They'll be making a million of those eventually, but they've gotten a lot better at keeping plates on the truck, so the "surp" situation for those will probably be like finding 28595s. Easy to find if you look, hard to get a good price.

Im trying to decide if I want to buy new avs platebags or just buy an spc. I’ve calculated weights for most everything I carry, and it comes out to 326 oz, or about 20.4 pounds. this doesn’t include pouches, but it includes armor, mags, ordinance, tools, water, and meds. It isn’t the heaviest load, is the avs really going to carry, say 25 pounds or less of gear better than the spc to justify the 2 pound increase in vest weight and the heat trap of the harness?
>>
>>65420996
There is the possibility you will eventually have to carry a heavier load. Being able to scale up is probably better than minmax around a 20lb loadout.
>>
>>65421069
Peter north loads require Crye AVS+
>>
>>65420996
20.4lb is light with armor, what plates are in play here?
>>
>>65421523
everything is III+ with a m855 rating. front and back is 5.2 and sides are 1.4 pounds each.

what’s really light is my mags (3) and water (500ml). Im never going to carry more than 2 flash bags, and I carry most of my 40mm ordinance off body because it’s all less lethal anyways so id rather keep it in a bag to ditch if things go to guns.
>>
>>65421576
>front and back is 5.2
5.2lb each, I hope, or you're an 8x10 kinda guy. Otherwise sounds good. You're positive you can get by with 500mL water? That's low.
>>
>>65421598
I’m not a soldier (anymore) or a prepared citizen. I dont even drink my kit water anymore, it’s really there for an emergency.
>>
>>65421576
How are you getting an M855 rating at 2.6 pounds per plate? SAPI XS? Sheeeit, even the genuine SAPI XS is 2.8 pounds per plate, and it's ICW.
Are you sure you haven't been hoodwinked?
>>
>>65421713
I think he means 5.2lb per. Even the boron carbide $3k a set Hesco 3811 from 2023 is 3lb per 10x12. 2.6lb is either cheat ringed / nominally sized / corner cut to shit, or an absolutely state of the art plate using a B6O, PCD, or AlMgB14 face. Diamond Age had an experimental 2.2lb M855 + M80 rated plate using polycrystalline diamond, but it was a motherfuckeringly expensive, impossible to mass produce model.
>>
>>65421598
>>65421713
gang I mistyped and forgot “each” they’re sapi large hoplite/ltc 23707s, 5.2 each. add in the 6x6 sides we’re at 13 pounds of armor. i’m also not considering the weight of my front panel or my pouches or anything on my beltline, just a rough of what I am carrying on my vest to assess if I’m wearing too much vest for the amount of protection and load im carrying
>>
>>65421764
Lol, all good.
>hoplite/ltc 23707s
These are fine plates, but you're the second guy in the past month that's gotten these instead of 3810s / 3612s which basically mog it in every way.
SAPI L 3810s would have saved you a pound, which allows you to put a pound towards something else like more water. 500mL will go quick if you're in the field a while.

As for the vest, if it works, it works.
>>
>>65421777
no no, same guy.

“if it works it works” isn’t really the answer I was looking for so allow me to rephrase.

I have a crye avs. my harness is fine but my plate bags are ripping. Ive already done repairs once, They need replacement. I could spend $409 plus shipping right now for plate bags, but considering I now carry 1/3rd the mags, 1/6th the water, and some amount less of armor weight, should I instead spend my plate bag money on a new, more minimalist plate carrier such as the crye spc which will allow me to easily migrate all my crye pouches?
>>
Anyone paying attention to this thread? Apparently SOCOM's M855A1+ is shorter, uses a tungsten core to maintain same mass, and has a muzzle velocity of 3,799ft/s out of a 20" or so.
>>65421538
We're in early revision ESAPI-busting territory here, unless the tungsten core is a blended metal PRL type for max fragmentation. I don't know how exactly they plan on issuing tungsten core as standard if this is true.

>it's retarded!
Based Neetmaster say it's retarded refuse to elaborate further-ism.
Anyway, now to play critic, the external ballistics are gonna be ass with a round like that, especially since they're gunning for 600 meter effective range out of a shortie. Next, SOCOM can't issue tungsten core standard. If they could then M995 / M993 wouldn't be so rare. Lastly, there is no indication M855A1+ is tungsten core from anywhere else... at all. It's supposed to just be pissing hot M855A1.

Now let's talk about M995+, that'll be a different, 4000ft/s story.
>>
>>65421875
See >>65421843
The M855A1 is about 1" long. That bullet would be something like 0.6", which is stupidly short.
The whole thing would have to be solid tungsten for it to be 62 grains, but it's obviously not. If it's built anything like M855A1, even with the tungsten penetrator, it would be in the 30-40 grain range.
The magic velocity gain is also dumb as shit. OG M855A1 was loaded extremely hot and they had to dial it back.
The whole thing is low-IQ.

