The patreon well is dried up. Ain't nobody going to read your story.
>>24686797>The patreon well is dried up.why is the line going up and right on basically every major story?webfic is just getting more popular. only 2 months ago RR had a freak of nature 0->25k overnight success. never before seenif i could buy stocks on RR I very much would, is all im saying
>>24686815Can't help but notice ya'll be talkin about RR when I'm talkin patreon.

>>24686823You say that then you lack sources. Biggest cope.
>>24686823Name any hosting site comparable to rr when nobody here mentions them
>>24686797> The patreon well is dried up.Not true.> Ain't nobody going to read your story.True.
>>24686653>You could read the manga instead if you want. And miss out on bouncing animated titties?Dang now that we're talking about it I kinda want to stop rewatching Index.>Consider the implications of a guy who was seemingly held back to hit on girls he has a strong advantage over by exploiting an advantage he's not aware of himselfThe story has followed the MC for quite some time now so I don't think readers will come to that conclusion.>By that logic she might think that he was abusing his status once she knows, correct?Well she thinks he's lower status than her, he's certainly not as wealthy. The way I'm writing it (or trying to write it) is that she sees him as beneath her, but then it turns out she's actually struggling for the first time in her life and he's really kind and helpful even after she was rude to him. They get to know each other better, and work together for a bit, and then he asks her out on a date; her family sends a chaperone with them. So there shouldn't be any sense of coercion to any of it, but I'll keep an eye out during editing.>However be wary of having the suspension bridge effect resolve all tension, people are more cynical to that these days. Are they really? Damn. Well part of it is that he does in fact save her life, but it's not like she leaps into his arms. I'm going to have her decide he's worth serious consideration for a relationship, and then both their guardians come together to discuss if it's a good match.>I will stress that the MC reacting like that may be a turnoff to readersProbably, but I'm planning a sort of snap back where he loses his composure because he's smitten, and then five minutes later class starts and she looks over to see she's not even on his mind anymore and he's in full work/study mode, and when she asks him a question about the study material he's capable and smooth about it.>This will help explain WHY the MC loves huge tits so much to the readerHe's just never been in that kind of close proximity to such a beautiful, attractive girl before. Big tits are only part of her charm, although they are a big part. >you need to figure out a way to make the tits matter in a narrative contextWell the trouble I was having was in describing them in a way that wouldn't upset RR mods, given the age. So I figured a poetic passage praising her beauty, including her big tits, would work.>but you need to prepare to explain why those breasts initially attracted him at some point. He's a 17 year old male. But also he's never seen a girl his age with breasts that large so they kinda catch him off guard in a big way.I'm partially anchored on her character having large breasts as an attempt to be on the edge. Obviously the safe play would be to have her be 20 years old, emotionally mature, confident, medium unremarkable chest, feminist icon. I could even have her shave the side of her head! But big boob girls need representation too.

