The hotel staff, I think, considers us useless freeloaders who have come to America – land of honest laborers with crewcuts – to eat them out of house and home. I know all about this. Everyone bitched about parasites in the USSR too, bullshitted about how you had to be useful to society. In Russia the people who bitched were the ones who worked least. I've been a writer for ten years now. It's not my fault that neither state needs my labor. I do my work – where's my money? Both states bullshit about the justice of their systems, but where's my money?

I started carrying around a notebook when I went out. I took it everywhere I went and put it on my nightstand when I slept. I bought a nice leather cover to keep it in and a fancy ink pen to write with. I felt very unique and hoped that people thought I was smart when they would see be scribbling in the book.

I’ve read that this is what writers do. They carry around notebooks, so they can always write when their muse whispers to them, so they are never without the means to record the words that appear in their minds. So I started carrying around a notebook, hoping a muse would sing to me and that letters would flash in my head, but it was never so easy for me. Words don’t appear in my head, I’ve got to force them in, I’ve got to struggle to remember vocabulary flash cards and lines of old poetry. My handwriting has always been atrocious, but it’s practically unreadable in my notebook since my hands shake when I try to write while standing or walking. The letters are all misshapen and because pages warp from the humid air, their all connected like cursive script because I don’t lift my pen off the page enough while writing.

After a month, I looked back at what I had written. It was all terrible. Dull descriptions of the grey carpet and off-white ceiling tiles of the building I work in. Poorly wrought poems about philosophers with preposterous rhymes. I was so ashamed of how awful it all was that I burnt the notebook (but I kept the leather cover and pen, those cost me money, why shouldn’t I keep them?)

Perhaps I’m not a writer. Perhaps I can carry around a paintbrush, but I’ll never be a painter. I wish I was a writer. I wish I was creative and capable of conjuring beauty.

Then don't write about flowers. If you're able to sense beauty, focus on wherever you find it at first. If you have trouble communicating that beauty, digest and dissect the prose of others until you've gotten a deep enough pool of terms and terminology to put thoughts to paper. Maybe flowers are something to return to later.
Are stars beautiful? Old houses? The wet symphony that plays on rainy days, dulled and warmed by the walls that separate you from the world? How about lizards?

What are your thoughts on (print)?Journalism? Both in general and specifically in your country.

Do great (print) Journalists qualify as literary figures?
>>
>>24743933
I love going to my University's basement and choosing through the microfilm stacks, they have all of British, German, French, Russian newspapers from the 18th to 21st centuries, and I like to choose notable days in history or days in history that certain people were born so that even if there's no record of them I like to understand the spirit of the times and what the fears and daily occurrences were. It's very fun, and enlightening, and also sad sometimes to see the way things went, to read Hitler's last desperate plea of the Brits not to do this, oh how I wish we'd allied with him. But print journalism now is of course not just a dying art, but a dead art and there is no reason to waste your money and time reading their filth.

It references a mentally ill kid who shot up a bunch of random people in a Walmart in El Paso, Texas. He himself was a Latino and targeted slightly darker Latinos. Not something a Muslim should be wearing, racism is against Islam.

All this junk is really poisoning the minds of the youth. Crusius was Jewish as well, or his parents were. You realize there are federal agents and military propagandists trying to push young people to suicidal acts of terror.

It is satanic honestly. It is called demoralization propaganda. In WWII it was these leaflets they would drop on enemy soldiers to try and demoralize them to stop fighting. That was comparatively innocent. Now it is a sociopathic online propaganda campaign to push youth to suicidal acts of terror to restrict gun rights and expand the power of the federal government.

I worry for what the wicked government, zionist imperialists really, are doing to the minds of the youth. This website offers a place to speak without censorship by the zionist imperialists, somewhat, but it is full of so much filth that I realize now it is not suitable for a Muslim to use.

Exceptions should not be made. I have tried to filter things and Halalize using the site, but this is not a good example. Please, Muslims, stop using these websites and every website that features any Haram at all. Including big social media sites. I will lead by example by cutting out this Haram.
>>

This better be a copypasta. Islam is a second rate religion, and is essentially the fan fiction of an inbred warlord that loved abusing children. The regions that Islam took over initially excelled in Philosophy, Art, and Mathematics, but the wretched satanic dogma of Islam destroyed it all, turning the region into a backwards medieval joke full of constant war. Trying to be a moral Muslim is an oxymoron and you should give up.

>It seemed like it could have been an interesting discussion
I think I got this.

Both Hal and Singer exist primarily to fulfill roles for the people around them and beyond that role, they don't really exist. This starts out as enough for them, they have something which makes the isolation bearable. but they lose those things and realize that it was never what they thought it was, it was a surrogate, a cope. The secondary characters are used to elaborate and explore it in more depth, they are complicit but also victims of the same thing. Hal even ends up unable to speak but he never really spoke in the first place, he just said what was expected, the few time he actually attempts to communicate, no one understands him even if they can understand the words he is speaking.

I think there may actually be a great deal in common between them but it has been awhile since I have read either, the biggest difference being that Carson was more interested in the effect, DFW the cause. Think I might reread them in the near future.

