Fall of Hyperion is just as good if not better. Endymion books are pretty solid, maybe not quite on the same level as the first two but overall worth reading. Rise of Endymion does have a pretty bloated mid section but the ending pays off.

You ever go to goodreads to look at reviews of a book you liked, but didn't love, searching for people who had the same issues that you did, only to find people who disliked it for the dumbest reasons imaginable?
>"the prose, story, and worldbuilding were all amazing! but my goodness the way the women are written are…YIKES!"

I DNF'd Empire of the Vampire because of some cringiness and the fact that his brand of grimdark didn't agree with me, but I go to goodreads and this chick is screaming about how sexist it is.

I just finished Dune: Messiah and I go there expecting people to talk about how Herbert's whole "Paul bad" message would have hit harder if we got to see the perspective of the people he were oppressing, but instead there's someone whining about the role of women in the story. Nevermind the fact that Alia and whatever the hell was going on with Hayt was arguably more interesting than Paul's brooding sleepwalk into tragedy. They're upset that herbert had a scene of her training naked and falling for a philosophizing womanizer famed for his skill with a sword. I agree that Chani didn't do much, but that's not what brought the book down for me.

>Kristoff promised us gay shit, and while I won’t go into specifics, it was just more f/f fetishization. When a (and I am making an assumption here!!!) “straight” male author frequently writes queer women and queer f/f sex scenes (i.e. The Nevernight Chronicles), I find it disgustingly male gaze-y. I shouldn’t even say “women,” because every gay female he writes is a teenager!!!!!!!! What we have here in Empire of the Vampire is gratuitous hetero male fantasy posturing in the guise of fantasy literature. NEARLY ALL** of the male characters are so offensively… STRAIGHT! The effeminate vampire is painted in a borderline homophobic way, all the jokes in the book are straight boy macho bullshit, and the author also makes it a point to mention in his world building how “sodomy is a sin.” There are slurs galore within this book, but Kristoff also uses a few gay jabs, as well. I thought that once—JUST ONE FUCKING TIME—Jay Kristoff would give us a queer male MC.

Why, despite all the fantasy in the world available to authors, do so many stories revert to swordfights and other medieval tropes?
>>
>>25159801
I'm having this debate with myself right now. My initial idea was to write a fantasy in the 19th century, but then I tried to remember famous victorian fantasies and not a lot came to mind (Prime's Carnival Row was the only one actually), so now I think it might be best to go back to swords and armor. It might be just a preference of the audience really, since at the end of the day we want people to read our stuff and, most importantly, buy it.
>>
>>25159808
Make them fight by sending out battle crows or something. Idk, why have swords if you have all the powers in the world at your disposal. But thats just my opinon.
>>
>>25159829
Because it's not interesting, I think. And I'm speaking from the lens of commercial writing, mind you. If you're a literary author and have the skill and will to create this and no attachment to the financial gain, yeah sure let's go ahead. But I want my stuff to be popular so it has to have some degree of familiarity to the guy (or girl) who lays on his bed at night after a tiring day and spreads open a book to do some light reading. I imagine if I go on and have the wizards fight with esoteric quantum physics pulled out of the String Theory, the reader at one point will start to skin pages. Basically, I want to answer, why isn't Victorian fantasy popular?
>>
>>25159840
The raven example was, of course, a mere prompt. Add something to just swords. Doesnt have to be overcomplicated, thats not what I am getting at, just somewhat original and worthy of the word fantasy.
>>
>>25159883
So were the wizards. Maybe we need balance. Not too out there as to clash with the base setting, but not too simple as to not be fantasy. Maybe that's why swords and knights so so well with magic, because it's a perfect time for the esoteric and mystical, while victorian doesn't go well because it's a time where people were already reaching for the Enlightenment of science and technology.

What is the deal with this book? I always see people talking about how the book is a cautionary tale against messianic figures or charismatic leaders. But it's not like Paul is some sort of opportunistic charlatan, he's clearly something more than a man. Are his followers not justified in following him after seeing his powers?
>>
>>25162720
The book failed on that message, I think. It wanted to deliver that but the truth is that he Golden Path saves humanity at the end. 'Was it worth it?' We can ask, but the books never asks it.
>>
When writing fantasy do you sometimes get the feeling your story is a simple D&D campaign? If you do, what do you do to change that?
>>
>>25162672
Supremely comfy.
From a literary standpoint, the first book is the best, but it's hard not to read the entire series once you start. It's all worth a read, even the second cycle.
None of it is high literature but it's never bad either. Just well executed, fun fantasy by a competent writer. Has some cool unique ideas and plenty of memorable characters.
>>
>>25162749
if you think your writing is too simple/not to your liking than don't write. If you like a simple d&d campaign then do it. to change is to not write in the first place.
>>
>>25157762
Abercrombie is much more interesting, personally couldn't get into Sanderson at all
He writes characters very well, think GRRM but if the different focal characters actually gave you a sense that their own perspective was coloring the narration. The personalities emerge pretty vividly.

