And here's the gang all together. Miku also finally got some festive drip. Little horror story, I switched Alayne from a vinyl to a resin body about two month ago. I had planned to print a proper adapter for her head but lack of time and lazyness meant that she was still using an improvised piece of plastic to hold her head down and keep the elastics strung. Well that piece of plastic just broke while posing her. Without the adapter to hold the elastics her body instantly went limp in my hands, like she just died. Kinda felt horrifying...

hi guys and girls! does anyone here have experience with 1/3 scale dolls? are they too big? should I just get a 1/4 as my first instead? not sure exactly what to go for either but my budget is about 1000 including clothes
>>
>>50495072
Almost all of the dolls in this thread are either 1/3 or 1/4 scale dolls. They are bigger than you think, but too big is going to depend on your space. 1/3 girls are around 60cm tall, and 1/4 about 45cm. 1/4 girls tend to have a younger appearance, where 1/3 girls tend to be more mature in figure. This isn't something you need to rush into making a choice about, and you should pick the doll that appeals most to you. Check out the guide in the OP for more information, including more about clothes, and where to buy dolls from. Good luck on your doll journey!

>>50495072
How big is too big is going to be up to you and what kind of space you have to have them in. Suigintou here is 60cm, but the doll next to her is only 27cm. For what it's worth, neither 1/3 nor 1/4 dolls fit well on your average shelves as they tend to be 12 inches at most between shelves most of the time.

Hello anon! It really depends on what you personally are interested in. 1/4 (40cm) and 1/3 (60cm) are both very popular and well-supported sizes as far as clothing, accessories, and other option-parts are go. It can be harder to find props and furniture for 1/3-scale dolls; 1/4-scale tends to have more options available on that front because they are more likely to be in-scale to 18" doll (American Girl, et al) props -- but you can make it work either way. $1000 is also a very solid budget to start out with. Would you prefer an anime-style doll, or a more realistic one? Do you want a cute doll with a younger appearance, or a cooler, more mature doll? Once you decide on factors like that, you can narrow down which doll is the doll for you. Picrel is some dolls from 40-60cm wearing the same outfit and accessory to give an example of how they tend to differ aesthetically.
>>
>>50495086
thank you, as for appearances I guess I favour something that looks around mid to late 20s. do you think that would be more 1/3 scale? I might wait until I can see some in person or I'll give 3d printing a go first, but I do like the idea of just buying a ready to go doll.

And for further reference here is an old photo of a 60cm Obitsu hybrid (her name is Clover) sitting on my father's shoulder. I've found it's a good illustration of just how large 60cm really is.

>>50495095
If you want a more mature-looking doll, 60cm aesthetics will probably be more in-line with what you have in mind.
>>
ah sorry I didn't see the extra replies

>>50495092
I would possibly looking at a custom display shelf. both your dolls are really pretty by the way
may I ask what model she is, I really like her face
>>50495093
I think I may go 1/3 because I would like just one doll. I will make her a nice display and I'm ok working with fabrics and whatnot to make such a display (not very good at miniature clothing however)
as for between anime and realistic, it's a really hard choice. I think I like anime style that leans a little realistic, especially with blush and eyes
maturity around mid 20s look I think

Aw, I love seeing photos of your dad and the dolls. Thanks for posting.

>>50495072
Good budget! I think based on your tastes, I'd just bite the bullet and go with 1/3. Because it's your first doll, I would suggest you purchase a doll that already has the faceup (face paint and other facial customization) you like. Commissioning and/or DIYing that part is its own journey in this hobby. Wigs, clothes, and shoes are the easy part, especially with 1/3 dolls. The hard part is controlling yourself.
>>
>>50495133
ah I didn't consider the face paint. I'm guessing my skills of being able to apply makeup to myself don't translate at all to doll makeup
>>
>>50495151
Actually id say it definitely applies technique wise, just materials are completely different
>>
I just got a new doll from Alice but I'm not thrilled with the free wig I got during the event, and it's been forever since I ordered a wig for any of my dolls, what are some good shops I can find 1/3 scale wigs at? I'm not sure how up to date the guide is but I figure it can't hurt to ask
>>
get new computer parts (storage) or more dollies? any 1/4 makers have faces that ain't too babyish?
>>
>>50495372
The last two wigs I got were from Cotin Doll. They are a bit more expensive compared to chinese sellers but look amazing. They do tend to focus more on anime hairstyles and colors though, not sure if that's what your looking for for a resin doll.
>>
>>50495372
Cotin Doll, Licht, ACBJD (as with all things,) and LeekeWorld are all good shops I've gotten things from. You can check out Parabox/Obitsu as well -- they're not the best, but they've got standardized offerings in literally every fucking size imaginable and several I think they invented.