The groin protector alone is nearly as expensive as a Jinwudun skirt that provides 360 degree femoral IIIA, which is critical for frag environments and translates well to urban situations involving ladders with switches, provided stuff like 50gr Liberty isn't involved, or rifle threats... or a cheap crossbow from Cabela's.
DSTU-2 protection is more stiff than IIIA, sure, but the odds of running into steel core 7.62x25 tok are a little long here in the States. If it were a serious problem, "IIIB" soft armor would still be going around.

>and you don't need to spend a lot to get ceramic that stops bullets
The problem is that if you can blow $665 on a bare low cut Highcum Stroker helmet that's functionally the same as a $70 Ceradyne BA3A from Botach, you shouldn't be rolling sketchy RMAs or 15 year old no-drop Highcom or LTC designs like 4SAS7s or 26149s. Now if you're buying second hand, that's different. $400 gets you a lot more mileage since used non-SOF plates fundamentally don't hold value.
$500 on the second hand market gets you a pair of Protech 2230s that stop M2AP at Mach 3.12 and a BA3A. $1065 buying new gets you a pair of Highcoms you can't drop and aren't even true 10x12, and a Highcom helmet which struggles to distinguish itself from the BA3A.

>I have difficulty understanding the difference between these all nominally 3a helmets
That means you're paying attention, because you know IIIA for helmets doesn't officially exist and anything past II is 100% made the fuck up because the helmet standard, NIJ 0106.01, hasn't been updated since 1981. They've been trying to implement NIJ 0106.02, with a compliant product list, just like body armor, a modern BFD measurement protocol, and levels up to IV / RF3 since the early 00s. Still ongoing.
>how are the safariland ulws/ceradyne n49s, protection wise?
You have to compare the given .357 SIG, 9x19mm, and .44 Magnum velocities and also BFD numbers if they give them. The last one is a big thing. Some helmets stop .44 mag with 40mm BFD, others do it in 20mm, others like my steel NP550 stop 12 gauge 3" magnum slug with less than 20mm but weigh an extra pound versus comparable PE IIIA. A lot of companies do not give that data, so you're coasting a lot on company reputation and third party data. Frustrating, I know.
>>

71 KB PNG
>>65422420
I also like that they use NIJ 0108.01, aka the shield / vehicle armor / extremity armor standard, aka the standard where BFD doesn't matter, for all their helmets. Good going, 3M.
https://multimedia.3m.com/mws/media/1667240O/3m-ultra-light-weight-ulw-ballistic-bump-helmet-n49.pdf

If you want to guarantee helmets held to an actual consistent standard, you have to roll milspec like ACH or ECH, or go with VPAM models.

How is it 2XL+ and "big and tall" when it's made for 10x12" plates though? Weird.
>>
>>65423422
because the banshee is notorious for having poorly designed shoulder straps. The large padded portions on the front and rear make it impossible for a normal person to properly size the carrier and have plates ride at the correct height. So they took that design flaw and slapped a “big and tall” label on it to make it seem like its a feature. Scummy and deceptive

Run four of those and attach to the Jinwudun skirt with TacScorp velcro adapters, you have nearly 360 degree femoral coverage up to any level you choose, although if you want to protect your Ramses against .50 cal you'll need 1.4+" thick plates which won't fit and will require DIY.

Good testing data from DocGKR. The PPI 2518s from >>65423874 put on a solid show. See below:

Damn not bad. 6.5 pounds ICW, around 7.5 pounds with a backer, totally mogs anything RMA makes, and it's a 20-year-old model.

the jinwundun skirt looks like it only provides adequate protection if the wearer is standing. Looks like the coverage shifts and fails to provide proper coverage if the user is kneeling or seated in a vehicle.

Last time RMA had a plate rated for three M2AP, it was the cheat ringed 1189.

Don't sleep on that PPI 10008 "ESAPI Surrogate" either. 5.42lb SAPI M, 6.5lb SAPI L. Stopped 3x M2AP and 3x 5.56 SSA tungsten AP on the same plate. Doc called it boron carbide, but if it does tungsten 5.56 that well it's more likely SiC-B4C hybrid tile. Basically like a REV. G but half a decade early. Also REV. Gs cap out at M995, which this AP outperforms, and aren't supposed to do 3x M2AP and THEN 3x 5.56 AP. Very good, especially for 2009.
$1k a plate with LE pricing in 2009. Add 15% and then adjust for inflation and you're at $3.6k a set for SAPI L, probably 3.2k for SAPI M, so you're past Hesco 4800 / Adept Emperor here. More like Hesco SC3812 / Ceradyne MH3 CQB / Cercom CER-EMH territory.

Also Verrett's has Hesco 4800s on sale for $2,160 a set.

