nta but if you want a modlite the PLHV2 is their balanced offering. You can see it comapred to an M600 here
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gJD44ZOKyLM [Embed]
You can also get a PLHV2 head with an arisaka 600 body which is slim and whatever tailcap + pressure pad you want (if you even want one) from the arisaka website's light builder section.
https://arisakadefense.com/18650-series-lightkit/
The Rein 2.0 also has pretty similar performance to the PLHV2 but it's a warmer color tone.
You also get an all in one package.
The only caveat is you are stuck with using Rein's ecosystem which is pretty bare.
The Rein's use a surefire mounting footprint though so you can use whatever mount you want. as long as it's a surefire footprint which is pretty much industry standard anyway.

Mission drives the gear
Rather than seeking minimalism, seek pieces of gear that can be effectively used in multiple roles with the minimal amount of friction in either.
Example:
A two piece belt is an extremely low friction way to have a mag or two and a handgun but its only really useful for DA shit. Cant really do low vis well, not the ticket for a big static defense in most cases and doesnt scale to a full assault loadout. By contrast if you want to flex gear into that role with the minimum shit on hand, having a good belt mount for your pistol and a couple belt mounted handgun pouches while spending the rest of that value elsewhere might just be a more efficient spend.
>DOES THIS MEAN TWO PIECE BELTS ARE BTF-
No its more nuanced than that. Your mission set and operational reach are downstream from several things. Compromising your CCW gun for VBSS capabilities as a single dude living in ohio probably not the play. In an ideal perfect world you can have a two piece gunbelt fully setup AND a bonus QLS socket with a couple fastmags for belt mounting.

Start by putting yourself through a capability and reach analysis then put your existing gear through a flexibility analysis. Then and only then start buying/selling shit.

I have an RC2 and a rotex-x compact (gen1.5 one or some shit) that I like a lot, but the Print-x compact isn't really in stock that often, and the mini seems to have 'decent' flash reduction and taking the edge off 556. something like a cheap ass PRT sounds like it would kind of be nice and it seems to fit the bill. I'm still pretty disappointed the original BAD ambi safety is discontinued. It was my favorite by far and the lever retention method on the newer version is worse imo.

I think the FCD one is probably my favorite now, but I do wish there were a few more lever options. Namely something like the old 'crank' style BAD.

Gonna try an offset 50 degree FCD on my next lower.

because for all functional purposes, those are great truck guns that will do 75% of what your $5k+ gucci builds will do. Of course I want an RMR on top of that acog, of course there could be nicer shit hanging off the other one, but if you like the carry handle aesthetic, the aimpoint on carry handle is close enough to the unity mount shit people are doing. They are doing it for NVGs, but the rifles are pretty similar though they are meant for different things.

I think it comes down to: if you aren't using night vision, and if you aren't larping as an operator, and if you aren't doing serious shooting competitions, just make a gun that you like. Carry handles are a retro aesthetic. Some people just like that stuff. Also, a lot of people already have a min/maxed gun so they don't need to keep building the same thing over and over again.

I just think it's funny that the super 1337 weekend operator crowd is still using lasers and IR illuminators for NVGs when everyone with NVGs can now see them like a christmas tree. all of that shit, and flashlights, have all fallen off the rifles in modern combat. If you want to LARP invasion of Iraq/Afghanistan where they have nothing and you can use that shit with impunity, go for it, but don't pretend that all the glowing shit on your rifle is still even remotely useful, in fact, it's a death sentence in modern combat.

That’s because they can’t trust grunts not to do retarded shit and get their whole position erased by arty, dogshit (battery) logistics in shitholes where modern wars are taking place, ect. Light caps, light and laser discipline are are a thing. If I’m gonna zap you under nods I’m not walking around with my laser on, I’m gonna turn it on right before I shoot you. I think for civilians though, lams are kinda dumb because in cqc you can point shoot and use a kiji/illum, for further distances a tws/clipon is better

Nobody has enough nods in enough number to make massive infantry pushes with nods. Nobody has MFALs because of this, not because ah bro the opfor gonna get me !
They are using nods to move log to trench positions at night, conduct probes/obstacle breaches and lead blind relief forces to positions.

