what would you say is in store for our favorite infantry portable indirect-fire weapon?is it an obsolete concept doomed to be replaced by something shiny and new?or will it still be a staple of future conflicts?
>>62876440I think it's beginning to be augmented by short range drones, but will hang on forever as a cheap low-tech weapon even in advanced armies. Instant artillery support at the company level = win.
would you kill girls if they sent girls to fight you?
>>62876521Nah. I'd capture them
>>62876440Muzzleloading is a challenge to automate for UGV
>>62876440probably all kinds of special ammos that will never get issued and drone spotting
>>62876486Why not put drones in mortars for additional range? You could have a guy sitting nearby with one of those headsets on directing the rounds on target.
>>62876440It will eventually be replaced by short range drones in the very long term. In the mid term mortars aren't going anywhere. They just werk.>>62876865It's a worst of both worlds situation. You don't add anything meaningful by adding a complicated specialized launch process. U know the Switchblade 300? It originally began as a gun launched munition in the FCS program. It only succeeded after they ditched the idea of using a cannon in favor of a disposable fiberglass tube to launch.
>>62876440The future of mortars has been here for a while https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bfF52zBzr6kAs for muzzle loaded legacy systems, mounting them on x vehicle seems to be a trend.
>>62876521depends are they white and do they support a neo communist regime
>>62876440>>62876486artillery is basically long-range mortars
>>62876440>not cost effective to counter battery, like full blown howitzers>more portable>drone spotting increases their efficiency wildly at the tactical levelSmall optionally manned ammo carriers that double as anti-air for Drones and Mortar Carriers. If there's a trenchline that needs to be sealed, that's the tool to do it while your boys do hood rat shit.
>>62876865Mortar-launched drones (or ‘loitering munitions’) are already in development. Hell, they’re even doing them in 40mm.
>>62876898Drones can't deploy a smokescreen or saturate an area the same way mortars can.
>>62876440Maybe the mordor firing tubey aimy thang gets all servo and wire controlled so you can keep shooting while being fired upon since you are not there.
>>62879015>Drones can't deploy a smokescreenI haven't seen videos of that being done yet, but there's no technical reason why they couldn't. Drones could drop smoke devices the same way they drop grenades, or even emit the smoke directly.
>>62876440Unless counter-battery systems get huge improvement, we will see them still for a long time.
>>62876440put them on a big roomba
>>62876440Didn't you ask this word for word, paired with the same image several weeks ago?
>>62876440Going off that 81mm mortar round she's holding that doll is like 8 feet tall. God damn
>>62883479Looks like a stubby 60mm shell to a m224.
>>62884614OP is a 2B14 82mm mortar, looks like the artist used pic related as reference when drawing and didn't know which round it fires. Unfortunately quite common with no gun artists, see >>62884083.
Foot and light vehicle based mortars are drone fodder. Needs an IFV with a modicum of armor and APS to be survivable, especially at the close range it's to be used.>>62878385>>62879921Mortars are definitely worth counter-battering and easy to do so too.
