So what does? It's either that or 338 ARC. You expecting some new exciting caliber that'll solve some non-existant problem you haven't heard of?

New caliber won't fill the void. In fact, it'll barely feel different at all.

Diving into rail rigidity and more specifically, barrel nut thickness. This came up on a P&S podcast about precision shooting and seems like the hidden variable affecting accuracy after barrel/bullet/optic. Where do various rails (and their respective barrel nuts) fall on this scale? Specifically wondering if something like the BCM KMR/MCMR Alpha rails provide adequate barrel rigidity even if the rails themselves can bend a little. Also what are the best, most robust barrel nuts in use today??

It was a red dot course so generally 100-200 yards. For close range stuff we pulled the targets at least 40-50y from the backstop - judging by the picture like halfway between the camera and the crowd (can't tell exactly how close they were).

Combine that with us being downrange/on the other side of the long distance range's backstop. Would occasionally hear rounds pass overhead...I thought it was neat.

After the first day of class we ate at BWW and saw a chevy impala pull up/park and go from smoking to fully engulfed by flames in about a minute. Fire dept came and watched with us, didn't do a damn thing to put it out but there were no other cars around. Was more entertaining than anything they had on the TVs

Open emitter, I'm guessing less durable than a T2. For me the familiarity is what's most appealing, but that may not be worth the trade off of it being heavier and bulkier. I've only used the RMR on a pistol so having it on a rifle isn't computing for me just yet.

Just stand in front of a wall with a light switch/something to aim at on it and present the dot 100 times from low ready
>>
>>62867058
It's only like 0.2" higher than an RMR.
>>62867110
The appeal is its enclosed, has a much easier control to adjust brightness on the fly, and doesn't have the notch filter that an RMR does which limits light transmission under NV.

It is definitely bulky and a little weird looking.

556 and 545 AK i see very rarely. Those I would consider. Most of them are either 7.62x39(ammo is hard to come by these days) or 308(ammo is expensive).

I guess I will keep looking if anything else comes up or start considering hk(too yuropoor). ;|

Larp and have fun. Ive got an AR with an acog and a scar 17 with an aimpoint/peq 2. I feel like as far as "best tools" ive got more boxes checked then not.
I could probably do a bit to either of them to modernize but im not sure a new laser or different flashlight would make all that much of a difference in practice.
Suppressors would be cool but that would be getting a bit long on my ar and ive read the scar is a bitch to dial in.
Really just looking for something different that i can say still checks a box im missing.

It sounds like you have a 20" AR and a scar 17, which is great but definitely doesn't check the CQB box. Idk, if I were you I would buy an 11.5" AR and suppress it with a K can. Any situation inside 100 yards and you'll be very glad you have it. I can't imagine not having a short suppressed AR, it was the first thing I went for when I got into guns.
>>
>>62867424
Youve pretty much nailed it.
I guess i just dont get that excited about ARs. I know theyre the most popular for a reason but i carried one for 10 years, it was the first "modern" rifle i bought, and ive got one set up for highpower. I know theyre great and its probably a better solution than anything else but i cant see myself getting excited about having a 3rd ar in my safe or at the range.

If you put the fattest highest backpressure 308 can on and refuse to change the gas port you will crack your carrier. If you can figure out how to mount your own muzzle device you are probably good enough to swap gas jets and run the thing suppressed forever.

This build is really controversial for me. On one hand, it's fairly aesthetic and an entirely viable practical rifle.

On the other, it's so compromised and scuffed in so many ways. The carbine gas, delta ring quad, that awful grip angle, the ds tailcapoon the right side with no remote, oof. It's like it was specifically engineered to be as mid as possible. The 2009 version of a newbies BCM build.
>>
>>62867628
>Yeah but aren’t the HK barrels good and long lasting despite that anyway?
When theyre chrome lined, yeah. You cant beat copper fouling and corrosion with a super special steel mix, you still need chrome lining. HK has some of the best barrels but they cant beat physics.

The buffer is doing a deadblow to reduce bolt bounce. Boltbounce in a semi gun that isnt some bench autism accuracy platform is more annoying than anything. You dont have a tungsten full tungsten flow thats able to fill like the tungsten buffers from spikes/kawvalley/etc. You have reduced the deadblow effect of a free weight buffer while increasing its mass.

In all likelihood this is inferior to the previous state of your buffer.

Call me crazy but I think this isn't true. I understand the logic but the barrel is already in a fixed position so how does it affect bolt bounce? If a wall is an order of magnitude heavier than combined bolt and buffer weight, wouldn't any excess energy that might cause bolt bounce be reduced from the buffer, not the immovable wall? Even in simulations, everything deflects a bit, so I don't really get what you're saying

I don't understand what makes them any better than the ar-15. Every other ar-18 design is ridiculed as a meme but the SCAR is considered okay. Seems like every force that adopts the SCAR keeps the 17 because in .308 it's awesome and light, but no one ever keeps the 16, not even special forces guys with special budgets for their special missions. I am guessing it's an emotional thing

Way, way, way more. It's my beater up. It's the first upper I tried with my machine gun lower with a 60 round mag and a stubby buffer. You're telling me your entire hypothesis was just based off your personal experience with a single upper and lower?

>Do you have a dumb hand or something?
Probably. I only use it as an indexing point or handstop and any farther forward would make it awkward to hit the switches for light/lam which aren't on there yet. I might take it off entirely, but I've used them that way in matches to push up against barriers without interfering with the mag.

Get a stainless barrel you won't even get it hot enough to be an issue.

Guys couple quick questions
Got a budget of 2k gonna build a rifle
Was thinking about something less than 16in, like a dd mk18 upper, or something in 14.5. What brands should I be looking at or should i stick to 16?
Also this will be the first AR that I prob wont be buying completed, I've heard that you can skimp on lowers but that sounds dumb.
What upper lower combos should i be on the look out for?
>>
>>62868964
Geissele Black Friday sale
>>
>>62868964
Can't go wrong with either geissele or dd for an upper. Centurion man is good too, same with Larue. Just get an aero lower if you don't wanna build a lower, but building a complete rifle is so much fun. Can all be done in one evening too.

just picked up my first decent quality AR. been rocking a DB I bought when I turned 18 because it was the only AR with a quad rail they had. didn't even look at the lower marks when I paid for it but was pleasantly surprised to see M4 CARBINE instead of just CARBINE with a cr serial. I saw the brass deflector was mint as fuck and for $800 I just snagged it.

I run a T2 on top of my elcan.
Pros are that a T2 is just so much easier to live with than anything else.
Whenever you need to adjust the bightness you just turn a dial. Way easier to do at night and/or with gloves on.
It also just works.
There's a lot of enclosed emitters on the market and it seems like the T2 is the only one that doesn't have issues.
If you are doing this for a LARPer SHTF type gun then T2 is easy to justify and rationalize because it's rugged, reliable, easy to operate, and while it's more expensive that cost will average out over the lifetime of ownership.
If you're just fucking around with something for the range and all you want is a dot so you can have a dot then I'm sure there's more economical options out there where the nuances also don't matter as much

>>62866564
larue, given how it supports and in turn is supported by the handguard mounting system and interfaces with the upper to create something greater than the sum of its parts
>>
>>62868964
Sounds dumb cuz you don't know shit put all your 3 quarters of the money on the upper and optic. Get a whatever lower with a tubbs flatwire spring h2 buffer and a gman or larue trigger the end.
