Is Full metal panic worth reading? I'm kind of interested but wary after getting nostalgia baited into reading the toaru series.
What are some well-written non-harem isekais?
>>48532470How good is accelworld? The anime felt pretty nice
>>48540289have you ever played a janky ass solodev or small dev team game and thought "holy shit this is so good" despite having not much content and half the game being bugs, both the annoying and the fun kind?AW is the equivalent of that, it's "good" with like, five fucking asterisks to that statementread it anyway it's not that long

>>48539866It's good if you like techno thrillers and mechs, there are a ton of cool shit in second half, begging is a lot more comedy focused, though I liked comedy parts too.

do you guys reckon its best to try and finish a volume in a day instead of dragging it out over the course of a work week
>>48545732>a volume in a dayI'm lucky if I can get more than 15 min. of reading in a day.
>>48539725>Android, Libera https://f-droid.org/en/packages/com.foobnix.pro.pdf.reader/Shouldn't we use something else? This one doesn't respect book css. It's not even been updated for months now.
>>48545920Different anon here. The key is to read in Japanese. If you search for something like 一日中ラノベ何冊読める, you'll find that there are plenty of people who can finish a volume in less than two hours and even read multiple volumes in a day.Of course, that doesn't work if you don't have time to read to begin with.A volume used to take me around 5-6 hours in EN, but in JP I can finish a book in less than 3 hours.
>>48545920How is that possible
>>48545732>a volume in a dayMy attention span is too bad to do that. That only happens if I really really like the book.
>>48545732depends on how much you likeon vacations from uni, i sometimes finish like 3 novels a day--but that's only for the ones i really really like
>>48546269Modern slavery
>>48546238>A volume used to take me around 5-6 hours in EN, but in JP I can finish a book in less than 3 hours. That is frankly not surprising, once shit "clicks" in your head when it comes to japanese you can pretty much run through text at your westoid speedreading speed while actually understanding everything from how well it flows in JP.At that point your only limiting factor is the kanji you have to look up in a dictionary, if any.
>>48546543Another explanation:People tend to subvocalise in their native language. When they learn a new language but not subvocalise it, they naturally learn to speed read it.You can do it with English, too, if you get rid of subvocalisation.
Reading without subvocalizing different character voices in your head seems really boring.
>>48546571i don't think that's it, i do that thing by functionally playing out a well directed anime with movie quality in my head when i read, which by all means should get me slower speed than even english due to the constant pauses while scenes finish, yet somehow it only takes me 5-7 hours to finish a volume in japanese across 1-2 daysmeanwhile reading normally in english does take me about the same time but it's far more boringeven if you subvocalise it, japanese is just more efficient phonetically
>>48546627I know, right?Serious non-fiction is impossible/impractical to subvocalize, while with fiction it's just a pointless and joyless thing you do if you just want to get over with it
>>48546692Only subvocalise new/difficult words. Not subvocalising makes reading faster and what you read more memorable. It's more useful for business/legal purposes, where you have to read hundreds of pages in just a few minutes, but do more than just skim.
>>48545732My jap reading speed is too slow for 1 a day, and I start skimming when I get tired reading.
>>48546571I subvocalize in my second language (English). 終わりだ.
>>48546721Different anon however I agree that not subvocalising just reduces it to joyless textual information. I want to fully visualise and act out what's happening in my head, it's far more interesting to me that way even if it's slower.
>>48546543I really don't think you can speedread in your second language meaningfully faster than your native language, it's more like Japanese can compress more information in fewer characters. I will say that Japanese is a lot easier to skim-read (which I see as distinct from speedreading, which is reading as fast as you can without dropping any of the info/content) because you can scan a page for key vocab easier due to kanji, but I would never do that in a novel. And I'm on team not speedreading dialogue, I read at speaking speed to imagine all the characters' voices and everything. Narration I will speedread or read at a slower pace depending on my mood, regardless of language, though I obviously didn't have a choice but to read slow in Japanese for quite a while until I got good
I noticed that I read VNs much faster than LNs, even unvoiced ones. What gives? I want to get into LNs because I can just read on my tablet/phone.
>>48548769>I really don't think you can speedread in your second language meaningfully faster than your native languageYou can.I can read stuff in english and even current ebonicglish faster than I can in spic. It's a matter of sheer usage, and assuming you quit most westoid social media sites (including 4chan outside of /jp/) or heavily limit their use and focus on only JP content, the point in which you read JP faster than anything else is not that out of reach. This is also an overton window more than it is a set stat sheet, being able to speedread fast also means your normal reading full-comprehension speed increases, pair it with japanese simply being a more efficient and better structured language and reading a full novel volume in "basically playing out the anime in my head" speeds that would take you 2-3 days in english, or even a full week, isn't rare.
>>48548779ものは慣れmaybe you picked a couple LNs that happen to be harder than what VNs you usually read. If you think about it it's technically possible to be an LN only and then try the 暗黒大陸編 and by chance get the impression manga is harder than LNs not realizing it's an anomaly in the medium>>48548798Hmm maybe, I guess I've already read too many English (my native language) fantasy, scifi, spy thriller etc. novels in my formative years by now for that to ever happen to me though. I've tested my JP reading speed and it's slower than the average native after over 2 years of JP but not by a huge margin. At thsi rate I might exceed the native average soonish but I'm pretty sure my English speed is like in the top 1% of natives and will never be matched by my Japanese even if i put 50k hours in, not that I'm unsatisfied with my speed as it is.

