Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
Mom, is "Home Alone" this year again on TV?
I hope Santa Claus brings me lots of gifts

You generally want to start with a premade deck of the most ~1000-2000 words. Learn 10 new cards a day (or more if you can handle more daily reviews) while supplementing it with immersion to improve your listening. When you finish the premade deck, you want to make your own deck with words you mine from your immersion. The point of the decks is to make it easier to understand the words when they appear in your immersion and reinforce the words so you don't forget them.

I'll have a lot of free time before New Year's and I want to take a break from German, then start grinding it again in 2026. Only until the end of 2025, and then maybe as a side project, focusing on German and English again.

>>
>>217768387
I lack experience but i think it depends on how you plan to proceed with the language in the future. If you plan to get a certificate or to take courses after a certain point (say you learn up to A2 through self study and then you take courses from that point on, up until B2) if you use anki, you will know what is your degree of proficiency, since there are decks that are called 'N5', 'HSk 1' or 'A1'. In that way, it is the closest thing to following a structured program and i think it may be especially important or useful for people who are learning logographic languages, but if someone cannot sustain that routine and the are learning an 'easier' language it may not be necessary.

Having some structure (like a book or a course) would be great i think, but honestly i should abstain from giving advice until i gain credibility.

Pic unrelated.

Truth be said, that wasn't that bad of a choice. It doesn't make a distinct sound and the rules for writing it are rather uncharacteristic of Russian, requiring to memorise a fairly large amount of roots and endings. It's historical spelling for historical spelling's sake.
The only character they arguably shouldn't've removed is i (as in "pyccкiй" in the meхanon's pic), makes things harder to read without it, especially in handwriting.
>>
>>217767364
What's the metric for this score? The high proficiency of Germans is a complete meme. Germans who have contact with international guests already struggle with proper English (I'm talking about people working in big stores in Frankfurt or Berlin), Germans in high positions in US companies can't speak English fluently, and if you leave the large cities, it gets even worse.
And contrary to popular belief, young Germans aren't more proficient in English, because more and more content on the internet is created in German (think Youtube channels, TikToks and whatever) so they don't even see the need to learn English to participate in online culture.
It's getting worse, and I can't see why Germany should have a higher proficiency than Norway or Finland (although I don't have the slightest cue how good their English is).

tl,dr: German proficiency in English is a complete lie

Fortunately for Germanons, Rammstein is singlehandedly increasing the relevance of the German language by making popular songs in it.

On a serious note, i do not believe what i said, even accounting for English proficiency rates, German is a language that has been very influential in philosophy and i think its the second most commonly studied language in many parts of the world

Noel ağacı, Noel'in en önemli sembolü olduğunu düşünüyorum.

>German is a language that has been very influential in philosophy
From a linguistic point of view, due to its vocabulary and grammar, German is the language best suited to explain scientific topics and write scientific articles in. Until well into the 19th century, scientific literature was mostly written in German and if you wanted to be able to read articles and books, you had to learn the language. As we all know, it was succeeded by English in modern times.

>Rammstein
Most lyrics of Rammstein songs are highly poetic (at least of the first three albums, I lost interest in Rammstein after Mutter) and even got analysed by lyricists and experts of poetry.

>Mediano

2 years ago i was very German pilled. Today i still think about the language, almost daily probably, but it was more intense back then. So i printed the 1000 most commonly used words in German and their translation in English. Obviously this concept failed because it doesnt follow a structured approach, it doesnt come with audio and it doesnt follow a review pattern and it doesnt follow a standard terminology; say 'A1'. Back then i thought the reason why i couldnt learn the language was because i didnt have a coursebook with audio (youtube playlists were not acceptable to me); now i realize i was being whiny and i should have followed the advice of Iclal (learning with youtube videos and free websites) and if i had done that, maybe i would be fluent by now. Also that there are free courses outside of youtube probably.

At the time i didnt know about the existence of /t/orrent, but i dont really think it is a game changer, the hassle is too much and there are copyright free courses available.

