A door slammed somewhere. It must have been the other in the dining room. He stood for an instant too long, and a shape appeared in the doorway; the room was iridescent as it flickered between a rotted husk and a well-lit home; and in the shuddering lightning he could see the horrifically battered form of Harigami. The red cap was gone, and her bloodied hair was slicked to her forehead and -- should the bridge of her nose not been caved by the blow of a candlestick, would have concealed a now white-oozing eye that bulged from a gray-matted face.

"Ahh... 'scuse me mister... I tried to look nice for you, but Uwagi is in a mood again. Would you mind passing me a glass of water?"

The garbled words came from her crushed throat, and as she spoke, her shattered teeth disintegrated in her mouth. There were no thoughts left to think; only action filled his mind -- to scream, to gasp in terror; for never before, though many a corpse, desiccated, bloated, burst, and torn apart he had seen and never been able to unsee -- never had he seen one walk, never had one spake thus.

His stumbling hand found something, the cutting board whirled and thumped against the ghoul's chest, clattered to the crooked floor and lay still. She did not even offer the slightest shiver; simply rubbing the bloody bruises on her throat in contemplation.

"You're rather clumsy, but it's okay! Do you think she'd calm down if I gave her another drink?"

A lie to those who are unable to see; what pleases those who live in play would be to play along; and thus he, who would allow himself but a moment of terror, spoke.

"Y-yes. Why, it -- why it always -- it always would calm me down when I was upset to sit back with something strong. But... whiskey, yes, she was asking for some. And I don't see any here. Perhaps I could go out to a shop and get some?"

She rubbed her face, and a loose tooth fell out of her jaw as it clicked with each preposterous attempt to close it.

"Ah, um... I'm very sorry but for some reason, I don't seem to be able to see very well. I think I might be dehydrated. Why, just last week, I read that --"
"I'm very sorry, Miss Harigami, but I really ought to get going if I'm to get it and be back in time for dinner. It's getting rather late."

"Oh, I'm sorry, I'm sorry... it is terribly rude for me to keep you here for so long. Well, would you like to say goodbye to Miss --"

There was a thud, and something red embedded itself in the crook of Harigami's neck. With a yank, she stumbled backwards.

"Oh, Uwagi, do you need me to move? Sorry, sorry! He said he's going to -- guh..." The blunt side of the ax burst the side of her head, mercifully twisting her body away from him so she lay facedown on the floor.

"You could have just asked!" Even as she lay limp, her arms scrabbling about like a beheaded cockroach, the hellishly cheerful voice continued to babble, and from his trembling hand, the knife fell on the ground, clattering into some invisible space beneath them.

"Naught but silence in my house, once more, that I may rest for but a moment."

Uwagi's face was shrouded in dark. All that he could see beneath the brim of the white hat were a pair of hate-filled, ruby eyes. Her hair a wreath of golden flame, she blossomed with sighs and shifted towards him, the dark head of the ax swinging as if it were a thurible.

"Not alloted to even tell my own story."

He tried to back away, he knew now that it was well, and truly, the end of the rope. Rather, no cunning, no cleverness, no wisdom could save him.

I've been drawing for a while and in this site, and in every single drawing thread there are some "people" whose only purpose in their lives is thread drama. "OMG did you know ANON once drew that? Garbage posts like that repeated over and over and over for years even by nolives trying to enforce some mean girls clique bullshit between artists, instead of drawing.

Her hesitancy was his advantage. He thrust himself forwards, splitting the distance between them with the chef's knife; but the tip jammed into one of her ribs and the dull orange spine flaked apart in his hands from the force of the engagement.

"I -- ghk... it... aghh..." She didn't have time to react before his fumbling hand had reached the knife in his pocket. He rammed the blunt end into the side of her temple. He did not even feel as his palm gaped wide and began to spill red across both of them, but his tight grip on the blade suddenly loosened as she, shocked, with face as red as a devil, snatched his arm and they fell, she atop him. Her snapping jaw lowered as she slammed him hard, again and again against the rotting floor.

Yet, here as well, the gods send help on wires. She was suddenly yanked back, unable to move as silver strands garroted her throat, and her eyes bulged and her face purpled.

"If you don't get off of him, your head will come off."

Uwagi's fingers scrabbled around her darkening flesh, before she finally relaxed.

