Hello, newfag here. I recently got a doll and went through the guide, but I have a question. I understand that in order to apply a hairstyle I have to wash the hair first and fix it when it's still wet (Currently the hair has some kind of weird waviness). My question is, how do I give a faint curling to the hair?

You can use a styling heat iron if the hair is heat resistant, but I would not do that while the hair is wet, because it will damage it. Just like with real hair. Honestly, I've never gotten any of my wigs wet to style them.

Update on the Ikea skubb. The back and sides are reinforced with a thin sheet of foamboard. It's a bit flimsy but should be fine as a transport bag for outdoor shoots. Just gotta add another small compartment to the bottom, line the inside with a white towel and add a shoulder strap.

hello anons, I hope you dont mind the question, but /jp/ has a football team and BJD was asked if you guys wanted a player on the team which turned out to be a Shinku doll. Who's a character you want to see get an official DD? Fan-made picrel, but I'd love for anyone from the Atelier franchise to get an official doll.
>>
>>48418720
Obligatory Marin Kitagawa. Other than that, there's too many.
Holo from Spice & Wolf, Emi from Devil is a Part-Timer, any character from Trigun, Erza or Lisa from Fairy Tail, some of the Gundam characters would be cool (especially from Witch From Mercury), Tubaki and/or Maka from Soul Eater, Panty and Stocking, and this might get some flack but some of the MHA characters would actually be kinda cool.
Those are just my wishes from some of the more popular anime franchises. There's some western media I'd like to have official DDs, like Cortana from Halo or some of the LoL characters, but those are even more of a pipe dream.
>>
>>48418720
I'd wish they'd collab with more obscure franchises like back in the day. It all feels kind of corporate now.
>>
>>48418720
More square enix stuff since they were able to secure Y'shota and 2B licenses. Fate grand order still has tons of material for Volks to make. They also haven't completed all of the Rozen maiden super dollfies.

>>48420154
>obscure franchises
I think the problem is they hate sitting on inventory of unsold limited models. Some dolls are still shelf warming on volks website for years now. But I thought pic related was a pretty obscure series they made recently.

i’d love to see more Nier characters than it’s even reasonable to ask for, and then Drakengard characters would be a whole other thing. if Volks ever does more FF, i would want Kain and Cecil from IV because the dragoon and dark knight armors are my favorites, and i’m curious how they’d make them. so, uh, glory to dollkind!

Honestly, I've gotten so used to every doll being pretty much an original character and to building my own to my tastes that character-based dolls feel a bit lame, so there isn't any I want.
>>
Is it fine to leave these dolls in a hot car for a bit while shopping or something? I want to take my dolls on a day trip to photograph but am worried about leaving them in hot or cold temps when I have to leave them in the car.
>>
>>48427178
I'd be more concerned with someone stealing them than what heat or cold would do. Unless your dolls are rapidly and repeatedly temperature cycling they should be fine. At worst higher temps might make dye transfer more readily. Most of our dolls came to us as cargo and that's definitely not climate controlled.

If I ever did have to leave them in the car, I usually put them in a bag and the bag in the footwell behind the front seats with few things draped over to conceal everything. Even with it blast furnace hot in the car the bag was insulated enough that the inside was room temp. Park out of the sun if you can.
>>
>>48427178
Depends on temperature, material (vinyl will bend quicker than resin), thickness, string tightness (if any), and time. I've seen some dolls get bent legs from baking in a car during summer. I personally wouldn't, but I don't take risks with my doll.
>>48418720
Similar to >>48424998 in that it doesn't excite me. I mostly take note of accessories to potentially harvest.

Yes, I used ritdye synthetic again. Used an entire bottle just to do her limbs and abdomen. I used one bottle of dye for everything with Momoko. There was some staining around her crotch from her sitting on the shelf. Havent noticed anymore, might've sat her too early. Her head is ddh-28. Dunno how much info you want with a QRD so heres her doll lore I guess.
Yushina is an android. I was using Nier Automata, A2 specifically, as the main design inspiration. Her blocky "whiskers" are the closest design element I could come up with for Megaman Zero reference. I had Mizuka find her in the trash and recruit Momoko and Kikyo to bring her inside. Basically did the beginning of chobits by accident. She's an older model with no memory of her past household, have a vague idea of it and its the reason she has no memory and thus only a inkling of a soul. She builds a soul/consciousness gradually and Kikyo notices it and helps nurture that aspect. They get into their own adventures while Mizuka and Momoko are in school.
So what I consider the main 4 of my 6 total is done and the last one will be Umi's partner.

I wonder if I can dye my own tan doll... Any special tools required?
>>
>>48472718
Serious answer: it won't for Japan to USA, because of existing very stable and complex treaties where we sell them raw materials (cotton, food) and they export items at a lower yen price.
For everyone else however, it might suck. China will get hit with tariffs, however it may be category based (sort of like the car tariff, which I suggest people look into for an example of how these work)
The more concerning thing I find for the Euros is the GDPR which I expect to disrupt business for them for at least a year until they get their shit together.

