>>25524572Didn't read it and won't because the plot seems boring as shit.
>>25524572DNF, thought the story seemed mediocre but needed something to read, prose was dull and uninspired
Finished this one at last: It was 'meh'Trio of former heroes hired to investigate some noble girl's disappearance, who, guess what, was a dyke (this would have make me drop the book, but since she showed up little, I kept reading)None of the heroes stand out, not for me; maybe because this is part of a greater franchise, and maybe I had to know about their deeds, but they never gave me an air of great adventurers that matched their legendThe plot twist... didn't do much either; again, it felt that it was connected to another an older story so it carried little impactSo, since the story wasn't good enough to drive me deeper into this franchise , I'd be moving to another book series

Gonna read Shroud by Adrian Tchaikovsky after I finish Valis by PKDValis sucks btw
I found a copy of The Penultimate Truth by PKD in a thrift store a few days ago. Is it worth reading? I finally read VALIS late last year, but that was the first time I had read a new PKD book (to me) in years. Most of the 8-10 PKD books I've read I've re-read but not all. Thoughts on radio dramas? Why does Between Two Fires get advertised so much ITT?
>>25524523Update on reading War For the Rose throne quadruple (Priest of Bones). Despite the predominant amount of fags in the protagonist's inner circle I'll still give the first two books a 4/5 and the other two 3/5. The first major gripe i have though is how abrupt Thomas went from 'I don't trust anybody' to 'I can't hide things anymore to Ann' despite the risk of her being a spy for the crown and knowing her whore lover is a spy that's using her for information. The second gripe is the lack of a real motivation for Thomas to go against his boss and defacto king in the capital. He has no gun in the fight and is not apart of any faction in the Queen's Men. He's just being manipulated by the Provost Marshal's promiscuous hag wife to do her dirty work.I'm not sure whether it was Yev or Pagereviewer that recommended this series to me, but you lied about Thomas being indifferent like Kelhus based on a single line about him being less emotional than his brother in the first book. While it's true Thomas is not impulsive and wroth like Jochan, he's not indifferent either.

I have finished reading Olaf Stapledon’s Star Maker. I loved the philosophical questions it gave to the reader, and the whole vertigo that leaves you after having finished. Are there any similar books? I tried Borges short novels afterwards, and despite being lovely. About a quarter of the way through Dune Messiah and it feels completely unnecessary. The emotional state Paul is in was already covered in Dune. I really didn't need a sequel to tell me he feels bad about the jihad and that he questions his decision to lean into the prophecy for his own benefit, that's like half of his character in the original. The most interesting part so far is seeing the Fremen's regret turned to anger at Paul and their changing culture, which is sandwiched between Paul's moping and the comical Legion of Doom conspiring to take him down with the help of Steersman Ex Machina which is unbelievably stupid and only there to explain why he can't foresee what they are doing. He could see the future just fine around the Fremen whose diet is 80% melange and are explicitly stated to have a slight amount of clairvoyance due to it but the Guildman's autism field is just too strong. I saw someone say it has precedent with Fenring but I imagine the whole idea around him was that he was disconnected from the "race consciousness" because his nuts didn't work. Or maybe all of my complaints are acknowledged and explained later on, I don't know, but I'm not really enjoying it. Feels far too different tonally anyway. I'm really only dealing with the sequels because of the praise I've heard heaped on God Emperor but if this is the quality of one of the "good" sequels then I can't help but feel I'm setting myself up for disappointment.

>>25524523The Broken God - A Requiem for Homo Sapiens #1 - David Zindell (1992)The prequel, Neverness, provides significant context for The Broken God. I recommend reading it first, but it's not required. Having a single book be followed by a trilogy is an unusual choice. The Broken God isn't science fiction in the usual way. Science is only a small part of the whole. The central ideology of Neverness and The Order that oversees it is Holism. Holism believes that all systems of knowledge are interrelated and none of them have supremacy over the other. That means that science, occultism, philosophy, and religion are valid and meaningful methods. There are no formal boundaries between these methods and many of the most influential galactic organizations freely intermix these approaches. The story is told through a not-quite omniscient narrator who details Danlo's life from his teens to early 20s. Then there's an extraordinary amount of exposition. How you feel about that may determine whether you'll be able to enjoy this more than anything else. The driving force of the narrative is the drama caused by Danlo and Hanuman's oppositional worldviews. This provides the structure for introducing more and more ideas to consider. Danlo's day-to-day life is the entirety of the book, and after he arrives in Neverness, it's essentially his life in and out of school for around 10 years.Neverness is the only city on the planet of Icefall and is quite interesting in of itself. The rest of the world is humans who 1000s of years ago genetically modified themselves into Neanderthals to live in perpetuity as hunter-gather tribes. Neverness has many technological restrictions, which makes it an odd mix of high and low tech. The primary mode of personal transportation is skating across the variously colored ice. The descriptions of the city were delightful. There are aliens, though they all may be genetically modified humans from millennia past. For me, none of this is an issue. I've written many times before that I greatly enjoy this sort of narrative and I found all the exposition to be fun rather than boring. The problems I do have, which are more than a few, are greatly outweighed by what I enjoyed. There's much less focus on sex compared to Neverness, but there's still so much about the membrum. The character development remains spiky where sudden and drastic decisions change everything. This gives it a melodramatic tone. I'm conflicted about there being a narrator at all, but without all the exposition this would be a completely different book. This is a weighty book, both in ideas and prose, and I had to read it considerably slower than I usually do. That enhanced the experience though, as this is among the best book of ideas I've read, and it deserves to be fully considered. If I made a list of the most underread SF novels, this would be on it.Rating: 5/5

