Even hardcore bible thumpers don’t defend “their” book as fervently as Tolkien fans do.

he's right, you know. First time I read it, I noped out at Bombadil and Dingleberry Diarrhea-daughter.
Second time I read it, I skipped ahead to Bree and Weathertop. It starts getting good then.

Does anyone else these days feel like Tolkien's actual writing has become obscured?

Every time there's popular "discourse" about Tolkien it always feels like people are engaging with the mere pastiches and cliches around his work, rather than considering the things he actually wrote.

Unironically what some good classic novels (60s-80s?) for strong barbarian 'fus? It's one of those situations that always stymie me where an archetype emerged that clearly encapsulates the whole of an idea, but tracing it back to actual material ends up being harder than expected. Red Sonja wasn't even an actual Howard character.

And the movie is adaptation of the book. Gong Li's beauty is just better attantion grabber than this. The movie is also quite different from the book.

>movie is also quite different from the book.
c'mon the only difference is there's no water buffalo at the end
>>
>>24967876
There are more differences, for example the novel has nothing about puppets and there's whole puppetry symbolism in the movie. The book is more honest-to-life and less 'art', it's like any symbolism in the book feels almost accidental like all things in are.
But holy moly is Gong Li at her peak in it.

He was written by a shitty author and lives in a shitty story. He’s also probably pissed that the only reason he’s relevant is because his shitty short stories legacy is carried on by autistic teenagers who don’t even have the attention span to read the 13 page story he’s from and have to watch YouTubers talk about him.

English is such a shit language. For me the nail in the coffin for English was when I learned that the problem of ambiguity between argument and explanation, where all you have to disambiguate is context, which they talk about in logic books, is not something which is universal in logic, but rather is a problem of English. Other languages don't have this problem. English is a low IQ language. All it's good for is dumbing down the masses.

The picture shows an advantage of German over English with the highlights. The links are the same book, one is the book, the other is audio. The discussion in the pic was about Athenaze, a textbook for Classical Greek, and that was someone's personal opinion in regards to textbooks for Classical Greek. I think the natural method is great to get started learning German for someone who speaks English. Then after a while you can try other things.
>>
>>24968147
I enjoy studying it. Its not too far off from English so its somewhat intuitive, but its got its own share of challenges. and its worth it cause there's plenty to read.
my favorite part is picking up on weird cognates and that sorta stuff. I would guess learning French might be a similar experience.
I think its the sort of thing that improves your English; not just in the abstract as is true of language learning generally, but in terms of vocabulary - makes you reconsider the meanings and relations between some words, and helps highlight a lot of Germanic words which might go less used in English over French equivalents.

Thanks, pretty insightful, I've been watching some videos about Anglish, English spoken without french words and it's the exact same just with lesser known words or words used in different ways. I am at a point where I can understand small bits of a conversation but responding is still hard, still more of a listener and reader than a speaker.

I've read that exact edition of the book and it was terrible, horrible repetitive language to the point of insanity. I'm currently rereading it (thanks a LOT OP) but this time it's the Penguin edition.

The difference in quality is like night and day, wtf? The version I'm reading now is so much better translated/written what gives? Is this how all translations are?
