What are your experiences with watching content that's way above your level and re-watching over and over while looking up words until you can understand the whole thing? Was it a seemingly effective use of time?
>>216218736It works but it's boringI don't find it more useful than listening to similar content
Imagine getting to live in 1000 BC or something like that and inhabiting a world featuring around 15k languages
>>216219480the concept of distinct languages isn't really applicable back then. That is, you walk 20 miles and the language is slightly different, walk 40 more miles and it becomes slightly more different, etc.

Are there any entertaining/good russian speaking youtubers that arent natives? Seems like a good middleground between native level content (too fast and colloquial) and slow content aimed towards learners (too boring)
>>216207925 I meant the decline of cultural influence, not the number of sepakers. Samba, carnival in Rio, Tibia wars, World Cup, Ronaldinho, Cristiano Ronaldo's peak, Ai Se Eu Pego... there was also more about Portugal itself in Polish media I think. I have the impression that Lusophone world used to be more present in people's minds, then it faded away, and now it is slowly regaining its position.

How do I acquire low, internet neckbeard dialect equivalent of my TL (Jap)?
>>216218606Seriously thorn between choosing Chinese or Korean. On one hand Chinese is the current hype and it's easy to find non racist Chinese people to talk to, but I despise their content and there's nothing to CONSOOM that's worthwhile for me atm. On the other hand, I watch (and actually enjoy) much more Korean content without even trying, some of my favorite movies of all time are Korean...

>>216218736I wouldn't do it all the time but sure it's useful to do it every now and then.
>>216221219Probably by browsing 2chan and 5chan
>>216222968If you learn primarily by talking to people and you have a good ear for pitch you can learn chinese much faster than korean. The grammar is very simple and the vocabulary is very analytic, korean is the polar opposite. On the other hand if your learning process is reading-heavy or you have trouble with pitch then chinese will be harder. As for content, Chinese has the best classical literature of any country in the world IMO. It also has good historical tv dramas like romance of the three kingdoms. But for modern content Korean is better. I started learning Korean purely because of korean youtube, its much superior to western. The kdramas are also not all just rom-com slop like people think, there are a lot of well written high-art korean dramasAlso Chinese people tend to be more aggressive/rude but more open. Koreans tend to be very kind and polite and rarely get angry but can be a bit stuffy

I got a reminder on my calendar that I'd supposedly completed a year of learning French. I hadn't studied it because it filtered me out. Also, I feel like I'll be giving up German soon. What are some easy and worthwhile foreign languages to learn? Portuguese for extra free 0.5 of a language (Spanish) and a unique skill? Maybe Italian or French for glamour? But French has filtered me out twice already. I also want to low-key give Dutch a chance or start learning a Scandinavian language.

>>216243206You don't get the point. It may require less hours to get good, but that only matters if they person is going to do the hours.Blindly recommending easy languages is pointless if the learner does not care for them. It's just going to be a cycle of dabbling and zero progress. If that's what you want from language learning, then that's good.If not, you should actually just find and learn what you are passionate about, because ultimately that will be the easiest one for you :)

I feel like content where you're really interested in knowing whats being said, out of genuine interest in knowing whats being said (not just a desire for language learning) seems to be the biggest factor in speed of acquisition. chomsky and krashen seem to be right about this. When you have genuine curiosity regarding what you're hearing certain juices start to flow in the brain and levers get switched on. I think it activates natural subconscious acquisition mechanisms that don't get activated when you're simply studying dry content or purposefully 'learning' the language.I notice the weebs who watch anime and the idol-obsessed kpop girls are some of the most amazing language learners as long as they don't turn on NL subtitles
>>216259967believe me ive learned both and cantonese was way more fulfilling than mandarin. mainlanders are so god damn soulless.
I study Latin, modern French, Anglo-Norman French, Middle English, Anglo-Saxon/Old English, Python, C++, MATLAB, and Java.
>>216260403You're overthinking it. Theres no special brain juices involved. It's because those people consume an insane amount of content. Weebs and idol obsessed kpop girls will watch that shit 24 hours a day.
>>216260828I don't think so. I've been studying languages hard for multiple hours a day every day for the last year. I find that I simply retain things much better when its content I'm very curious about compared to more neutral content, even when time and effort spent are exactly the same.
>>216260828Good goy. Don't develop an interest in your target language's content, don't foster the naturally curious voice in your head pushing you to learn more. Just mindlessly consume content you hate and I'm sure one day you will be fluent. Don't forget to buy my book and my monthly membership!

>>216260403I think interesting content doesn't matter until you're upper intermediate. Up until then, you're not really able to enjoy content for itself because you're breaking down everything down into sentences and words, and you're going through it much slower and it's a different experience. Content is just a collection of sentences and the most important thing is that it's at your level, just enough cognitive load that you're growing but not too much that it's frustrating, just enough lookups that you're increasing your vocabulary but not too much that it breaks your flow, etc. I find that if the content can hit that sweet spot consistently with its sentences, it will be inherently engaging for me, even if I don't care about the overall story. On the other hand, I often try interesting stuff that's above my level and even if I like the story, the frustration wins over if there's too many lookups, and if the content is particularly interesting, then the language just feels like an annoying barrier to the fun and I once switched to English just so I can get to the end faster and find out what happens lolOnce you're upper intermediate and understand most content, then it becomes a lot more about volume of content that you can get through rather than difficulty of any one sentence, so you will naturally want to pick content that's interesting and can keep you engaged for longs amounts of time.

you guys should really watch anime in your TL, especially newer stuff. I haven't in a while but just started Dan Da Dan's second season and have already added like 20 cards. You just pick up so much more slang and casual phrases, which are actually useful. I mostly consume german though current events podcasts and novels/nonfiction books, which are great, but you don't really get the super-colloquialism there.

You don't even know or understand the current slang kids that speak your native language use, because it provides nothing of value, you don't use it, and if you encounter it you correctly write it off as retarded. The slang you do learn will almost instantly become outdated, so trying to use it will make you look ridiculous. But more importantly you shouldn't even attempt to use it in the first place because you're not a middle school girl or gay man who watches too much TikTok. How often do you say shit like "slay" or "it's giving X vibes" in real life? Hopefully not much, if you're a grown man. Really the only value of learning slang from anime is you'll be able to understand more anime. I guess it's fine if that's your goal. I'm just saying don't be one of those people that gets bogged down in slang thinking it's means you have some sort of deep esoteric understanding of the language, when it's kinda useless in the grand scheme of things.

i have been meditating while listening to content that is well above my level (e.g sitting still and listening intently while making absolutely no conscious effort to understand what im hearing) and I was just doing it out of curiosity, not expecting any results, but it actually seems to work. notice the sounds of words more vividly, notice them again when I hear them later, statistical learning starts to happenI tried the massive passive listening stuff (in addition to active study) before and didn't find it very helpful. subconscious statistical learning is supposed to start occurring after you've heard a word or pattern enough times. That's how it works in babies and children, they gradually pick up the meaning of things without having to consciously work it out. but I never found passive listening (even in large quantities) to be much help. I understand that babies and children are extremely interested in and attentive to sound, and like to listen to speech even if they don't know what it means. maybe you need that very strong initial encoding of the sounds to enable statistical learning to happen