As is common for Europe in the modern era, their politicians were so eager to virtue signal that they got the short end of the stick on multiple geo-political happenings this year between the USA, Russia, and China. They economically got fucked as they found that neither Russia or America really gave a fuck about them when the chips were down, making their dependence on Russian oil dumb, but also making their inability to at least be a middle man/ref for America and Russia equally as impossible.

Synthetic dyes. A pot large enough to fit the each individual part of the doll. Get a couple sets of hands as test pieces. I used floral wire and leftover carryout chopsticks to both rig up my parts and stir the mix with, I always do each set of limbs as a pair together to get an even coat between both arms/legs. I also bent the joints to what would show most often, you might know what I mean once you start taking one apart and see the frame. I take out every ball joint hardware as well.
Theres a dyeing guide in the QnA that I started with. My only real deviation from it is I don't take notes of dye and water amounts with time in. I was constantly adding dye and varying the times in depending on the parts and heat. Its a lot of guess work and feeling shit out. Yushina's dye took forever to take.
Do the head first and match everything to it. Dyeing it past the point you like is huge. Momoko was really dark when I did her because I saw how light my test hands got and I approximated her new bust that I did later to how dark I made her body before and its really close to the rest of her. Momoko's joints are slightly darker than her body now. If I do another full body color I'd do the joints slightly lighter compared to vinyl, I did not know how much the joints would or would not lighten when I did her.
I found grey made a pretty nice tan on semi-white so you might want to start there, and test semi-white and flesh colored hands to achieve what tan you want. >>47608884
>>
>>48481606
Also I kept a large tin foil pan full of water to the side that I would swish the parts inbetween dunks. To make sure dye didnt sit on them and cool them down some

I had a dream I was trying to find a prop for a doll photo but every single thing I tried went wrong somehow. I found the right kiddie pool but it was too expensive. I found a Sterilite bin that worked but someone stole it. I found the right stick-on tile in the crafts aisle to make the new bin look like pool tile, but the power went out because it was closing time and then the store become a Purge-like PvP zone where people communicate exclusively by howling and instead of murdering me, people kept yoinking the shit in my cart while I fought to gather the things I need and escape in this completely pitch-black rendition of my local Wal-Mart.

Has anyone else ever had a dollfie dream?

Yeah, I didn't notice, I should've adjust her dress more. That dress is getting near the end of it's life. That's the liner peeking out, I had to shop it out last year and forgot to do it this year. I had to do some repairs before I put it on her this year. It's 6 years old and she wears it a month at a time every year, which puts stress on the adjustable loops and hardware. I'm going to be devastated when she can't wear it anymore, but I'll keep repairing it as long as I can.

quarantotto.biz/angelphilia for first-party stuff, they sell out SUPER fast though (I just missed an outfit that sold out in <2 days) and never restock, so you have to buy youself and ship to a forwarder (proxy is too slow), and they only accept cash-on-delivery payment so your forwarder has to be able to handle that
faithz is an official AP reseller to the outside world so they may also carry outfits, I haven't checked personally
also stalk mandarake, they buy stock of new AP stuff and also resell old single outfits/dolls, both of which can also go quickly (but at least they sell & ship foreign directly)
some Azone (www.azone-int.co.jp/azonet) and Parabox (paraboxshop.jp) stuff for their 45-50cm dolls fits, they use the same Obitsu skeleton as AP but the vinyl parts are different, so it depends on the specific piece of clothing (biggest differences are in thigh/waist circumferences)
also stalk yahoo auctions, people will occasionally resell official AP outfits or sell their own hand-made stuff there

So this is my new girl, Aria. She's one of the new Obitsu GGR bodies that came out last month and is (mostly) and improvement over the existing Obitsu frames/bodies. She's even more of a short stack compared to AZO2 G/I bodies (which was already pretty much a 1:4 DDdy). The sculpt on the torso is nice and a marked improvement over existing Obitsu/Azone. Please let me buy the elbow joints loose, Obitsu free my girls from the 45 degree bends.

That said she also has the same clothing issues as larger busted AZO2 bodies, but even more pronounced. Even the supplied underwear is a pain to put on, and every bra smaller than DD/L or DDdy is several cm to short to fit. Obitsu 50cm (and Azone 50cm) won't fit as per Obitsu themselves.

The legs also have a structural flaw in them. Angle the foot up too much and it cuts very sharp notches into the edge of the shin. That part of the vinyl is very thin and deforms with very little stress. Mine came with a colour mismatch on the knee joints compared to the leg, which is pretty unlucky on my part. Certainly would be a shame if online shops stopped carrying spare Obitsu parts!

Overall I do really like the Obitsu GGR. The frame improvements are great and her short stack figure is amazing. I like that her waist is a bit bigger than other dolls, giving her more voluptuous figure (some dolls have waists straight out of Victorian England).