>>24686620Holy shit dude that book is creativity poison. You literally don't need that. Not saying it's bad or unhelpful to everyone but damn most people need help with their dialogue tags and maintaining consistent tense, not understanding dramatized vs undramatized narrators and how they influence the telling of a story. You'd be better served re-reading your favorite book and then trying to mimic what that book does.Pic rel is more creativity poison although it's actually really freaking good at helping me learn to use words gooder>>24686659It's not so much that any particular site will make you famous if you post short stories to it; it's that it can't hurt. >>24686891nothingbut webnovel has even more trash tastes and meta than rr, if you can believe it
Any of you guys writing some gay fiction? if so tell me about it and link it
>>24686857Okay, the way you talked about him being from a foreign land threw me off. Now to be brief, the overriding issue most people could have is that he's got a two year age difference over her and he's 17, almost 18, while she's 15. Audiences are weird like that, especially if as you said they've been following him for some time already only to see him go AWOOGA for the first fat tits he's seen in his life.As for tips on how to describe her chest when she's a 15 year old and you're attempting to publish on royalroad which takes an extremely dim view to anime romcom shenanigans in the first place, they don't exist. That's all. Those are your options if you want to keep the current setup: Either avoid mentioning exact ages or be very vague about her chest area. You should really avoid mentioning the age thing. It's not being on the edge, you're throwing yourself into a pit. By the way, I know you were making a facetious comparison but 20 year olds are plenty capable of being busty emotional babies that look and act the same way as a 15 year old. There's no need to change anything except a number. Trust me, I've read a ton of Korean isekai that does it. I've seen college students in real life act like highschoolers. It does make the character more pathetic to still be wailing like teenagers in their twenties but not only is it realistic, you avoid the headache of RR mods coming down on you for age.
>>24686868They share the same footing. If you have a webnovel that doesn't fit into that meta you're screwed
>>24686913>make the character characters*minor spelling mistake.webm
>>24686913>only to see him go AWOOGA for the first fat tits he's seen in his life. That's why I was looking for ways to describe it poetically lol.Unfortunately avoiding ages isn't possible for plot reasons. I could change the age outright, but then I'd have to change a lot of the plot and character arcs.I understand that mods can get twitchy, but this is squarely in the realm of romeo and juliet laws, and there's no sexual contact at all until after marriage (again, when she's eighteen).I guess I'll double check the TOS and rules to see if there's anything explicitly against it.
>>24686960>Sexual exploitation and abuse are prohibited:>1. Pedophilia, or stories involving sexual activities with underage characters or individuals under the age of 18, are prohibited. When there is Sexual Content involving characters, there can be NO indication or implication that the characters are, or appear to be, under the age of 18. Situations in which this may be ambiguous (differing speeds of maturity, altered flows of time, mismatch between age and appearance, etc.) must not include Sexual Content in any form. Even fictional species need to be mature both by the standards of their species AND in human terms.I'm pretty sure I'm in the clear based on I'm intending to be extraordinarily clear they're not banging, not even secretly, not even off screen. But I still want the heroine to have big tits.
>>24686960Fortunately I'm sure you could figure out a way to avoid mentioning ages or making it an issue without disrupting the plot. I say that in the tone of a royalroad moderator. >Romeo and Juliet lawsNow you're sexualizing both minors! But no, really, remember that doesn't apply everywhere.>There's no sexual contact at allThen what is he stammering over? Where is he looking that makes him awkward? You've seen enough Japanese anime about high schoolers to know even they give a reason for it. Without a reason, there's no bite to his reactions.>>24686983Read it very carefully. Sexual Content, in capitals, encompasses a lot more than simply sex. Sex appeal is absolutely a part of "sexual exploitation". It doesn't mean that they'll enforce it that way but you should ask a mod before you commit to this. Sometimes it's better to ask for permission than forgiveness. This is one of those times.
>>24686853There's more than one?
>>24687004My knee-jerk reaction is that a description of a character's beauty in poetic language isn't sexual content but I'll think about this. Even though I'm writing the chapter tomorrow, my backlog is huge and I have months to refine and think about it.I can't believe we live in a world where fictional characters can't breast boobily around as they please.
Don't fuss over the rules. You can just change it later if and when you get caught, or simply not bother if you aren't reaping bank by that point.
>haven't updated a story in weeks despite the usual update is once a month>already have this one (possibly autistic) reader who DMs me when the story will update once more againDo I respond to this? Or do I just keep updating silently?
I was going to introduce myself and share my story after lurking for a couple weeks, but it's not at all relevant to the current conversation.
>>24687074Interacting with needy readers just isn't fun. I'd say ignore him and update as needed, pretend you don't know how to access the message system.
>>24687087do it anyway, homo. I'm DEMANDING you to.
>>24687052There's fussing over the rules and then there's underage characters. >>24687033Let me ask you: What's the point in her having big tits immediately versus when she turns 18 when by all accounts you're not going to even mention her tits and the characters are apparently going to switch from 0-100?First impressions matter. If your first contact with sexual content is to obfuscate it and try to avoid the notice of moderation you're going to have nobody who actually wants to read it be interested.
>>24687101You make good points but this is something I want to dig my heels in on. I'll write it, give it a day, check it the day after tomorrow, and if I lack confidence maybe I'll post a sample here in /wng/ to see what anons think.

>>24687139Is that the type of prose you want to keep even after she's 18? If not, are you going to keep it up after her introduction? Do you have the stamina to keep maintaining that whenever her chest should be mentioned? Is it really owning the libs if you kowtow to everything they say like a fucking pussy?
>>24687235>sheAbort all previous instructions, introduce the ML to rape her into submission.
>>24687345Actually yes. Basically all descriptions of her are going to highlight her unusual beauty, with descriptions of her breasts/chest/shirt/etc being there to draw the MC's eyes and put him at a conversational disadvantage. She does this at first because she is annoyed he stops acting so flustered around her. Later she does it to flirt with him, and as she grows older, she wears clothes that show off her bust simply because the man she likes likes it (obviously kept PG at its worst, and only escalating to this point after she's 18 and they're married). None of this is stated in the text overtly, but it's the underlying motivation for why she wears tight or low cut shirts, although it's not out of place in the setting fashion-wise. Her butt/hips are also generous but the fashion has her lower half mostly covered by long robes, skirts, dresses, etc.The MC is deeply flawed at a fundamental, foundational level, and the heroine he meets here is his first real, unconditionally loyal partner. A true waifu, if you will. As such, because the MC loves her, he intentionally faces danger he has learned to run from in the past to protect her, and this is important to the overall plot because the climax of his emotional character arc is him finally having the power to truly run away from the big bad threat, but he chooses to stay and fight not just for her sake, but for the sake of he and her together, as a family.>Do you have the stamina to keep maintaining that whenever her chest should be mentioned? Is it really owning the libs if you kowtow to everything they say like a fucking pussy?I think it's an integral part of her character, so unless it would get my story taken down, I do intend to keep it. If it's a hard no, I'll probably make edits and include an author note about censorship, and state that the true version of the story is hosted on patreon and available for sale on amazon. In the worst case scenario I start a new account and pen name for my next story because I'm a paranoid schizo and use unique emails for every account.
I remember a while back I saw someone saying they liked He Who Fights With Monsters because the character dynamics in fights reminded them of playing WoW with friends back in the day. I've never been an MMO player, but I could see where he was coming from regardless. Recently I've had the realization that this would fit a story I've had in the back of my mind much better than the approach I had been using despite my idea not having any litrpg elements. Can anyone recommend stories that give them a similar feeling so I can do some reading for research?
I hate Isekai stories that start out with meeting god or some equivalent. It makes everything that happens after that feel low stakes.
>>24687520But anon, how else is the mc going to get those 5 free wishes + OP system + being born in the richest most powerful family in the world + the biggest dick in the realm?
>>24687520>>24687538I agree, and he should just realize he has a cheat skill. There can be a scene where it activates due to a pressing need, or he can simply realize he has a power. Absolutely zero need to have a justification for how he got it.

