Transcendental Argument for the Existence of God thread.
>For the laws of logic to exist, they must be grounded in an omnipotent, omniscient, eternal being (God)
>Laws of logic exist
>Therefore God exists.
This applies to all matters of metaphysics, epistemology and ethics.

Logic is the human brain's capacity for seeing patterns. We evolved it to track prey, avoid predators, and determine where berries were most likely to grow. Logic is not physically measurable, therefore it cannot be said to truly exist
>>
>>24689011
Stop it, we're /this/ close to someone just claiming that knowing anything is inherently impossible and that there's no such thing as reason.
>>
>>24689035
So you believe that logic and therefore the laws of logic didn't exist prior to humans observing them?
>If a god that defies the laws of reason can create a universe supposedly, why can the universe itself or whatever cosmic label you want to put on this thing not defy the current laws of reason and birth something?
Within the worldview that I subscribe to, it's because it was divinely revealed to us that the world operates in a regular way and you can come up with all sorts of questions a la
>What if God decides to suspend the laws of logic
But we know that this is not the sort of thing that He does.
>>24689064
You've guessed it anon. Well, "guessed" requires much leeway on my part, since I've said from the start that reason is impossible without God. Good try though, I'm eager to see how you turn it around.
>>
>>24689074
>So you believe that logic and therefore the laws of logic didn't exist prior to humans observing them?

They did not exist then and they do not exist now. Logic is either inconsistent or incomplete. Not only do no universal laws exist because of this; they don't exist because they're totally fucking made up in our mind. A byproduct of evolution. A cosmic joke which started out as a way of getting us a quick burger and ended up with us spending way too much money on humanities departments
>>
>>24689099
Spare me the rigamarole. A rock can not be a rock and something other than a rock simultaneously. Is that true now, was it true before there were any humans to observe rocks?

Why is the stereotype that Russian literature is so bleak and depressing so common? I've started reading it chronologically (finished some Pushkin and Gogol, and now I'm on Goncharov) and yeah, sure, Russia is dark and cold and there are some tragic stories, but the overarching feeling I've gotten is humor. It's fucking hilarious, actually.

It captures the hilarious yet holy desparation that runs through the traumatized russian spirit all the while exalting the vastness of this strange part of the world. I think you'd get a pretty good idea of what to expect by watching the BBC documentary they did on Erofeev at the end of his life, back when they had to put a voicebox in his throat because he ruined his vocal chrods with all the vodka he kept drinking. I personally don't drink at all, but I can understand the how and the why when it comes to russian alcoholism.

I read my first Turgenev a couple of days ago (Home of the Gentry). And while I liked Tolstoy and Dostoevsky better, it was still pretty good and I enjoyed it. I especially enjoy devout characters, so Liza was my favorite.

What did I just read?

Are all 20th century novels this meandering and nonsensical?

Why is critical thinking or logic not taught in schools anymore? It seems like education is just getting worse and worse.

You sound like a fucking idiot, do you think there should be a specific critical thinking class? What do you think they're doing in math and English class?

Critical thinking cannot be taught in school. "Learning to learn" is some bullshit made up by humanities departments so they can justify wasting taxpayer dollars

they're essentially shitposting by making a whole lot of very obscure references and writing in the most obtuse way possible in order to encourage a groundbreaking way of approaching all philosophical problems both as a hopeful gesture and as a giant fuck you to the general word salad atmosphere of french theory from the 60s onwards. what they say doesn't matter as much as how you feel when reading them. approach it as you would approach poetry, or futurist/early surrealist literature. remember: have fun.

fuck them then even if I enjoyed Nick Land's Meltdown which I assume it's inspired on them since he referenced both

Sure. A lot of scientists think we’re limited inherently, since we’re stuck in three dimensions.

That doesn’t mean some higher dimensional can’t understand something we don’t, or can’t.

It’s like assuming God wouldn’t understand Himself. Of course He would. His capital-m Miracles wouldn’t be capital-m Miraculous to himself. Same way Tolkien’s elves aren’t magical beings to themselves, or how Gandalf isn’t a wizard back home in Valinor.

God is clearly some sort of higher dimensional godlike lifeform. He’s too big to fit inside our perceptions. This is why he incarnates himself as a three dimensional human being. This is why the ‘holy spirit’ is the equivalent of his fingertip barely grazing the surface. The Trinity is satisfying because it describes a higher dimensional entity.

One can critique reason for its (our) limitations rather than reason itself. Reason is not obligated to be understood.

What's the deal with pseuds and Gnosticism?

>Instead the very foundations of the universe and existence itself are evil.
The foundations and features you've listed are not inherently evil, they can only be considered evil as a result of the limitations of human existence and our limited ability to understand the world around us in an unbiased manner. And attempts and desires to understand the whole of reality as objective truth are primarily motives of western thought, not even inherent to humanity as a whole. I'm not very well versed in the philosophy of mathematics, but I don't think it can be taken for granted that it's an intrinsic feature of the universe; it may very well be a construct resulting from the development of formal logic and language. In short, an evil or ignorant creator diety becomes less essential once you get past the idea of human exceptionalism.

You could argue that the design of humans and other life on earth is "evil," given that we seem to have a higher proclivity for pain than for pleasure, but most people nowadays don't think of God as having designed life cell-by-cell; rather, God operates at a larger scale and provides answers to the big-pictures questions that science cannot answer. The Gnostics weren't privy to the origins of life and evolution as we are nowadays, and were trying to answer different questions than you are.

Same attraction as wicca, neopaganism, assorted magic garbage. Nobody actually knows what any of it meant so you can write your own headcanon and pretend you’re now part of the ancient traditions challenging the fake and gay status quo.

The great escape from the material plane turns out to be very close to jacking off to charge crystals in your basements.

>Nothing to do with resentment or my personal life
Your entire post is describing your pathetic, personal resentment about not being God. The existence of any form of adversity to your will at all is "evil". If you apply this kind of logic to daily life you're like a parody of a sociopathic narcissist.

Anyone notice that almost every author from every time feels the need to run anti-immortality propaganda? What is that? What’s so scary about the living forever that it requires non-stop propagandizing against? Is it just that people want to cope that dying is a good thing because they have no choice but to die? Why is it that whenever a character achieves immortality it’s depicted as an awful, depressing inhuman experience? Why is it NEVER explored how an immortal person can be in the lives of many more people across many generations?
12 replies and 1 image omitted. Click here to view.
>>
>>24688423
But this is not what happens. The immortal always seems to cling to some simpleton's mindset when in fact it should at a minimum be contemplative of an arc of history. Even if one ignores a baby crying at him for the millionth time because he knows the infant doesn't have experience to understand the truth of things, there should at least be some indication that's the case. Not just throwing childlike sophistry seemingly designed to make the protagonist look right.
>>
>>24687479
1) Presenting the idea that immortality might not be as cool as you think =/= propagandizing against it

2) living for 10,000 years would be awesome and objectively better. Living for 10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 years would be torture for the overwhelming majority of it
>>
>>24687902
the story is written by a mortal. Writing that would be like trying to write the process of solving an equation that you don't even know how to approach
>>
>>24688938
There’s a limit to how much information your brain can store. If you lived long enough you would be constantly forgetting things as new information comes in.