>>25526321>if this is the quality of one of the "good" sequels then I can't help but feel I'm setting myself up for disappointment.YesThere's good reason why many fans say "stop at Dune 1"Me includedThere are a few good bits in Messiah but truth is that about half the book is filler. It's only 60,000 words and about half of that was going to be the final chapter(s) of Paul's arc, but the publisher thought it made Dune 1 too long. (And also probably disliked the timeskip.) So they made Herb hive it off into a sequel novel, but had to pump it with filler so that it would hit the 60,000 minimum to be a novel.Under such circumstances the writing is not going to be great as you can guess. And the story, well... let's just say I didn't care for it.
>>25524693>Carrying this shit into literature is so stupidmagic is puerile
Dune is good but it's not very good sci-fi as such. It's more like a high fantasy novel in a nominally sci-fi universe. Which might be suitable for the OP who already reads fantasy, I'm just saying it's not representative of sci-fi as a genre.
>>25526128>I assume you read this becuse I put it as the book of the month. Nice to see it has any effect.Actually no, I don't check /sffg/ that often. I didn't know it was book of the month I was just sharing. I'm sure someone did read it because of that

Then there's the conversations with the police commander (the fat guy, I can't recall his name), and the conversations with rachel and the head of the replicant company - all of those were really well acted and interesting imo. BR2047 really leans hard into being an atmospheric film too. I'm not sure that a movie will ever surpass a book's conceptual discussions, but I think something like Alien makes a better movie than a book..

>>25526792I don't even think there was a reason to "wrap up" Paul's character, his arc ends ends in the Cave of Birds and because of the premonitions we already know what it leads to. The book ends abruptly and there are a lot of loose ends and/or wasted plotlines but ultimately it's the story of Paul and his story ends when he takes the throne. There's nothing in Messiah that comes off as surprising, Dune does everything but explicitly tell the reader what his reign is going to be like.

Finished this last night. Didn't find it very good desu. I liked the whose premise, the ideas behind it are different than most of its SF contemporaries. But the writing style is rather poor. On the upside, at least this makes it a quick read. The characters are also weak though, and it's not really a hard SF to look through it. It also has an urbanite POV anti-religious messaging that's not subtle at all. The bleak ending is probably its most redeeming quality. Is Disch worth going into? I see "The Genocides" is his first novel, so I presume he might've gotten better with time and his later work is more enjoyable. I need /lit/'s opinion on this.

>>25527656god fucking dammit fucking FUCK
So many authors don't finish their series.
I would say this is when the book starts to truly get interesting. Prior to this, character motivations were kind of "poorly" established and by that, I mean barely established whatsoever, the MC's actions are kind of legitimately crazy and unbelievable even if its for his family, and naturally we know nothing of his family or relationship to gauge how proportionate his response to his governments actions are. It leans too much on intuition otherwise, which is shallow. And you cant properly frame this as classic rebellions of old because rebellions are typically internal, and the key factor of a rebellion is ultimately convincing the citizens to revolt. If you just go to a foreign neighbour and convince them to invade its not really a revolt, just an invasion. The reason why this page is interesting anyway is because it point's finally towards there being more to this than had seemed, but also almost more importantly, shines new light on a conversation the MC had earlier with one if the Noble family figures of the country he escaped to, where he asked him to teach him fencing and falcrony...which he had books about in his home country...

How many misses do you give an author before giving up on them? Sometimes i only like a single book and dislike everything else. How am I supposed to know which I'd like without looking at everything they've ever done?
>>25528117I pretty much never give authors second chances. If one book by them is bad, the odds that another book by them will be significantly better is lower than the odds reading another author from my backlog.
Gorgo! It was pretty bad. Please note that I never watched the movie.I expected a story about notGodzilla ravaging London, instead I got a scaly notKingKong (so a midget)*, abysmal dialogues, a shitty plot, and a "good morning, I hate women" main character. The script the author was working off of must have been goddamn terrible. (I understand the movie doesn't contain as much titties, though.)I was so bored reading it.* A bigger Gorgo showed up for the third act, but it didn't help salvage this dreck.
>>25528141Live by the pulp, die by the pulp.
>>25528117If it's the first book I've read by an author, I write them off. If I've read one before, I generally put them on the backburner after one I don't like. If I've read several I liked, I'll give them a down book now and again.