>>48546632>playing out a well directed anime with movie quality in my head when i read,Interesting, how do you do it? I started Haruhi as my first LN and I read the narration in Kyon's voice but I can't really imagine much beyond that. With VNs I don't really imagine much because of the sprites and CGs, but with LNs I get a vague image in my mind of the characters and nothing more.
>>48550851Just imagine harder bro.
>>48550851>Interesting, how do you do it?Better comprehension. You'll get better at it as you get better at the language
>>48551123Eh, it's more innate to the person themselves rather than language comprehension. Some people do it naturally and some just can't at all. Heard you can train it though unless you suffer from complete aphantasia.
>>48550851can u imagine a rotating, multicolor apple in full 3d, anon?
>>48551123I can't say I do it when I read books in my native language. But I can believe that it will be different with Japanese just due to its expressiveness.
>>48551539It interested me because I have drawn anime storyboards for fun so I thought it would be fun to direct an anime version of any LN I'm reading in real time. Do you have to actively imagine the backgrounds and characters? I can only hear their voices and vaguely imagine the setting they're in.>>48551573Not really. Maybe just a vague outline of a colored apple but it takes actual brainpower.
I recently got into LNs thanks to Index and I wanted some reccomendations. What are some good, completed LNs that are, preferably, not isekai?
>>48551915No, it's unconscious. It's the opposite in the sense that I would have to actively try to not have an image while reading text information
>>48552433Mushi Uta
Figured I'd read oregairu since for some reason I had been ignoring it but fuck me the latter half is absolute ass. It's in the title but this ain't love comedy and I'm sick of drama
>>48552928The scans for that one are so bad
>>48550851like a lot of things, it's a thing you can train to improve on like a muscle, and this is simultaneously pretty easy but also not that simplestart off simple, look up "4k detailed anime wallpaper" images (or watch a makoto shinkai movie) and start trying to visualize those scenes move and certain background NPCs doing certain actions like stopping to check their phones or picking up a catthen start slowly escalating, have random NPCs talk about their day in those environments (which is also good jp practice, if you still aren't perfectly fluent) and walking back home, focus as much as possible on body language and small movements, that small detail DOES matter and while early on is hard to keep visualized, it gets easier as time passes and you practice morethe hard part is actually fight scenes as you probably guessed, for this you basically need to look up LE SAKUGA compilations on yt (easy to find) and somewhat absorb the movements and how shit looks (harder than it sounds)with fight scenes i found it's better to NOT slowly escalate by going from poorly directed ones all the way up slowly, it's better off to go straight into full blown movie quality right off the bat, but you need to have done the previous step of visualizing detailed environments somewhat consistently for this to not be functionally impossible (small pro tip, avoid anything from studio trigger, it's too stylized and cartoony to be a reliable source of visualization, what you want is the weight and agility of movement to make fight scenes more easily visualizable)paradoxically enough, despite all the shit i just said, if you read a lot of high-power LNs like isekai tends to be, you may want to focus on anime fighting game combos instead https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JjMS2i5OBFc or even DBZ movies and imagine various characters you know doing similar attacksbut yeah if what you read is more "grounded" (for a lack of a better word) then focus on stuff like chainsawman or at most, kimetsu or OG evangelionbtw this is really fucking mentally tiring when you start out, so don't do it for more than a hour a day your first week, later on you can have movie quality fight scenes going in your head 24/7 without breaking a sweat while driving or doing other shit, but it takes some time
>>48554602continuing the post because of character limitbut once you have started to get the hang of it, you are going to have to focus on sound, touch, and even aroma if possibleagain, on normal environment and talking scenes this is not that hard, the hardest part is probably going to have to memorize how does an appealing female smell without killing your social life, but you can somewhat get away with it in public transport if you really focus and don't look directly at anyonejokes aside, wet a plant (or go out after rain) and smell the grass, touch the grass (literally), touch the rocks, smell the rocks (no, seriously), memorize, like REALLY memorize the feel of morning sun on your skin, touch a cat, smell a (clean) cat and dog, and so on, start slowly adding those details to your "movie", because despite how it may sound, this actually makes it EASIER to visualize complex stuffthe hard part is again, fight scenes, because you are going to have to find a way to memorize how does something burning (without smelling delicious) smells, the smell of gunpowder, the feel of being in a hot wasteland, or a humid hell, stuff like thatsmell and touch are the hard parts, you can rely on youtube and anime movies for sound, which is easyyes you can make shit up and fill in the blanks with smell and touch you already know for something else even if it's not accurate like how artists make shit up about anatomy when it comes to fantastical creatures, but it will come down to your own judgementanother thing i almost forgot is voices and music, which is honestly likely the best part, but also the hardest, to the point i only focus on specific VAs and have my own music playing physically while reading to take that load off my brain
>>48554547there are epubs
>>48551915>It interested me because I have drawn anime storyboards for fun soI know someone who's good at drawing who insists to me that he has aphantasia, can't 'imagine' what's happening which is why he doesn't read books. I even asked him if he could do the apple thing and he said he can't. I thought he was bullshitting cause there's no way someone who can draw like he can can't play out book scenes in his head involuntarily while reading, but damn if you're real then I guess he is too
>>48551573wumpa_anon.webm
>>48551915>>48555018You are not special for claiming to have aphantasia.A lot of people that claim to have aphantasia don't actually do, what they have is an atrophied imagination from mindlessly consooming audiovisual media their entire lives.
>>48552433円環少女
>>48552433im gonna need at least 5 examples of what you think "good" is, not necessarily LNs and not necessarily completed either
>>48554602>>48554655This does indeed sound like a workout. I guess it makes sense that I'm bad at visualizing things I didn't focus on remembering too much. I can visualize my favorite illustrations of my favorite characters along with their voices, so it comes down to training, doesn't it? Thank you for the tips.>>48555018>>48555434I don't claim to have aphantasia because I don't even believe these modern diseases are real. It might just be atrophied imagination as the anon is saying. I went a long time without reading books so I'm not surprised. When drawing I just 'think' about what I want to draw and then adjust what I see physically. I can only visualize the impression or feel of the drawing in my mind and not the details.
Latest fight in 暗殺者の卵に転生した is great. If Renge actually died, it'd probably also mean the mind death of original snakeboy and the complete takeover of the isekaied soul. I wonder if that's part of why he's so insistent on killing her. Also wonder if Konji knew about Kokuyou's death miasma. He interfered after Kokuyou used it on the sword saint after all.
>>48555593yeah its basically a mental workoutfrom my experience it works to build off from what you can already do, in my case was imagining meme detailed wallpapers and then started to build off manga actuallyfirst try to imagine extra panels that weren't there, eventually building into only using the manga as a storyboard, then not needing manga at allfor me color was actually the hard part, i had zero issues imagining a full movie quality story using examples from random manga and the LN illustrations, but they were all on that black and white "unfilled" style, which is why i had to use wallpapers to fix that problemin your case you can probably extrapolate talking scenes off illustrations and build from there

