Gut pagespammer alive
Yeah, I hate it when people read and discuss science fiction and fantasy in the science fiction and fantasy thread. I wish them physical harm too.
So what should we do, as a community, about the Frieren tranny?

>>25456911Fantasy is more about the power of the individual, and the wibbly wobbly natural forces of the world dictating how you should act within it. Fantasy also usually takes place in a fallen world. It's big time inspired by europeans living in the ruins of the roman empire and trying to figure out how to restore it or at least learn from it, etc. It's also a lot more emotional and normiecoded than sci-fi, which is more autistic.

>>25456911I've often heard the adage that Science Fiction looks forwards, while fantasy looks backwards. While a truism, I find it lacking. If you had me pin down the core of science fiction vs fantasy, I'd first note that they're not naturally opposed genres, and in fact are often combined. In fact science-fiction was the fantastic, and fantasies often fluttered around new ideas. Yet I must propose, I feel, two cores for the cleaved genres. Science-Fiction I feel is simpler; its the Big Idea. Whether a short story or a novel the driving force is interaction with an idea either concise or murky. The Raft is a dissertation on the gravitational constant, The Foundation has psychohistory, Dune it's precognition. I'm sure you have your favorite examples in mind, but I felt the need to give a sampling. If Science-Fiction is the Big Idea, which is very easy to grasp and summarize, then that leaves us with the problem of Fantasy. I feel every debate on this knows the appeal and rigors of Science-Fiction, it's fantasy that we get sticky. For many there does need to be some element of magic, lest they become historical fiction. Does the supernatural then become the hallmark of fantasy? If so then I feel that's a poor foundation for a genre. Magic is interesting, but most of the seminal works don't have it feature often. Lord of the Rings has magic as a narrative tool more than a driving force. What then is fantasy?I argue that fantasy's core is The Narrative or The Hero. You read Conan the Barbarian for the narrative of a powerful roguish man succeeding through brawn and cunning. Lord of the RIngs is a powerful cultural narrative in the form of a trilogy. David Gemmell bound the messy colonial history of Ireland in heroic fantasy. Escapism is a part of it certainly, in that we become fellow travelers. Urban Fantasy itself is a thrumming engine of passion usually, we have characters propelled by the hungers o vampirism or the wild abandons of lycanthropy more often than not. But fantasy at it's core is this narrative drive for our protagonist. With these two standards set I think its obvious how there can be interplay. There are some hard science- fiction novels that have no interest in characterization or even a plot in favor of expounding on a theorem. Mirrored we have the "hard magic" championed by Brandon Sanderson that presents a Big Idea in the form of a magic system for each of his sub-settings. My value from fantasy? I feel that I must say one word, capitalized to show my second naivete peeking through: ADVENTURE. Our Hero uses ritual and plot as vectors to take us through a marvelous itinerary. Robert Louis Stevenson or Dumas are patron saints from an elder age. And you ask for recommendations? Jack Vance is an easy bridge between science-fiction and fantasy. Clark Ashton Smith and Robert E Howard both write bejeweled prose, each a master of the short story. GRRM's Fevre Dream is a sweat-drenched vampire story. All carry us swiftly along.

>>25456719The Infinite State - The Decurion Saga #1 - Richard Swan (2026)The Decurion Empire provides free housing, utilities, food, and healthcare to all its citizens. Automated factories manufacture immense quantities of commodities for domestic consumption and international trade. Citizens fly their autocruisers through the air lanes. Hypersled racing is the most popular sport in the galaxy and the team for Leonis, the capital of the Empire, is often the best in the galaxy. There's even a nominal free market. The Decurion Empire is also a totalitarian state. Citizens are stratified as Party Member, Class I, II, and Unproductive. Their rights and subsistence depend entirely on their classification. There are no civil rights. What is politically acceptable regularly changes. Aside from the Unproductives, everyone must be Productive and Reproductive. Men are sent off in vast numbers at a young age to die in the Empire's wars across the galaxy. Women must continually be giving birth. Both are given medals of service. The only allowable form of sex is the missionary position for the purpose of procreation. To do anything else is punishable up to death.Everything belongs to the state. Everything you are is because of Pater Aeternus. There is no god. There is nothing outside of the state. The state is infinite. The Ministries control and dispose of the populace as they see fit. Even senior party members aren't safe. All that can be hoped for is that Political Enforcement doesn't come for you. Purges and coup attempts happen every now and again, so staying alive can be difficult.Life is this society is presented through three viewpoints. Katherine is the wife of the Lamprey Corporation's director. Life has always been good for her. There's little to complain about, or at least there wasn't, not until her life was personally affected. Cyprian is an Inspektor for the Ministry of Justice. Many of his cases are sanctioned homicides that don't go anywhere. Doing his job well took everything from him except his life. Julian is the Hypersled Racer for Leonis. He may be the best racer in the galaxy, but he's a foreigner, a detestable reminder that life exists outside of the Empire. He doesn't realize he signed his life away without even reading the contract. The first half is these three trying to survive daily life in Leonis. Each character explores a different aspect of how the Empire operates. Specifically politics, enforcement, and image management. The second half takes place on a different planet where a new nation is being formed. The story follows its founding, early development, and the Empire's reaction.Everything about this was great. For me it's Swan's best novel yet. I was fully immersed and engaged with the characters and the world. The characters really felt like people who developed over time. The races were a surprisingly enjoyable inclusion. I don't have any significant complaint.Rating: 5/5

