Easily among Miike's most impressive efforts, along with all of his collaborators. And you could tell Miike’s influence all over. 2D animation probably would’ve looked better but the 3D fight scenes go hard as fuck (webm related).

For those who watched Umi no Hajimari, what did you think of it? I definitely enjoyed some aspects (mostly the relationship between Umi and ML) and got quite emotional here and there, but the way certain characters were written in how they treated ML was pretty annoying which ruined the show a bit for me. Also Umi a cute.
>>48451713It is a very good show. The father was really passive, and the mother was a narcissist.Lots of scenes had great acting like the phone call about the death of the mother to her librarian friend.
>>48452127>and the mother was a narcissist. That may be the case. She's actually my biggest gripe with the show. It felt like she was written in a way where she had to do dumb shit for the sake of putting the plot in action, while at the same time the show tried to portray her in a very sympathetic light. It was hard to like her, but I still felt bad for her. I suppose mostly due to her stellar acting.

Clearly none of the writers and the directors read the manga which explains all the important settings altering, important scenes cuttings, and adding unnecessary shit that isn't in the manga. And don't get me started with the cheap cosplay. The actors and actresses were miscast, and their shitty acting skills made it worse.
>>48464261However, I loved the show. It was a good romcom drama for its time slot. And it does not bother me if it was a loose adaptation. The story was very entertaining.

is Tantei Monogatari worth watching?
>>48415492>>48415803The Himizu movie is a butchering of the manga and even if you haven't read it, it's still merely middle of the road in terms of Sono's catalogue.
Anyone watch this? Any good?
>>48454252Kek, treacherous bastard. They're all great though.
>>48470475Yes
>>48470505>butcheringAs a longtime Furuya Minoru fan who read and reread his works, especially Himizu (and Ping Pong Club), for nearly 20 years, what Sono did in his adaptation is nothing short of a masterpiece. The earthquake tragedy as a background to the story and the new twists to the shit Sumida went through actually gave it a different feeling from the manga that is just as good, and there's no better man than Sono to make something original out of the original material. Sono is more than capable of making a 1:1 adaptation, but Sono doesn't do that, he loves to add his own personal prints over his works, and besides that, it's impossible to re-create a perfect copy of Furuya's world into a live-action version, which applies to almost all manga imho, so it's better to have a genius creative auteur like Sono making a film out of it. The result was a masterpiece. Only a great auteur like Sono could make a masterpiece like Himizu a different experience that is as impactful as the original. It reaches the level of apocalyptic bleakness and puts you through an array of emotions you never expected to go through.
>>48470520It was fantastic. It's written by Bakarhythm so you know you're gonna watch something fun. He even won best screenplay award for it last year.

>>48471777>actually gave it a different feeling from the mangaCorrect. It's completely different>that is just as goodNot at all.>1:1 adaptationWouldn't have worked because the story is a serialization and the way it was told was dependent on the format>It reaches the level of apocalyptic bleaknessNot at all. It doesn't have the bleakness nor the humor of the manga. It also completely changes the point since Furuya is basically saying "some people are just born scum, you can never escape your destiny to be scum" and yes, it's bleak but it's also true, there are certain people in this world that never stood a chance.
>>48477432>Wouldn't have worked because the story is a serialization and the way it was told was dependent on the formatSono already made a tv series of another manga, Minna ESPer Dayo, and some of the manga sensibilities were retained, but like I said in my other point you seem to miss, "it's impossible to re-create a perfect copy of Furuya's world into a live-action version". Much of the manga's distinctive and absorbing atmosphere was created by Furuya's unique art style, that's impossible to replicate when you're making a live-action adaptation.>It doesn't have the bleakness nor the humor of the mangaSono never intended it to be the same as the manga, that was obvious the moment the film started when they mentioned the March 11 disaster. Like I said, he's an auteur who loves to add his own personal prints, he doesn't do 1:1 adaptations. What comes next is if you're a fan of his style or not, and that's subjective from one person to another. This is Sono's Himizu, it's different from Furuya's Himizu.
>>48472393They're all great but they're... violent. Except Maboroshi. It's all about what you're more interested in watching.

>>48487294For me, the only miss was Minamikawa. I love the guy too, and he had some great moments, but he's just so obviously on a different level mentally compared to Tsuda that he spoils a bit of the "mystery" by pulling the audience back into world 2.
>>48487294This part genuinely made me crack up
>>48487294Erm...isn't that racist?
>>48488293yes it plays into the stereotype japanese people have about smelly foreignersbut also who cares desu
>>48487425
>>48484650>>48487294They should make both of Meitantei Tsuda and Denki Isu Game a 6-hours Year End SP, three hours each. It's too much of a waste to have such fun popular games and not capitalizing on them.
>>48487425>by pulling the audience back into world 2.But that's the funniest part. Tsuda is brainstorming or wanting to kiss his crush, and Minamikawa is just there tsukkomiing him.
>>48488349Whatever happened to Junior vs Fujimon and Imada vs Higashino? It's been a month since Gekidan Hitori vs Okano and they just stopped there.
>>48487449>Directed by Shinobu YaguchiHis last movie Dance with Me (2019) was such a stinker, I thought he stopped making movies after it. But I wonder why he's making a horror movie when all of his movies are comedy. Wish he'd just make something as good as Waterboys (2001) and Sing Girls (2004).