>>48563280sounds like projecting when every single notable LN author i have seen in photos is either a scrawny schizo or a painfully average wagiethe former is too busy writing about the theoretical magiology of the sexual act and/or focusing on the emotional relationship aspect to care about sex detailsand the latter just goes to a hostess bar for references (assuming they are not too pussy to even write fade to black sex, let alone the proper deed)probably the closet anyone has gotten to this is the "they fucked like rabbits" jokes from arifureta but those don't really give any details

>>48561688Only about 30% of the smut is on nocturne and the yomu equivalent.About 20% is exclusive to LN-only stories that don't have a WN at all.The rest is spread out across multiple sites that technically aren't WN sites and just personal blogs outright, so good fucking luck finding any of it.
>>48564064>sounds like projecting when every single notable LN authorIt's confusing whether that text comes from the MC's mind (who is a novelist) or the author. >>48566716>it's the author running out of ideas and padding it out with a fourth wall break by revealing their honest thoughtsIt's honestly not surprising that they're running out of ideas given how LN authors are asked to write enough stuff so the company can publish 2-4 volumes a year in order for them to maximize profits and for the franchise to stay relevant.>It also only went down to "not uncommon" during the ironic weeb bubble of covid but shit already went back to normal.Ah yeah, 2021 was a wild year..

