What happened to /lit/? In the 2010s the philosophers of choice were all existentialists, Nietzsche being the biggest, but Camus having a lot of following too. Aside from the, some of the post-structuralists were big, and then of older thinkers everyone liked Hume.

Then we went through a weird transition period where German idealism got big, along with some modern esoteric stuff and Indian thought, particularly Shankara.

Now, I keep seeing existentialism and Hume getting shit on and /lit/ is simping for literal Dark Ages thinkers and gushing over Scholasticism.

Are we just running backwards through history fueled by sheer contrarinism?

Mainstream culture was also all about Boomer existentialism in the 2000s and went through a neo-Enlightenment phase. Are the economic conditions of neo-feudalism forcing us back to a neo-medieval philosophical moment? Did the fruits of extreme nominalism finally just turn people off (it probably too late, AGI is going to be born during a period where it will be fed tons of nominalism and emotivism)?

As I said before, there's also the fact that Reddit atheism won and THIS was the result. Reddit Atheism won, Christianity lost, but the world that resulted wasn't some glorious enlightened age of reason, truth, and beauty. The world that resulted was... this. Slop. Bugmanism. Consumerist filth. Empty hedonism.

It fucking sucks and it has basically totally discredited atheism, at least the Reddit variety. Reddit Atheism didn't lose because it lost, it lost because it won.

Who are you to judge what "actual belief" looks like? If someone goes to Mass every Sunday, if they go to Confession regularly, if they give to the poor and have an active prayer life, is that not enough to count as "actual belief," since none of us can look into the heart?

I prefer using full sized electronic typewriters personally. Mainly because I type too fucking fast for manuals to keep up with what I am throwing down. Which is a damn shame because I love a chunky bitch, boat anchor mechanical typewriter for the pure experience of hammering the living shit out of keys.

It's god damn primal. I am shoving my thoughts into existence by punching characters into paper like a neanderthal carving "UG!" Into a rock with another rock.

I'm not rearranging digital code into screens like some kind of technological fairy when I use an electronic typewriter. I am harassing an ancient power, one considered to be a tool of gods, to mar a pristine surface with hammered ink so that the world will know my innermost musings. Unfortunately, said musings is usually about female monsters can't get enough of human dick and how women are fucking trash at everything. Women are the niggers of the world is insulting toward niggers, at least niggers are good at violence and crime, women are good for nothing.

Don Quixote isn’t fantasy; that’s the whole point. The fantastic elements exist only as delusions of Don Quixote, and his misinterpretation of everyday things and events and the consequences of his doing so drive the story, particularly in book 1.

This work is so obscure but the prose is beautiful at points. I feel like the meandering plot and unsympathetic characters harm it though.

I found this poster a while ago folded in a book, idk what's it's purpose, what you think ?

Which e-reader do you have /lit/? Are you happy with it? Is it complicated to get books to it?

I am thinking about the Kobo Libra but it seems like getting books onto it is an extremely convoluted process that involves Calibre, KOreader, some plugins, and I don't even know what. And then I looked into Calibre and the first thing I see about it is that it doesn't let you put books in your own folders and it copies your entire library according to its folder scheme. Is there a better library program and a better reader or a better overall experience that isn't like installing Linux?

At this point from what I've read I think I should just continue buying actual paper books because this all just sounds like an extreme annoyance.

Or maybe I just need to install a good reader program on Windows. What's a good Windows program to read books in like ComicRack for comics?

I use the Forma which is the predecessor of the Libra; it's a great form factor.

You don't need Calibre, just plug it in and drag and drop. There's probably a way to use Wifi, but wifi gives you space aids, so use a freaking wire.

KOreader is good if you keep a lot of science texts in DjVu, but otherwise the native software is fine. I do have a lot of science texts and admit KOreader is a bit annoying.

Calibre; I only use it to convert books to different formats, and crack amazog books so I can put them in the Kobo.

Buy a used & serviced iPad mini. You might end up paying less than you would for a mid-high end e-reader, while having more functionality. The only downside is you have to charge it at least once a week if you use it often.

There's history of them deleting self-loaded books. AFAIK they've never bricked or killed any devices, at least not yet. I keep mine offline for this reason.
>>
>>24777830
My first one was an early model of Kobo I got off ebay dirt cheap, and it was great, I read Garden of Seven Twilights on it. End of 2023 I had won some money gambling on sports so I paid $400 for the Kobo with an 10 inch screen, and I don't use all of its features but I'm still very happy with it, I like these devices.
Any Kobo with at least a 7 inch screen is worth the money and some models are probably old enough to get second hand for cheap.