"Come on. Gently now, Uwagi."

The dark-washed face was pulled back to the dining area, while he lay on the ground, gasping for breath.

"Does he look like he is from Muenzuka?"

"Don't make that ugly face at me. Especially while you're running around scaring people in the city. Knock it off. People are thinking you're my daughter. Even so, I came here to bring you some food and some more fuel. Shanghai is outside. Go sign for it and I'll take him to the Hakurei. Did you break his leg?"

"No."

"You youkai-like youkai are so brutish. Where's Harigami? Shanghai can't load the scrap on the wagon herself."

Wow, I chose the perfect day to fully catch myself up with the story 2 days ago. Finished reading everything not even an hour or so before that last entry was posted, and Alice finally made it to the scene! At last! You got me to reread/relisten to DiPP as well for extra-immersion and, looking through the sources posted in >>47710247, I suddenly have so much more newfound appreciation for both the album itself (something I've struggled with for a while but is no longer the case) and your own story here. The forethought there for the worldbuilding is quite admirable imo.
The intrigue/overall state of the setting has always been one of the biggest draws for me since the initial posts and you have a very captivating way of drawing out suspense through satisfyingly visceral emotional tension. Hopefully this doesn't all come off as too emphatic of me, it's been an excellent tale thus far that's spurred a surprising amount of internal reflection within myself as well. Very inspirational though, given morbidity aside lol, but I really do like it! Best of luck with the rest.

The kitchen was colorful once more. Something stiff jabbed him in the side. He gasped and finally began to retire from his lazing about on the floor in a pool of his own fluids. A plain faced woman looked down at him, frowning.
"Wow. I'm surprised that they left you alive with wounds like those. Here, take my hand." A gloved left hand, sans ring finger, was thrust towards him.
He ignored it and pulled himself to his feet, prying himself up by a drawer-handle.
"I can get up."
"Doesn't look like it."
"It's alright. Who are you?" He leaned on the hard counter and stared at her. She was a little shorter than him; her weathered face told him she was a bit younger too -- she looked about thirty. Her blond hair was short, cut into a cropped bob; over her shoulders, pressed down by a large satchel, a burgundy capelet lay over a patchwork set of tan coveralls.
She sagged to the side as well, her weight resting on the wood-handled staff.
"Would it make a difference? I'm here to get you home. Come on." She waved him over, and before he could begin to follow, turned and began to limp towards the exit. When he continued -- rather obstinately -- to stand against the counter, she stopped, tilting her head back in annoyance.
"I've got a schedule to keep. This isn't my only delivery today. You can come with me or you can stay in the care of these two. Either way, I'll have done what I could to help."

I went no-internet for a big chunk of time, from around 2015-2021. I didn't get to see this... yuri trolling/beef/infighting/whatever it is occur in real time. Yuri was very lowkey back in the day from what I remember, no one hated it and no one spammed it nor was obsessed with it, it just existed on its own threads and that was it. I feel like a confused old man when I see infighting like this now. What is wrong with doing a yuri request? Why does it make people sperg out? This has been happening for the last few months so I dunno why you think that break you took matters but whatever. IF you enjoy yuri, then I guess you'd be fine with it, but not everyone is happy when every thread is filled with posts about how all 2hus hate all men. The view of the courtyard from the reverse was transfigured from the memory he had: drenched trees sagged with age and bent under twiggy green shoots that bursted from their pulped shoulders. The few tall pines that bore any green were rankled with pocks and blisters; their limbs bowed towards the littered ground. A lone gravel path lead out into the evening shade, dotted by glimmering camphors and little motes of green and red that hung like holiday strings in the evenfall. Everything was covered with a blanket of rusty needles. It was as if he had left an entirely different house: the landscape he had just been acquainted with, moments ago, been replaced with a novel pallet; what had seemed to be a mildewed summer had become a mulched, leached autumn.

Another woman, dressed neatly in a bluebell dress fringed with white ribbon, bowed to the two before dumping a wheelbarrow of scrap into a wagon hitched to the large, half-tracked cart parked in the yard.

"I don't understand." He said. "Who are you? Where am I? What was she, and why does everything look different here? Why--"
"Shanghai! Escort our loudmouthed guest to the car. I have to tie things off with Uwagi. You, whatever your name is. Go sit in the wagon. If you have any questions, ask the doll."