We've already ordered for the year. There may be one left available; I'm waiting on responses from an anon that indicated interest but hasn't responded. Check back regularly in mid-January; if they haven't responded by then I'll make it available to the first anon to fill out a form I post.
Otherwise, you're free to print out your own and go for a DIY approach. It's designed for 12x12 pages, but you could obviously resize and print on 11x17 or something like that and scale/trim to fit. the design files are available here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1cv_i9JaxHAj3Azy05BsqA3ULWui1_gGD/view?usp=drive_link
And the finished calendar .pdf available here (huge file for print quality; like 900MB): https://drive.google.com/file/d/1BQeNxtcW3hG-uI0GZ52BM9IywBRamUQ5/view?usp=sharing
I also realized just now that I messed up the doll names on the back of the calendar; for some reason I didn't instantly realize the 3x3 name grid didn't match the 4x3 month preview grid. I'm sorry, Toobie, Lacy Anne, and Tiara.

Miku would like to show off her new kimono! I have also learnt the process of putting one on, and I have a much higher appreciation for people who wear them. Its almost embarrassing how long it took me, and it still isn't perfect, but I'm happy she now has one to wear. Regardless, now I need to keep an eye out for a more fitting hair ornament and shoes that match a little bit better (I was not paying $60 for the Volks shoes.) Also, for people who are more knowledgeable than I am, what is the "adjustment pad" that came with the set? Its a thin pillow with elastic strapping sewed onto it. Is it for adding extra bulk around the waist for straighter silhouette?
And, before you say anything, I've fixed the exposed corner at her feet and the obi covering the loose fold. Its funny all the errors you notice once you get the pictures off of your camera

I think its for the waist.

>Is it for adding extra bulk around the waist for straighter silhouette?
That's exactly what it's for. Traditional kimono are not intended to fit the form of the body; the torso down is more or less intended to be one big tube shape, not accentuating bust and hips.
>I have also learnt the process of putting one on
Everyone goes through this. Just wait until you have to learn how to tie a Hakama. It'll go a lot quicker but you'll go through similar struggles again.
At any rate, your Miku looks quite cute and the shoes/ornament complement the hair and eyes so I wouldn't fret too much about those. Maybe adjust the ornament placement so it's not dangling right in front of her eye but overall good job. Fabric quality on the garment looks stellar, where'd it come from? You also got the left over right correct for which side folds over the body first, and she's not dressed as a corpse.

Ah, thanks! In retrospect, looking up videos of the set specifically would have been a smarter thing to do than reading through kimono guides. I guess that means I'll have to take it all off and dress her up once again to see if I like how it looks... I will say that looking through all the different ways to tie an obi has got me interested in trying to tie one for her too instead of using the clip-on included with the set
>>50502558
Thanks. For what its worth, I adjusted her hair ornament afterwards too. It had been more out of the way when I put it on the first time, but I didn't clip in enough hair, so it had slowly slipped down as I kept moving her around.

That's the rub, isn't it? Long hair is extremely pretty, but it really is a struggle sometimes. Like, I feel like I just need to think about it and it starts to puff up and get tangled. Maybe, one day, I'll think more about getting a short haired doll (my planned next one is going to have hair past her knees ahhhh)
>>
>>50507462
Styled long hair is my bane. my two with straight long hair is basically flawless. The two with wavy long hair are disasters
>>
>>50507362
cute smile! i’ve never done a faceup myself, and it may just be my display, but i wonder if layering a slightly lighter/warmer brown tone on your additions might help them to blend in a little bit more softly, plus maybe extending your lines a little bit further inwards towards the center? i really like the shape you’ve defined, but it looks a bit dark/grey to me as if the shadow is kind of harsh, if that makes sense!
>>
>>50507645
Yeah, I think you're probably right. I tried to bring the line in more into the mouth, but the sealant the original faceup artist used was not happy with my medium (watercolor pencil), so I couldn't get it to show. In person and at a normal focal length it's not as stark with the color, but a lighter tone would've been better. Oh well, I'm too damn nervous to go in with acetone and take it off to try again.
she may just have this smirk for a while and then get sent back to her original artist for a better one

Based. DDH03 (that is, Dollfie Dream Head #03) immediately comes to mind, picrel. It's a standard option and should be easy to acquire, too. DDH16 also comes to mind, but I don't think you can just buy that one -- someone more knowledgeable than me, can you confirm if that one is Dream Choice limited? (As an aside, did Volks really discontinue a bunch of their old head sculpts? Disappointing if so.)
>>

I'm more interested in "attempting to capture the spirit of the character" than necessarily caring if it is vinyl or resin, since I own both. I don't care if I have to turn an existing character into her either, so spare no expense, I think this will be harder to shell than other dolls due to the expression range of the series.
03 is pretty close since the face seems more dour maybe?

Man, I've been eyeing this for months, and didn't realize they already made 3 batches, and right now, as a non doll owner, I feel like she'll be cool to have, but at the same time, looking through the photos here, it feels like a big responsibility or something that I feel like I may not be able to do, such as, posing, taking pics etc. I don't think I'll be doing that.
But maybe posing her and drawing? I don't know...
Still not sure if I should buy her or not. Also, seems like for that site, you gotta be a resident, so I guess I have to use a proxy, but I haven't done that for a very long time.
I don't know why I'm asking this, but do you think I should even buy it? I'd feel weird if they release her sister, then I'll have 2 dolls lol
>>
>>50513289
You can love your doll in whatever way you want anon, I just talk to my dolls and dress them, I don't really do the photos thing, I don't have the talent. I make things for them though and dote on them.
Drawing her could be good too!
Also I just placed an order on there for a wig using Amazon pay and there was no problem with thr shipping address or anything, but maybr it's different if you're buying a doll?

