FAQ:
>What is worldbuilding?
Worldbuilding is the process of creating entire fictional worlds from scratch, all while considering the logistics of these worlds to make them as believable as possible. Worldbuilding asks questions about the setting of a world, and then answers them, often in great detail. Most people use it as a means of creating a setting or the scenery for a story.
>"Isn't there a Worldbuilding general in >>>/tg/ already?"
Yes, there is. However, that general is focused on the creation of fictional worlds for the intended purpose of playing TTRPG campaigns. Here you can discuss worldbuilding projects that are not meant to be used for a roleplaying setting, but for novels, videogames, or any other kind of creative project.
>"Can I discuss the setting of my campaign here, though?"
If you want to, but it would probably be better to discuss it on >>>/tg/ . We don't allow the discussion of TTRPG mechanics, however. If you want to discuss stats or which D&D edition is best, this is not the place.
>"Can I talk about an existing fictional setting that is not mine?"
Yes, of course you can!
>"Does worldbuilding need to be about fantasy and elves?"
Worldbuilding, as already stated above, and contrary to what many believe, does not inherently imply blatantly copying Tolkien. In fact, there are many science-fiction setting out there, and even entire alternative history settings which do not possess supernatural elements at all. Any kind of science fiction book has an implied setting at least, which involves a certain degree of worldbuilding put into it.

think about the architecture as an extension of the element (ie water buildings should have a flow, not look all bunched up and awkward). look into the symbolic meanings of the elements to different cultures, or how they worship deities who represent those elements.

>Are there any prominent ruins, abandoned places or remains of great cities in your setting?

Main setting is basically a portal fantasy.
Certain portals aren't just sealed off, but have whole fuck off dungeons to kill off anyone who isn't very strong or clever from getting anywhere near portals that lead to dangerous places.
Which leads to
>Have there been any kind of large scale disasters in your setting?
The main portals sealed in this way lead to "the land of the immortals". The Immortals were absurdity powerful mages who eventually warped and twisted the main realm they existed on during the Assertion War.
Now it's a chaotic wasteland filled with monsters, mutants, and deadly dungeons filled with the most forbidden of forbidden bits of knowledge and magic in the multivers.

I am basically saving this info for the very end of the book I am currently working on.
A last revelation and explanation of why the vampire lord is where he is and what event was powerful enough to force him into torpor (vampire death sleep).
Basically he used to live in the same realm as the Immortals, nearly died and watched everything he loved or cared about be destroyed in seconds due to the indirect effects of two of the Immortals fighting during the Assertion War, and with his last remaining strength ran through a portal that he sealed behind him, made a few minions to set some stuff up in the new world, and then dropped nearly dead in a sarcophgos to very slowly recover and await a point in time when the Immortals are gone.

Beyond that most ruins get reused in pretty short order by someone or something. Nothing stays truly abandoned for all that long.

I'm not sure if there is a personified deity, but the Bible does have a high degree of the poetic genius (as Blake describes). KJV onlyists love to mention the "power" of the scriptures, but what's objectively happening is that the aesthetic quality of the poetry and prose is very captivating.

1- General culture referenced in most of the A.C. western canon, mythological stories, and the base for the understanding of all abrahamic religions.
2- All humans are sinners, we are born this way. Nobody is perfect and we shouodn't judge others because we are in their same position. We should rather help them in their battle against evil
3- Forcing rules upon ourselfs that go against nature never worked and never will. To defeat the evil in us we need something more: a relationship. Through a relationship of trust with Jesus, we can get salvation (freedom from sin). If you put your whole trust in him, then you will enter a state of reflection and you will attempt to be a better person.
4- The knowledge to debunk fake myths about the book. Sadly, there are hundreds of them.
5- The experience of a beautiful story that goes from the creation of the world to the end of it
6- The realization that John should be put at the same level of Homer at least. Gospel of John AND book of revelations? That's crazy.

The Flashman Papers. They're more comedic-historical.

>During the course of Fraser's novels, Flashman goes from his expulsion from school into the army. Although he is a coward who tries to run away from any danger, he is involved in many famous military episodes from the 19th century, often taking actions that cause or affect events, such as his flatulence affecting the Charge of the Light Brigade,[a] or being the person who probably shot George Armstrong Custer. When circumstances run against him and he is forced to fight, he often does so relatively capably. Despite his cowardice and his attempts to flee, he becomes a decorated war hero and rises to the rank of brigadier-general. He also meets people who either were notable at the time—such as Benjamin Disraeli and the Duke of Wellington—or became well known after Flashman met them—such as Abraham Lincoln. Flashman either has or tries to have sex with most of the female characters. By the end of the ninth book he estimates that he has had sex with 480 women.

>It was a dark and stormy night; the rain fell in torrents—except at occasional intervals, when it was checked by a violent gust of wind that swept up the streets (for it is in London that our scene lies), rattling along the housetops, and fiercely agitating the scanty flame of the lamps that struggled against the darkness.

More description =/= more better prose.

Basically I'd like to understand why he felt the need to abandon the usual progressive strategy of pushing the BIG changes anti-democratically through the courts.

This was always the way to go for the prior 100 years.

I know he was concerned that this had somewhat run out of steam (as he mentions several times in his speech writing notes in the margins).

Obviously we now see the results of trying to force a major change through the democratic process instead of forcing it on the populace at the end of a lawsuit.

But was there a general consensus among progressives at the time that illusory democracy (where all actual sovereignty is held by the judiciary) thing had in fact played all its cards/ his hand was forced, or was Obama going solo here?

