How hard is the N1? Can I pass it just by watching minecraft vtubers?

N1 is roughly the equivalent of a Japanese third grader.

I have a few questions for the anons here that are of a relatively high level at this whole 日本語 thing.

1. Did spoken-Japanese lose its appeal/novelty as you became more and more fluent in the language? I’ve heard someone say that Japanese eventually sounded like normal talking and they couldn’t even really remember what it sounded like when it was all foreign to them.

2. Do you feel more satisfaction at being able to understand spoken Japanese or being able to read Japanese? Which of the two do you feel more proud of accomplishing, if any?

Do you now or have at any point felt more of an obsession towards the Japanese language itself rather than what you learned the language for in the first place? For example, I like many other people here decided to learn Japanese because I was getting into anime and played tons of Japanese games, however as I get further and further into learning the language I start to care less about learning for the anime and the video games and instead just care for the language itself if that make sense.

I would assume that the vocabulary would be limited to what’s within the game, so maybe not.

願いとは自身を叶えるもの。だが自ら願いを叶えては、人間は救われん

ok i know it's just chuuniranting and i should just move on but this sentence is confusing me so much with 自身 and 自ら. 自身 can either mean oneself or something itself, so does the first sentence mean that wishes fulfill people or fulfill themselves? and the second sentence means people fulfilling their own wishes?
>>
>>48046164
wishes should be granted you from an outside force. trying to fullfill your own desires by yourself is not how humans are saved

1. It starts to feel that way a bit, but how I get more joy out of saying "oh shit, I understood that!" than thinking "oh this sounds mysterious"

2. I use reading more but speaking and listening is much harder (maybe because I don't use the latter as much)

3. I got into it for games and manga. I still do some of that but now I'm more interested in books and literature, also some TV dramas and documentaries. It's also interesting to read the thoughts and opinions of a radically different culture. The hardest part is that normally you do reading and such for leisure but when you're learning it's basically work, so now I do really different hobbies to relax so that I can save energy for Japanese work. As you progress some things get simpler though and it becomes less work, just takes consistent daily practice.

japanese doesn't work like English. instead of jumbling words together, they create entirely new ones (e.g. 上段, 下段). plus they have a ton of duplicates thanks to native japanese and sino-japanese words (減る, 減少; 強い, 強力; 育てる, 育成, etc.)

How many words a day do you have to learn in order to make it? I started doing 20 a day but after 500 words it starts to get a little difficult so I dropped it down to 10 words a day, however now I fear that it’s too little and will make it take forever to get at a reasonable level, and I’ve seen some say that anything less than ~500 words a month is not enough. What the fuck do you guys recommend?

I aim for 15-20 new cards per day, plus however many cards I push out to over a year through repetition. Like a snowball rolling down a hill, it builds up momentum and doesn't let up. I've been at it for two years, so I've got something like 15,000 words in circulation on my Anki decks, plus my grammar cards. Some of them are super useful, and some are so niche that I saw or heard them once a year ago and have never seen them again since.

Yeah I have an obsession with collecting kanji as seen in 𩸽 for example. However, these are actually a bit harder to remember. When you already know the kanji 90% of words are way easier to learn which makes learning 80 words a day possible. I'm not claiming a beginner should do 80, but advanced learners absolutely can and maybe even should.

To me the experience of learning a new word (and esp. a new kanji) gives me a kick so it just becomes fun to learn. It also has the added bonus that you can read things you want in a somewhat doable time. Ive always wanted to read the 信天翁航海録 VN, but if i did 20 words a day i would never get there.

My point is, you learn your own boundaries when you get better and you should not be afraid to increase your load, because shit does indeed get easier.

You can maybe try to do more that was what i discovered. I was too scared to do more than my 25 everyday and then I went like "If I do 25 every day for a year thats 9000 cards, not even 10k :(". So I did 50 and what happened? Nothing, the load did not increase that much (if you use FSRS well that is).

To everyone (that is not a beginner) Just try it for a week, double your new cards. Is it too much then just stop, but maybe you can do it only time can tell.