When static they are using nods and thermals in a static security against probes and to keep heads down by sniping at other trench positions. Although recently you have been seeing more small arms being used in an all arms air defense against baba yaga and similar large night operated drop drones.

passive aiming starts getting hard when you can't even identify your target with nods so while proliferation of NVDs and light discipline is a thing you can still only ever bee as good as your detection capability which means you have to be pretty close to use passive aim, fwiw.

I like the idea behind having a mk18 or 11.5 gun + plate carrier, medical aid, and mags nearby in case of something serious but at the same time I think the risk getting it all stolen far exceeds the likelihood of needing to use it. If you can make a 50 yard pistol hit you will probably be fine.

not home otherwise I'd post some of my carry handle collection. I have more carry handle ARs than not and I do it mostly for cloning old Colt production ARs that I think look super clean. I think the main charm of CH ARs is that they do everything that an AK does, in so far that it's got everything it needs on it permanently attached all the time but much lighter and with better controls and trigger. The "always ready 2 go" feeling along with them just simply working makes them popular I think.

As an aside I think alot of AR retro cloning is the modern analogue to milsurp collecting for people who missed out on 70 dollar mosins and 80 dollar SKSes and super cheap Russian ammo. Buying something like an H&R and maybe even getting some surplus furniture on it is the closest you can get to that feeling today but also actually being able to shoot your guns

mostly for sentry duty as A2 said. The reason for this though isn't because there isn't enough nods to go around for a big le heckin infantry push at nighterino! It's because the Russians have nods as well. I've seen interviews from both sides where the gist of what they are saying is "ya we have nods and that's cool and all but it's not super useful because the other side has them as well and you just get shot at if you are doing anything at night." Besides, for most soldiers it's more beneficial to sleep at night anyways. Nods users eternally mad over the guy who just goes to bed and refuses to play ball with their larping nonsense

If I have to use my gun at all I don’t want to use it at night.
Shooting with nods sucks unless the other guys don’t have them.
Your peripheral vision is basically non existent. You have basically no ability to discern color contrast beyond shades because everything is just varying shades of blue or green depending on what kind of tube(s) you have.
You can only shoot what you can see and you can’t see much because the detection capability is pretty poor.
Fixing malfunctions, anything that requires fine motor skills sucks to do at night, coordinating with other people in a physical sense sucks to do at night, navigation sucks to do at night.

>I get what you're saying but you're being needlessly hyperbolic. Anyone that takes this stuff seriously acknowledges all of that, which is why passive aiming capability has become such a discussion point on these setups, and why all those devices you mention are on momentary switches. It's all accounted for.
I don't mean to be needlessly hyperbolic. Allow me to rephrase, NVGs with a thermal layover e.g. ecoti + pvs14 are still the absolute best idea when it comes to a helmet mounted option. Night vision and thermal optics/clip ons are now what should be on a rifle (unless using your high mounted aimpoint with your NVGs, there are different options here) and the (even momentary) illuminators and lasers are an ever growing liability in the modern world where night vision is so widespread. I am all for getting as much light and information as possible from the environment around me, but zero emission is the future of a realistic combat setup. The newest generation of thermals offer superb imaging. Coupling this with a night vision monocular/goggle will give you the capability to see your environment a bit better as well as highlight anyone silly enough to be outputting IR radiation. Pure thermal most likely isn't going to be the best option because glass is still a thing.

tl;dr: NV and thermal combination is best, emitting any light is bad

this stuff only applies if you are trying to sit around and min/max a relevant combat setup, average joe should still have a flashlight, high speed harry can still have his passive aiming, we're civilians and none of this shit really matters, I only really feel like the people who come on this site and talk about "best possible whatever" while running stuff that is getting people killed IRL are a bit silly and the entire argument that "well if I only use it for a second it's okay" is cope.

