Sure, but it's nothing inherently to do with language learning itself, it's just the act of succeeding at what you set out to do that actually helps. It doesn't matter what it is, as long as you care about the goal, work towards it and see yourself progressing.

If you're not learning at least 50 words a day you are a LOSER.

It's almost impossible to study for longer than an hour each day if you strictly follow the recommended SRS daily number of new cards which is around 20. If you are studying a language like French, Spanish, or German with similar words to English you can double or triple that and still not spend an unreasonable amount of time.

Do people seriously believe that you can only retain 20 new pieces of information each day? You can easily boost that number up to 80 or 120 and still retain all of it if you actually put in the time. Studying for 6 hours a day used to be a normal thing.

Language learners have become so lazy that it's pathetic just to look at them. 2+ years reviewing shit at the pace of a fucking snail and they still can barely read things written for children. You will never succeed. You need to know at least 10,000 words. You should be able to get there in under a year. Stop wasting time on the internet, etc and take something seriously for once in your life.

One of the main reasons I quit reddit is every language sub is filled with people asking about apps. Which app is best. Zero moderation.

Something awful would ban you for 3 days for being retarded. No such modding on reddit.

On top of that, zero posts like yours. The only people who respond are other beginners who give their beginner opinion on beginner ideas and keep everyone in beginner land.

I got banned from the Korean sub for telling some kid to 'figure it out' like I was being 'mean'. No, genius. Figuring it out is the process itself. Banned. But if I made another thread asking what everyone thinks about duolinguo, I'd be met with tons of replies.

People have forgotten how to study.
>>

People are just too obsessed with optimizing everything to reach 100% efficiency right away.
>>
>>201300316
>and learned 300 new words today
no you didn't
280 of them will be forgotten by tomorrow
>>
>>201301270
I blame the idea that Apps 'teach' you anything. The most efficient way to learn is to just read a book. You'll get the densest amount of information given to you in context that you have to return to repeatedly. Duolinguo is cool to let you listen to the phonics of a language, but if you are using an app instead of just opening a book and figuring it out, you are lost.

This doesn't mean I would like you to ignore grammatical mistakes per se, just that I would like to use the grammar that an old hick would use.

After a long time, I slept deeply. Suddenly, I was awakened by a loud noise, and I got up. I dressed in my slippers and went to the bathroom, where I took a shower, first with warm water, then with cold water. I washed myself with soap and put on a clean shirt. Then I got dressed completely and combed my hair. When that was done, I brushed my teeth carefully with toothpaste. Then I went to have breakfast, where I ate bread, butter, jam, and drank milk. Afterward, I got ready to go out. In the closet, I chose a hat, a coat, a tie, and gloves. My bag was packed with the necessary items, including papers, pens, and books. I put on my coat and went out

French right? I learned to read german first with almost no audio input, and I fixed the problem by switching to inputting primarily via listening. Would listen to about an hour a day. Over a year or two it fixed the issue.
>>
>>201316881
Yeah French
My problem is that I can listen and it feels very natural, the meaning just flows into my head assuming they're speaking slowly enough
When I read the only way I can force myself to do this is by reading aloud but it's just too slow and I'm constantly focusing on pronunciation and if I read for speed I'm either reading without subvocalising or I'm translating words in my head effortlessly
I'm seriously thinking of just switching to audiobooks at this point and going all in on audio input

Did you ever manage to get your reading speed back up? I figure I need to just stop reading and rebuild my foundations
Did you find that your ability to output improved?

Imo you need to put yourself in a situation where you are actually using the language, which for both of us is easier said than done unfortunately. The longer I am it, the more I think their is a sort of plateau as a self-learner, at least concerning speaking.

One thing you could try, since I know you read Harry Potter, is re-read the first book with the audio book playing along. Might help you sync up the meaning of the words to their sounds. I sort of did something similar with a german news site that provided a transcript for the audio and felt like it helped a lot. Maybe go through it once like that and then listen to it back with no book a second time. Could also just pick a chapter or two.

Interesting graphic. Makes sense that French has more speakers but is less represented online. I'd imagine large parts of francophone afrika are still largely without internet or at the least underserved.
Also, interesting that Germans are overrepresented. I know they are way overrepresented on Wiki. I think they are the second most represented nation in terms of editors after the US.

I just started learning german and I'd like to learn to pronounce properly early. Vowels, consonants, diptongs and umlauts aren't too difficult, but I can't seem to find any rules to separate words in syllables, does anyone know about it?

