I've had success with audiences from different cultures but taking it to the professional level means I need to draw good way more consistently.

You're over-referencing 3d models, which makes your posing and art sterile.
You should try to make the gesture more dynamic and the anatomy more organic in order to fix that.

tl;dr You need more mileage in order to internalize these concepts so that you don't depend on refs so much.
>>

>>
>>7768121
>no context

>>
>>7768116
Not really, just don't focus only on observing digital 3d models. Try also doing studies by referencing actual people. Just find body types that are similar to the proportions you're looking for (lean models) and do very quick croquis drawings where you focus more on the dynamicity of the poses. Your stuff is already very good, you just need to make your posing a tad more exaggerated and your anatomy a bit more life-like and organic, so that you don't end up with stiff dolls.

Your art has appeal (nice faces and convincing lines), you just need more mileage imo. You're definitely on the right track.
>>
some anons are just unable a context

>>7768110

Drafted this up from memory. Prompt is old thick woman cosplaying as evil bitch hag like from those sentai parodies or mahou shoujos. Anyone know what kind of character I am talking about? How to make a military-esque suit that is also slutty?
I think the only example I could pull out was Black General but she isnt old and is instead quite retarded.
I wanted to go for something more dynamic and less stiff looking but I think I fucked up somewhere. I will try to fix it up and continue through the week.
>I think I made the torso too small.
>Dont know how to draw or connect the motherfucking head.
>Want to go for a more detailed face like that bitch from Reincarnation Colosseum (Zayd) her fucking face and cowtits make me see red.

this is the only okay thing i’ve ever drawn and it took me ~8? hours to do and it’s still shit. i fucking hate this shit man. i don’t even want to be drawing this stuff, i want to be drawing characters and people and anatomy and whatever but god i suck so bad at thatttttttt.
it’s like this awful cycle where i want to draw people and stuff, so i try to do that and it turns out shit and i hate it and it sucks the fun out of drawing. then i try to learn the basics/fundamentals so i can better draw characters and i do learn more-ish but i can never manage to apply it to my actual drawings cuz i’m still super shit, plus it’s just a huge chore and sucks the fun right out of drawing too. so i try to draw people-shaped things again and, nope.
does it ever get better? i want to quit.

these are some of the “people” i’ve drawn. each individual one took me 30mins, i’m not even joking. i take too long to draw nothing because if it doesn’t look good enough then i hate it and don’t enjoy it. idk how to get over it because that’s kinda baked into my personality and entire existence. i really really want to be able to draw well but idk how to stay motivated when this is the slop i produce. “just enjoy the journey” i can’t.

It's your observation skill. Your references are a step too high for you to climb it seems. I'm assuming they are photographs in color you find on the internet. It's just too much uncharted territory your brain has to do. The color is causing you friction to correctly assess the values, you having to recognize the shapes is causing you friction, you having to translate the shapes and abstrahize them into lines is causing you friction.

I suggest you do master studies and use pencil portraits from skilled (no hyper realistic) artists as reference, they already did all of the heavy lifting of abstracting and simplifying and you get to learn at a level you can handle. Try to go for achievable references first and climb upwards from there.

old masters from the renaissance era usually have a plethora of pencil sketches. pic rel is da vinci f.e.
other than that the net is filled with pencil studies of celebrities and other prominent people, like elvis presley or marilyn monroe. Having acces to the original reference also lets you compare and understand the transformation from photo picture to drawing better.

okay trace it then it's okay if you only get the major lines right and not the shading
afterwards use both the original reference and your tracing as a reference and draw it again freehand.

you drew the line while tracing therefore it is within your means to draw the line you traced freehand. your goal is to get 80% there. Also it's okay to just do an area of the drawing if the whole thing is too much

Why does all turns out like this?
>>
I recently got into a small local art contest. Among 100+ people who voted there wasn't a single person who liked my art. The second to last place got like 8 votes btw. It's kind of an achievement in on itself, huh. I didn't even draw anything repulsive or out-right ugly or any coomer shit or anything like that. There were prebeg works who placed higher. The kind of prebeg if you saw on /ic/ you'd think a person drew it horribly on purpose just to troll. I sincerely drew something I cared for and put a lot of work and not a single human being was touched by it. I think I just lack soul, I am fundamentally less human than others, that's why nothing I draw ever connects with anyone. I am soulles. No studies will ever fix that.
>>
>>7769057
I guess im esling

Basically leg height should be equal to head + torso. Ofc you can fuck around with that and have it looks fine, for exemple sexy girls are often drawn with longers legs. Just look at tall characters or picture of irl people and try to find a leg to body ratio that you like.
>>
>>7768974
Nonsense!!! Never, ever trace. Only people without talent trace. You will never be a true artist if you trace.

I'm sure you are just being tongue in cheek, but this pathological aversion to tracing during a study for complete prebegs is legit hindering their progress. The whole point of tracing is basically to get them to understand how and why the lines are placed like that by the original artist which just doesn't compute at all with some people when they merely side by side copy instead of trace the study at first.

They should develop observational skills. Tracing is going to fuck them up hard in the long run. They should give up if they can't develop their observational skills or just become specialized artists. I developed observational skills as a kid because I hated tracing(not because it was wrong but because it felt like I was cheating myself). Am sure most actual artists can relate.

Is there any way to force motivation or enthusiasm? I'm clinically depressed (actually diagnosed), tried multiple meds and they unfortunately don't do shit. I was hoping that actually getting myself to do something creative would somehow help me break through the slump, and I've always found drawing cool even if I couldn't stick to it myself, but I just don't know what to draw. It'd be cool to have some projects to work towards. But I also don't know how I'm even supposed to get through the initial "everything sucks" stages when I'm like this, and just grinding fundies without any goals made me burn out multiple times.