>>24687520I hate that in all media, removes all the stakes. I never make gods real in my worlds, just as in real life. I saw a cringy youtube video yesterday from a christcuck or similarly tarded individual who critisized religion in fantasy that it wasn't real blabla. Yeah no shit, the last thing you want to read about is christcucks in fantasy, it's enough seeing it shoehorned in in american movies and tv shows.
>>24687587cope
>>24687596Shalom rabbi
>>24687587I'm the original complainer. My standards aren't that high. I just think that certain tropes, like meeting gods at the start of the story, make the rest of the story feel like there are no stakes. If you're going to want a character to meet a god, but keep the stakes then it has to be something like in Cultist of Cerebron. The MC meets a god (eventually), but he's clearly deferential. The god doesn't explain everything and the MC feels like he's in danger just by interacting with the god.>He Who Fights MonstersAnother example that works well. MC got isekai'd and there was no exposition dump on how it happened. MC had to figure it out himself. >Death MarchThe anime was garbage though.>Max lvl archmage >Jackal Among Snakes>Arcane Emperor>Descend>Black Iron's Glory>Destroyermen>>24687596I actually watched that video a few days ago. I thought it was interesting because later in the video he talks about how you could make religion appear more interesting in a story. I don't find that particularly important, but maybe someone does.

>>24688046Romance is a very small part of the story and very little is explicit, but what romance it has is very off-putting for a lot of people. Some people don't like the monster guy/girl fucking, some people don't like the massive age gaps in a lot of the romances, proper age gaps too, none of those 70 year old Elven teenagers. I thought Japanese and Chinese WN's desensitized me to a lot of that, but even I was put off when 90 year old Granny El started robbing the cradle. And then, the fated moment arrived.Escorted by a maid, [heroine] crossed the threshold and entered the classroom.[MC] was struck dumb, and his mouth fell open.Glossy black hair cascaded in waves past her shoulders, framing the porcelain skin of her face, neck, and collarbone. Onyx jewels sparkled in place of her eyes, decorating either side of her delicate snub nose. A slight jawline and full, pouty lips set between slightly round cheeks gave her a lingering cuteness even as she was clearly growing into a gorgeous young woman. She was petite, half a head shorter than the maid next to her, and she wore a loose off-white blouse with short puff sleeves and a low neckline and a long, ruffled dark-grey skirt ending just above her ankles. Her small feet were clad in eye-catchingly shiny, polished black leather loafers. Her clothing, though loose, couldn’t hide her generous curves, a body type that [MC] had never seen in his home village before. She was the most beautiful woman [MC] had ever seen, and from that moment on, he never had eyes for any woman but her.As [MC] could do nothing but stare, rooted to the spot, she cocked her hip and placed a hand on it and sighed loudly—revealing sparkling, perfectly white teeth between her rose-pink lips.“Ugh, there’s no more seats left!” She turned her gaze onto the Smith, narrowing her eyes and producing the slightest furrow in her brow.“You there, foreigner. Give me your seat.”How does this read as an introductory description?
>>24688407The arrogant noble and cool black-haired beauty can't be the same character. It's a conflict of aesthetic conventions.
>>246884075/10 writing. classic self-insert isekai trash. MC is already simping hard before she even opens her mouth. reads like a teenage fantasy where the perfect girl demands a seat and the MC turns into a drooling retard. typical light novel garbage that screams "written by someone who's never touched grass."
>>24686853No, that's me. Still hard at work on the keyboard grind.>>24687018If there is I would love to hear them.
>>24688413Why not? She's immature, and the narrator is biased. >>24688438I'm trying to portray a love at first sight moment, while contrasting the heroine's physical beauty and emotional immaturity. She's about to turn 15 which is a big deal setting and plot-wise, while the MC is 17.Here's what follows:The maid next to her frowned more overtly.“Mistress, that is most inappropriate.”[Heroine] turned to the maid, her skirt and hair continuing the motion in a swirl that captivated [MC].“You can’t expect me to sit in the back row, can you?” she pouted.[MC] belatedly realized she was talking about him—had called him foreigner—and he came to a conclusion. He stood, loudly scraping the chair back in the same motion. As he did, he realized that [heroine] barely stood as tall as his shoulder.Chivalrously, he assumed that she needed a front-row seat for the class. Otherwise, given her height, she wouldn’t be able to see the blackboard.“It’s, it’s ah, I mean, yeah, it’s no problem, uh, probably hard to, er, see. It’s fine, take, uh, feel free to take the seat,” he said eloquently as he yielded his desk, blushing furiously. He quickly swept up his things and moved them to the seat just behind, in the empty second row.The maid and [female side character] spoke at the same time.“Young master, that’s—”“[MC], you don’t have to—”But they were both interrupted by [heroine].“Good!” she declared. “I shall grant you the privilege of my name: I am [heroine] of the [Redacted] Family.” Her eyes swept over the other students. “You may all call me [heroine].”[Female side character] frowned. [Male side character 1] looked confused. [Male side character 2], of all of them, took it the most in stride.“My name is [MSC2], please call me [MSC2]. I don’t like nicknames.”And with that, [heroine] took the desk [MC] had yielded, flounced down into the chair, and flipped her hair with her hand, causing it to fall down her back like a waterfall and revealing the slender nape of her neck. And the name [heroine] was inscribed on [MC]’s heart forever.
