Attention! The ghost of Glenn Vilppu haunts this thread. Yeah I know he's alive, don't ask me how this shit works.

If you are a /beg/inner in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
DO NOT REPLY to crabs, nodraws, over-analyzing schizos, retards that whine about how hard drawing is or talent debates and instead focus on posted works!

Where do i even begin? What should be the learning process/curve/steps?
Please bear with me. I'm a retard near-npc who only learns when forced to learn or being in a class.
Does anyone have any video courses that they'd recommend? Preferably ones available in the course general
If not, any good books that hold can hold a retard's hand through the process?

I've been drawing for a few months now but in short sessions and most of it is doodling. I'd really love to change that but anytime i want to do a structured learning session or plan i get really confused as to where to start and just go back to drawing random things i find

Cool drawing. Don't listen to the faggots. I think you could stand to simplify the detail down for now. Theres an inherent 'ugliness' to hyperdetail on a cartoon. I think that's cool sometimes but it might not be what you're going for

I’m doing https://daromeon.itch.io/cube and also pulling up random cubes in CSP and tracing one plane and then hiding the rest of the cube and trying to recreate it, basically the same thing as the browser game but I give myself more time. Art is for life, kid, you will always be young enough and as long as you keep drawing it will always be enough.

If you want something to keep yourself focused try to have a long term project you want to have enough skill to accomplish. Game, comic, or illustrated book, I don't know. This should give you a thing to works towards instead of aimless just trying to improve without a clear goal and give you focus.

How to stop symbol drawing faces? I want my faces to look 3d and appealing but they come out like this.

Draw from life.

>>8027005
Drawing things the way you think they look instead of how they actually do
>>
>>8026959
Your biggest issue is the lack of overlap, and the folds and joins you drew don’t read well. Focus on creating depth by using overlapping shapes.

>>8027004
The more stylized you draw, the more symbolic your drawings will become. That’s just how it is, so you’ll have to come to terms with how much realism you want in your art. The easiest way to figure this out is to look at art you like, find something that satisfies your preferences, and start studying it.

Im having trouble figuring out the perspective for this. Im trying my hand at some basic landscaping, its supposed to be a castle/ruins on a cliff that's overlooking the ocean, and some clouds. >look 3d and appealing
>anime
Pick one and only one.

>stop symbol drawing
You need to start using better symbols like they do in anime.
Start tracing from anime settei and pro illustrators and learn what they're doing to make their faces look good.
>>
Symbol drawing has zero meaning outside of a copy. Anything that is not a copy is a symbol drawing by definition.
>>
>>8027035
Anything 2D lineart based is symbol based. Western art just has had really crude symbols for a long time now (or just styles with no lineart at all) so people aren't used to seeing the full subtlety of anime symbols.
You can train your brain to see anime as it is though.

What do you think? Can you still sense volume when the rough sketch isn't visible? The problem I'm trying to solve is that when I do the line art, I lose volumetric/spatial legibility. In simple terms, the line art looks flat. But with this new way of thinking about line, I think I'm achieving what I'm looking for, at least on a basic level. Then I would just have to apply the concept of "exaggeration" to saturate the figure with more volume (curving the appropriate edges more, like the skirt; a simple transformation would make the buttocks feel more volumetric). Of course, all this without using shading, not even the basic kind that uses a single tone. My reference artist achieves line art rich in volume, and that's what I'm trying to copy. By the way, I'd like recommendations for other artists whose line art you feel communicates the volume of the surface without using shading...

is this drawing a copy or your own? if it's the former what's the ref
>>
If it helps anyone else, I also eliminated what in my system/process would be the clean sketch phase; it comes after the rough sketch phase and before the line art phase...

>>8027098
They would have taken time away from other parts; the sketch and line art were simply there to prove my theory. I know for sure that I needed to draw the fingers; now that I think about it, it would have been enough to just indicate them...

It's my own drawing. The pose is also generic, easy to remember and execute...

Unironically watch that one pikat video about heads/faces.
Also loomis.
Drawing from life should help you sort of *visualize* how the mouth or the eyes should wrap around the face, and where they should be placed to give the impression of being tridimensional.
Do use 3D models too. Don't trace. Observe carefully and draw them, write notes, etc.

Is there that much of a difference between drawing from life and copying? I get that there are some differences because when drawing from life you can look at what you're drawing from different angles so you can't just 1:1 copy the 2D projection as easily, but how big of a difference is that. I think I've drawn like 1 thing from life, everything else is either copied or from imagination, but maybe I should do more life drawings.
>>
>>8027452
It is mostly theoretical because drawing from life is not something I ever do, but it probably creates a better connection between the lines you do and the 3D object they represent, compared to just reproducing a flat contour.
>>
>>8027445

Any figure drawing quicker than 15 minutes is beyond worthless. All you do is shitting out a lot of bad figures. Rapid firing mistakes. There's no learning happening at all. If anything it makes you worse for forcing you to commit lots of mistakes and reinforce bad habits in quick succession without any time to think over and fix.
>>
>>8027461
It is a memory thing. People with god memory are like sponges for learning, so they can spam fast drawings and retain a lot more. Of course, many become teachers and think anyone can do the same.