It's a bad series, a clusterfuck of story and characterization that isn't very well done by any aspect, but which attempts to compensate for its weaknesses by adding in excessive shipping faggotry and DARKNESS. The normal anon can see this as the shit it is, and may enjoy it, hate it or be indifferent to it, but all the while recognizing that the series itself, regardless of their opinion, is plain bad. However, these very aspects that try to smear over the shit of its core make it a breeding ground for aspie, unsociable underageb& faggots who engage in every kind of faggotry both online and in the real world. The superpowered characters all trying their hardest to look cool, the jutsus, peculiar, colorful clothes, the whole ninja faggotry and everything about the Naruto world fuels their escapist fantasies, while the pity-party character backgrounds, emphasis on revenge, and overall preachiness of the series make it fit just right with the mary-sueish drives of your average preteen and his sense of unwarranted self-importance towards the world. Exactly the kind of shit that makes little kiddies and underageb& retards eat this shit right the fuck up.Naruto is basically THE series to attract the most hated anime fanbase known to /a/, which is why, regardless of individual opinions, it is the responsibility of every anon to troll the fuck out of this show and everyone who likes it, and ensure that no Naruto threads ever encourage the newfriends to show their faces here.

>>25457601it's hard to have a good story without good characters
>>25457594No surprise, the man who wrote some of the least engaging books of all time would argue that part of what makes stories truly engaging is unimportant. It's a testament to how cool his ideas were that anyone cares about the shit he wrote at all. Unless you have some truly incredible and novel ideas, definitely do not neglect characters. Even then, don't do so; why would you?
>>25457615I disagree, though good characters help the story. All that is truly required is passable characters that stay internally consistent, they don't have to be interesting or grow or even particularly believable. >>25457229The first book is very entertaining, despite being poorly written.
>>25457042As he said, fuck baynefag.
>>25457621Wrong. I think the type of story that can get away with shallow characters has to be one that hides that fact very very strongly.I'm thinking of something like the first two Osten Ard books. They would apply exactly to what you're describing, when you're along for the ride, being introduced to the structure of the world, new events, new revelations, and watching how they affect the characters, you don't actually care how repetitive it is that Miriamele and Simon constantly cry in their heads about how much they miss John Josua despite their being zero weight to their expressed feelings because you know nothing about the relationship, it might aswell be some generic abstract grief stricken parent child relationship. Then theres Morgan, who constantly drinks and cries about how none of the adults believe in him or respect him, despite their constant efforts to get him to stop being an alcoholic and participate in the royal duties that would garner him respect, then theres the fact that hes clearly traumatized by his fathers death but doesn't want to acknowledge that his father matters to him. Morgan is clearly supposed to be that type of ironic mess teenager you'd see in 2000s shows, where they are the exact cause of their own problems, but they act like they deserve better or are owed something because they're sad and emotional. From a zoomed out perspective, these arent bad foundations for a character. I don't think grief is as interesting as normretards think it is, but rather how it makes you interpret the world. Simon and Miriamele especially are protective and expectant of Morgan because they dont want what happened to their son to happen to their grandson. The problem is...John Josua is still too vague and generic for the perspective to actually mean anything. You could replace John Josua with any random dead kid, and a grief stricken parent would probably treat another child they care about very protectively. Now if we actually understood anything about John Josua's personality, or what caused his death, and the concerns that reflects on Morgan, it would be more interesting. The thing is. There are 4 books in the series. All about 1000 pages mass market paperback and 600 standard paperback.By the 2nd book, nothing about John Josua as a person, as a human being is revealed. What is revealed, is his importance to the plot. That he was dangerously close to some shenanigans with the sithi mirror, and that he possibly found some secret under the castle. So the main POV characters remain insanely stagnant and shallow, even if they had interesting premises from the first book. And the cracks start to form. When you spend pages upon pages with your characters virtually in the same place, or doing nothing at all. Character's actually need to be deep so that they don't remain stagnant. If you're going to focus so strongly on the plot, it doesn't actually matter to waste so much time pretending your characters have depth.