Do I recommend the doll? Yes, but with the caveat that right now her wardrobe is going to be somewhat limited. Azone's clothes for I busts were a coin flip on how well it actually fit, and the GGR L busts are larger still. Obitsu is supposedly making a smaller busts in the future so that more AZO2 clothes will fit them. But as it stands the wardrobe is AZO2 stuff that kinda fits and DD stuff that kinda works.

So when the family came to visit for the holidays, do you squirrel away your dolls to sheild them from prying eyes? Do you leave them out and let your family discover your horrible doll passion? Or does your family already know about the dolls and consider them relatives that they want to catch up with while they're visiting?
>>
>>48549872
There is no point in hiding it, imo. I'm grown man, so I can freely decide what a horrible obsession to have.
>>48549256
Beautiful photo, she is so tender, like it very much.
>>
>>48549872
My parents and brother came to visit for Christmas; they didn't know about the doll hobby I developed over the past year. They were displayed in my living room and my mom and dad asked me about them when they first showed up and were going on a tour around the house looking at all the new stuff since they'd last been here. We spent about one minute total talking about them before they moved on to looking at the other stuff and planning out all the remodeling that I had to do. I explained I got the first 1/6 reimu and marisa, thought 'hey this is fun' and got the other two. I told them I liked the process of dressing them up and sharing photos of them with other enthusiasts and my mom basically said 'oh that's so cute!' and moved on.
I kinda do wish I was afforded the opportunity to discuss it in more detail but I wasn't going to start monologuing at length when the other party isn't fully engaged on a topic, and we had plenty of other things to discuss. Oh well.

>>48549840
Yeah, didn't modify it at all but it could do with some taking in around the waist. I got the idea from seeing it on JP doll twitter. Unfortunately I couldn't find any bottles with sweaters at a couple liquor stores, so I ordered it off ebay.

And of course Aria's going to get spoiled. The fate of all doll owners is that their girls have a better wardrobe than themselves. She's already tried on some of Rin's older DD/L outfits and they fit her just fine.

Yeah, there are always a few unclear dolls. Some others are the MDD Marisa, row 4 column 5, or the witch on the sixth row. I tend to err on the side of caution but that means dolls from somewhere else may slip through. I'm not too surprised about the top right one, a bit more about the other but you're most probably right.

Film can be a tricky medium to learn. That's how I started years ago, and I can't tell you how many bad photos I took. Are you taking a class, or did you just decide to give it a go?
>>
>>48564158
I just decided to give it a go, I didn't want to invest in a digital camera in case I didn't like it but something about film I've ended up really liking so I may just do this for a while honestly.
>>
>>48564166
Awesome, it can be a rough journey but I hope you enjoy it. There's nothing like having a perfect shot come out in a dark room for the first time. Good luck!
>>
>>48564188
Thank you, I intend to try and take my dolls out to do photos for the first time somewhere soon so if any of those come out nice, I'll post them here as well.

I used a film lab and they offer scans, this is just the smallest size they offer. They make scanners that get high resolution scans of the film negatives and there is also the setup of using a digital camera and using that to take large resolution photos of your negatives to "convert" them. The latter is worse than the scanners most of the time apparently but is valid.

First outdoor shoot with Alayne and goddamn, posing her is such a pain. I think I need to take her apart and re-tighten all her joints.
Say what you want about Smartdolls and their limited range of motion but when you put them into a pose they stay in that pose.

BJDgallery operator here, I've restructured the site to allow for yearly categorization of uploads from this point on. Unfortunately due to my lack of foresight, this broke existing URLs, so you'll have to update your bookmarks if you have any.

Some of you here may remember my father, who was very tolerant of my doll-adjacent shenanigans (picrel.) The left ctrl keycap on my Corsair K70 RGB broke, so I went looking for new keycaps and found these on a store called bruhtech (bruhtech.com). They also sell on Etsy and one reviewer there mentioned that the space bar doesn't fit the k70. So I also ordered this keyboard along with the caps, and then some switches from Amazon because it didn't come with any and I couldn't seem to remove them from the K70. The keyboard has no branding (it seems there was a sticker on the bottom that was removed) and came with no documentation, so I had to figure out all the functions myself. The seemingly randomly placed Korone keys were meant for other purposes, but I wanted to use them, and three of them coincidentally fit on the rows with the hiragana こ, ろ, and ね keys, and the fourth one fit on the qwerty row so I put it on the W key, I might get another, full-size keyboard because I kinda miss having a numpad, and it's a waste having the keycaps for it sitting in a box.

maybe compromise by grabbing a usb numpad to plug into the keyboard? there's a bunch out there, I know some people pick them up and jerry rig them into DIY streamdecks with autohotkey.

This was my first time making a custom mechanical keyboard, so I don't really have any experience with switches besides the ones I bought, which are "AKKO V3 Fairy Linear Silent Keyboard Switch," and I have no complaints.

That's a good suggestion, but I think I would still prefer a full-size keyboard because it just feels weird to me to not have anything next to the arrow keys, especially when I'm using them.

This becomes funnier when you look at anime figures and, for similar sizes, the anime figures are now more expensive.
