I know one guy who learned english mostly by reading math papers for his degree and talking to people online. Very good at english, but super quiet in person. He's a lot better than he realizes.

But I think most people probably won't have the motivation/desire to do as well in those scenarios. English is also a lot more prevalent online than most languages so yeah, they had a bit of an advantage.