I'm pretty sure I don't really want "fantasy", but when I think of fantasy I just think of like LoTR and Sword of Shannara and shit (I read those when I was a kid), I probably have an ignorant idea of what fantasy is, but I could see myself getting really into sci-fi. I like computers and tech, I also love trippy/psychedelic stuff. Weird/experimental is a huge plus.
>>25458341What kind of sci-fi do you want? Military sci-fi? Horror? A survival adventure? Something with intrigue?
>>25458341This is one of the first sci-fi books I ever read. It might just be nostalgia but I really like it.
>>25458335Dune 1, maybe 2That's it
>>25458349Sorry, the whole genre is a big blind spot for me so I didn't think to include that haha.>Something with intriguesounds a lot better to me than the other options you listed. At this point in my life I don't care too much for action/adventure type stuff... I like the idea of a really immersive world. I could see myself getting into something where there's some sort of mystery to be solved about the world itself. I don't think this really counts as sci-fi but I read "Never Let Me Go" by Ishiguro last year, and I did like the general air of mystery as the characters and I slowly pieced together what their reality was. I could also see myself liking something where the characters live in a sci-fi world but the plot perhaps doesn't actually have much to do with the world, if that makes sense? Like sci-fi elements being described as passing details rather than something that's specifically supposed to wow me on the merit of just being something that doesn't exist in the real world.Whatever you rec doesn't necessarily have to fit those requirements, I just kinda tossed a few ideas out there of what might seem interesting to me. I'm open-minded because I'm going in pretty blind, willing to try anything.>>25458355Hell yeah ty anon, added to my ebay cart.
Book of the New Sun filtered me.
>>25458367If you want something more thoughtful you might try Ender's Game. It's about a boy in the future being sent to a military school. There's almost no action, it's more about the psychologies of the characters. Also be careful to avoid spoilers, the book has a big twist at the end.
>>25458371The trick is to start at the first book and not the third, which is what I accidentally did. I was thinking "Man, this really is confusing."
>>25458375>It's about a boy in the future being sent to a military schoolNTA but I missed out on the first few years of Harry Potter because some dickhead told me "It's about a boy who goes to wizard school" and that was itWhat a way to describe Prisoner Of Azkaban

I'm diving into the unknown trying any sci-fi so I can't let a synopsis dissuade me
>>25458401>military school doesn't sound too interesting to me but "it's more about the psychologies of the characters" sounds up my alleyIt follows the lives of a couple of child prodigy preteens conscripted to space battle school after humanity just barely survived an alien invasion, is on the ropes, and is struggling to muster every available brain cell to find a way to surviveA lot more psychological and tactical than action-oriented. Think the Polgar sisters in the middle bit of Starship Troopers, the part with all the talking and Mr Rasczak's History And Moral Philosophy and none of the shooting.Predicted internet and 4chan in a surprising way that i won't spoil.>>25458390There
>>25458367Dune 1 strikes me as more your cup of tea. You would enjoy the prose i think, which deliberately recalls Shakespeare to lend it a scriptural feel, and there are poems and epigrams scattered throughout the book. A lot of readers expecting Star Wars and finding a touch of Hamlet got filtered by it.>I’ve never left your service. You’re the one left me … to think you dead. And I, being cast adrift, made what shrift I could, waiting for the moment I might sell my life for what it’s worth...

Cultivation stories would improve tenfold, if characters actually showed respect to each other, instead of calling everyone beneath them trash and ants. How am I supposed to believe this society can even function, when 95% of the characters show disdain for everyone beneath them, and only 5% show real honor.Who are the real villains, when harming those beneath you is commonplace?