>>48488293It's literally genetics, it's like complaining about ear wax being wet.>>48488369It is funny, but in the context of the show it's just a little too meta, the premise starts to crumble when you have two world 2 participants, because it starts to overpower the world 1 story. I get why he's there, but it does feel like a bit of a cop out because they know Tsuda would otherwise need tedious prompting for an hour or two to draw the right conclusions.

Based Reiji and Daikichi telling how it isit is looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong
>Ootsuru Himan is only 33 years oldlooks like he's in his 50s wtf
Man, I really thought Evers would make it.
Rigged shit.
Very good final three netas. Was rooting for Shinkuu Jessica but I can't complain.
sry for being esl but Is there any anon remember extremely violent early 00s japanese noir tv-show? all I remember is gangs brutally beat retard in wheelchair, ty in advance
I'm still not sure about letting past winners participate but I suppose Reiwa Roman is talented although I didn't manage to watch their first neta to form a proper opinion. There were some good first-timers like Batteries, Evers and Jockrock but I feel that Tom Brown could really feel hard done this time. Personally I don't agree with the criticism of their 'style' of manzai. There has always been a lot of argument about traditional 'talking' manzai and conte manzai, if the latter qualifies as manzai then I don't see why theirs shouldn't. On another side of the argument you have some of the judges criticizing Daitaku's manzai for being too 'proper'. Frankly I'm quite ambivalent about some of this year's new judges like Ishida and Shibata but I suppose it goes to show the difference in the various judges' character and preferences.
>>48514701I thought Tom Brown were very weak, there wasn't enough there to justify the repetition. When your manzai devolves into funny sounds, you've taken it too far, and you belong in the reject bin with retards like Hollywood Zakoshisho. Daitaku were missing a turn, it was too formulaic and I agree with the judges.Evers and Batteries were robbed, though. I like the idea of having more judges, but the more sensible judges tend to be very tight with their voting and the more retarded judges tend to be a lot more variable, which means 1-2 retards can fuck up the ranking considerably because they can easily cause a 7-10 point swing. I don't mind winners being able to compete again, but I feel like they won a little bit because of "we've never had a 2 time winner before, it'll make a good news article". Ultimately, this year doesn't count because Matsumoto wasn't a judge.
>>48515184I'll just agree to disagree with regards to Tom Brown but I'm leaning towards the scoring of Daikichi and Hanawa for them. In my opinion one aspect of Manzai the judges take crucial note of is rhythm and timing and that's an aspect a lot of people gloss over. I'll just add that their neta could arguably fall in the range of 歌ネタ and we have previously had konbis like Oideyasukoga who falls in this category. This also encroaches into the argument against conte manzai and the limits of it, previously Magical Lovely was questioned by some if their neta qualifies as manzai. Ultimately the boundaries are difficult to define and those who sticks to traditional manzai are always unfortunately handicapped like Wagyu and Knights.Unfortunately I think Batteries' second neta was weaker than their first and their entry in the tournament mirrored Milk Boy's a lot but in the end Reiwa Roman's felt more polished overall. I do agree with your notion about having a 2 times winner however. I was rooting for Shinkuu Jessica initially but I think that they could've done better and that Evers could've easily taken their place.>can fuck up the ranking considerably because they can easily cause a 7-10 point swingAnd that's precisely the problem I had with Ishida and Shibata. Tetsuo clearly fucked up his initial scoring for Reiwa Roman being the top batter but he still tried to maintain the scoring without too much fluctuation.
I liked Tom Brown's neta but it was a slightly weaker version of the one they did at last year's loser's bracket.
>>48515720That was what both Hanawa and Daikichi said iirc, carefully strategizing the use of one's neta is part of the competition I guess. Not like they'd ever win the M1 in all honesty, hopefully they(and Nanamagari) have a better chance in the Second.
I hope a lot of people made themselves comfortable to watch M1 without Macchan and then got traumatized by him being shown right at the beginning.
I think the three finalists were all good, but Reiwa Roman were clearly above the others. While Batteries' and Shinkuu Jessica's second netas were good, they were not just weaker than their first netas, but also had similar patterns. Meanwhile, Reiwa Roman actually dared to use a different style and theme and it was even funnier than their first neta imho. And this is quite impressive since most owarai geinins when they win the first time and get showered by tv offers, CM deals and whatnot tend to slow down, lose their edge or start phoning it in, but these two still made funny materials. A well-deserved win.
I definitely missed Macchan's interactions with the competitors this year. There were barely any bokes from the judges in general.
>>48516769Had the same thought. The judging part was boring without someone joking with the competitors. Kumichan and Macchan were carrying the show.
Why so many judges?
>>48517234Matsumoto's absence made it that dire so they hired as many judges as possible to fill up the void he left.