Lots of characters with deep seated personal problems, PTSD, drama, etc.

It might be fun, but it definitely strikes me as something that doesn't need to exist honestly. It's the leftover concepts that the author couldn't do on the main plot without breaking it.The start is pretty damn slow, but it quickly spirals out of control into utterly unhinged schizo shit.Worth reading for the novelty alone if anything.

only tangentially related to the thread topic but what typing system do anons use for typing a lot of text in japanese? windows IME is dogshit at kanji conversion, especially for any terms related to otaku media.

Any recommendations for a light novel series that isn't yet another slow burn/takes 3 volumes to get going and instead goes balls to the wall from day one?
>>48595640You do not want those, those crash and burn hard.See: Basically everything that gets popular with normalfags like overlord and rezero.

>>48596017Weird how the 魔女 genre (for the lack of a better nomenclature) is on the rise, but basically nobody is really making a blip about it, even on JP circles. When returner sadboy shit was on the rise people immediately latched onto it, same to otome game clones. But for this? Not even a mention despite the new wave being slightly older than sadboy shit.
>>48597970speaking of sadboy shit, did anything even remotely readable come out of that?
>>48597970Its not on the rise its being pushed hard by publishers 'for some reason' but isn't latching on.Witch and Mercenary is the most popular thus far.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SdkzsCUE6V0https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ciFK_8ap98Yhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vY5ahDzCfBIhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o_B9o2oDqSI
>>48598346i really want to know your definition of latching on when this genre is pretty much displacing isekai now, which no other trend could do for almost a decadeyou mean mainstream normalnigger popularity? that wont happen until at least 2030 when the manga adaptations catch on to volume 2-3 content of their respective witch series
do you have a dark fantasy LN, please?
>>48599206do the usual combo meal of otome survival, mynorgha and highserk assuming you have gone through YS, rezero and overlord then come back when you're done with your homework
>>48599271o...okay
>>48599322fair enough that was probably rude, while i acknowledge it, im not fully apologizing but then again what do you want me to recommend when giving so little guidance as to what your preferences even are? if you asked for mechs and romance that would narrow it a lot, but just dark fantasy is too broad
>>48599351medieval dark fantasy. it may be redundant to you but I want something like berserk (or claymore if theres nothing like berserk).don't worry, you weren't rude, it was funny to read
>>48599271>otome survivalIs this even something that qualifies as "dark"?
>>48599404Unfortunately the best examples I can think of are also manga...namely 牙の旅商人 and タワーダンジョンI don't know any LNs that do this kind of thing but I haven't read many
>>48599577I know these manga. don't worry, thank you for helping me. Miura truly catch the feeling of a real medieval dark fantasy. Indon't know why other authors cannt do the same, either manga or LN
>>48598928>this genre is pretty much displacing isekai nowIt isn't, niche like this will never do that and the most popular one witch and the mercenary for example is just another narou-kei with the exact same setting, they go from a sort of low tier magic continent to an isekai continent basically with the exact same setting and tropes.
>>48599811And I should add btw that it's not witches exclusively Dengeki has been really pushing this girl with superpowers controlled by a government agent(MC) genre but they're all flopping. The gist of such type of stories are that MC usually works at a government job as a policeman/investigator/agent and is tasked with babysitting troublesome or sometimes dangerous individuals such as witches/fay/women with dangerous superpowers with whom MC builds relationship overtime.A few VNs also tried it https://vndb.org/v24110Didn't work out though. Somebody over there thinks it will stick but eh tough luck, I don't mind them though some of them are fun.
>>48599639Is dark fantasy just the visual aesthetic?
>>48589547>chuni military ln....Speaking of military LN, are there any military LNs with characters that criticize civilians living a comfy life who moralize and grandstand about how "war is bad"? Thinking of picking up 86 because it portrayed soldiers in a way I like.
>>48600036Not only estheatic. The themes covered are disturbing or frightening themes, rather dark and very shocking for the reader. Example: rape, murder, torture, etc. but also a merciless world, always a misfortune or sadness (often forgotten point of view). mature
>>48600360>Example: rape, murder, torture, etc. but also a merciless world, always a misfortune or sadness (often forgotten point of view). matureI have seen literally all of these even on fairly upbeat series, hell even arifureta itself only really lacks the rape and that's it.I fail to see what are you talking about specifically when even kagejitsu has these aside from the rape as well.
>>48600736well sorry I can only ask you to go watch the definition on internet
>>48600856I'm going to assume the definition is "it FEELS dark and mature" unless proven otherwise.Or do you want me to call lazy dungeon master a dark fantasy despite it's borderline konosuba tone given the last definition you gave me?
>>48600360I think the most important thing here is a merciless or capricious world (with enough unfortunate events to remind you of that) + plus a sort of gritty aesthetic. Something like Shingeki is very close to being dark fantasy like the four titles mentioned if some knobs/dials were twiddled with>>48599404>>48599577Or Vinland Saga if it had more fantasy elements
>>48600736why are you being so autistic over this? kagejitsu still has an upbeat tone overall. he obviously means something like the start of arifureta where it was actually dark, until it stopped being that. a series that's just hajime going through the dungeon solo and then keeping that same tone throughout the series. unfortunately i also only vaguely remember manga like that, no LN come to mind
>>48600916This just makes me loop back to the original question with a small addendum:Is dark fantasy just the visual aesthetic and feel?