>>25458973That's the appeal though.
>>25458989What are they "cultivating"? Do they grow pod people, then? Would be on brand.
>>25458980It's a genre popular in east Asian countries. Basically, it's a world where martial artists are capable of drawing spiritual energy into themselves, in order to enhance their power. Breaking normal human limits. Drawing in the spiritual energy is referred to as "cultivating". Over the course of years, a cultivator will become so powerful, that they are indistinguishable from a god. At which point, they often ascend to the heavens, leaving the mortal realm behind.Cultivation stories are typically about the main character growing in power. That is, if he isn't already all powerful. There is a lot of hierarchical drama in these stories. People who are more powerful tend to make people lower in power subservient to them.In Medieval stories, typically there are some snobby noble characters that makes everyone grovel to him and abuses his power. Now imagine if that was normal expected behavior. That is what society is like in cultivation novels. It's completely normal to make everyone below you grovel like dogs. It's really annoying to read.

To the anon that shilled this to me, and other interested parties:Dr. AdderEnjoyed this book. It was clumsy, amateurish at times, and seemed to revel in being grotesque while never having the guts to take its premises to the logical extremes of grotesquerie. (Could have done so much more with Dr. Adder's clients/victims) Much of the plot was driven by a series of bizarre events happening with no relation or setup. But for all that it was fun and funny throughout. I liked some of the concepts: the interface as the physical/social manifestation of a battle egos, the SPS, the possibly unintentionally funny fact that the high tech CIA superweapon that has to be grafted on to an amputed limb and fries the user's nervous system is apparently just a metal hand that punches people. Some things that were unclear to me: What was the point of the Phoenix Egg Ranch / Brothel? The whole first chapter could have been cut. Why did Limmit agree to work for Dr. Adder, and why was he so immediately loyal? What was the point of The Visitor beyond forcing Limmit into the sewers?
>>25459309Come on lad, you might personally dislike Wolfe's writing, but how could he possibly be described as just 'bad'?
>>25459311His writing insists upon itself.
>>25459289Yes because DBZ-tier cultivation has taken over the (slightly) more restrained forms of the 20th century. For examples of the latter watch old kungfu movies.

How many bad books have to get published before we can acknowledge 40k really doesn't have much storytelling potential? I remember reading bloodquest and it's basically about space marines going places and shooting things. By the end of it they'd gone to a space hulk, a planet being invaded by orks, the eye of terror, some chaos planet and a planet being invaded by chaos. It's a fine story but where the fuck do you even go from there? Some copy-pasted hive planet? There's nowhere interesting left to go and the stories recycle the same five aliens.
>>25459521grimdark = edgy, or at least it should be...
The fact that "Grimdark" is even a genre separate from dark fantasy or sci-fi horror shows how high on their own supply 40kids are
>>25459527Because it's purely down to the quality of the writers. A good writer can tell a well-written and compelling story in any universe, but the writers they hire are actual fanfiction tier cretins. Barely above Ernest Cline in terms of quality.Pick any universe generally considered quite well put together, like the Conan universe just as an example. If you got some 90 IQ undergraduate to write a story set in that world it doesn't matter how good the underlying universe is the story is going to be dogshit. Likewise the universe of 40k is excellent and has enormous potential, but the writers that GW hires are terrible, so their output is terrible. It's a huge disservice to the setting imo.