>>24688438>classic self-insert isekai trash>reads like a teenage fantasy>typical light novel garbageOn second thought I'm taking this post as a massive compliment. My slop will fit right in.
>>246884624/10 writing. pure self-insert fantasy cringe. MC's a total cuck, blushing and stammering like a middle school simp. the whole "I shall grant you the privilege of my name" line is peak cringe. you are desperately trying to make her look mysterious and cool, but it reads like a bad fanfic. MC's already simping so hard he's inscribed her name in his heart after ONE interaction. needs less hair-flipping and more actual character development.
>>24688438>5/10>half of tenSo you actually liked it?
>>24688471no, but I also didn't dislike it either.
>>24688469>needs less hair-flipping and more actual character development. Here's a part from the prior chapter, which is actually heroine's first appearance in the story. She's talking to an elder of the Guild who's pretending to be a doorman to take the measure of new students given this is the first day of class. She doesn't know who he is.Basically this is the start of heroine's arc, and she gets a lot of character development from now on which reflects the developments MC already went through and his own mistakes. It was nearly one o’clock when the final expected student arrived. There was an odd air about her, [Elder] felt. Polite, but it felt forced, like she was used to being superior and unsure how to handle being in the inferior social position. Still, effort made up for her lack of grace. She took the rod, and it lit up entirely, though dimly. There was some sign of training, though not much, but her total mana pool was the second largest he’d seen this morning. She thrust out her chest proudly and stood tall as she could as she made the rod light up. Her dark, nearly black eyes sparkled innocently, and she tossed her long, glossy black hair back as she preened.Ah, that was it, [Elder] thought to himself.“Child,” he said gently, “have you not [turned 15] yet?”“No, not yet, sir,” she answered. “But it’s only twelve days away. I’ll be able to finish the course,” she assured him.“Hmmm,” [Elder] rubbed his chin as he looked down at the short young girl. “And you’re certain you want to be an [title]?”“Yes!—sir,” she hastened to add. “I’m going to establish my own workshop under my father’s company.” She gave her father’s name, and [Elder] nodded in recognition. The [Redacted] family ran the largest trading company in [country], with branches in every large city and most of the towns. Their family head, this girl’s father, was a single-generation baronet, as his father had been before him, and his father before him; their contributions to the Kingdom merited promotion to the nobility in each generation, but they lacked the accomplishments for promotion to hereditary nobility and the social connections to marry into a noble family. Still, they weren’t a family to be trifled with, not when they controlled such large shares of so many markets and industries.“I see. Yes, the [Redacted] Trading Company has been a valued business partner of the [guild] for many years. Do give your father [title] [Elder]’s regards.”The girl nodded, and [Elder] beckoned one of the maids over from the back wall. “Please escort Mistress [heroine] up to the classroom for the basic course.”He watched the girl as she went, striding confidently behind the maid. It was unusual to have an [not 15] child take the course, but not as much as having a Knight’s foreign retainer. He began to regret passing on the opportunity to teach this season’s basic course.
>>24688469> the whole "I shall grant you the privilege of my name" line is peak cringe.Mwah.>MC's already simping so hard he's inscribed her name in his heart after ONE interaction. They are fated lovers who are held up forever after as the ideal romantic relationship. The narrator has to ship them and hype them up, even though he tries to portray things realistically: hence the narration not exactly lining up with the dialogue. MC is seeing the world through heroine-tinted glasses from now on. He's fallen in love.
>>246884796/10 at best. massive worldbuilding info dump that reads like a wikipedia entry on a fictional trading family. you're trying way too hard to establish backstory through exposition instead of letting it naturally unfold.the entire passage screams "look how clever I am at creating complex social hierarchies" without actually making it interesting. elder's internal monologue is wooden. the girl comes across as a walking trope.the mana rod scene is painfully contrived. the forced politeness, the carefully explained family background, the not quite 15 detail, it all feels like the author is setting up some weird pedo wish fulfillment narrative.the elder's perspective is about as exciting as watching paint dry. his internal observations are bland, his dialogue is perfunctory

>>24688552>It never occurred to you to edit and try to make it better before shitting out a whole trilogy?I'll answer seriously:1. No2. I had no idea that the narrative structure issues I have in this story would be such a problem. For all the reading I've done, this writing business is more complicated than I expected.3. I'm specifically writing my simplest, least-emotionally-attached story first to get rapid feedback from RR readers. This is going really well and I'm learning a ton very quickly while building an initial fanbase that I can point towards future, better releases.4. I didn't expect this to be a trilogy, but pacing issues led to the amount of words I have. So I split the story into three volumes. The second volume in particular is the worst with these issues, and I'm afraid it'll need a heavy rewrite before I put together an ebook and manuscript for amazon.