Any light novel where a girl makes fun of asians for having small boobs?I will also accept berating humans or elves for having small boobs.
>>48613665really depends on who you ask but TLDR publishers and some affiliates tend to host writing contests where people submit their scripts and get run through a judge group and sometimes a public reader vote depending on the particular contesttho some contests are straight on on narou and yomu, and other WN sites, but they are just a segment and not the majoritythe winners (and sometimes runner ups) tend to get anywhere from guaranteed publishing as a LN, to sometimes even a manga adaptation depending on the contestnow you may think, "well that sounds cool, babysat by both writing judges and proper editors? sign me up to read those" and you would be right, for like the first 1-2 volumes which have had months if not years of planning and refining in advancethen they get properly serializedand then they tend to crash and burn so hard they would make blimps blush, because one thing is writing shit to get a good grading from a judge and following that meta, and another is being able to quickly plan a long running story and constantly put out volumes while following the structure and level of quality you set a precedent forit's basically like winning a drag race with a car that has a turbine strapped to it, then being forced to do a long off-road rally marathon with the same carvery few people make it and contest winner writing styles tend to be very similar due to following the "impress the judges" meta to boot
>>48613699>乙女ゲー世界はモブに厳しい世界です gets shit on constantly because yomu is a schizo, but it's actually really fucking good because yomu is a schizoHow the fuck can you faggots stand Leon being such a faggot? Do you find it relatable?
>>48614196Meh he's not that terrible. Besides, there's more shit people than him in the story. Like his family for example.
>>48614086Also I think there's just a lot of talented people out there who can come up with great story ideas that practically write themselves, and then once the first couple arcs are completed actually keeping things going takes raw writing skill that most said talented creatives don't have until they've built up a lot of experience/know-how. Like a guy who can make a great/catchy punk rock song or video game BGM loop trying to write a full-scale piece of music
>>48614478i genuinely think a lot of hate is just from people baited from the first 3 volumes into thinking he would be like one of those chinky BY THE ROOTS fags that westoids love for whatever reason, only for him to end up with actual depth later on, which for whatever reason makes them seethecall it anecdotal evidence but the hate seems to be concentrated on EOPs as well, which just reinforces my prejudices