Ceramic frag is an issue, surprisingly enough. From DocGKR:
>With these ceramic plate types, the amount of spall is a significant concern—during testing of the 2518 plates, a can of spray adhesive sitting 4 feet to the side of the plates was unexpectedly punctured by spall fragments and burst. In addition, with plates that depend primarily on ceramic elements to stop projectiles, shot spacing can be critical. Because of the generosity of PPI, we had enough plates to experiment with this parameter. These ceramic plate types are able to successfully stop projectiles when a 3” spacing between shots is maintained, however, when shot spacing was decreased to 2” or less, the additional shots fully perforated both the plates and underlying IIIa soft armor.
The LTC 27400 also had the same issues. You don't see this with modern plates as much because of better adhesive, covers, and crack arrestors, but yes ceramics can "spall" as Doc described.
>>65424504
One caveat is that the 2518 is a do not drop. It coexisted with the original Highcom 4SAS4 back in 2008.

Anons, is the ECH better than the ACH?
Also, where is a good place to buy?
>>
>>65424986
The ECH is far more robust than an ACH versus more energetic, larger fragmentation and has limited capability against basic rifle threats, like 7.62x39 lead or mild steel core, while the ACH does not. It however is not a "full" rifle rated helmet and isn't good for 7.62x51mm M80 unless velocity is low. There are other helmets for that, but they're usually $$$ except for a sketchy 6lb Jinwudun.
A Gen II ACH is however much lighter.
>Also, where is a good place to buy?
Ebay, tacswap, gunbroker, local facebook / craigslist listings. Get used to doing a rotation because good deals go quick.

tl;dr ECH is better for high threat situations, ACH is better if you're more facing basic pistol threats and could use the weight savings.

Alright, I didn't get the 2240 yet but I did find an improved model called the Protech 2230-1. Wasn't aware this is a thing.
The regular Protech 2230 from >>65422409 is 7.5lb, using a thick aramid backer behind a ceramic face, with an UNEQUAL trauma pad. It's 1.2" thick and vastly exceeds Level IV requirements because it stops M2AP over 3,510ft/s and the requirement is 2,910ft/s. It also meets Level III's 6x 7.62 M80 req.
The newer Protech 2230-1 switches to a polyethylene-fiberglass hybrid backer and the weight is now 6.8lb for a 10x12. Since this is an improved 2230, it frankly demolishes the 6.4lb Hesco 4601, which has far less headroom above NIJ velocity, and rivals the Adept Colossus which isn't a true 10x12 and would be 7.1lb if it were.

This in turn means the actual 2240 from 2024 must be REALLY special.

>>65425942
has anyone ever tested any Jinwudun helmets?
>>
>>65426067
There are test reports buried on their site, but the BFD numbers are unimpressive. Up to 32mm against 9x19mm for a IIIA helmet, so .44 is gonna be ugly. Not very inspiring for the Level III, but 5.8lb does check out at least, weight-wise.
VPAM contends backface signature for helmets should be no higher than 25mm, while also accounting for backface velocity and deformation width, not just depth.

The fundamental problem is that Jinwudun uses cheap shitty materials because they are a B-grade company. Their plates are well below other Chinese guys like Militech, Gilliam, and others in terms of specs, weight, and price.
>>
>>65426088
>but the BFD numbers are unimpressive
kinda what I expected. thanks for giving me the rundown.
>>
>>65426034
Nice find. Is it discontinued like the 2230?
>polyethylene-fiberglass hybrid backer
Does this lower the M2AP v50 or is it the same?
>>
>>65426107
Not a problem. Jinwudun's role is basically to offer weird niche shit and plates at a price point below Militech. Unless you need a skirt or select kinds of helmets, shields, etc Militech is superior chinesium. With plates and basic helms it's no contest.
>>65426140
>Nice find. Is it discontinued like the 2230?
Yes, I have confirmation from Safariland the 2230 and 2240 are both discontinued, so the 2230-1 is since it's a transitional model, just like how the 2220-1 was basically a weaker crappier 2230, but still a major improvement on the old 2220.
>Does this lower the M2AP v50 or is it the same?
Should be at least the same. Polyethylene is less velocity sensitive than aramid, which is good, and fiberglass is heavier than either but generally has low BFD. Using a combination of the two materials strategically can net a good result. Full PE is however better if you can control the BFD. PE has had major improvements since 2020.

This means the 2240 is probably full PE backer, using the very latest improved grades from Dyneema or Honeywell since it was just discontinued in 2024, and likely around 6.3-6.4lb which for an honest 10x12 is VERY attractive.
>>
>>65424728

What I’m saying is, they are taking a shitty design and putting a spin on it to sell said shitty design as a feature.
>>
what is the best budget RF3 ICW plate
>>
>>65426304
The Paraclete formerly PPI 2518s from Botach can't be beat for $280 a pair, but are copsurp and rather old. Otherwise for ICW you're looking at old school LTCs like the 26149 from Bulletproofme. All of those are 0101.04 models and are down on drop protection and are only good for M2AP up to 2,880ft/s and not 2,910ft/s.