>>48052734
I am the anon that was just arguing for 80 cards, so I might be a bit biased.

What is your new cards at right now? Do you use FSRS? If you don't it will most likely impact your a retention little bit yes. Otherwise it will just slightly increase the load.

The biggest indicator for how much new cards impact you is how much you already know. Say for example you are at 4級 level in kanji and you were to suddenly at card that only contain 3級 then it will impact it a little bit. HOWEVER, once you get over that little barrier it becomes easier again and probably wont be as bad as you first believed it to be.

In conclusion, just try and if it doesnt work out just stop.
>>
>>48052747
this anon is both based and knowledgable
>>
>>48052747
My new cards are at the default which is 20, I finish it in about 15-20 minutes, so it's why I've been thinking of increasing the workload and yes I use FSRS. Thanks for the advice, I'll increase it for a while and see how it goes.

I have been using 馬酔木 as a 旧字体 font but it has some drawbacks. Now using this one https://github.com/epistularum/kanji-restoration. What font are you using?
>>
i like the old and the new kanjis
simplified chinese went too far tho
>>
>>48054141
They're not new, most of these kanjis have been recorded as erroneous forms for hundreds of years.
>>
>>48054161
new testament is pretty old
>>
>>48054113
These are not from my reading. I was watching a video about kanji that were not in the 漢検 (and spoke with a kanken learner) and then decided to look for some very common 1級 kanji that i had not collected yet. Looking for rare kanji in natural text is unfortunately almost impossible after a certain point, something a bit more common like 羯鼓 only appears like once in an entire collection of books. I find them personally by searching in kanji frequency dictionaries, kanji dictionaries (looking for radicals/components) and kanken tests.

>>48054135
I personally use the kanken font, because using Epistularum's font requires me to check for inofficial 書き換え字 such as 弁論 so if you don't look out youre just reading anachronistic bullshit. I also should look into how he justified his choice, because he makes some non-standard choices. He has done a very beautiful job though and I respect his work, i just haven't spend the time to justify it for myself. I do use the (historical-kana) 正字-google-IME file though which I strongly recommend for fellow kanji-autists .
>>
>>48054296

im stuck at 4200 kanji since 2022

You can use the anki kanji grid addon to search for the kanken ones you miss and look for words that contain them in a dictionary if you really wanted to.

i think the "basic" japanese knowledge as you mean it, is simply learning katakana so you can read shit hidden shit like the title of the game and spell names. beyond that you need at least 2k hours of learning before playing a jrpg without getting burned out on lookups or install texthook/ocr, feed everything to chatgpt and stfu. katakana is still worth learning regardless tho

No, because if you learn more your learning becomes less volatile and semi-new words like 一様 stick way faster the more you know. Noting novel things is also good but I'd argue it's even more important to just continually reinforce the absolute basics. Get real comfortable. These are just words, and they can be yours. They should be yours.

ok so the rule seems to be, if a noun is being modified by a word that otherwise might be an adjective in the predicate of a sentence, if that word takes a non-declinable form in order to be able to modify the noun, it becomes a 連体詞

大きい is an adjective
大きな is a 連体詞

it's not about having premade stuff. it's about grouping things. like animal names, words relating to viewing/watching (眺める, 見る, 窺う, 睨む, 睨みつける, 見詰める, じっと見る, 覗く, 覗き込む, のぞき見, 盗み見, 盗視, ご覧(になる), 拝見, ちらっと見る, 観賞, 目撃する, 目をかける, 目にする, 凝視, 見渡す, 遠見, 見澄ます, 見入る, 目を凝らす, etc.)

japanese words sometimes just switch classes a 形容動詞 (na-adjective) has conjugation still when in the predicate of a sentence.

いろいろな事情 > しかし老人ホームもいろいろだよ。 (conjugation still occurs)
いろんな事をいう (can only go in front of a noun, not the predicate, has no conjugation = 連体詞)

again this is kind of news to me and i literally just got this from the very first article i found but it seems to hold true with dictionary entries. however i think not all 連体詞 are formed from adjectives. it's also not THAT important
