Running them on VRAM speeds them up by magnitudes, but there are currently no graphics cards with over 24GB of VRAM on board, therefore you need to run them in parallel, and so the costs of setting up a capable LLM box are disproportionately high beside simply paying for GPT, Gemini or whatever other corpo service available.For the record, 24GB of VRAM is considered barely enough to run some of the "decent" local models. And, if you were using memory command args (--medvram, etc.), there is no longer a need for that, as it'll pick the appropriate optimisations automatically.

And if you're going offload even 1 layer to CPU, that's going to slow you down drastically compared to having it all in the VRAM. You can run lower quants, or you can stick to 8Bs, or you can offload entirely, but it's not a good upgrade target if you're in the market for a new GPU.
