hope to be.

Lesson Two is: Know thyself. Know where you stand and don't think you have all the answers. The volumes you can write about topic aren't correlated with actually knowing what you're talking about. Don't trick yourself into believing you're the shit, because you're probably not.
>>
>>7404278
anon... while i agree with most of what you're saying does it not apply to you too?
>don't take anyone here seriously unless their work is rock solid, not just better than you, better than you could ever hope to be.
this is also a very high bar, i don't think i would have improved at all if i didn't listen to anons shilling morpho/loomis/whatever on here. ultimately you could also just post your advice too, people can choose whether they want to listen to you as well
>>
>>7404285
Yes it does. You shouldn't believe everything I say. Nor Bridgeman, nor Han, no one's word is god. But it might hold a little more weight.

And that's the thing though. Shill Morpho, shill Loomis, whatever. But actually read the books, don't just take on faith what anon tells you about them. Anon likely didn't even read them.

And no, posting competing advice really doesn't work. This is 4chan, over half the people here believe in some kind of dumb ass conspiracy theory. At the end of the day, they're not going to follow the advice that looks the most helpful. They follow the advice that agrees with whatever they already wanted to do.

Lighting looks good. I’m not really into this style of rendering so I can’t say anything there
>>
>>7404777
Don't start with the face. Start with the bigger shapes. Then down to the smaller shapes.

Take a step back and look at the shapes you are drawing compared to your reference. They are whack. But it's expected when you are starting

Turn the drawing 90° and/or upside down. Compare your drawing to it. Can you see the mistakes?

Copy it once. Try to analyze it well, then copy it again.

I keep wondering too, is getting better more about the volume? I:E getting out more drawings?

A bunch of references.

Analyze your reference by color picking and see how the hue, intensity and value change in one area in relation to another for your desired lighting scenario. Try then to manually pick the color for your image and check after that how far you were off.
Even if your reference has different colors than your image, you can still pull out a lot of information about by how much you want to change hue, intensity and value to achieve a similar look. You just have to apply that to your own colors in your drawing.

I hope this makes sense to you. I'm probably wording this not very good

I think a big step in order to get better at coloring is to understand how important the color gray is. Watch this video: https://youtu.be/21mPduQsm1g
This dude's channel has a few great videos on color and light btw.

My early works were way too saturated and bright. This dude fixed that, I think.

There are other websites for interacting with people beyond 4chan and Reddit (and Twitter, insta and Tumblr fit that matter), but I guess you don't go there either. But 4chan is not a democracy. We are anarchy where EVERYBODY, yes even (You), have the power to make the next general. So instead of complaining now go, fire up that photoshop, make new OP pic and post it in new /BEG.

Drawing one Makima every day for the month of December to see how much I can improve
Day 18: Tried a full side profile, and it really made my lack of experience with drawing fabric folds and bodies evident. Face is also slightly off I feel, but my faces are certainly far better than my nonexistant bodywork.
on another note, I felt so inspired today that I actually took some time to draw something that isn't makima. Maybe its a sign that drawing is becoming more of a hobby.
>>
>>7406655
anon I know I asked for a side profile but who the fuck were you using as a reference. makima does NOT have a nose like that!! Good effort nonetheless.
>>
What 3d model programs do you use?

I was using this one, and idk why I made it harder on myself by reversing her direction.
I'm getting filtered by needing to actually draw a nose for once kek

Why would you think there is something wrong with models? There are mannequins specifically made for artists.

Can anyone help me understand why my faces always come out incorrectly? It's like every single head I do is too wide or too long or too short, I can never seem to get a consistent face. I've been drawing for a year now and I'm frankly embarrassed at how I still can't do consistently good faces

pic rel is my process
