Not entirely true the Famicom Detective Games did extremely well and that is because it had better production values and ultimately delivered 6-8 hours worth of content without going over budget. It does prove some VN's with gameplay elements can have success in a niche market. Although it's not always easy.

VN audiences are varied across the spectrum. Some like long scenes with fewer routes, or more routes with less choices. You can not satisfy everyone. But I do get your point. It does need balance because too many choices, you might end up with less satisfying writing in other routes, but if you have less choices, you may end up liking a character who's route you can not get on because they are a side character.

Honestly thinking about what VN Audiences would like is a very interesting thing to me, as sometimes I do wonder if we could ever get more premium VN's like Maitetsu, Rance, Memories Off, Steins;Gate could happen ever again. Storytelling is essential in the VN medium as well as the Art itself.

I appreciate this release because it's a microcosm of everything that is wrong with modern publishing standards of Japanese works. It's a perfectly fake and gay facsimile of something that could have been done authentically and meaningfully. It's the first English translation of a VN from the long-running (25 years) series, official or not. At the very least it means they're doing something right and you should have a look at it to see what exactly it is.

I wonder what "modifications" they're still making to Kiminozo. Hopefully they're not busy gutting Akane's route since she's in high school and MC is an adult. I would say that the sales are getting much better on JAST's store to where they do not need to care about Steam as much as they used to. Steam does help with visibility but because ultimately everyone knows Steam likes to make sure you censor the games everyone eventually just goes to the store and buys the full version. The only thing that I would wish they could do better is pre orders to have it charge upfront rather than the day it comes out or at least to put money on points so that way I can pre order a game without having to worry if my card has money on it that day.