I believe the following stories start with the MC meeting god before getting isekai'dDidn't I Say to Make My Abilities Average?!I Shall Survive Using Potions! In Another World With My SmartphoneThe World's Finest Assassin Gets Reincarnated In Another World as an AristocratMaybe also The Great Cleric. I know he gets to choose his magic and a minor cheat at the start when reincarnating. As for whether or not this lowers stakes, almost universally in these stories after meeting the god and getting the cheat, the god refuses to get involved in the world anymore, so the MC is on their own to solve their own problems. Potions is an exception but divine intervention is played for laughs rather than used to actually solve any problems, and the cheat in Potions is so busted that stakes are generally low anyway: it's more in the "cozy fantasy" subgenre.

Can I make a webnovel out of 250-word chapters, or will that enrage the poor cuckies who want their slop by the yard?
because you have shitty taste
>copecopecopecopemindbroken
>>24689408at one point I was tempted to make a webnovel entirely out of chapters consisting of royal road's minimum character length just to see how annoying I could be.
>>24689402Just read more.>>24689408Yes, and not only can you, but you should. Cram an entire chapter's worth of material into 250 words and end each one on a massive hook or cliffhanger.
>>24689411What is their minimum?
>>24689408You can make a webnovel out of 1 word babe, ain't nobody caring.
>>24689421Don't have a cow. I was only asking.
>>24689433No you really can make a webnovel out of one word
>>24689435And that word?bababadalgharaghtakamminarronnkonnbronntonnerronntuonnthunntrovarrhounawnskawntoohoohoordenenthurnuk!
>>24689402They don't need to be well written. Quality takes time and that goes against the entire premise of webnovels.
>>24689451I don't think it's necessary true. It's why there's such an emphasis on taking your time and writing the backlog. In other words, the entire story, then you serialize it. Those who don't are more bound to burn out and never finish the story.
>>24689451So how many words would you say you clock up in a day's writing?
>>24689461>It's why there's such an emphasis on taking your time and writing the backlog.most big authors don't even write with a backlog lol. which ones do?
>>24689484Me :)
>>24689461I really think that's not necessary. As long as you stick to a schedule that's half of your output (eg, if you can write two chapters a week, post one per week), you can start posting immediately. There are things you can do to get a better chance of hitting Rising Stars, but if you just want to write and have some readers you'll eventually get there just by posting chapters regularly. If you're going to write the entire thing ahead of time, you have two problems:1. Why serialize? Just self-pub outright.2. If you start serializing and readers discover a problem with your story (seen it happen many times), there's nothing the author can really do at that point without last minute rewrites that don't jive with the initial vision.Managing burnout is a different kind of issue: some people just don't have the free time in their life or the mental bandwidth to write a story on top of video games, anime, netflix, gacha games, a part time job, community college classes, and mom yelling at them to do household chores. It's hard. One has to know when they have the mental energy to write a webnovel, or if they need to just get that extra hour of sleep.
>>24689418500 characters. My plan was to make the story out of 50-100 word chunks and schedule them to be uploaded once every half hour for a month. An endless stream of absolute dogshit to abuse the system.
>>24689507That's fucking amazing. Please do. I want to see if it's meta breaking and makes it so you don't need ads.
This guy does not want to answer my question about how many daily words he writes. Is it a status thing?
More than you
Anybody else having a really fun time with writing lately?
Somebody's in a snit because their talent, such as it is, has failed them.
>>24689571I was. I had worked my way up to 2k/day, then started doing nearly 3k. So I forced myself yesterday and today to write until I hit 4k but I drank too much caffeine today and my eyes have felt like there's sand in them for hours. I've decided to skip the gym and take a half-sick day now. That said I got 2 full chapters written both days and the feedback I got from my beta readers was roughly what I was looking for, so yeah overall pretty good. Just need to do a little more outlining work once my eyes stop hurting.
>>24689585thats fantastic!
>>24689585>the ol' sand eyesah yeah that'll do itI've been painfully trying to work back up to a mere consistent 1k/day
>>24689498But how do you know how much output you can handle?First, by writing in advance, i.e. establishing a backlog.>2. If you start serializing and readers discover a problem with your story (seen it happen many times), there's nothing the author can really do at that point without last minute rewrites that don't jive with the initial vision. This hits much harder when you DON'T have a backlog. I can say firsthand that trying to serialize and having that happen crippled my motivation to continue.
>>24689259>I immediately ignore anything with a cover as generic as these.Jokes on you. Don't use their stock art. You upload your own picture at your own width and height. You're just using their zillions of cool font and stuff at that point.
>>24689628It's actually not the art. It's the layout and fonts.
>>24689507Hold on. What was your plan for it, 50-100 word chapters or 50-100 word parts of a single chapter?