I doubt Spanish is that much more useful in the job market than French. I have the impression that knowing a major European language is even more useful than Spanish, especially if you have a passion for it. Plus you would still be bilingual, and French doesn't have a reputation for being easy, so it makes a bigger impression and arouses envy in the Anglosphere

Why are they so cracked at language learning, what method did they use?
>>
>>217776180
For a long time French was far more popular and there are more teachers who can teach it so a lot of schools only teach French (if they teach any foreign language at all). However, Spanish is definitely the most trendy foreign language to learn nowadays and it's not really close. More people visit Spain than France each year. Spanish has more speakers by a lot. It's not hard to see why.
>>
>>217780028
Doubt. I was thinking about this recently and there is a French complex in the Anglosphere. All that talking about faggotry, being meak, portrayal of the French in the media. It's seems like a massive cope
>Spanish is significantly more valuable in the US job market
Why? There are millions of bilingual people in the country; the economies of Spanish-speaking countries aren't as developed. It would definitely be useful in everyday life in the US, I agree.

While the Ural-Altaic theory might be linguistic and anthropological pseudoscience, it will still make a great source for my conlang.

I'm going to use a modified Latin alphabet based on modern Turkic languages: a b c ç d e f g h i j k l m n ň o ö p q r s ş t u ü v y z x
Phoneme-grapheme mapping is strictly phonemic: c /d͡ʒ/, ç /t͡ʃ/, j /ʒ/, ň /ŋ/, q /q/, x /χ/, ş /ʃ/. Vowel inventory /a e i o u ø y/ written a e i o u ö ü. Vowel length is contrastive, orthographically VV (incl. öö, üü, inspired by Mongolian). No harmony (but I'm opening to adding it later after I develop a good vocabulary list), no morphophonemic alternations, no silent segments.

For noun cases I thought it would be good to go with: -solg INESS(“in”), -dur ADESS/LOC(“at/on”), -ga ALL(“to/toward”), -dan ABL(“from”), -tab COM(“with, accompaniment”), -de ABE(“without”), -sur TOP/ABOUT(“about”), -ken BEN(“for”), -deg EQU(“like/as”), -gaar INS(“by/using”), -saar PERL(“through/along”). Default constraint: one REL suffix per NP. I'm going to use predominantly suffixing agglutination; no person/number agreement on verbs with subject indexing via free pronouns. Nominal template: N > (PL) > (POSS) > (REL) with PL -nar and possessive enclitic type suffixes -b, -s, -t, -bin, -sin, -tin (POSS attaches to the possessed head). Relational morphology is case like postpositional suffixation with minimal inflection otherwise.

Verbal TAM is analytic-agglutinative with invariant suffixes: Ø = NONPAST/GEN, -kag = PST, -bol = FUT. Copula (nai) is suppletive only in being a distinct lexeme: nai / naikag / naibol.

You're not wrong. Zoomers often sprinkle English words all over their German sentences. But that doesn't automatically mean they're very proficient in English. It's probably English online culture bleeding into German online culture because of overlap.
Even worse, though, is that English phrases sometimes get translated 1:1 into German and get used a lot. For example "I'm fine with that". Idiots started to say "Ich bin fein damit". Doesn't make any sense in German and just sounds retarded.

I think i will settle for the idea that i should only try to learn logographic languages in ideal conditions (having a coursebook with audio) but the alphabetical languages i could make an attempt to learn for free on the internet. This will allow me to stop being a bum and learn French or German, this time for real, in 2026.

I just think being able to track your degree of proficiency in Mandarin and Japanese is really important. Learning to write in hanzi, kanji or the kana system, is really hard without a book and there are very few series and movies with voiceovers in Chinese.

i need as the other guy said a warmup and i just think if i try to learn Mandarin without a book, i will end up with some knowledge gaps, perhaps my writing will be subpar, maybe i will know some intermediate vocab but i will miss some fundamentals, due to the lack of structure.

The idea of having had the opportunity to become fluent in one year in French or German and instead having chosen to use my time to barely reach upper A1 in Mandarin in the same time period, makes me uncomfortable.

sorry for the wall of text.

Why do kids in Anglo countries grow up without learning their family's native language so often? It seems to only happen in the Anglosphere. This is true because China does not have the desire to rival American cultural hegemony. If president Xi decided to change the writing system to latin and make a concious effort to export Chinese culture and also publish their scientific papers in Mandarin, everyone would learn Mandarin, but China will settle for economic, technological and scientific hegemony alone.

Why would you stunt your child's mental development? There is scientific proof that being bilingual creates additional neural pathways and makes your brain function better as a whole.

I'm a born & raised Anglo, but I only speak to my 4 year old in Spanish. She speaks both languages effortlessly. My wife only talks to her in English, and I only talk to her in Spanish. She knows both perfectly and can respond to anything in either language without thinking. She outperforms most other kids her age in any cognitive category.