She pulled herself from beneath him, bowing and hobbling back into the house. He was left on the porch, leaning to one side askew like a proper veteran, unable to so much as shift his weight without risking further twisting his ankle until the mute laboress could approach him.

Solid work with the voxels with the room, but I guess some things might work better in low poly or sprites.
I don't think the main problem is it being a chibi but rather it being a top-down game, the perspective of the sprite is from diagonally above so it's a bit hard for it to look the same from the front.
Not sure if you did it for symmetry's sake by her face is also 1 voxel/pixel wider, the lack of shadows in the cheecks and the neck/lower head pixel row is also longer. But maybe you did it intentional due to voxels being a different than pixels dunno.
Depending on what you want to do you might have to tweak the voxels making things like the hair bigger or change the camera angle(not sure how that would work with your project/voxels tho).

She bowed and curtsied, and returned to porting between the shed and the wagon. He was surrounded by the quiet air and, peaking his ears, the clicking of something mechanical, and quiet voices muffled through the open window of the house.

Scrap metal piled high around his recline. Electronics he had seen when he was a boy, next to smartphones with cracked screens. Half a shotgun; the rusted hilt of a gladius. A diary, the pages fused together and browned, that disintegrated in his hand when he tried to leaf through it. A canvas bag full of copper wire and batteries infested with tin-pest. Broken dolls. Melted campaign posters. A worn, silver crucifix. An iron bell. A chainless bicycle. A dented gerry can insigned with an eagle. A torn, blue sailor's uniform with a red sun. Half a set of socket wrenches, the steel pitted and oranged.

The woman named Margatroid then emerged from the house holding a canister beneath her arm. She made a show of rapping her cane heartily against the post and shouting, "Shanghai, come here!", and the false-woman dropped the flatscreen TV she was holding and scuttled over to her to help lower her that she could navigate the caved wood stringers.

Was the house rotted or was he unsure? He did not know.

"Gh... be careful, Shanghai. It's worse today.

Hey, you. We're going to take you to the hospital and they're going to look at your leg. The Hakurei is with another 'incident', so you'll be staying there to get cleaned up before you depart."

"Miss..."

"Margatroid. Mrs. Margatroid."

"Who is this Hakurei? And where are we?"

"She's an acquaintance of mine. She can escort you back out. You'll have to get home on your own after that. I take it you're from England?"

"In a manner of speaking."

"Is everyone who comes over crazy? God's sake... Shanghai, finish loading that and let's get rid of this fellow. What year is it?"

And with that the strongwoman pattered to sit next to him, laying herself as a shore against the blockaded pile of trash.

The road was rough, scattered gravel and root-packed clay that jarred his teeth even against the flexing treads; he eventually sat up fully and turned to Margatroid.
"What is all this scrap? Some of this should be in a museum, shouldn't it? Where did you get it?"

"This is Gensoukyou. Forgotten things, abandoned things, fantasies -- they end up here. It's a land of lotus eaters. There's no point in you worrying about it, anyways. We're going to get you out of here. Think of it as a bad dream. You'll soon forget once you pass the barrier."

He reached between his legs and soon found a shattered phone.

"This isn't forgotten. Most of this isn't even a century old. These, this," he gestured to the television, "this is hardly a couple of years old.

And as for being lotus eaters..."

"We certainly indulge." She glanced back at him, and smiled. "Or they do. In the city. That fruit only flowers here, now, if you're talking about the Tunisian strain. A good friend of mine tried to grow some, once, but she never managed. Too impatient."

The scrap continued to rattle and he narrowly grabbed a pile of wrapped tins before they tumbled onto the forest floor. Shanghai -- he presumed -- the laboress, panned her expressionless face over the flat-screen and gazed on him. Her chipped mouth was a flat line of red. Her eyes were damp. A young maiden's.

"I don't decide what is forgotten. The library, for example, has been receiving so many books lately, that they've simply started burning them in the old hell. A lot of the new-technologies in the city are stuff that Kourin or some of the other scrap-gatherer's have repurposed with the Kappa. And of course, the last thirty years have allowed it to grow too big. There's just too many humans running around nowadays. Muenzeka -- you're lucky, by the way, that you weren't there -- is practically a meat market.