>>24689571I got 700 words for a first rough draft of the first chapterIts shitThe idea its that i write an outline of events and dialogue so i have an idea of what its going to happen, like a squeleton chapter, then rewrite it to flesh it out and polish itIs this the right way to do it? I think its literally twice the effort for half the results but its my first time writing anything, if i try to write everything in one sitting i get stuck hard and get nothing done for the day, am i making a mistake? Is this a bad habit i should stop now before it becomes a problem?
>>24689641Allow yourself to write badly, and just keep writing forward. Try to get five bad chapters written before you go back to rewrite.Maybe it won't work for you but treat it as an experiment.
>>24689571I suffered an intense moment of self doubt about my measly outline telling me I have no idea how to write anything cool so me saying something cool is meant to happen in a scene has me thinking bullshit I won't be able to make it so I'm crying
>>24689641i think it depends a lot on your style. f. scott fitzgerald famously rewrote over and over and some people just do it all in one meth bender. just try to make progress in an efficient way and i think you'll be open to change with the right mindset.>>24689647mhm. i definitely feel you on that lol. sometimes im trying to write a passage about characters and then i reread it and im like damn i thought i cooked but this is mediocre then have to rewrite again and again to get it the way i can leave behind. i think you can do it. if you have it in your outline then your imagination is already cool. you just have to connect that vibrancy to your tongue
>Have outline ready>Start writing>Stop a few hours later>300-500 wordsHow do I just write and not give a fuck about what I have till editing? It feels like there's another me that forces me to think of the stuff that doesn't matter at the moment instead of just getting it out onto the screen.
>>24689645>Allow yourself to write badly, and just keep writing forward. Try to get five bad chapters written before you go back to rewrite.>Maybe it won't work for you but treat it as an experiment.my first novel attempt was a hot mess and that' s being charitable. I doubt anyone's first five books are worth a flying fuck probably. You got to write several bad books to get them out of the way.
>>24689634>It's actually not the art. It's the layout and fonts.is it the best commercial state of the art solution for cover art. I doubt it. But for free you'd be amazed that you can get mediocrity right now while you plan for the good stuff later. PIC related.
>>24689715I'm an amateur in graphic design and I'd prefer learning to develop a new skill.
>>24689498Self-pubbing is tempting, but it feels wrong and so does stubbing. What I write has no market value and there's no real scene for it for wns. It's tough.
>>24689676try the bot sprintoi find 20mins works well for me to force me to just write
>>24689715Ideogram AI can generate cover art and unique titles for free and is pretty good.
>>24689791The bot sprinto?
>>24689709>my first novel attempt was a hot mess and that' s being charitable. What was your first novel about, anon?
>>24689795nta but it's a discord bot where you "race" for X minutes. it's more of a social activity where you "sprint" with other writers than something you do solo but if it works for the other anon good for him
>>24689818I thought discord for was... those types.
>>24689676300-500 words is a lot. Bear in mind that's equilvent to about 2 physical pages. Don't push youreself than what you're capable of. Absolutely nothing wrong with sub1k chapters either I have a few sub1k chapters in my fic.
>see someone ask for a xianxia recommendation>recommend Regressor's Tale since it fits their criteria>someone shows up sperging out about how Regressor's Tale is dogshit>look at their profile>Reverend Insanity fanboyevery. single. time.
>>24689794for demonstration purposes, one of the results I got when I asked it for a title a while ago (I ended up doing the typesetting myself but the titles it generated were not bad)
>>24689884>Regressor's TaleRegressor's Tale was REALLY good the first few "Lives", before the second save point, after that the story starts to slowly lose its fucking mind and becomes schizo babble and cultivation terms, i think i dropped it after the thunder-body guy went insane after his lover died or when the Dragon schizo got giga-cursed by his pretend lover
>>24689938that part is a bit of a rough patch but it gets really good with Seo Li and the Wuji Religious OrderI agree somewhat that it gets pretty deep in the weeds of cultivation terminology and mysticism but I also went on a deep dive and now fully believe that the system makes perfect complete sense so take that with a mountain of salt (haha hehe hoho)
>>24689833Public discords are. But it's just the common messaging platform these days. Each server has its own culture, especially the more niche and private it is.
Holy shit i thought RR rising stars was already half full of carbon copy xianxia crap but now its now full of 85.7% of non-human female mc crap.>I really need a new site to find my weebnovel fix
>>24689884But it is dogshit.
>>24689995Its a dangerous precedent if you ask me, especially since it worked so wellI don't want to get used to having the rising stars be crowded by the same people making the same story premise
Hello anons. Could I get feedback on my non-human female mc crap? The chapter I'm posting is a small story about how MC came into existence and I'm worried not introducing them for 2k words might turn off viewers. Is this chapter entertaining enough to justify that approach or should i just scrap it? https://pastebin.com/PAZVxWWH
>>24690026The general sentiment in the Order is that this stunt is not really replicable and I'm inclined to agree
>>24689995>>24690026Now that i think about it, are any of the stories good? I hate them automatically since its all "female protagonist" so i didn't read any of them
>>24688522>It's even litrpg and I barely have any number go up.You're a braver anon than I, I wrote a 400k litrpg where numbers never went up and I deleted it in shame.
