Buckle up motherfuckers it's science time. This lesson is on /wcg/'s favorite topic, body odor! First, let's start with the different kinds of glands on the human skin. Eccrine sweat glands are all over the body and are primarily responsible for thermoregulation via the evaporative cooling of sweat from the skin. Eccrine glands mostly excrete salt water with only trace amounts of sugars, proteins, lipids etc. Sebaceous glands are found in hair folicles and excrete a reportedly odorless, oily subtance called sebum (yep) which consists of triglycerides, wax esters, squalene, cell debris, and fatty acids (lots of oily, long-chain carbon molecules). Appocrine sweat glands are also found around hair follicles, but more specificallly around the pits, groin, nips, ears and eyelids (sebaceous glands are also more concentrated in these areas). Appocrine sweat glands also secrete a reportedly odorless, oily fluid similar to sebum. The ooey, gooey organics from sebaceous and appocrine sweat glands help lubricate hair so you're not giving yourself friction burns and also slows the evaporation of sweat from those concentrated areas to reduce dehydration (they're hot areas~). Appocrine sweat glands aren't active until puberty and are primarily activated by the sex hormones estrogen/testosterone and as a response to anxiety, stress, fear, sexual stimulation, and pain. Sex hormone metabolites are present in appocrine secretions, but I found inconclusive/conflicting results on the pheromone response humans actually experience from their presence (although this fucking general makes me wonder). There's also apparently a apoeccrine gland which is a hybrid of eccrine/appocrine glands. (1/4)

Thioalcohols are organic molecules containing -SH (sulfur) and -OH end groups, they are volatile meaning they readily evaporate, and the human sense of smell is sensitive to them in even small quantities. In short, thioalcohols produced by bacterial metabolism of organic molecules in your sweat are source numero uno for boy (and girl) stank. (2/4)

This reportedly results in a more 'fruity' body odor. Liver disease, kidney disease, and other metabolic disorders affect your body's ability to metabolize and eliminate wastes and toxins which then end up in higher concentrations in your sweat. Situations like these result in astringent (bleach-like) odor. Consumption of foods high in sulfur (onions, garlic, cabbage, broccoli, red meat) can lead to more intense body odor. I should say in the three cases mentioned above, I'm not certain whether the presence of the aforementioned molecules or their metabolism by bacteria are the ultimate source of different/intensified odor. Also, things that cause you to sweat more give more food to the bacteria to make more thioalcohols. Infections from atypical bacteria that produce different metabolites could also be a source of bad sniffs. (3/4)