FAQ:
>What is worldbuilding?
Worldbuilding is the process of creating entire fictional worlds from scratch, all while considering the logistics of these worlds to make them as believable as possible. Worldbuilding asks questions about the setting of a world, and then answers them, often in great detail. Most people use it as a means of creating a setting or the scenery for a story.
>"Isn't there a Worldbuilding general in >>>/tg/ already?"
Yes, there is. However, that general is focused on the creation of fictional worlds for the intended purpose of playing TTRPG campaigns. Here you can discuss worldbuilding projects that are not meant to be used for a roleplaying setting, but for novels, videogames, or any other kind of creative project.
>"Can I discuss the setting of my campaign here, though?"
If you want to, but it would probably be better to discuss it on >>>/tg/ . We don't allow the discussion of TTRPG mechanics, however. If you want to discuss stats or which D&D edition is best, this is not the place.
>"Can I talk about an existing fictional setting that is not mine?"
Yes, of course you can!
>"Does worldbuilding need to be about fantasy and elves?"
Worldbuilding, as already stated above, and contrary to what many believe, does not inherently imply blatantly copying Tolkien. In fact, there are many science-fiction setting out there, and even entire alternative history settings which do not possess supernatural elements at all. Any kind of science fiction book has an implied setting at least, which involves a certain degree of worldbuilding put into it.

Why does it seem like there is a stigma around superhero books? Are they just oversaturated thanks to Marvel and DC? What would it take to make you interested in a story set in a superhero universe?
>>
>>24796172
They are not serious worldbuilding-wise.
Actually no, they are usually a mess worldbuilding-wise.
It's just a childish fantasy, not serious worldbuilding.
>>24784370
You shoulddddd at least hint at an area that would hint at where people get the food from. It's always a good detail to have. Like, when readers realize by their own accounts "oh so this is where most of the food comes from", that's the moment they will think you put some effort into your setting.

>They are not serious worldbuilding-wise
Would you mind elaborating? What distinguishes them from fantasy or sci-fi stories?
>>
>>24796242
On the contrary, can you point out a single superhero setting with serious and credible worldbuilding? Because as far as I see, superhero universes are either convoluted messes of what is considered cannon, or simply fail into cartoon-esque power fantasies and don't bother making a credible and interesting setting outside of the main narrative.
The problem, I believe, comes from the origin of this type of media: Superhero comics were about a power fantasy, like daydreaming of what could happen if you could fly and how you could make a difference in the world. Worldbuilding was just outside the equation back then, as it is now still.
Though, i'm not an expert and I will admit I just don't enjoy them, so I might be biased.

>The next real literary "rebels" in this country might well emerge as some weird bunch of "anti-rebels," born oglers who dare to back away from ironic watching, who have the childish gall to actually endorse single-entendre values. Who treat old untrendy human troubles and emotions in U.S. life with reverence and conviction. Who eschew self-consciousness and fatigue. These anti-rebels would be outdated, of course, before they even started. Too sincere. Clearly repressed. Backward, quaint, naive, anachronistic. Maybe that'll be the point, why they'll be the next real rebels. Real rebels, as far as I can see, risk things. Risk disapproval. The old postmodern insurgents risked the gasp and squeal: shock, disgust, outrage, censorship, accusations of socialism, anarchism, nihilism. The new rebels might be the ones willing to risk the yawn, the rolled eyes, the cool smile, the nudged ribs, the parody of gifted ironists, the "How banal." Accusations of sentimentality, melodrama. Credulity. Willingness to be suckered by a world of lurkers and starers who fear gaze and ridicule above imprisonment without law. Who knows.

Why is the Western canon so homoerotic? Is there a relationship between making good art and being able to appreciate the beauty of the male form?
33 replies and 9 images omitted. Click here to view.
>>
>>24793309
There's definitely a link between making good art and being able to appreciate the beauty of human expression, if that's what you mean. Homosexual people were able to push past their fetish and make works of art that became universally cherished and appreciated because, at least in the past, they had the wherewithal and self-control to do so.
Can a world of gooners and gay-gooners pushed into spineless degeneracy by corporations do the same? Probably not.

This is one of the most bizarre recurring opinions I see on /lit/, as though two centuries of archaeology, numismatics, and delving through collections of papyri fragments and engravings hasn’t augmented and enhanced what we know about antiquity in a way you would never be able to glean from some primary source or whatever. Throwing the baby out with the bath water because a few classics grad students wrote shit like “Queering Homer” because there’s no gaps in the literature left for theses made you retarded or something.

The idea that there are no other options is absolute nonsense; there are always other systems to explore. You can absolutely preserve your culture and heritage without moralizing about other races like the radical liberals do, and you certainly don't need any death camps to do it. The same goes for supporting the working man: you can back the worker without resorting to the irrational, out-of-control violence that is Marxism. The fundamental problem with these other systems, whether left or right, is their lack of limits, no real social contract to bind them. That's why liberalism, in my opinion, at least has rules built into its framework; rules I believe it’s tragically forgotten but rules nonetheless. At the end of the day, it's all about trying to keep the peace, and a system that can deliver that is what everyone actually wants.