Yea I tried making an account in dolk, but it says Japan residents only, and the Amazon thing is JP, not sure if they'd even ship it directly to the US. I've asked a friend there, but still undecided. I mean, I want to get her, but at the same time, I feel like, since I don't even come here that much, (but appreciate you Anons), that I might not be the right person? Maybe I won't know where to put her? It's such a duality. I mean, she is 40cm, and not sure what will happen in a couple of years, since the delivery is in November 2027
Don't get me wrong, I wanna get one, at least a Rozen Maiden themed doll for my first, that is very cool, but man, I feel like for a week or a month, it would be nice. But following that, I wonder what might happen. I'll probably look at her, but might not interact with the doll after.
Though, this kind of opens some doors for new hobbies, like learning to sew small dresses and such, and maybe customizing doll parts. I like working with resin (GKs etc), but I don't get to do it that much.

Karin is cute, we have a few here. I did the same and I think it was worth doing for my first 1/3 scale doll. Some things to consider:
Going with the pre-done faceup is going to be cheap relative to commissioning or figuring out auctions but obviously limits customization.
Karin is flesh colored, a lot of aftermarket stuff is semi-white, if this matters to you.
Consider eyes or wigs as customization options if that appeals to you.
She comes with just a nightgown, so obviously get some clothes for her with your order too.
Calculate out ordering from volks jp and ordering from volks usa. It's often cheaper (especially with the weak yen) from jp.
Say goodbye to $1000, look forward to your photos
>>
>>50514881
omg I think you legitimately just saved me about $250 because I was going to order from the US store (I'm in Australia).
as for flesh colour I don't mind too much. I don't plan to alter her heaps (maybe design and 3d print some parts for her)

as for clothing I was thinking of trying to make some myself with my grandmother and mum because they're good at sewing (I'm just ok), but I may try and get her a set in the mean time
>>
>>50514865
It's tradition at this point, at least in my opinion.

>>50514827
Karin is very cute, in my opinion! If she appeals to you, anon, you should go for her!

>>50512527
She's stunning! I hope I can adopt one one day.
>>
>>50514902
Oh yeah lol definitely don't order from US then. The JP site works fine for international orders.
Sewing its its own rabbit hole to go down. Sewing doll clothes is more difficult than regular work, on average due to the scale. Get one or two outfits to start while you build your wardrobe.
And you may want to order a couple different hands to go with her if you think they'd be worth it. Warning: hands are stupid expensive for what they are, but I'm not aware of great alternatives if you want a variety of hand poses. I think some other anons have articulated hands from third party vendors.
>>
>>50514929
alright I think I will!

>>50514951
thank you, I really appreciate the insight. I may order a set of hands in that case

The one that says DDf3 has a more recent, updated body design. They look functionally the same, but the internal skeleton is changed to pose more fluidly in the DDf3. The hip joint is also a sort of love-it-or-hate-it situation; it does have a better range of motion, but it can also be fiddly and hard to work with. It is up to the individual whether the extra cost is worthwhile for them!
>>
>>50514865
Hell yeah!
>>
>>50514991
ohhh I see, thank you so much for knowing this. would you be able to elaborate on the hip joint, is it like a set it and forget thing or is it like it comes undone easily?
>>
>>50515006
different anon, but i've not had issues with it. The DD-f3 2.0 however, I've had issues with coming apart. Most of the joints you can adjust with screwdrivers. P1 or P2, depending on the joint. If they give you trouble, look up disassembly videos on youtube or consult the manual (japanese, but has pictures). loctite thread locker or nylock nuts can help if you have trouble. For me, it was the shoulder joints that needed the most attention. Nylocks (M3 i think) were the soloution

I used gold enamel paint for the lashes using the enamel over lacquer technique. You can paint outside the lines and then clean up the excess with enamel thinner and it won’t affect the lacquer (Mr Hobby) underneath. Left is before, right is after.

I do like them but I don't like hard hair. I just want a scaled down Dollfie type doll to get me through ;_;

Karin is a standard model, so she's not likely to go anywhere anytime soon. Hang in there, anon. Make sure you're safe and sound before taking in a doll.
>>
>>50522703
you too sister make sure to post pics if you get one!
>>
>>50522788
it says on volks site that she was discontinued

"The production of the long-loved Standard Model "DDS Karin (DD-f³)" will end in September 2025.
From now on, sales will end once all stores are sold out.

Congrats! That pic shows her hair with so much styling gel on.

Sometimes they re-release a "renewal" version. It can always wait. You might even find one in the second hand market for slightly cheaper.

I know it will get easier but I miss being able to buy things for fun. I'm not even a young person, this is one of many jobs in my life. It's just hard these days, I think. One day I will get new doll clothes. I hope all of you can get lots of nice things for your dolls -- or maybe even your first doll -- this year.

Does Amiami have them? It's where I usually find Azone stuff, but it's also been a few years so someone else probably knows better than I do on that front.