Someone post the video about those parents who raised their (white) kid Japanese first language and she got traumatised and developmentally delayed by it and to this day still can't speak proper English

Anglos really believe that growing up bilingual will negatively affect you (when all studies show the opposite). No wonder you guys are so bad at studying languages.

why aren't you learning maori yet?

>most plentiful resources of all polynesian languages
>fastest growth rate in number of speakers
>lots of media, music, youtube vids, and even shows available online for free
>grammar is easier than you think (verbs don't conjugate for person and number, nouns don't inflect; instead everything is done with particles and markers)

The Māori population is growing at double the rate of the entire population of NZ; a 12.5% increase since 2018 compared with 6.3% for the general population. The Treaty of Waitangi Act 1975 establishing the Waitangi Tribunal which essentially allows the government to have Māori-led programs in place that ensure the language and customs are supported.

French speakers, in the phrase

"Le couple est content de partir pour Paris dans trois jours"?

why is there a "de" before the word "partir", when the verb "partir" is already in its infinitive form?

for example, in the phrase

"Les acteurs veulent partir pour Cannes"

There isn't a "de" before "partir".

the couple (fuck my single goy life) is "happy TO leave" (infinitive)
"de = to". when you use adjectives + infinitives

I like posting this when some American says they want to teach their baby Chinese or Basque or whatever meme shit seems exotic to them. Bilingualism isn't completely free, spreading out exposure to two or more languages will delay development, and sometimes you can make your kid appear retarded.

It literally is. It hasn't cost me any money at all.

Incorrect, wrong, and pseudoscience. No proof of this at all.

Only your kids would appear retarded, because they would inherit your retarded genes.

We would use “to” in English as well anon, think of “de” as “to” in this case. Otherwise in English it would be “the couple is happy leave for Paris in three weeks”
>>
>>217808189
Hi anon, sorry that happened to you. Ironically, the exact same thing happened to me when I first started learning French several years ago with my québécois friends. But I didn’t let it discourage me and now I speak French fluently. My advice is to not let us discourage you in your learning journey. The first few months of learning a language can be extremely lonely because you aren’t able to have any sort of conversation. However, learning a language is a marathon not a sprint, it takes several years. I also advise you to try and find French people to talk to not québécois, because French people are generally much nicer to new learners and they usually are happy you are trying to learn their language. They will often trade with you in exchange for practicing their English (unlike the québécois who already speak English fluently). Also, even now that I speak French fluently, I refuse to speak with québécois people still because they are such assholes and the way the speak French is ugly and improper. I hope this message finds you well and you don’t give up :)
>>
>>217808301
It's a meme because your child does not need Chinese in America. Your child needs English to succeed socially and academically. Instead of reading books above his reading level and refining his vocabulary, he's going to be asking you what's an "intersection" because he only learned that word in ching chong.

There is no medical need for it, that's another jewish lie. The infant foreskin is supposed to be attached to the glans and can't be pulled back until after puberty, and as for phimosis in adolescents and adults, that can be easily solved through steroid creams and light stretching. Always doubt what Jewish and Muslim "doctors" claim.

"पुराना" ipa: /pʊ.ɾɑː.nɑː/ is an adjective used for objects, that contracts with बूढ़ा that also refferes to an aged entity, but in specific use to reffer to people, पुराना is an adjective that reffers to inanimated aged objects.

That could never happen if you learned a language where the natives tend to have a low English proficiency rate (Japanese, Mandarin, Russian maybe) and if you ever travel to places where most people speak English, you will have to make a concious effort to speak their language, which can feel daunting if your pronunciation or vocabulary is less than perfect, but if you travel to places where most people dont speak English you will have no choice but to communicate with them in their NL

Nonetheless it makes perfect sense to learn a western language out of ideological compatibility, some societies are very chuddy and they hate immigrants, tourists, anyone who is not the same ethnicity as them regardless of where they live, etc. French society is an open society with a rich intellectual tradition.

So there is a problem with the game that I'm hacking to create a Polish translation patch. Adding more than one character to the index for in-game texts breaks the game. This game's code is a fucking Jenga tower. No wonder there are no mods for it. I could replace Q, V, X, q, v and x and maybe even the apostrophe in addition to the one free slot, but that isn't enough for Polish diacritic letters.

My only option might be to translate the French version of the game because it might have enough slots for Polish letters.