The average retard NEEDS to put in more time, correct mistakes, and then do it again and again.

Drawing from life is much more difficult and you will improve much faster. It is a massive difference. The same way looking at a picture of a fish is much different than going to a pet store and seeing one. Yes, do more life drawings, you’ll thank yourself in the long run.

I've been very stagnant in my progress and noticed that I spend a lot of time looking up and down and my paper and the subject, so the entire drawing process has felt very disjointed. That's totally fine. It doesn't need to be great for now and it doesn't need to be something you always draw, it just needs to be a safety net for when you don't know what to draw or don't feel like drawing.

I guess my point is that I think drawing every day makes a difference. If you can draw things you don't particularly love and still keep a daily drawing routine then it probably doesn't matter though. If not, then finding something you can draw every day would probably do you good.

Don't stress. A project is never easy, and the scope is always bigger than you initially planned. Start with just a simple page, screen, or scene, depending on what you're working on. It doesn't matter how crude it looks, just start. Later, it becomes easier once you know what the actual work is going to be.

The changes between version 1 and the final release are going to be huge, so it's better to have something that looks crude but actually finish every phase than to spend too much time trying to make each phase perfect.

>>8028151
> I'm having fun and that's all that matters.
based, keep going

>>8028176
Old movies in black and white had to focus more on the composition of each scene because they couldn't have multiple cameras shooting from multiple angles. They also had to make sure the values made the scene readable. Besides that, Creative Illustration by Loomis is his best book, and it talks a lot about composition.

Where do you find or make "art friends"? Is it easier on twitter or bluesky? maybe even instagram?

I assume you need at least to get people to see your posts, so i guess this can double as a question about the easiest website to get exposure on for art.

I'm /beg/ and had artists want to share contacts with me, because they liked the style. Then you talk about Bridgman or whatever.

You meet friends like you meet friends in other contexts, just that art friends specifically want you to be a proper artist at about their level or better.

I could probably make the buster part a bit wider, ill have to play around with it a bit and see if I can correct that.

drew Linne, today I looked into limb shapes. Im not happy with her sword arm, but i think the shape of the thighs and calves looks ok, I really need to look in to how to actually draw faces, and perspective is going to be fun to study once I actually study it.

In this instance, shape design refers purely to deciding the shape of the light and shadow side of the figure before doing any kind of rendering. OP was already adding too much gradients, hence "too much painting." It looked vague and messy.
Paint hard first, then soften where needed.

It'll help with construction, perspective, and will probably help improve your linework, which are skills that carry over to anything else you draw.
You'd still have to learn other skills (like anatomy if you wanted to draw people), but eh, the broader point is if you want to draw buildings, you will pick-up useful skills in doing so.
Incidentally, I saw a dude on youtube who could draw the most detailed and intense cityscapes you've ever seen... but by his own admission, he couldn't draw a face to save his life. That's because drawing cities and vehicles is THE thing he cared about doing, he didn't care about drawing people.

Today I started on my "big project". Had to give up right at the start. No where near the skill level required.
Instead a daily drawing. And a burning desire to end my mediocrity and level up.

Hand studies, torso studies, legs, skull, motion. Painting. I'm done with "just draw" /beg/ limbo. Time to take the hobby seriously. Time permitting (cut into sleep? No. Something has to give).

I'm plateauing at an ugly level that I should leave behind ASAP.

Trying to learn to do some of these environment sketches. When I look at them, I feel like "so cool... and it seems simple enough to do!"... Nope. Dealing with such small-scale, city planning, building style and details, even if they mostly cube-shaped here and there, it is tough, especially in trad.

I feel like I struggle with any detail, so maybe I need more mileage on drawing isolated walls, houses, textures, and medieval/fantasy shapes before attempting this. Even details such as trees and foliage at a distance are a struggle because I have no visual memory.

I imagine if the artist used a ruler, even though it seems mostly freehanded.

I wanted to use my drawings to share my ideas with others, to create what I knew was beautiful. The crabs mocked me until I couldn't stand it anymore. They claim that drawing is all down to talent, but that isn't so. Sometimes grinding exercises is warranted and right. Sometimes you improve because of it. Any failure to get the results I want is due to a lack of skill on my part. That can change, in time.

But my creativity has not diminished, nor my desire to tell stories with my art. The more time I spend drawing boxes, the more I am certain that one day I will be able to draw as I must.