Are you adamant on ICW?
>>65426291
That "spin" is just explaining the niche a shitty design has. Everything's got a niche. Steel plates are similarly shit if not moreso, but there's no denying that they have two niches versus ceramics. They stop hits much closer together and are immune to drops. Similarly, this carrier controls ceramic spall.
>>
>>65426373
yes, might as well be ICW since I’m building out a soft armor vest as my base. What about gillaims sale items
>>
>>65426378
The GARMS 3 is another option. It's half a pound lighter than the Paraclete 2518 and $300 a set, 6lb / 0.7" per. Same problem with no drop protection.
https://www.gilliamarms.com/products/garms-3-srt-rf3?

The problem with ICW plates is that you need to meet or exceed the soft armor the plate was tested with. Gilliam tested the GARMS 3 with his soft armor, which is current 0101.07 spec. You have to meet or exceed that with your soft armor. That's non-negotiable. Run shitty soft and the plate may fail you. Dead in the skreets.
Paraclete's 2518 works with any certified 0101.04 or 0101.06 panel, and 0101.04's soft armor requirements are MUCH easier, given no conditioning protocol, so you have more leeway in case you already bought soft. On the other hand, the 2518s are old and you're gambling on condition. They do however meet both III and IV and have solid multi-hit accordingly. You don't know if they're good to go though, 100%, unless you xray.
>>
>>65426378
Also, to give you a verdict and some other options, basically it goes like this:
>LTC 26149 series: old model, but new production. Meets III and IV to 0101.04.
>PPI / Paraclete 2518: Old model, old production. Meets III and IV to 0101.04 plus 3x M2AP same plate instead of just one (3" spacing or more) along with some serious tungsten 70gr SSA 5.56 AP. Strongest available ICW option, at the moment, except for XSAPIs.
>GARMS 3: One M2AP to 0101.06.
>Used ESAPIs: VERY variable condition, but best weight-protection ratio of the above ICW options. REV. G nearly rivals the 2518 on rating but is a pound lighter and change. REV. As and other older versions are closer to the GARMS 3 on rating, but all milspec ESAPIs meet conditioning / durability requirements so they CAN take a drop.

If you just need plug and play and have good enough soft armor, GARMS 3. If you're willing to gamble, 2518s. If you're willing to wait, ESAPIs and get a good pair of Gs or later. An ideal option would be REV. C XSAPIs which match the GARMS 3 on weight but have vastly superior 3x 7.62x51mm M993 protection, but those are scarce. REV. B / A are equal to the 2518 on weight and still do M993, which will pierce the 2518 all day even at range, but XSAPIs for sale nowadays lately are all roached. Pair on Tacswap looks like a corpse.

Certainly one of the easiest rifle helms to find. On paper the tip top is possibly the Adept Bastion, but that's harder to find than the Diamond Age N1, which is harder to find than Jimmy Hoffa. 7.62x39 MSC protection won't help you much CONUS if shit gets hot on the block. M855A1 + M80 will. Gotta keep in mind OCONUS is not the same rogue's gallery as CONUS, threat wise. Thus is why stuff like the LTC 28595 is awesome over there but awkward over here.
Ceradyne had helms up to 7.62x51 AP but they're straight up unobtanium and B4C + PE is always gonna be heavier.

The point is that some people do buy helmets expecting to stop rifle rounds, or something better than basic 9mm at that velocity. Really what the issue is, is that the Ops Core >>65427401 is memeing on is like trying to justify level IIA soft armor. Not applicable to CONUS these days and the statistics support that. NIJ flat out got rid of IIA.
>>
>>65427471
The Gen 1 was only officially rated for lead-core 7.62x39mm, and presumably 7.62x51mm at a standoff. The Gen 2 is reportedly at least as good as the new rifle-rated Ops-Core and TW helmets, so full RF1. I don't know about BFD, but I'm guessing it has also improved a lot.
>>
>>65427486

If you're in the hood right now the majority of threats will be glocks with switches. Yeah, ARPs, turkshit semis, and dracos on a bad day but that's a bad day. If you have BALCS soft + rifle hard then you're going right down the middle and aren't relying on weird solutions.
>>
Anyone want a folding ballistic shield disguised as a briefcase? Either a "IIIA+" (IIIA plus 7.62x25 steel core, because Chinesium and that round's a major issue in Hong Kong - will pop typical IIIA) or Level III all-PE.
https://jinwudun.com/products/foldable-bulletproof-briefcase-nij-iiia-rated-lightweight-uhmwpe-material-portable-4-fold-design

You can now conceal a shield in business environments... affordably!