Discipline comes first, motivation will come later, so get a routine and stick to it. I've struggled with mental health problems, including clinical depression, and while the path that I took to where I am now is definitely not one I'd recommend to anyone I can say that having a consistent routine will help a lot. Motivation without action is just wishful thinking, though reframing the way you think about things will help too

The problem I have is that simply grinding lines/figures/boxed is mind-numbing and not in a good way. But I know it is necessary, since when simply trying to draw something I'm remotely interested in (which is usually video game characters, I know, I'm addicted) has the resulting drawing making me retch from just how fundamentally bad it is. I've heard multiple times that having a project to work on is really helpful with restructuring towards a growth mindset and incremental improvement (draw, identify flaws, do dedicated studies instead of vague fundies). But I don't know what would constitute a good project (sufficiently challenging but not so hard as to be discouraging) at such an incredibly early stage and low skill.

I do agree that hands and faces are often the focal points of a drawing. I've seen much artwork where the overall anatomy was lackluster, but the well-drawn hands/head evelated the appeal. at the same time, I think the corrections you've made only improve the figure marginally. we're not seeing the forest for the trees. there's something more fundamental my drawings are missing. I can only hope that one day a stray /int/ gives me the breakthrough advice I need, or whispers a sleeper agent code word into my ear that will unlock my innate drawing ability

Yeah I think the project stuff you describe might be the way to go.

When I started trying to learn fundamentals seriously back in August I didn't think of doing anything in particular when trying to learn perspective, but after hearing a certain tip in a video about it and doing a study on a manga panel I liked then it kinda clicked and became fun. I'm sure you'd have to do the same for lines/figures/boxes, find some artwork with those specific elements that you like and learn from them.

None at all since I don't have any, It's been 2 fuckin week since I had a subject I wanted to do, got a lot of free time to blame it on a tight schedule too.

If I don't actively work to find compelling drawings to study from I end up doodling circles or doing pointless shading lines.

I have a rather complicated answer to this question.
1) I've already committed to using this brush. I believe it's possible to make good drawings regardless of the tools one uses. I myself don't quite like the brush I'm working with, but I feel like if I master this one, adapting any other brush would be easier.
2) I'm aware that the lack of line weight is holding my drawings back a lot. the reason I still keep it off is twofold. I've seen other artists pull it off. I can't understand line weight. I managed without it for so long, I got used to uniform lines, and picking a more dynamic brush sets me two steps back. it's very demotivating. it's hard for me to control pressure too.
3) drawing apps have hundreds of brushes to choose from, and a hundred ways to edit them. I get decision fatigue. how does one choose their brushes? how do I know when\where to use, say, 'pencil-2H' \ 'watercolor-dry-smudge-2' \ 'coarse-bulk-3'? I don't even know what half of the brush settings do, even after tinkering with them.

tl;dr I'm autistic
>>
>>7769652
your figures are good, the poses are dynamic and interesting. The camera angle however is meh, your camera angle can come from any point in 3d space not just face height pov
>>
>>7769775
thanks. I plan to tackle interesting angles once I'm comfortable drawing in flat perspective
>>
>>7769774
>it's possible to make good drawings regardless of the tools one uses
this doesn't say much.
>>
>>7769747
Any other recommendations on courses
>>
>>7769774
I am also this autistic and I hate switching brushes, so what I did is copy the same brush but at set pixel thicknesses, and just label them as Comic Brush (12px) Comic Brush (20px) Comic Brush (32px) so it helps me keep the same brush but add versatility to my lines
>>
>>7769787
by that I mean, it's possible to make a good drawing with just the basic brush I use
>>7769791
that's neat. how do you decide when to use a thicker/thinner brush? can you post something of yours? I'm interested

i'd say it's the common method of sketch - > lineart (optional) - > masking - > rendering - > overpaint (hair strands and details). whether they paint light or shadow probably depends. the leftmost one is just more refined than the others and includes the lineart step

Arm farthest away looks like it's missing a line that was on the lighter sketch, hand needs more volume (bent finger segements are missing...) part between closest arm and coat needs clarification...

What the fuck is with the obsession with "workflow"? What is that? Like sketch composition to lineart? I keep seeing it.

Ribcage line might be too pronounced if you're gonna have that amount of fat on the chest methinks. Right eye feels to far away since the head is angled slightly off-center. Think about the bridge of the nose and the part you rub when your allergies are kicking your ass. Depending on what your preferred style is, the neck could be too thin. The collar bone has to attack to the top of the shoulder, so you should angle the unconnected right-most line a bit downwards... Left arm could be too long; the elbow should come to be at the same length as the bottom of the ribcage? Hard to explain, but our range of motion is a circle...

Question, does drawing while lying in bed or even drawing with a sketchbook in my lap affect my ability to draw well or even practice/improve the way I draw?
I ask this because I've been bedridden from getting injured from sports and I am wondering if drawing in bed will be a positive or if I should forget about it because it's an overall negative.

need advice with the the gold hand, basically, the original illustration of the character has a robotic hand, but it wasn't that detailed so I had to just make something up. Well I don't think it's a mind blowing tip so I didn't bother elaborating, but it was about imagining the piece of paper is a window and to think of the shapes you're drawing as something you could actually see existing.

I think now it might be so obvious, but I guess it helped because prior to that seeing an empty white page felt bad and I was drawing boxes at random with zero thought behind them. I think it was brokendraw on Youtube, can't remember exactly which video.

Yeah Blame's art is amazing. The original panel still mogs my 2 hour shit hard, I failed to "see" the gradient and it makes my study appear way too bright, the large pipe is also deprived of its brightness because of that.

Never attempted a study about backgrounds before because I couldn't grasp perspective at all, and this one turned out ok but rushed due to excitement.