Start with The Blade Itself, you'll figure out quickly if it's the sort of thing you want to read more of.
>>
>>25163843
The POV portrayal in ASOIAF is extremely biased, what are you talking about? This is why you have so many Tyrion and Dany diehards for example, because both characters are masters of self-pity and excuses and you don’t really see it until the reread.
>>
>>25162720
It's really just a story about a guy who gets roped into doing what must be done until he can't handle the cost of it any more. There is never any ambiguity in the matter. He must fight the Harkonnen or perish, and then he must become the messiah or humanity will perish. The Golden Path is clear.
>>
>>25164033
The Golden Path didn't seem to really matter by the end of Chapterhouse. It's not all that different than The Lord Ruler's plan in Mistborn, or the circumstances of Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. The Golden Path is basically an extension of the Butlerian Jihad.

I just finished the first draft of my sci-fi book. It is 668 pages long. I'm gonna have to trim it down majorly in the editing process, hopefully without losing too much of what makes it work. Because Lord knows a publisher is not taking a chance on a first time author if the book is that large.

I think it's very good, it's just got a lot of fat, and some structural problems that need work. Easier to do now that I'm done, and I know what to foreshadow and what to cut out completely.

A lot of work ahead of me, bros.

I just finished Wind and Truth and I'm speechless.

I honestly cannot think of a single series I've read where the new book was worst than the previous somehow; and yet:
Way of Kings >= Words of Radiance >>>>>> Oathbringer >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Rhythm of War >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Wind and Truth.

I actually enjoyed the first two books. What happend to him? Did he start enjoying the smell of his own farts?
>>
>>25165094
People who only read Stormlight and only read them after most were released will use the editor excuse.
>>
>>25165094
Joke's on you for not dropping the Series after Oathbringer. I'll admit I gave Rhythm of War a chance, but couldn't finish it. His characters are badly written and they have zero agency. He doesn't write organically and has an obsession with his Outlines even if they clash directly with a character's personality or arc.
>>
>>25165094
I haven't been able to make myself start WaT yet since I finished RoW a year or two ago because I hated it so much. Barely even recognize series compared to the first two books nowadays, him deciding to make Stormlight be a big convergence of his cosmere shit annoys me to no end.
>>
>>25165094
Mental illness stopped being a theme and jumped front and center into the story. >>25165096 people will say it's not the editor, but who else would have been keeping him in check? I'm invested in his universe at this point so we'll see if he can right himself in Mistborn era 3 before he comes back to Stormlight.

It's a 1200 page book, there are going to be good things to say about it.

I disliked therapist Kaladin in this one just as much as I did in Wind and Truth, but at least we got to see him do fantasy Die Hard.

Shallan just sucks unfortunately. Like not even in that I hate her, or she's annoying, but Sanderson clearly didn't know what to do with her. He started out not knowing, found something in Words of Radiance, and then absolutely fucking lost it from Rhythm of War. Like how many secrets does this crazy bitch have? That doesn't have to be her arc every book, Brandon.

I enjoyed enough about the rest that it made up for the dogshit.

See, most who glaze him here are stuck into the greatest sunken cost fallacy in the history of the genre. Just imagine having bought all the Cosmere slop, finance the guy's Kickstarter Projects and then trying to justify to thelselveds that it was garbage all along.

I don't remember exactly the train of thought that leads him there, but both him and Cnaiur's entire logic for taking over the holy war, is imagining that somebody like Moenghus whos lived among da base hoomans for so long must have amassed so much power that it could only be challenged by the power of a war.

So Kellhus likely just assumes that Moenghus takes whatever he can for himself and infiltrated the Cishaurim as another token of power

you put it rightly he has exactly two dimensions, that are constantly flipped through so sporadically and arbitrarily that not enough time is really ever given to either dimension to be explored for something deeper unless you project something thats not there and pretend hes a deconstruction of morality and see what you want to see, imbuing a different other arbitrary dimension that isnt actually a dimension, just a reframing of why the two dimensions are barely explored.

This is disingenuous. There's way more to that character than that. Why would someone like that save Proyas from certain death in the desert?

I just finished The Twins Trilogy in Dragonlance. I'm proceeding well in my project of reading all the Dragonlance books that i went through when i was younger and after that i'm gonna continue where i left the series: Somewhere around Dhaemon saga. Before this trilogy i read Eaters of the Dead and the first Witcher book. If i asked you 3 fantasy books as a suggestion that are
-easy to read
-fun
-contain good dialog and storytelling

What would you suggest? I'm kinda hoping on learning something in the process hand not just having a fun. Like stuff i can reread and pay attention to all the various aspects that make everything in the book just so good. David Gemmell's The King Beyond the Gate and Legend were the last stories that really impressed me on that department.

Sidenote. Damn, it was funny reading about Raistlins antics. Dude is the original sigma who is solely focused on the grind, women just get in the way. :D

I have fond memories of the first three. I read them like twenty years ago.