Finally finished book 2. Wasnt able to read as much today because when I tried reading in the morning I was out of focus and not enjoying it. But was able to get into it towards the latter half of the book after a lengthy break. After reading 2 of the 5 books...I think I agree that its not particularly well written, atleast for me. The events just flow in an incredibly odd and arbitrary way that makes it hard to latch onto anything because things sort of just happen. Ganelon just stops hating Corwin and he even says he doesnt know why, and then becomes a loyal lapdog that does whatever Corwin asks. You get zero impression of the guy he was before, or that their former antagonistic relationship was even real, not that it matters to me, because hes given no real motivation anyway for having betrayed Corwin in the first place. Then theres Lorrain who exists for like 10 pages and then dies? When it comes to battles, other than the one with Benedict, Corwin just walks up to whoever he wants to kill and wins because hes better and smarter, parry parry riposte, killing blow. Then theres Gerrard who conveniently believes in and trusts him. Im not even saying this one is particularly bad writing, to some degree you simply have to except certain things are true in a story simply because the story says so. And it is convenient that he could trust Gerrard to calm Benedict down and even come help him with Benedict after knocking him out. But it all feels like a dream, because Gerrard can be trusted...simply because Corwin tells us so. You see what I mean? Nothing really has weight to it in the story, things happens suddenly and eventually, because they have to. I think Benedicts chase and fight is basically the only time where Corwin actually has to deal with a problem that has weight from the story itself not merely his words, and the reason it largely has that weight is because of the black road, and the wagon slowing him down, having to deal with these two problems (even though he solves the former through mere brute force) and the fact that he couldnt use the shadow power to shake of benedict makes the encounter interesting. Then of course theres the awfully convenient fact that he alone happens to know a way to make gunpowder work in amber, and the even more finally convenient fact that Eric just happens to die somehow i explicably, with not even a described encounter, we actually dont even know what or who killed him, unless I sped read too hard (but I was invested towards the end so I dont feel like I speedread to a detrimental pace).Despite all this, aside from the worst parts of the books (Descriptions of Corwin and Ganelon traveling through the shifting landscapes of the shadow with somewhat flowery prose, that all feels like filler so that the book isnt too short) I somehow actually quite like the books and find them fun. Astonishing what something being short does for your tolerance. Also the way information is given is genuinely cool
>>25460072why are there two different 5 stars? what are the ones on the right?
>>25460079Kill yourself spambitch. You are directly responsible for the current shit state of this general. Never post again.

>>25460121Seems like a bad idea in terms of digestion.
>>25460110What's wrong with filler though? Clearly the author thought it adds something or they wouldn't have included it. Why are you still reading a book that's boring or doesn't respect your time? Why not read a synopsis instead?
>>25460121I'm not sure I understand. Could you explain this to me in science-fictional terms?
two guys consistently talk about a new book virtually every other week and gets shit on virtually every other day
Saw this at the library and I decided on my next book series to read. I am not done with Chronicles of Amber, I did say I'd read atleast 2 books. So ill continue to use it as a buffer between big annoying books as a break

Let me just say, I do not remember the prologue chapter of The Expanse in the show. I honestly barely remember the show but I don't remember human being fused with some machinery pleading to be helped.
>>25460288probably. don't want /lit/ losers to know my account.
Reading through The Domination of Draka series currently. Only about seven chapters into the first book, it's alright thus far, nothing else to report.
>>25460068I won't spoon feed you. But here's where you would start, if you were a true SFF fan: Start with the Greeks, the Romans, and then the Western Canon of literature (Bloom's essential list is adequate). Read Asimov's New Guide to Science (1984 Revised Text), and all his nonfiction works are also recommended. Watch the first and only season of Jonny Quest at least 3 times all the way through. OK. Now read everything HG Wells wrote from 1890-1900. Then proceed to read everything published by Michael Moorcock and Harlan Ellison from 1960-1980. You'll know what to read next.
which of these fuckhuge series about a multiverse is bestEternal ChampionChronicles of AmberDark TowerI tried to read Dark Tower but I got bored around the point the Gunslinger gets his finger chopped off and I dropped the stand 3/4th through
>>25460572>Eternal Championthere's like 15 novels in this and they're only somewhat related
>>25460146What's it that you don't understand about my position? I like the book's story and am interested in seeing it to the end, I just don't care about flashbacks. Their absence in my reading did nothing to disturb the reading flow and my enjoyment.
>>25460079About Ganelon. Zelazny added quite a lot of literary references, so you're supposed to know Ganelon is the literary archetype of the traitor and this, in turn, is supposed to make you wary of his behaviour. All that is in the past, so technically you don't even need to know the details of what he did, except that maybe Corwin was not a good guy in the first place. It may or may not work for readers.

>>25460572cosmere :)
>>25460658There's a specific trilogy too but it didn't stand out imo.
>>25460009Books 1-3 are a complete trilogy. 4-6 are a single coherent story. 7-10 seem to be the same but I only read 7-8 when they first came out, and haven't circled back. I wasn't as impressed as with the first two trilogies. The author doesn't make it feel stretched, at least through book 6. Without spoiling (unless you want it), the second trilogy reframes the whole series to be a lot less of a "subversion of LOTR" than the first trilogy initially appears.
>>25460072you have shit taste
So, any of you fags red Stover? I tried his Caine series, after the Traitor Star Wars EU novel, and it really hit the spot