This is a very academic take that doesnt hold up to reality. Lasers are used for far more than just aiming and throwing illum to increase clarity. All sorts of signaling, suppression, designating and handoffs are executed via active means. In a team environment they are absolutely killer. Capabilities like tractor beam are also going to continue to proliferate because they fucking rock. Fighting at night is hard and it has nothing to do with the units on your head.

>Fusion
Fused systems suffer from typical thermal issues that make them difficult to use in field conditions, especially in challenging terrain. Until thermals are high enough resolution for computer vision to filter clutter you are going to slow image processing and image usability significantly.

Designating doesnt always mean aircraft or HLZ
Here is a toe dip level:
Try to describe a window on a multistory down a street to someone where you saw a thermal contact, muzzle flash or similar shady asshole. Like yeah you can grid the windows and call it out but fuck that under time and trying to resolve it enough for both of you to count windows. Shoot a laser at the window
>BUT WHAT IF THE GUY HAS NODS
and he sees a laser paint his window? You've suppressed him while spending zero rounds. Idk about you but im not stepping into a running IR laser to shoot myshot . Frees element to maneuver, set a weapons system up on that bearing or disengage fully and displace.
Behold proper laser usage in a team env

By contrast ive been running a beltfed under nods, totally fucking people up from cpl hundred meters away in a treeline and the one bright guy on the other side starts firing his illuminator up trying to "search" a treeline for me and the AG like its some sort of flashlight looking for a target on a backstop. Of course that guy gets fed immediately because he was using his laser like a goofball. Had he simply put a bit more thought into watching for flashes and then firing his illum directly at the source of those flashes, ripping off a couple rounds and then displacing he might have had a chance.

Anything handheld is going to suffer on a clipon role. Same is true about the reverse. RH25, UTMx, skeet, etc make great handhelds with very limited clipon capabilities. To be handheld means a display that is large enough with a rough enough resolution to hold to your eye and get a workable image. To be a good clipon means a display that is small with very dense resolution to allow you to work the zoom on it.

I will say having a multirole handheld with SOME clipon capability outweighs only having a clipon tbqh. Having to do all your scans through a rifle mounted clipon gets old about rep #20 night #3. If you can save a bit more money the RH25 V2 should help with the clipon issue by having a really high res display. If you are hard stopping at that 3-4k mark then a used UTMx/Skeet might fall in there, otherwise its probably going to be RH25v1 Abusive menu edition.

No but I've always thought green phosphor was comfy and I do think there's something to your eye being able to pick out contrast differences. DTNVS-MG seems like a really nice housing, and I wouldn't mind having one with a cheap set of of tubes as a spare and for doing dumb shit.

Photonis tubes unironically seem fine desu.

Best menus ever, skeet and UTM, very similar menus basically identical. Calibration is manual vs automatic on the RH25 but I prefer manual after using a Skeet IR-L, UTMx, and RH25.

Are you in FL? Coulda sworn I've seen this gun before...
>>
>>62787914
Doesn’t the tractor beam make it easy to kill the drone, easy to know what the sf team is doing, where they are gonna do the hit, ect? Do they throw up a bunch of drones to make it less obvious what they are doing. It seems like that would have more downsides than just running a thermal camera drone, but I guess that has its issues too (convo you had with that one anon, top of hill soft point long range rifle killed by drone)

I've been doing it for years dude. Arguing on the internet is fun and sometimes I learn stuff and I have never learned anything by agreeing with someone else. Shit, today I learned about special night vision laser applications that I wasn't aware of because I am a never-served guy who mostly shoots alone and I saw them as nothing but a liability. So I argued and learned something. Am I going to go buy a laser/illuminator for my gun? Fuck no. But now I can understand at least one aspect where the technology is still relevant.

I find the auto calibration a bit distracting, and the RH25 seemed to jump a bit when it calibrated, would hate for that to happen when I’m about to take a shot or something. With the manual calibration you can do it when unit turns on, then periodically when time permits after it’s warmed up. I am certainly not an expert though but have just owned a few units and have opinions based on that. It’s tough to decide at the moment, RH25 certainly has the support and it does come in such a small size that can’t be overlooked. I’m a UTMx guy now but my dream would be something like a skeet ir x to compliment it for handheld use