>How do you propose matching the coverage of BALCS
That is for shrapnel which is not in my threat assessment generally. I do like more coverage and yes SAS dragonskin is the best current option for more coverage but is expensive. I wish the chinese would compete in that market.
>concealable vest soft armor
I said overt not covert, different ball game
>glocks with switches
That is used against unarmored people 5 yards away. Very inaccurate and any none vital hit with 9mm is not serious. Anyone with an AR would easily overmatch a glock switch. Draco's and ARs are a far bigger threat. To be honest those people would be overrun in no time we can look to history to predict the future and those people pose little threat in a openly hostile environment when the numbers are not overwhelmingly on their side.
>>
>>65427623
Jinwudun is good for something... sometimes. Skirts, shields, visors, extremity armor, and sketchy Level III helmets.
I'd prefer GBES for extremity armor but their shit is mucho moolah lately. Like their forearm IIIA though.
>>65427628
>That is for shrapnel which is not in my threat assessment generally.
Was thinking more IIIA / HG2 for CONUS. Frankly every attempt to raise armor plates to match soft armor coverage has been a disaster.
>SAS dragonskin is the best current option for more coverage but is expensive
The B4C stuff is too expensive right now for mere RF2 protection. If we're going full bore, full coverage overt I'd want at least A1. M2AP is preferable but flexible rifle armor struggles with IV and has flr years.
>I wish the chinese would compete in that market.
Guard Dog had a chinesium knockoff FRAS but it got shut down by lawyers. Pity.
>I said overt not covert
Was referring to the cut of soft armor. Think typical police vest.
>Anyone with an AR would easily overmatch a glock switch.
Certainly, but it's far easier to conceal a glock than an ARP. Same reason, fundamentally, why you rarely hear of home invasions with dudes wearing plates. Looks real awkward if you and your three dudes get pulled over in platecarriers with 4SAS4s, and wearing armor during a felony is always a tack-on charge.
>>
>>65427572
40 boomers just bought plates that disintegrate when dropped and they probably don't know it needs soft armor.
>>
>>65427664
Well, I found a state of Ohio price list from 2019 and the discounted contract price for the LP was $110 a plate, from $200. Take that for what you will.
>40 boomers just bought plates that disintegrate when dropped
And it's rated single strike versus all threats, Fudds proven right once again!
>and they probably don't know it needs soft armor.
Not just any soft armor, only about a dozen very specific Safariland IIIA panels will do!

Also, can we take note of the fact DocGKR received TAP Gammas in the mail which arrived fucked up, just as anons received 4SAS4s in the mail fucked up fifteen years later?
>Durability: The TAP plates thin ceramic layer is susceptible to fracturing; several of the plates we tested exhibited small chips and cracks in the ceramic on arrival. These plates require careful handling and storage to prevent damage.
See link in >>65424488. On a side note, I do appreciate that Gilliam padded the hell out of the box of plates I ordered even though they were all-PE and therefore drop immune. Would be nice if Highcom's guys did that...
>>
>>65427694

What would happen if you doubled up IIIA panels under the X-CAL? Think cheap Botach Chinesium softs.
>>
>>65427296
Please be patient. I am retarded and still getting up to speed on deep ball /bag/ knowledge. It wasn't meant to be a vouch but, more of an example of what's on the used market around that price point. I probably should have known better since I've seen you guys mention the Highcom Striker fraud a couple of times.
I would have mentioned Protech or Busch Protective instead for that price bracket but, forgot about them since they hardly show up on ebay and GunBroker these days.
>>
>>65427728
It'd probably be fine. Safariland's specific panels aren't twice the strength of Botach's basic ass IIIA panels, and Botach has a IIIA+ if you want to use that. The IIIA panels are 1lb a pop for 10x12, the IIIA+ is 1.7lb which is god-awful but might actually work "properly" with the X-CAL.
Best case scenario you're at 5.46lb + 1.7lb, which is 7.16lb. This is for an SRT that isn't even rated for M855A1, is only rated for ONE 7.62x51mm M80 when Chinese 2.5lb PE plates will do a minimum of six, and weighs more than the IV+ 6.8lb Protech 2230-1.

The price is $30 for the plate, $80 for the IIIA+ panel, so you're $110 a plate not counting shipping. $220 a pair could get you some Paraclete 10079s or Protech 2014Gs or something. You're at 0.8" thick with the X-CALs and the IIIA+ so it's not exactly covert either. The LP just honestly sucks unless you're otherwise out of options.
>>
>>65427760

Oh, I know the X-CAL sucks, I was just curious if you could make it sorta work with cheapass Botach shit, which is all you can afford if you're buying X-CALs for the price since SG ran out of Italian surplus III PEs. That's if FedEx doesn't Messi your X-CAL delivery (fat chance!) and you get ceramic crumbs in a plate shape.
>>
>>65427737
All good, lol. There's nothing "fraudulent" about the Highcom Striker. The Highcom problem helmet is the RCH, since that was drummed up as this legit III+ helmet by clowns such as Apex Armor but in reality, using Highcom's actual documentation, it's just an overpriced as fuck ECH. This does accordingly hurt Highcom's credibility since they can shut Apex down at any time but aren't doing that, and therefore puts the Striker in a bad light too.
For the RCH, Apex was listing v0s higher than Highcom's v50s. That's a huge no no.
>>
>>65427770
With that IIIA+ panel, probably, but at $110 a piece there are better options.
The LPs are years old at this point. If DocGKR was getting TAP Gammas delivered to him new with ceramic damage, and these X-CALs are even less robust than that, how much can one trust a decade of handling, law enforcement use, and several rounds of shipping?