I speak spanish and the way spanish works is that you can learn how to pronounce all syllables and with some accentuation rules you will be able to pronounce any written word, idk if you can do that in german.
>>
>>201331403
>>201313989
Yep. I believe that at the very beginning you should focus only on speaking and only after that A2 level learn to write and read or learn everything with notes in IPA. Most pronunciation problems in English are persistent errors resulting from mixing Polish and English orthography.
>>
>>201331257
no problem, lol. I realize it's quite an ask. Wasn't sure if there was maybe some téléroman in a rural setting popular enough to be known in Europe that European french speakers might get some exposure to older Canadian French through.
>>
>>201332122
You can read from day 1. Only retards here pronounce English words incorrectly and mix the orthography of both languages.
>>

>>
>>201331403
afaik, syllabification in German is similar to English: when divvying up consonants between syllables attempt to divide them evenly, but favor giving them to the following syllable when there are an odd number of consonants, and don't let any unpronounceable clusters arise (for example the made-up word 'Aftpa' could not be syllabified as 'Af-tpa', only as 'Aft-pa', can't start syllables with two plosives).
Keep in mind that consonant digraphs/trigaphs should still be treated as one consonant, so 'sch' is one consonant and can't be split up (unless it is a fake 'sch' from a compound word where the first word ends in 's' and the next one begins with 'ch').

When you encounter a compound word, this rule is broken; syllables are divided along the boundaries of the two words:
Mit-tag-es-sen rather than Mit-ta-ges-sen (normally we would favor giving the g to the following syllable).
Because German favors hard attack, this difference is noticeable; the first syllable of 'essen' cannot begin with a phonetic vowel, so a glottal stop is inserted [mItak?Esn] (excuse the ghetto IPA, the question mark is a glottal stop).
>>
>>201333776

Respected so much by their "allies" that they willingly sacrificed them for a war plan that did not work out.
Then those allies went on and just handed over the Poles to Stalin, which led to Poland being behind Western European countries by a generation.
What happened to the people who declared war on the Poles back then? They received top positions in important organizations of Poland's greatest ally.

Tuviera is best translated as "Had"

Tuviese is fancier language, and tranlated as " would have"

as in If I would have, or If I had.

I don't know how I know this, that's just how my intuition translated it from understanding English as a second language. though I'm not sure about Spanish grammar.

So now you know. If I had, If I would have. Si tuviera que... Si tuviese que...

Tengo el cabello/pelo cafe
mi hermano Josue se murio ( murio or esta muerto are fine, esta muerto translates to is dying and is an Anglicism)
Martin maneja su carro ( again, choice of words and intuition you could even say auto or automobil)
correct donde estan mis pastillas

Esta, because la camisa is feminine.
esta es mi camiseta (because its a T shirt not a dress shirt) de Deadpool

again, another use of se instead of estar. Ella se caso con el. Ella esta casada con el. you do not use a to say to him. its with him.

Podriamos is better translated as can in this instance. if you want to say might you say Puede que which also translates as could we

Puede que empecemos un canal de Youtube

This is completely wrong, you might want to start with is, thence esta desaparecida tu familia? in that order to sound rational. and its Piensalo.

El Gobierno sigue acosandome. / todavia me acosa

hueles bien/hueles bonito. you keep this expression polite and again avoid an anglicism

>Martin is driving his car.
>Martin fuhrt ihn Auto.
Martin fährt (sein) Auto. / Martin fährt mit dem/seinem Auto.
>fahren; er fährt; er fuhr; er ist gefahren - to drive
this is an irregular Germanic conjugation so you have to remember the changing stem
>führen; er führt; er führte; er hat geführt - to lead; (formal) to operate a vehicle
this is a regular conjugation
>Martin führt sein Auto. ~ Martin operates his vehicle.
would also make sense, but a quite formal use. but this it's why it's "der Führerschein" and not "der Fahrerschein" like in English.
>This is my Deadpool shirt.
>Das ist mein *Deadpoolsches Shirt. ~ This is my Deadpoolish/Deadpoolean shirt. / This is my "shirt of Deadpool".
this is understandable but when used with a proper noun or name it turns it into an adjective. this is often used for things that are named for a person or inventor, e.g.
>Euclid-ean geometry - Euklid-ische Geometrie
>Pythagor-ean triple - Pythagor-eisches Tripel
>Oort cloud - Oort-sche Wolke
so it sounds like it's a special shirt invented by or named for Deadpool. could be, but if it's just the same shirt Deadpool wears or it shows Deadpool on it, more usual and simple would be:
>Das ist mein Deadpool-Shirt. ~ This is my Deadpool shirt.
you can just make a compound noun the same way as in English, just without a space
>You smell so good.
>Sie riechen gut
fine but sounds very gentleman-like with "Sie". usually when flirting with someone you'd use "du".

good job

NTA but no, marrón is not used, he said cafe but you may also use pelo casteño, or pelo moreno, these are the most used in Spain, you'll be understood perfectly if you say cafe but idk if that is used at some latam countries or all over.
Also know that you can say someone is moreno, but that can mean both that they have brown skin, think arabs, indians latinos, or that they have brown hair. If you want to specify what is brown then say "él es moreno de piel" for skin or "él tiene pelo moreno" for hair.

My biggest problem rn is probably my lack of vocabulary. I have to memorize the most common words with their conjugation, especially irregular ones.
With Deadpool I tried to make a calque from the Polish language (but sounding-like German), it works similarly here, but I think we are less strict in this matter. Everyone complains about German grammar, especially about cases and word order, but so far I have no problem to understand it, just lack of knowledge, I can often translate sentences word for word and at worst it sounds unusual but understandable. I love grammatical cases and I believe I can master grammar with enough practice