>>48615191its not, but it would at least make it entertainingin cases like tondemo the entire setup is meant to go on forever due to the MC having no real goal and just going through the motions for exampleunhinged shit is not going to suddenly make it have a road to a planned ending, but it would at least make it fun to read
>>48615083It's like two people of whom one is probably a sperg who self identifies as schizo so made schizo his entire personality
>>48615122I don't think that's boring as long as the characters go through real difficulty in the conflict. >>48623375The setting was fun and I don't mind the protagonist being a sociopath. There was far too much setup for what was often lukewarm results though, and it just wasn't satisfying to read.It was good at hinting at shit to string the reader along, which often just ended up like above. The protag's goal was also too abstract and it was hard to connect his actions to it.Bit of a shame since I liked Akatsuki no Goei. cool. so i've read a bunch myself from various publishers, in fact it's how i learned japanese over the last couple yearshowever i don't know *anyone* else who reads jp ero slop so i must turn to you lot for advice/recs or at least in search of other people who are into this stuff. apologies in advance for the wall of texti seem to only be able to enjoy ero stories with a single dominant male character because i self-insert to a fault (any surprise gangbang in chapter five due to "whoring my bitches out" mentality completely turns me off), with or without noncon/rape…>"just read shoujo romance anon" …and - more than one but not too many submissive female characters (two or three is perfect)- no surprise "all the girls are subs, except this one woman who has the protag going mommy? sorry, mommy? mommy? with her"- ideally with the girls interacting emotionally with each other and also interacting…sexually…during sex instead of just taking turns- oyakodon/shimaidon is great (which in combination with the previous means incest is hot when it's between girls. it's especially forbidden love)- ideally with a bunch of 「孕ませて〜」(or, well, 「いや、妊娠いやぁぁ」 for that matter) and/or pregnant ending- no loli female leadsthere's a lot of france.jp eroslop where it's just "i drug this bitch, then i drug this other one, take a video of her while i fuck her, now she is completely at my mercy, the rest of this story is now completely miserable, i knock them up and then throw them away" which i can get off to, maybe, but don't really *like*. drugs-based plots are so boring and really i like it when there's some amount of affection and a sense of ownership therei want more, like, painstakingly 調教-ing a pair of haughty 令嬢姉妹 and eventually breaking them into happy, loving, but still kind of tsundere wives. unfortunately i have almost never come across this, maybe only in the 三姉妹 story below (but there the girls sort of break themselves, it's pretty funny but still hot)stuff i've liked:- カノママは初恋のひと。 母と娘のトリプルプレイ (first thing i ever completed in japanese, i've reread it since)- 美人三姉妹 恥辱の潜入捜査- 洋館の母娘 蜜肌のW報酬 - もっとそばに来て【三密母娘と僕】 (very sweet)more 凌辱 ones:- 淫獣の覚醒: 都合のいい隣人肉玩具- 肉襲の刃: 妻の母、妻の姉、妻の親友を- 囚籠[オリ] 妻の母・妻の姉 (this one is great)- 孕ませ権、買います
>>48624688incidentally, i'm trying to branch out of ero shit into actual novels—i have a long list—but in the meantime i want to dip my toes into the wide world of WNs or LNs that aren't straight-up pornso i'd also be interested in WNs or LNs with fantasy/adventure/… stuff with a romance subplot that's like this (generally dominant male lead, doesn't have to be overly *into* running after women, but if it comes up, it's done properly and not in donkan harem mc fashion or あの、えっと、ぼく fashion)romcoms meeting those criteria (but not porn) would be cool too. i love a good "bullying my kouhai/senpai/douryou/…" story, that but with a proper "two kouhais" setup would be kino
>>48624696Maybe史上最強オークさんの楽しい種付けハーレムづくり Its an LN and is relatively smutty. Wouldn't call it 調教 but the protag convinces female characters to fuck him, who initially don't want to.I would say it's fun and doesn't take itself too seriously.
I read this one smut because I liked the writer's H game.或る銀髪蒼眼天才魔術師の屈服~異種受胎用魔子宮への堕落~
I want a honzuki but without the nobles and all that stuff. Just the original commoner cast growing up would be my ideal story.

>>48630316>Actually I'm surprised you could stand shoujo romance at all, sex or otherwise, I'm surprised to know anyone that isn't a woman can.what can i say, seeing a cute girl get flustered and horny and think either 純愛 or degen thoughts about feeling loved and owned and whatnot is cute, whether it's from a second-person 男性向け pov or first-person 女性向け povi read a shoujo manga a year or two ago where the bf was affectionate towards the girl's pet dog and the girl felt jealous and immediately started daydreaming for several pages about him leashing her and taking her on walks and petting her and putting her in a crate at night…which, you know, from personal experience, some women do this. i love womenultimate kino would be fempov but switching between two girls fighting over the same guy's attention and eventually going "i hate you. what if we kissed" to each other and so on. もううう、Xちゃんばっかりずるい type stuff is so good lolunfortunately it seems that female bisexuality except as a very occasional extension to hetero stuff in 男性向け stuff is still beyond the comprehension of the japanese mind (or amazon.jp/narou/etc search-fu skill issue on my part)(you will observe that i have a vaguely fujo-type mindset here (i refuse to say hime-anything) so maybe that partially explains why i find shoujo stuff enjoyable)>It's not exactly rare either, smut tends to be a decent driving force behind a lot of people, but it always makes me think "holy shit what a madlad"i read tons of doujins in tl for a couple years before i discovered that particular novel from the illustrator's imageset on exh and by that time i had already conditioned myself to be…receptive to tildes and spoken hearts and sentence-final -もの and generally japanese/engrish ways of phrasing horny shit and i quickly got into nukige and ero novels/lns from that point on. it was over before it startedthe madlad part, if there is one, is that i am quite good at keigo and some verb forms without having to think about them because i read tons of bdsm-heavy vns early on (bishop etc) and so しゃぶらせられたい or horrible させていただきます nonsense parses effortlessly to me
>>48630746>i have a vaguely fujo-type mindset herewell really it's more of a "poly" thing but i hate the term and generally it doesn't mean anything "fixed" like thisreally it's what i wish more "harem" stories were: not an idiot mc spending ten seasons falling face-first into ten different cardboard cutout personality girls' tits before he chooses one leading up to the last frame/panel in which he almost kisses one, but rather mc plus an actual *harem* in the traditional sense with relationships between the women in it and hopefully everyone in love ahhsee, anon, i talk about this like a woman almost. it's no surprise i like shoujo romance>>48624809>史上最強オークさんの楽しい種付けハーレムづくりlooks interesting but every single amazon.jp review is 1 star it seemsanyway, smut/romance aside, i might start reading katanagatari, always wanted to read that (well, togame is cute, but the appeal of the story is mostly the chuuni shit)
>>48630845years of reading have taught me to never trust reviews of any kindonce you actually enter niche territories it becomes a matter of something reaching the right people as "quality" becomes meaningless and unquantifiableas much as i have seen utter garbage get constant glowing reviews yet get masterpieces get rated poorly, it inevitably makes me admit maybe those glowing reviews indeed mean it's a masterpiece and it did reach the right people, it was just not for me
is there any way to get narou and yomu to display text vertically?my cope so far has been on narou to just download the PDF and read that but is there a better way im too stupid to see?