By the way, are there more suicides out there, nowadays?"

"I don't think so. But I never checked."

"Hm. Anyways, more and more bodies and more and more scrap keep drifting in. The Kasha can barely keep up with them. The lakeside has been reeking lately, especially in this awful heat. I must ask -- what on earth is going on outside?"

"Nothing... nothing that hasn't been going on for quite a while, I suppose.

Do a lot of people live in these woods?"

"No... why do you ask?"

"There was a house -- I passed by it; that was where Uwagi picked me up. There was a dome -- made of metal, and --"

"Oh, that old place. No, nobody has lived there for a long time -- I think it's been twenty years since someone even went inside. There was a witch -- well, people called her a witch, but she was amateurish at best -- the only thing she was really good at was stealing -- and when she wasn't out stealing things precious to other people, she would lock herself in there and fiddle around with whatever she had pilfered.
It was a shame. She was really quite talented. It's a real shame.

By the way, did Uwagi mention why she was there? The ground there is toxic, I put up signs and had told her over and over not to go near it."

I'm completely out of my depth with a lot of what I'm writing here because I'm having to do a ton of research on cultural japan and the philosophy and particularly youkai japanese ambiguity. Drawing those belts taught me a new approach when it comes to recreating "very japanese" chatacter designs; less looking at it like a full set and more like smaller different pieces, this approach is also teaching me how to draw machinery a bit better, something I am not good at.
I thought about doing something like that, matching the guardians characteristic silouette, but I arrived to the same conclusion as you, then again, some have drawn Unzan with that kind of style and he looks good, different, but good, maybe its something worth trying.

Caught up with the entries again, for being 'out of your depth' I'd still say these have been pretty well-structured. It'd make sense for the man to really only start finding out more key details after Alice comes into the picture and it's always interesting to see interpretations of how a future-Genso would pan out alongside whatever disasters loom over our own horizon. Still an intriguing story imo.
If you're looking for criticism at all, I'm likely not the best when it comes to that either but I wouldn't worry so much over needing to sound overtly-academic with your prose. Professionalism can sometimes be subjective, I'd say something about the pacing maybe but I've actually enjoyed how these events have been spaced out so far and my own writings are often slow-burns as well. I'd just make sure the plot-relevant details are just as fleshed out, if not, more so than the 'window dressing' details (but you really haven't been egregious with that either). The frequency of updates I also don't mind too much, I get that sometimes people can just be busy with other things and research will always add-on to development time. It'll all be ready once it's ready.

He remarked upon the little fires that lit the lamps; his eyes wandered over the people, who, so much smaller than those of Europe, or even the Japanese that he had seen in his modern travels, peeked out at the two strangers in their antiquated vehicle -- and then he realized, watching them pull carts loaded with boxes and parcels in the evening street, that perhaps this vehicle in itself was the bleeding edge of the world.
"Would you mind if we stop in the town?" He said, forgetting the pain in his leg as he gazed upon the surreal sight.

"Which town?" Alice continued driving, and the little circle of buildings faded into the night.

"That one looked interesting."

"No, no. It's not."

Shanghai shook her head at him and waggled her finger.

"There's plenty to do in the city. There's plenty of temples and little shops. They might even still be open, after we get your leg cleaned up. It's the finest medicine in Gensoukyou, there. And more importantly, I know a doctor who can do it on the cheap.

And if I leave this cart out and we wander to and fro, I'm some enterprising youkai will strip it bare.

He watched the stars above. The moon was visible in the day, sometimes; both here and while it was night in the cities on the other side of the world. What were the odds -- that they had both been looking at the same moon, drifting like a petal on the great lake of the sky while he drifted below on the cloudless sea. Far from the light of the city -- rarer seen than one might think -- with only the engine to provide the comforting smell of burning diesel above him sat a familiar set of stars.

"Alice."

"I asked you politely to stop bothering me."

"Heh. I can walk from here if you'd like."

"No you can't. What do you want."

He raised a sticky hand up and pointed to a great hunter that sat in the sky.

"That man there. I met him once."

Shanghai silently laughed but her eyes remained lifeless.

"Come on. I get lying to Uwagi, but are you really going to try to tell me such ridiculous tales?"

"You just helped a girl put her head back on after her brains got pummeled out, but you won't believe that? I speak nothing but the truth."
