I can understand the gist of them with subtitles on, but it feels like cheating since I focus on the words that are similar to their English equivalents.I doubt I can get meaningful vocab or grammar acquisition this way, so I'm going to try again after a month or so.

People learn faster from a text where they understand 90% than from a text where they understand 50%

It's actually based since you can still hear and appreciate the original acting without having to read subtitles. The only thing that gets fully dubbed is media for children, but apparently that doesn't extend to chinese cartoons.

If you want the true Russian experience, you will start watching it like that. As for why they do it, it's a lot cheaper and faster. No worrying about lipsynching, not much acting needed, you don't even need different speakers.