>>48624688My favorite kind of r18 slop is the 逆転 genreWhether it's the moral-逆転 or the beauty-逆転, it's just my favorite world setting for R18 stuff. I guess it's the perfect self-insert fantasy-fullfillment for me?その日世界が変わった and 逆転異世界で嫁き遅れSランク女冒険者たちに迫られています are prob my two favorites, the first one is just the perfect amount of yandere + choukyou + family harem, and I like how possessive the MC is of his slavesThe second one is just very nice, wholesome, enough fantasy elements to keep me interestedA third, if I had to rank them, would be 男女比1対99の世界で、男性アイドル始めました, I really enjoyed this at the beginning but there's very little ero early on, and I'm pretty sure the author just used the R18 as a premise to get people hooked because from a certain point on there are just 0 R18 elements, so I dropped it eventually, very sadI read many more but these are the ones that really left a positive impressionA few that I heard good things about/am interested in, but still haven't read:格付けされる世界で生きていくゴルダナ帝国衰亡記 ~ハーレムはあきらめてください~女難戦記男女比1対10の女性上位の軍隊で、エースパイロットの俺だけが男の話男性が管理される社会を「ディストピア」と呼ぶのなら逆転世界で貧乏貴族に転生した俺〜少し優しく接しただけの軍人貴族の女の子たちに、ヤンデレ依存されて金と権力で婿という名の性奴隷にされてドロドロに愛されている〜Also, if anyone has any recommendations for this subgenre, pleeeeeeease share themI need moreThanks
>>48644966>ゴルダナ帝国衰亡記 ~ハーレムはあきらめてください~read this one firstit's "good" but it's written in an extremely fucking annoying way, if it's not an immediate deal-breaker or you don't even notice the issues then it should be a good ride
>>48644976My jp level is not that great, long interconnected sentences and annoying, very-little-dialogue writing styles are the worst for me atmI'll give it a spin soon tho
>>48645008oh no that's not the issue, the actual prose while not simple, it's rather not a pain in the ass, doubt even a N5 would have that much trouble with it compared to something more complex like say, slime, bookworm or tsuki ga if they are really committed to dictionaryfaggingthe actual writing style is what is fucking annoying, and unfortunately i can't really describe it further than this because i dunno how
>>48644966going to check out your list, thanksi'm curious what you mean by >the moral-逆転 or the beauty-逆転and 逆転 in general (re: the second, i hope you don't mean ugly bastard type stuff)desu the only kind of 逆転-in-title i'm aware of (note that i have looked at very little narou type stuff, so i only know what the publishers pick up) is 逆転 where the title begins 童貞だったぼく or ぼくのことを馬鹿にしていた or whatever and the plot is just "a bunch of horny women are attacking me. help" or "i got a breeding pass and no woman is allowed to reject me now" with a male lead who (in my eyes) ultimately has 雑魚 and/or coward mindset>yandere + choukyou + family harem, and I like how possessive the MC is of his slavesoh i love the sound of that (assuming male lead is the yandere, or if it's a yandere girl it's the needy pathetic type rather than mc getting tied to a chair and getting turned on from it) wdym family harem exactly>very little ero early ondesu i don't mind this at all in a romance story. i have sufficiently female mindset about these things that sometimes the hottest parts of an ero ln/nukige for me are bits where everyone has their clothes on and it's just some sort of relationship developmentif you mean it just goes some non-romance/sex direction, oh well. then it just has to be judged on the merits of the new plot direction>>48645008やればできる、がんばれ
>>48644626you're probably better off with the default kindle software than pdfs tbqh. The only faults with it are the slow look-ups and books from some sources working better with .kfx files (to convert, install the KFXoutput extension on calibre).
every time i think of wasting money on an ereader im reminded by someone how much of a fucking pain in the ass they are, especially for JP text
>>48645273Unless you're looking up every word you see or are an ankifag addicted to mining words, default kindle and kobo work just fine. People buy 350$+ android readers with fast processors and >3GB RAM just so can they can use yomichan, anki and try to read manga on an eink screen.
>>48645413pretty sure even if i needed constant lookups it would be faster to look shit up by radicals (assuming there's no furigana and guess by phonetic components failed) than deal with clunky ass android interfaces and lookup dictionaries
>>48645256That's how I did it till now but I had to use cable to physically connect with pc to transfer and manage books using calibre, if I want it to have correct metadata and covers. Accessing my calibre server as a wireless device or through opds is the sole reason I jailbroke it.>>48645273Eh, I don't really regret my purchase. It definitely increased the amount of my reading (250 books in my first year with ereader compared to 100 books the year before). It's less about them not working with jp text (the inbuilt reader worked flawlessly, at least the kindle's) and more about trying to integrate them into the existing setup/flow, and from what I see it's only really an issue with kindles.
>>48645027>>48644976You sure it's the writing style and not the protagonist's inner monologue pissing you off?