>>24689507>744 hours in a 31 day month>1488 half hours
>>24690026>especially since it worked so wellIt seems to have done rather badly? Several big authors participated and it was maybe their worst performing stories yetSure, it generated buzz in reddit and discord servers and shit, but who cares? Low followers, low patreon conversion, bad performance by authors with proven track records
>>24690029elf isn't really considered non-human btw. the rr non-human tag is really meant as non-humanoid
Every man has felt this before
>>24689507I attempted a less extreme version of this with 500 word chunks. Didn't go over well. 1k is the realistic minimum.
Any good xianxia besides Memories of the fall?
>>24690101cradle
>>24690042It's just step one of my master plan1. Write a bad first book (series)2. Leave it up to collect long-tail energy drink money for the rest of my life3. Write a much better second story, follow precepts, achieve mid-level success4. Try the stubbing to KU pipeline5. Rinse and repeat with 6-8 more story ideas until I find something that works and I can tie my author brand to a genre6. Write within a niche with a defined market7. None of this really matters because I secretly already retired I just don't want to admit to people I know IRL that I have money (I'm afraid they'll try to steal it)8. As far as they know I'm already successful enough to cover daily expenses, next year I'll tell them rent is covered, year after I'll allow myself to buy a newish carObviously not everyone can do this but I still think steps 1-6 are valid.
>>2468963950-100 words uploaded as a chapter. The more realistic chapter breaks would happen as usual. Basically just telling a story a paragraph at a time.
>>24690143>make book>release>make some money, end up drawing in a small bit of money monthly from persisting sales>repeat ad nauseam>eventually make enough to live onthis is genuinely how it used to be and to some degree still is for working authors
>>24690149It's even better now because 300 people anywhere in the world willing to toss you $10/mo to read what you write is enough for a comfy lower class income. Back in the day you had to get a publisher to buy your work and you'd be stuck where they marketed it and people would literally pirate your shit and sell it elsewhere under a made up author's name anyway. I dislike patreon taking a fee and all but it really does provide a good service (why the fuck ethereum doesn't allow recurring payments system like patreon with smartcontracts, I would say I don't know but I do, it just sucks).
>decide to have a side character quote Dracula Flow>ask grok to find me a transcript and extract the mentions of guns>it gets stuck in a Rick Owens Thong Loop I wish I could make this shit up
do you think a plot structure of:>MC visits place to collect odd curios/specimens>His search/strategy usually uncovers either a conspiracy or inadvertently riles up the locals>MC tries to ignore the increasing tension while searching for his items of interest, used to increase the number of tools he can use (as a form of progression)>Climax usually either ends with the MC causing a major incident or getting chased out of town>Goes to the next area>RepeatsBe a good one for a long term serial?
>>24690201It sounds great to me, which probably means it's too against the meta to work.
>>24690201It's a good structure but you need a hook. Thinking of Just Add Mana, the hook is the mystery about the main character, and then he gets in enough shenanigans rapidly enough that the story remains compelling even though he's not actually really pursuing any goals, and it's all just worldbuidling wank.
i quit WNs months ago, but i'm still checking in for something to inspire me. for (you)r story
>>24690238i read both trad pub and web pub and idk it's been a while since i found a trad novel that i really loved, but i find web novels i enjoy stillmaybe i've just become one with the trash. trad pub is so boring
>>24690243there's a reason it's on the way out
>>24690243trad pub is virtually infinite for what it can provoke in someone.a WN is basically just a template
>>24690243Sixteen Ways to Defend a Walled City was pretty fun, and so was the sequel. I didn't realize a third book had come out so I'll probably read that soonish.Every now and then I'll go to B&N since it's the only bookstore around and just look at everything in the scifi/fantasy section (and the manga LN in case I missed something new coming out)
>>24690248(we're) talking about the content, not the means of publication. anon was basically just referring to literature as "trad pub"; unless you thought he was bored because of the way the content was published
>>24688489>>24688479I think it's fine as long as it's not at the start. If the reader is already invested in the story then this is fine.
>>24690248Its going out because trad pubs are lazy and poor. You won't get any support unless your name is Sally Rooney.
>>24690218I'm now the guy you're replying to, but do you think an Isekai itself could be enough of a hook? What would it take for it to be enough? Crazy world? Likeable (and not boring) protagonist?I've been mulling over a story. MC isekais and gets a fetch quest from the start, but I'm not sure if this is enough of a hook.
>>24690277many WNs let the tropes do all the heavy lifting. the author basically just provides an excuse to demonstrate and explore their progression systems. not all, but you can get away w/ anything. so long as you do the bare minimum to signal what the reader is in for (and deliver on it)
>>24690248the reason is they literally don't want white men
>>24690218>read Just Add Mana>snark and immediate, clumsily executed plot>can no longer stomach reading any further>dropi can see where the hook would be for a majority of readers, despite my immense and instantaneous distaste for Just Add Mana after reading the first chapter.

