I've been able to listen and read with not too much difficulty for years now but my ability for production is zero. I understand everything as I hear it or read it, but trying to reconstruct or repeat a simple sentence after that I just heard or read is impossible. Maybe I'll start memorizing entire sentences? I'm definitely not going to interact with other humans in japanese in my life but I do want to approach the next level so I need to start something new. I have mostly full comprehension, I've been watching anime and playing games for years now but that comprehension feels transient and momentary because it goes away when I turn off the media and I'm left with only a general impression of all the information I just consumed.

Finished N1. Listening was pretty easy, reading was much harder because you have a LOT of text and very limited time so you really have to skim for the relevant parts instead of reading everything. Also I feel a bit betrayed because my N1 Anki deck didn't have everything so I had to guess a few words. The test was after lunch so I thought I'd eat light so I didn't suffer a food coma and fall asleep during, which worked, but I was bloody hungry all throughout and my stomach kept rumbling. They said there was a 40 minute break between sections but given the time it took to collect and count the answer sheets after part 1 and then hand out the question sheets for part 2 we only had 20 minutes which was barely enough time for me to run down to the nearest supermarket and grab some food but not enough time to eat it before I had to be back. Protip, bring some snacks with you.

Even though I spent the few months prior to my trip brushing up on hiragana, katakana, and working my way through Genki I, once I was faced with having to actually speak and listen to Japanese in real conversation, much of my studies seemed to disappear.I found myself defaulting a lot to pointing at menu items saying "kore onegaishimasu", expressing "oishikata!" after a meal, and lots of "arigato gozaimasu".Anyways, my tip here would be to definitely write down and bring a list of more common phrases to reference and refresh on during your trip. Also, when I was studying I focused a lot more on grammar than on vocabulary, which I realize now meant that even though I have a grasp on how to construct a sentence, I couldn't often say what I wanted to because I didn't know the right words. So I'd suggest also to swap those in your studies.And also, it's okay! In both places, Tokyo and Kyoto, simple English communication got me by just fine everywhere I went.