It's fortunate that armor plates are rarely shot in anger. I have a feeling a lot of 0101.04 and do not drop plates won't pass muster if called upon. Sure, Doc's Gammas mostly worked even damaged, but they were "new"
Those 20,000+ or so 4SAS4s Highcom sold are a lawsuit waiting to happen too. TacShit did not ship them well.. for shit.
>>
>>65427777
Good to know. I love how Yushi Sun and Apex by extension became /bag/'s lolcow of sorts. Also nice quads.
>>
>>65427830
He was a member of /bag/ back in the day, back when the old guard ran it. Used to have a solid rep (at least in armor) and then just got shitty. It reflects poorly on Highcom that he's one of their top dealers, which is maybe part of why they're transitioning to doing direct sales and cutting dealers out.
>>
>>65427799

Oh, absolutely, at this point I'd trust some of the Botach offerings (at least Longfri produced ones) more than the "bro trust me cuh" X-CALs from Fuddbroker. As for the 4SUS4 and all the other wacky fly by night shit out there, caveat emptor. The body armor market truly is the Wild West outside of the current NIJ CPL. Forget crypto and startups, any moron can pack a Chinese plate carrier with random plastic/steel/ceramic chunks they got for pennies on the dollar and call it whatever "armor" level they want, then normies and even whole-ass PDs will buy it for $$$, only to find out it stops jack and shit, not even .22LR from a pistol at 50 yards. Hell you can probably build your own armor from pressed bonded fiberglass and alumina Home Depot tiles and it'd be better than some of the no-name shit on fleabay.

Unironically places like Botach, they sell Longfri PASGT IIIAs for like $170 new. They also have a surplus site for used gear they've gotten traded in by police departments, they've got used Ceradyne BA3A IIIA helmets for as low as $75.

Granted, IIIA won't stop a rifle but it's a LOT better than some rebadged bike helmet.

>Oh, absolutely, at this point I'd trust some of the Botach offerings (at least Longfri produced ones) more than the "bro trust me cuh" X-CALs from Fuddbroker
People really jumped the gun on the 5.5lb and 6lb Level IVs. They had problems, sure. Nominal sizing, cheap materials, no drop protection, high BFD, and shots would pass through in some dudes' testing because they were too close together. Fundamentally most the same issues as Highcom or current RMA plates, except with Silicon Carbide and PE so the Botachs ran lighter.
Their III+ plates are kinda eh but it's plug and play versus the X-CAL.
>The body armor market truly is the Wild West outside of the current NIJ CPL
Everyone seems to have either brand loyalties or brand disloyalties, so I liken it to twenty different religious denominations trying to figure out which one actually has it right.
>Hell you can probably build your own armor from pressed bonded fiberglass and alumina Home Depot tiles and it'd be better than some of the no-name shit on fleabay.
Some anons did use to do this, it was on the /pfg/ guide as a very last ditch option for if you couldn't afford 4SAS4s... I have said before RMA should have kept the old #1145 (old 1155 but without the drop pro) as a last ditch model to try and attract steeltards. Bad idea but would make them money.

I think people have poor impulse control and have to have shit RIGHT NOW, which is why armor sales lately are all racing to the bottom on price, why steel plates are still around, and why budget-focused guys like Gilliam are gaining ground. Gilliam's sold over a thousand of the cheapo cheat ringed $174 a set or so OA+ plates on Ebay alone. He struggled to move the $1k/set 9969s though and had to slash the price hard.
>>
>>65428734
It's called having disposable income. Maybe get your money up, not your funny up.
I actually have a few GMRS bubble pack radios on the shelf for that. they were 5 bucks per pair and they just take three AA-batteries. Even lucked out and they're on the new channel plan. But it's not my job to provide unprepared fags with good comms. They're like giving retards a whistle to blow in case of fire, a cheap trip wire if someone gets robbed or something. You can't change their programming, meaning a nosy kid fucking up my programming, just the PL tone or channel at most. I know you can use CHIRP disable a bunch and there are AA-battery cases for UV-5R, but that's okay.
If I use my roof mounted scanner antenna these cover the entire neighbourhood sufficiently. Thinking of getting a simplex repeater for those situations.

>self report
I think you meant to write something about projection. Nice try though.

>>65428737
not really, but the cheap sources seem to have dried up for the XTS2500 and EFJ's. Back then we were spreading out our budgets across different areas like transportation and getting a well put in on the property.

>>
>>65428797
NTA. Can you actually point to an example of an Ailunce shitting the bed where a Motorola or Hytera wouldn't?
Obviously no free lunch rule applies but if the Ailunce does check all the boxes, is the argument really that it's just not established?
It's got USB-C, AES-256, DMR, short on P25 though.
>>
>>65428794
OpenMANet looks incredibly dope, and I'd be looking into it if we actually used ATAK.
Meshtastic and MeshCore are far from tactical comms, so we just stick to two-way radio.
Buddy of mine picked up a node, but he only receives messages when he's in (view of) a metropolitan area. Might be something for suburbia, but again it's absolutely useless for fire watch and patrol duties since no instant voice comms. But it's super easy to get into according to my buddy, gotta give 'em that.