>The whole point of the Inferno is that Dante the Pilgrim is deeply flawed and that the view of God and the cosmos we get it that of the damned.
Why does all Abrahamic faith seem to boil down to this single claim of
>Bro I know earthly logic and reason is finding holes in my scripture and lore tome but it's about FAITH bro, you need to BLINDLY submit and just trust it will be OK, it's just beyond mortal comprehension nigga you simply cannot know but it's real I swear
Like at that point would you even want to experience the sort of Maximum Paradise that is, apparently, unknowable and undiscoverable to humans without help from this spurious entity that bears no apparent resemblance to mankind? "God created man in his image" is the claim, yet the ultimate end goal of mankind, the Heaven of heavens they all yearn to reach and will allegedly reach if they live in a very particularly pious way, is completely out of our reach except through this single entity that we're told is above human comprehension. How can it be both things at once? At that point it seems akin to putting a lobster in front of a Bloomberg terminal filled with a trillion dollars, it can't possibly comprehend the wealth nor power at its disposal and it never can, even with help. Oh but we're told that using our natural-born brains to try and make any sense of this is actually the path to HELL and you will suffer for infinity years if you don't fall into line and believe stories about a giant boat with every animal on it. Every time figures like Aristole or Plato come up, every Christian sweats and wrings their hands and has to make up new shit about how these unenlightened backwards barbaric pagans produced a more coherent line of thought than they did, ever.

>What is /wng/ — Web Novel General?
A general for readers and authors involved or interested in the growing phenomenon of 'web novels', serialized English fiction posted to websites such as: Royal Road, Webnovel, Scribblehub, Wattpad, Archive of Our Own, Spacebattles, HFY, various personal author websites, and more

>Why read web novels?
Not for prose or tight editing or deep themes, frankly. As a whole, web novels are infamous for content sprawl and pacing issues. If you enjoy having millions of words to sink your teeth into to get to know the world and characters, though, you may be interested. Keeping up with other readers on a weekly basis to discuss the story's events unfolding is another perk, in the same way discussing an ongoing TV show might be.

>Why write web novels?
Ease of access & potential for Patreon earnings. Many successful authors gain an audience on their website of choice and funnel their readers into a Patreon. See graphtreon.com/top-patreon-creators/writing for an idea of what some are earning.
Also, once an author has earned a fanbase, transitioning into an Amazon self-publishing career is several orders of magnitude easier than starting 'dry'.

>writing litrpg
>have mental stats that go up with level ups
>refuse to put numbers on anything, just explicitly say when a character does something Intelligent or Willpower or Charisma and tie to their current level in that stat
>literally no complaints
It's that easy. Keep things vague, hack it together, ignore anyone who tries to predict the story based on numbers. """I""" am the author! If I want to write some bigass threat coming in, I will, regardless of MC's stats! They don't mean shit!
Of course I also do have character arcs and I have characters reface earlier threats or stumbling blocks and show them clearing them with ease so that may or may not help.

I looked around and immediately realized that I was a Chinese webnovel protagonist. Finally, everything became clear to me, all at once. I was now aware of my destiny.

I then cast a spell that killed every person with the blood of that one guy who outbid me on that herb I really needed at that time, and this act wiped out a whole ethnicity from the face of the planet. I snorted coldly then murdered, in succession, my parents, siblings, close friends, friends, acquiantances , lovers, and finally my ex-lovers because, again. i was the protagonist of a Chinese WN.

Welcome to /pg/, where we read, write, and discuss pulp fiction.
No, not the Tarantino film, but the classic genre stories from early 20th-century magazines printed on cheap wood *pulp* paper. These tales offered thrills for the common man and let imaginations soar.
Though the magazines are gone, the spirit lives on, and here at /pg/, we explore the worlds, characters, and stories they inspired. So come on in and join the discussion!

>Who knows more about horses, a biologist who studies horses and the literature on them or someone who lives with and has trained horses their entire life?
Even when given total freedom to craft an analogy that perfectly supports your point, you fall well short of the goal.
There's not so much as "knowing about horses". Do you mean horse medicine? Horse husbandry? Are you working for a farm, or a vet, or a horse trainer?
A person who has worked with horses all their life would make a good trainer or breeder, but they'd be a lousy and dangerous vet, and their skills may not easily transfer to a role that's outside the region they learned in, eg. American horse management vs. European, or even Montana vs. New England.
That's why schools exist. You take your passions and (relatively) limited lived experiences and learn how to generalize them, or alternative to specialize them. You fill in the gaps, and learn how to better respond to new information and ideas once you're outside of school.
It isn't some machine taking your passion for horses and killing it, and it's not some imagined person who loves horses but only academically (??). It's a tool, one of many, that you use to pursue your passions, even if your passion is simply "make money in the least miserable way possible"

There are subjects that cannot be taught through literature alone, either because the knowledge is so esoteric or because there are few people teaching it. College is good for that.
The competency crisis across many white collar jobs is turning them into trades, though. They are less about credentials, more about getting your foot in the door for internships. Criminal law is quickly becoming one of these.