>>24690306The point about all the powerful people agreeing to always protect kids just took me out of the story. That's such a weird thing to come into agreement over when looking at a multiverse. A guy that ended universes feels guilt about some random kid that they had only moments ago became aware of? Species don't work like that. All the side characters getting some kind of freakshow turned me off further.

>>24689995>>I really need a new site to find my weebnovel fixI feel the same way. Scribblehub is interesting, but so many stories there end up dropped or they're porn. Although that does remind me of RR from a decade ago.

>>24690294I'm trying to think of stories where I got hooked in. I think it's always been a mystery element for me. The "how did this happen? What's going on?" thing. The stories that I bore me at the start are the ones that give me lengthy explanations for it.I liked Project Hail Mary and it started with a mystery about what is going on. The harem fantasy novel that I'm reading right now hooked me in with a similar mystery. Max level archmage has such a mystery at the start too, He Who Fights With Monsters as well. That sucks. I wanted to make my MC deliberately choose to go to another world. No mystery there.

It's an outline of an outline; things happen, we don't get enough descriptions, then other things happen. Too much telling and no showing. Now, I've written a short story, and it may be tempting to forgo details in order to get a plot moving, but I think that's backwards, pick a simple, direct plot and go there, no meandering, but also no rushing. My suggestion is: focus on the MC character, tell things from her perspective, especially for how alien humans are to her, that was the strongest point in what you've written. Give characters dialogue and focus on a direct storyline; elf finds strange doll in a store, what happens from there? Could be interesting.
>>246909691.4k chapters are fine. Great, even. 3k words are a slog to read through for fun, you want to split a 3k word chapter up into 1.5k word chapters, if anything.

>>24691346I dont even go on /a/ except occasionally to look at the plastic butts thread. I prefer novels over anime/manga. Unlike you who appear to have barely read any isekai WNs or maybe only those with anime adaptations. And none that are "too old".
>>24691344I can't read translated prose unfortunately. It's just too grating, I've tried multiple times. It's the dialogue in particular I think, my favorite part of stories is how characters interact with each other and when the dialogue sounds stilted as fuck I literally can't enjoy the rest of the story no matter how goodSince you responded to my post about chapter word counts, I'm assuming you read on Webnovel.com or something, where I think chapters are smaller, so you have me there. So it depends on where that anon is posting and what his target audience is. Most people here write for royalroad, I haven't run into a webnovel.com writer
>>24691349why are you quoting yourself?
>>24691350>I dont even go on /a/but anon your tourist friends say the same unfounded shit there>Unlike you who appear to have barely read any isekai WNs or maybe only those with anime adaptationsprojecting again because you're unable to name any besides the most rushed shit quickly abandoned >none that are "too old".you were already told off for this yesterday and today retardbro
>>24691360>n-no u
>>24691371>but anon your tourist friends say the same unfounded shit therewell there ARE some people who actually read and discuss LNs on /a/. there's a reason /lit/ has a rule against them
>>24691371>the most rushed shit quickly abandonedThis is 90% of isekai webnovels. They are literally amateur writing posted online for free as a hobby.
>>24691382still can't name anything huh
>>24691384>>24691385
>>24691385They'd be too old for you zoomerbro. And you wouldn't recognize them since they weren't on TV. I am gatekeeping you. If you dont read enough WNs to list your own examples you don't deserve to be spoonfed.
>>24691393so you don't have to prove a claim you make, what a story little zoomie maybe you should scroll back up here >>24688851 since you never got over it
>>24691403p.s. read the post chain
>>24691403>so you don't have to prove a claim you makeYou have offered 0 proof you've read a single isekai webnovel. I won't take you seriously until I see reviews + analysis posted for at least 3 real WNs with no anime/manga adaptation. Bonus points if they don't have an LN adaptation either, or didn't at the time of reading.Otherwise you remain an /a/ tourist arguing about manga on /lit/ for no reason
>>24691403>since you never got over itLol that second >> is (me) not whoever you're arguing with now. I gave up on you a while ago you obnoxious cunt
>>24691413It's understandable that an anon without even the IQ to read TLd webnovels in 4th grade level english without pictures attached also can't read imageboard posts.
>>24689884Man I can't the korean names + translation filter me too hard
>>24691417no shit im not reading your infinite spergout, retard

>reply chain that goes on and on>it's just one guy on a sperg outstop being retarded and replying to himthis thread has like 3 on-site schizos that regularly have melties. how are you not inoculated to pointless argument
>>24690393yes but the book isn't very long ... also she started being a whore after her dream, and also it's not like everyone is interested in her. I bet she would fuck all the elves if she wasn't already in a "relationship" with one of them.It was just odd. Pre-dream she didn't really think about that, she has a dream where she has a manwhore and a slut attending her and suddenly she starts fantasizing about fucking everyone. Odd.

are reader posts or writer posts more likely to result in thread destruction
>>24691474the one who complains how literally 0 excerpts posted to this thread can punctuate their dialogue correctly. it's been a while since i had a meltie about it, mostly i just point it out and sometimes people get mad because "that's not useful feedback" which hurts my soul because you should get the basics right before posting for critique. sometimes we bicker about it and fling some shit but it never really turns into full melties like what's happening with isekaifag
>>24691484"Thanks."*Holsters gun and walks into the night*
>>24690034So far as I've read, yes.Magpie, Fish, and Puppy are all well worth reading.Phoenix I disliked, but if you're a fan of bloodthirsty cultivator MCs, it's probably decent.
>>24690306I really didn't think I'd like it at first, but I got sucked in rapidly enough and the main character is likable enough that I followed it. I'm a few chapters behind now with no real impulse to read as soon as I can, but it's a good timekiller. It is EXTRAORDINARILY r****t, however, and the MC is a ripoff of Dr. Who. I guess the main thing that has me hooked now is the conflict with the Red Hunters, especially given that Leo's parents joined them and they're trying to kill off the unusual mages.