>>65428809
If you actually held an Ailunce and a Hytera or Motorola in each hand you wouldn't ask this question
>>
>>65428823
So you're paying 4x the price for a Hytera because it feels like it has better workmanship?
That's one hell of a markup.
>>
>>65428809
Based off a two second google, there are multiple reports of the radio having a terrible spurious emission profile, issues with firmware, issues with obtaining programming software, and general unreliability from a support standpoint.

If you’re okay with buying mystery meat stuff just to save a few hundred bucks then more power to you, as long as you are willing to put up with the quirks you are inviting. If you don’t place that much value in comms then you are never going to justify stepping up to a better platform and thats fine I guess, but it doesn’t mean everyone else has to be held back to operate at your desired entry point in the market

No, I'm paying 4x the price because I trust it'll still work if I walk in the rain all night or it goes airborne in a hand-to-hand engagement etc.
Plenty of examples of cops using their Motorola as an improvised baton and it surviving to call in backup.

Chief, to use an actual armor analogy you're trying to justify $2,100 a set Hesco 4800s or a $2,000 Ops Core to people who are looking at chinese Gilliam plates and chinese Militech helmets. Wrong scene.
This is why anons are pushing back. Yes the Hytera or Moto are gonna be better built than an amazon radio, but most anons rarely even use their radios, let alone beat the shit out of perps on the street with it.

If enough interest in gear is generated and a community starts to form where it warrants a general, bam, /gq/ reborn if necessary. Thats the beauty of this site, it doenst need to be like leddit with permanent subs.

Dudes get mad about this and worry about fragmenting already small populations, but I would say is whats worse is driving out the population even interested in contributing to /gq/ in general with poorfaggery and circular discussions on body armor day in and day out. And you can’t just say

And this is the crux of the issue, generals do not come back when they die. When was the last time you saw a /pfg/ or /bag/?

>when 2 posts before you actively try to quash discussion by claiming this is the wrong scene for wanting to discuss something better than absolute bottom of the barrel entry level radios.
Wasn't aware this was a discord. The point I was making is that people like >>65420259 >>65421965 and >>65422197 and >>65422345 aren't interested clearly in top shelf shit. You're selling BMWs to dudes who just want a camry and then having a melty when they aren't interested.

Similarly, there is a reason why basically nobody cared when Adept launched the new 4.6lb $3k a set Adept Emperor Level IV. People are not interested in top of the line right now. Market conditions.
>>
>>65428972
>no one is flipping lids
Bud we've been at this for over an hour, I can smell the frustration.
>when a few years ago it was the level-set understanding that /gq/ is for, well, gear queers who are interested in something more than just say a chicom chest rig if they want to carry magazines.
>chicom chest rig
Thought we were talking about the whole poor-to-not-poor spectrum here?
Anyway, those guys left and moved on, and /pfg/ moved in.
>>
>>65428884
Never used them, I’ve heard rave reviews though. They do seem obnoxiously large which might lead to issues with wearing a multiple straps like a pack/sling/camelbak etc.

Not cheaper, but I’ve been using the pads from dust aspirations. Incredibly comfortable and unobtrusive, make wearing a heavy plate carrier a dream. Worth scrounging the pennies imo.
>>
>>65428982
>when was the last time I saw a /pfg/ or /bag/
oddly enough, im staring it in the face right now. Unfortunately I was meaning to stumble into a /gq/
>>
Also, on further review, literally nobody on the internet except here discussed the Adept Emperor except for ONE comment on reddit.
I get the armor autism here is arcane to people who aren't themselves armor autists, but the problem fundamentally is that a "just fucking nylon man" /gq/ like most forums will get sucked dry by reddit, the killer of independent online discussion. What does old or new /gq/ have to say about an LV-120 that /r/tacticalgear doesn't?
Curiously, reddit armor discussion is shilled to shit and non-technical, and this place lacks those weaknesses, hence why the five or so armor autists hide out here.

If we had the traffic I'd agree a nu-/bag/ would be better, but we don't and the end result is that the autists would be there and it would fall off page 10 after 40 posts, and shills would roll back in here.
>>
>>65428999
so by your own admission, why not just rename this to a more fitting description of the general
/pfcatrncag/
poor fag chink armor and toy radio no crye allowed general
>>
>>65428939
I have a set of decent Hesco plates coming in soon, should cut the weight down by like 6 pounds. Although water and ammo haven't been accounted for yet.

PIG shoulder pads look nice though.
>>65429001
>dust aspirations
Will be looking into these as well, thanks.
>>
>>65429003
Then you must have had a coma man, because /gq/ was armor central even in 2022-2023 under different autists, during the dark reign of ADEPT SHILL.
>who wouldn't shut the fuck up about the Adept Colossus being THe OnLy CiVilIan AccessIbLe Sp00k Pl4te evar!!!
Wonder what happened to that guy. I'll admit my armor 'tism is an eight on a 1-10 scale, but I at least talk about different products rather than schizoposting about how we all need M993 protection to go to the grocery store.
>>
>>65429010
That's above my paygrade, go ask A2. He's the thread king, not me.