Lemme explain something to you right now. The ACA was plan based on a Republican thinktank group that had already been squeezed through in Massachusetts. It is a gift to the insurance industry with marginal (and now sidestepped) provisions that they not drop people for "pre-existing conditions" after you've paid them a ton. It is shit, but it used to be even shittier. It is shit now because of the private insurance industry.
The general consensus among progressives is that they would like Bernie Sanders Medicare for all INSTEAD. This is why Hillary lost so handily.

Show don't tell is good advice for beginners who have no fucking clue what they're doing and can't write a scene where stuff happens with characters. Sort of like "don't use adverbs" is good advice for people who write like this >>24972218
But when autistic morons take this advice too literally, as if it's the key to success, they in for a rude awakening. No. Having literally zero adverbs in your story won't make it successful or a good read. No. Showing every single thing regardless of how unimportant it is will not make your story a hit.

Ungrateful nigger like you had no idea how blissful it is to be able to read a book in silence with your friends, relatives, or family. Why are women like this? Even in this day and age. They encourage women to divorce and leave their husbands/families, then disappear when she has to deal with the ramifications of that. Or their friends in stable relationships (who also encouraged her to divorce and to go on tinder flings etc after) begin to distance themselves very soon instead of following the same degeneracies they encouraged

Dating or marrying a woman who has had sex is disgusting. Dating or marrying a woman who has been in love with another man is even more disgusting. That said, 99% of women grow hopelessly in love with the guy who takes their virginity and never forget him. In general they never forget their first loves. Like I said, read The Dead by Joyce.
>>
>>24965698
My favorite chapter in this book and the one which I find myself constantly returning to is the one where Levin reminisces on his heartbreak after being rejected by Kitty, and how much anguish he's in that his lifelong desire to marry and share his love with someone has to be delayed yet again, and he desperately hopes that the news will come one day of Kitty announcing her engagement and he could put his memory of her to rest. He decides on being patient and focuses on his life in the estate so he doesn't have to bear the humiliation he endured. And then the harsh winter that Anna has just trapped herself into thaws into the most wonderful spring for Levin as he becomes a more rigorous person with the most beautiful descriptions of natural life and greenery that I've ever read before. Today the word of her engagement got back to me in the worst way possible and revealed just how deep the deception went and how much I was humiliated for nothing, but I feel no relief. I just pray to have a spring like Levin's so that this winter in my soul can finally thaw.

Why is it, that every time I’m reading Heidegger, I get the feeling that he is saying something new and profound in philosophy? (Everything else in the history of Philosophy seems to expand on or restate something already incapsulated in ancient philosophy)
I’m not yet able to put it into words, but I will work on it in the coming year.

>>

I get that. But let’s be real for a second. If one reads being and time for the first time (and one understands what is being said), how can one not come to the conclusion that Heidegger broke out of the traditional course of western philosophy in order to tackle fundamental problems that just weren’t discussed in western philosophy?
For me it’s clear as day.
There’s also other stuff Heidegger introduced into philosophy, like reading platonic texts with his students to reconstruct what these texts were about, before him this wasn’t practiced in university. Today at least at European universities this is the bread and butter of philosophical works at universities (mainly reading and discussing the original texts, not just Plato of course).

True and correct takes. Those classics are also like 100 chapters and most Chinese people don't read them they only know the stories through TV and films. No Chinese person will ever tell you to actually READ journey to the west they tell you to watch the film.

Philosophy like zhuangzi mengzi Confucius etc is worth reading but it's in classical Chinese which is not the same as modern Chinese and most Chinese people today need translations or a lot of footnotes to understand it.

The bulk of western fantasy (yes even today) is based on Christian philosophy, or its bastard child humanism. Good and evil, sin and redemption, sacrifice, justice, moral character arcs, etc.
The remaining works that aren't, are largely based on some flavor of nihilism or existentialism.

There's nothing wrong with this, but I want something fresh. Off the top of my head the only western fantasy series that isn't really based on the above is the Earthsea series.

>the fantasy genre was literally made by devout Christians
The genre arguably predates Christianity in the first place.

Even in the modern, English speaking, western sense, there is still that whole other strain of fantasy that came before and still existed after Tolkien. Case in point >>24972151
>I read the works of Eddison, long after they appeared; and I once met him. I heard him in Mr. Lewis’s room in Magdalen College read aloud some of his works–from the Mistress of Mistresses, as far as I remember. He did it extremely well. I read his works with great enjoyment for their sheer literary merit. My opinion of them is almost the same as that expressed by Mr. Lewis on p. 104 of the Essays presented to Charles Williams. Except that I disliked his characters (always excepting the Lord Gro) and despised what he appeared to admire more intensely than Mr. Lewis at any rate saw fit to say of himself. Eddison thought what I admire ‘soft’ (his word: one of complete condemnation, I gathered); I thought that, corrupted by an evil and indeed silly ‘philosophy’, he was coming to admire, more and more, arrogance and cruelty. Incidentally, I thought his nomenclature slipshod and often inept. In spite of all of which, I still think of him as the greatest and most convincing writer of ‘invented worlds’ that I have read. But he was certainly not an ‘influence’.

If we define fantasy as supernatural elements, then that obviously goes as far back as the stone age. But by that point its no longer fantasy and more like ancient legends & myths. Since ancient humans literally believed in magic and dragons and spirits and what not. Tolkien created the fantasy that everyone knows about today and his Christian religion played a huge role in defining the fantasy genre.