>>48647840>男の子どうしなのにI see I'm not the only degenerate that gets off to this line and variations of it.
>>48647840probably obviously not the advice you are looking for, but try to not translate inside your head, just try as much as you can to understand the raw text as-isnow only it is way faster, counter-productively it is also far easier once you get used to it>but im doing it to translate for other-dont lol, eops deserve nothing>but its my literal job!mtl it and cash in your paycheck
>>48647897Sometimes, Fujoshis can be right.I'm not all that into yaoi, but I enjoy forced bisexuality enough to try translating it because the girls were forcing male friends to pleasure each other. Wish I could find LNs that actually have it, instead of pixiv mangas.
>>48647956I'm doing it for my own pleasure more than anything else, just because i'm not good enough to read the Japanese text naturally.
>>48647840Why does it read like poetry...
>>48647975>just because i'm not good enough to read the Japanese text naturally.you are, believe in the me that believes in youto answer your original question, the TL is skirting the line of trannylation a bit too close but the only real mistake is that "huh?" instead of another "lol" but that's probably nitpicking, or rather the last line in general but there's no real way to 1:1 TL it to english
>>48647980I type out the text the way I see it and because I can't stand reading in different formats, I just base my translation off the Japanese format, which means using the same exact line breaks. TL;DR: Autistic behavior

Like in theory you'd think translating porn lines is easy as shit, but anything you come up with will be lame in english compared to the Japanese line.
>>48648011That's natural outcome of anything even slightly complex prose wise in english being associated with fart huffing "intellectuals", or worse, the trash they write.
>>48647994>SpoilerThanks for that. Yeah, I was thinking about just keeping another "lol", but the context was that the girl was talking to a boy about actually going through with the blowjob, so two lols didn't really read right to me. >>48648005I am talking about the japanese text but yeah, the tl reads a bit like that too. But the original text is actually poetic, when looked at mora (or more like its analogue in my language because I don't know mora rules perfectly and jp transliterates one to one phonetically to my language). The first one is 11-6-11-16-6 (intervals of 5) and the last one is 4-7-12-7.

Generally this means that the previously ugly/normal MC, suddenly finds himself at the top of the food chain, while the female leads are suddenly considered extremely ugly, and will therefore easil flock to the MC who can accept them despite/thanks to their looksType 2 is moral reversal. Essentially women become the sexual aggressors in the relationships, while men are the ones who are tasked with protecting their purity, and are the ones being chased around, often having to fend off the women's advances. Most of the times this is explained in-world from a huge imbalance between the sexes (like 1:4 male to female, sometimes much more extreme)Both kinds can come either from an isekai trope, reincarnation, future travel, viruses...anyway I love it very muchAlso with "family harem" I meant that the MC eventually also gets his hands on the female lead's family, and not just her, despite being fairly "loyal" in his own way towards her> i have sufficiently female mindset about these things that sometimes the hottest parts of an ero ln/nukige for me are bits where everyone has their clothes onI can concord with this statement, generally reading pages upon pages of bland sexual descriptions that are always samey and moans, I prefer the leading-up to it part, but in the case of that WN it's really hard to describe, feels like a complete change in focus; if I had to guess, the author may want to have it published as non r-18 eventually? No clue