But yes I do call this joint /gqbagpfgnvflarpgalig/ from time to time. Truly the master general.
>>

>should cut the weight down by like 6 pounds
Very nice. For the guys in the back, anon here would be getting lambasted for not buying 9x11s from Highcum or RMA on reddit, because Hesco Bad because they had a few NIJ suspensions more than half a decade ago.

Bro china makes everything. If you are buying the cheapest china radio yes its not great but you can get really good waterproof DMR shit for a good deal and they are very good radios. Wasting money is not a flex

Alright, because the radio discussion ran to the taco bell shitter and missed the toilet, this is a threadly reminder that Botach has cheap cop surp shields!

>I do actually agree it's a problem
We all have 3 choices, be PART of the problem, BE the problem or be part of the solution. I was going to post my sweet 55% off snowshoes yesterday, but... not armored snowshoes. TSLs, even better than MSRs, excepting they don't provide for tail attachments. I got a med and lg for big and tall, winter pack weight and sexual dymorphism reasons. But yeah, /out/.
>>
>>65429063
This reminds me of that guy I knew on the High Road who spent ten thousand dollars on four kitted out JPCs for himself and his three sons, with Hesco 4800s and 4101LV sides, and then gave his daughter in college a single IIIA+ RMA plate for her backpack.
>you are my least favorite child, here's an RMA.
>Wasting money is not a flex
The real flex is getting great deals on tbe cheap. For example, my Protech 2230s for $300 or that lucky son of a bitch who got a pair for $200.
>>
>>65429078
>excepting they don't provide for tail attachments.
plate philosopher, stop buying snowshoes for your fursuit man.

That pic goes hard though.

Alright, please explain how paying $5,000 for a new 1936P is better than $500 for a used one.
Or $660 for a Highcum Striker vs $75 for a copsurp BA3A and $40 for new pads because a cop gooned on the old ones.

how difficult is it to understand that when someone doesn't want to talk about what you want to talk about, and has explicitly asked you not to, it becomes very tiresome when all you do is keep talking about what you want to talk about, especially when you demand all kinds of proof, sources and other shit, while we just didn't even want to talk about it at all in the first place.
Just learn to shut up once in a while, please. I beg you.

It's also very indicative of chud basement dweller tier emotional/social maturity btw.
>>
>>65429167
So your entire speel against people trying to save money (muh juzz as good crowd ruins discussion!) is to throw an ad hominem. Right back at ya, that's childish.
>It's also very indicative of chud basement dweller tier emotional/social maturity btw.
I was gonna shill you a projector from Botach Surplus but you clearly already have one in 4k.

There is nothing wrong with dudes discussing deals. If it's overly armor focused, talk about other shit. I do not know why you need permission to do that.
>Just learn to shut up once in a while, please. I beg you

I need to trim down a lot of the nylon I’ve collected throughout the years. Was fun to collect but I’ve got way too many redundant plate carriers and chest rigs. Gotta figure out what I want to keep and what is getting released into the wild.

As far as plate carriers, I’ve got the LV119 overt and covert, Crye CPC, Paraclete HPC, FCPC v5, a custom Velsys BALCS carrier, JPC 2.0, 6094 slick, and a custom DTS LV119-ish pc that my buddy sewed up (pic related)
Maybe a few more I’m forgetting, but thats off the top of my head. Chest rigs/LBE is kinda the same story, broad spread of stuff. And yeah, too many pouches to think about. I’ve got probably going on 20 of those 27 gal totes full of various gear and equipment.
>>
>>65429307
I'd keep the custom LV119, covert LV119, BALCS, and JPC. Build around a light-medium-heavy selection with the BALCS carrier as your contingency heavy carrier. Throw delts and abdominal on that if you haven't already.
Then like two chest rigs so you have light setups and maybe a loaner.

The custom PC is staying but those others are all going.

fuckers have no pants probably so they can shit in full kit. In future war we must embrace the dookie butter dingleberry meta. Enemy drones will trace our dingleberries and our cocoa pebbles on the battered fields of war.
We will hide like mice our droppings will fill the holes. We will harden them in fire and use them as shotgun pellets to shoot them down.

Is there, or will there ever be, a good source to acquire pen flares, pop flares, or what have you? Signaling is an underrated, essential piece of kit but it's staggering how hard it can be to find military flares. Even parachute flares you'd see for boating can be a pain to find and aren't the cheapest to order online, either

Hytera but it's mostly shilling and that DMR is on-the-fly usable with ATAK but P25 is equally capable with little effort from my surface level reading. Hytera is cheap and very high quality but they're also Chinese. Personally, while I own a Hyeta base station to tinker with, I'd prefer to continue using my XTS5000 and push for my friends to acquire them (or EFJ 5100s or XTS2500s) or get some more to pass around
