I spent my evening and finished mapping the turkish numeric system into the italian one into a table on my blog for future reference during my study. What is even a distributive number. I learned new latin words by trying to translate them into Italian, I also had to find words of old literary register to successfully translate those numbers. Protip to get pressreader or something similar free through your local library. I found a monthly Tagalog magazine that has stuff like short stories, articles, reviews, poetry, etc. Tagalog doesn't have a lot of literature/media so it's been a goldmine for me.

Learning Tagalog is fun because it has a unique situation where the prestige dialect of the language is almost 50% English. It's kinda like how in English, most of our core vocabulary is native for basic words like "house", "wife", "drink", "work", etc. but a lot of technical vocabulary is French/Latin. It's like that in Metro Manila's Tagalog, but even more extreme than English/French. I'm only A2ish but an entire short story in that dialect aimed at native speakers is actually excellent comprehensible input for me. Alright, I need some advice please, I'm an undergrad college student who wants to ideally go to grad school. I only have to technically take the "202" class for the graduation requirement, which I'm currently working towards with ASL. That being said, I'm really struggling with ASL and am not sure I'm even going to fully pass this current semester. The actual language I take doesn't truly matter, but is it a dumb idea to consider switching languages then to take a placement test to make up for lost time? I'd still have another two classes of ASL if I do stay.I was thinking Italian, not because I think I could get to where I need so easily, but because would I have more opportunities for comprehensible input and it technically could be used to support my major.

A speech pathologist suggested that I take it as I currently have an exasperated stutter due to the medication I'm taking. From what I understand, even finger spelling alone can help reduce getting "stuck" in a stutter. It actually has helped, but I learned that from the initial 101 class so progressing further isn't actually going to do much for me.Sadly, Swedish isn't an option. I can pick between Spanish, Italian, French, German, Vietnamese and Portuguese. Spanish would probably have a larger impact simply given where I live, but part of my actual undergrad research work is involving interpretations of certain Italian works - so it's at least a slightly related use case that would be more applicable when I apply to grad school, I suppose. It's also a lot easier to find comprehensible input in Italian that I'd genuinely enjoy, haha.

Japanese counters are kind of weird. People say "oh but we do the same thing in English where we say 'five mugs of beer,' 'six sheets of paper,' 'ten loaves of bread,' etc." but there are some critical differences.1. Those are all actual nouns. You can say "This is a mug," or "it's hard to bake loaves of bread from scratch."2. Those are all regular. We just have one set of numbers and just say "of noun" at most. Sometimes people just say "five beers" or "two waters" when it's obvious we mean "five mugs of beer" or "two bottles of water."Japanese counters are arbitrary and set it stone with their own regularities already baked in, and they can be overly broad, too. Like how "hon" refers to any long and stick-shaped object. It's "ippon, nihon, sanbon, yonhon, ..." Sometimes the first two numbers use hito and futa instead of ichi and ni, before switching back to the other system.Sometimes common counters overlap.They're basically different sets of numbers for different types of things, with the most uncommon ones being for counting one particular thing.
