If you learn primarily by talking to people and you have a good ear for pitch you can learn chinese much faster than korean. The grammar is very simple and the vocabulary is very analytic, korean is the polar opposite. On the other hand if your learning process is reading-heavy or you have trouble with pitch then chinese will be harder.

As for content, Chinese has the best classical literature of any country in the world IMO. It also has good historical tv dramas like romance of the three kingdoms. But for modern content Korean is better. I started learning Korean purely because of korean youtube, its much superior to western. The kdramas are also not all just rom-com slop like people think, there are a lot of well written high-art korean dramas

Also Chinese people tend to be more aggressive/rude but more open. Koreans tend to be very kind and polite and rarely get angry but can be a bit stuffy

I got a reminder on my calendar that I'd supposedly completed a year of learning French. I hadn't studied it because it filtered me out. Also, I feel like I'll be giving up German soon. It should be quite easy to manage and not get too out of control.

Do you think its effective or helpful to read out loud in your target language? I read a lot in my target language but I never really read out loud. Should I be doing that? I feel like content where you're really interested in knowing whats being said, out of genuine interest in knowing whats being said (not just a desire for language learning) seems to be the biggest factor in speed of acquisition. chomsky and krashen seem to be right about this. When you have genuine curiosity regarding what you're hearing certain juices start to flow in the brain and levers get switched on. I think it activates natural subconscious acquisition mechanisms that don't get activated when you're simply studying dry content or purposefully 'learning' the language.

I notice the weebs who watch anime and the idol-obsessed kpop girls are some of the most amazing language learners as long as they don't turn on NL subtitles

I think interesting content doesn't matter until you're upper intermediate. Up until then, you're not really able to enjoy content for itself because you're breaking down everything down into sentences and words, and you're going through it much slower and it's a different experience. Content is just a collection of sentences and the most important thing is that it's at your level, just enough cognitive load that you're growing but not too much that it's frustrating, just enough lookups that you're increasing your vocabulary but not too much that it breaks your flow, etc. I find that if the content can hit that sweet spot consistently with its sentences, it will be inherently engaging for me, even if I don't care about the overall story. On the other hand, I often try interesting stuff that's above my level and even if I like the story, the frustration wins over if there's too many lookups, and if the content is particularly interesting, then the language just feels like an annoying barrier to the fun and I once switched to English just so I can get to the end faster and find out what happens lol

Once you're upper intermediate and understand most content, then it becomes a lot more about volume of content that you can get through rather than difficulty of any one sentence, so you will naturally want to pick content that's interesting and can keep you engaged for longs amounts of time.

you guys should really watch anime in your TL, especially newer stuff. I haven't in a while but just started Dan Da Dan's second season and have already added like 20 cards. You just pick up so much more slang and casual phrases, which are actually useful. I mostly consume german though current events podcasts and novels/nonfiction books, which are great, but you don't really get the super-colloquialism there.

Wenn ich Ausländer Deutsch radebrechen höre, stört mich am meisten das Nutzen des falschen Artikels. Es klingt meinem Gehör nach komisch und ist sofort merkbar. Ehrlich finde ich einen schlechten Akzent weniger störend, obwohl ich das auch nur hier und da leiden kann. In der Regel mache ich einen großen Bogen um Shows, Interviews, pp in denen Ausländer zu Wort kommen, was oft beim Interviews mit ausländischen Botschaftern passiert. Es wundert mich wie schlecht solche angebliche Profi oftmals in Deutsch sind, wenn das ein Teil deren Job sein sollte. Ich stelle mir vor, dass sowas bei Muttersprachlern um einiges nerviger ist.

Really no reason to learn slang if you're over 18. You don't even know or understand the current slang kids that speak your native language use, because it provides nothing of value, you don't use it, and if you encounter it you correctly write it off as retarded.
The slang you do learn will almost instantly become outdated, so trying to use it will make you look ridiculous. But more importantly you shouldn't even attempt to use it in the first place because you're not a middle school girl or gay man who watches too much TikTok. How often do you say shit like "slay" or "it's giving X vibes" in real life? Hopefully not much, if you're a grown man.
Really the only value of learning slang from anime is you'll be able to understand more anime. I guess it's fine if that's your goal. What does practicing your target language look like for you? How long do you practice for? I have been learning Spanish for 3 years now and my friend who speak Spanish say I am doing well. I don't believe I have progressed far enough yet though. Maybe there is no real measure for how far along you are. I understand some advanced things but miss simple things sometimes and that pisses me off.

i have been meditating while listening to content that is well above my level (e.g sitting still and listening intently while making absolutely no conscious effort to understand what im hearing) and I was just doing it out of curiosity, not expecting any results, but it actually seems to work. notice the sounds of words more vividly, notice them again when I hear them later, statistical learning starts to happen

I tried the massive passive listening stuff (in addition to active study) before and didn't find it very helpful. subconscious statistical learning is supposed to start occurring after you've heard a word or pattern enough times. That's how it works in babies and children, they gradually pick up the meaning of things without having to consciously work it out. but I never found passive listening (even in large quantities) to be much help. I understand that babies and children are extremely interested in and attentive to sound, and like to listen to speech even if they don't know what it means. maybe you need that very strong initial encoding of the sounds to enable statistical learning to happen

i put literally every game, my computer, and most of my online media usage in TL (because i'm thankfully at liberty to do so) and it does work wonders. i play an mmorpg and you know you often encounter items where you first think "ok makes sense in the setting but prolly rare irl," but when you do encounter these obscure words irl, you feel like you have arcane intellect.
rpgs generally seem good for this because they usually employ word use that has more variety than games of simpler settings. quite the gold mine