>>25524683Can you breathe without thinking about it?
Voyage of the Jerle Shannara has covered a lot of ground in the first volume (of a trilogy). It involves a voyage across the Blue Divide -- the Western stretch of sea or to be pedant the Pacific -- in search of three talismans on three islands that open a stronghold on another unknown chunk of land, which should hold a strong magic. It has been a while since I've read a pure fantasy book so it's kinda funny to see "the magic built up and lanced out of his fingertips" or "the magic welled up inside the sword then exploded out" and that's about all the explanation you get.So far in book one, we have covered the Why of the journey, gathered the airship(...!!), Captain and crew, obligatory wing riding companions, fighters, plot relevant characters, etc., including a young female clairvoyant seer who clings to the Druid as her sole purpose in life and a shapeshifter. Book one is not yet complete but we are already at island #3, with the Isle Witch + Mwellret entourage hiding in ambush. Prophecies and foreshadowing abound.
>>25528200No, I cannot.

Does Reynolds get better at writing characters than he was in Revelation Space. I really enjoyed the novel but the characterisation was weak. E.g. Ana Khouri didn't seem real especially her internal thoughts when they were training in the Nostalgia for Infinity, for example
>>25528235The only novel of his that I've read is Harvest of Time (2013) and I thought his characterisation was on point.
>>25528235It takes a lot for a series to be worth reading 25+ books.
>>25528233With my eyes closed.
>>25528242Maybe he improved over time. He's fairly prolific so he must have got a little better with all that writing
>>25528250The main trilogy is (wait for it) a trilogy. There are two other standalone novels outside. Oh yes he wrote another post-trilogy novel continuation (Eversion?) but everything else is short stories.
Are there any male-oriented urban fantasy novels other than the Dresden Files?
>>25528250>>25528258What is this absolute nonsense I'm readin g? This is too stupid to be AI.
>>25528258>Eversion?Inhibitor Phase. And we have Chasm City which is another novel that the wiki suggests to read before of after Revelation Space. Then there are two spin-off novels if people care but yeah, everything else is just short stories.
>>25528262Yes, of course, there are a lot, and they aren't even Japanese.
>>25528277Yes, Chasm City is standalone. It mainly introduced that antagonist of book #2. The wiki page has been restructured in the years that I have checked it out. Mayhaps the other standalone was "Diamond Dogs, Turquoise Days" at the time. And the three Prefect novels. I forgot about those but again, they're unrelated to the main RS trilogy despite taking place within the universe.
>>25528288>Diamond Dogs, Turquoise DaysThat's two novellas set in the RS universe, yes. Diamond Dogs was pretty good. Haven't read Turquoise Days. >three Prefect novelsI think there are only two? Prefect got renamed.>unrelated to the main RS trilogyTo be honest Reynolds himself suggests not to be a chronology autist. He says people should read his RS short stories in whatever order they want because it doesn't really matter. It's not because a story is set in a given universe that it's important to the main plot (as you've already said.)
>>25528300Prefect was a trilogy that took place in the Rust Belt (formerly known as the Glitter Band). I have no idea why you are replying to me when you won't even use a basic google search.

I am once again looking for weird fantasy to read.
My favorite hobby these days has been going to one of those coffee shops with bottomless coffee and sitting and studying/rereading Gene Wolfe very slowly, and trying to savor each section. I liked the solar cycle series on my first read, but I'm loving it on the second. Reading is so kino, I can't believe that more people aren't into it.

>>25528526What's so weird about it?
I've been listening to fantasy stories on audible while taking walks the last few years, and here are my short thoughts on each of the series I've listened to:>The WitcherLiked these a lot, made me realize how badly the games are written in comparison.>The Prince of NothingHeld my attention until the cuckholding part started going on and on. Turned into just kind of a miserable read, and not in an interesting way.>MistbornHonestly? I liked these books well enough. They weren't masterpieces but they kept my attention. The magic system autism was fun.>Stormlight ArchiveI liked the first book with the bridge builders a lot, but the second book just felt so unfocused that I lost interest and dropped it halfway through.>The Wheel of TimeReally fun series, but the plot started to slow to a crawl in the later books and I stopped before I got to the books written after the original author's death. I remember the witches becoming so incompetent that it started being funny to me.>The Black CompanyI liked this one a lot, even if it got a little unfocused at some parts. However, after the main plot wrapped up and everyone went south to Mexico or whatever I lost interest. Started to feel like the author was writing for the sake of writing.>Malazan Book of the FallenI'll be honest I barely remember anything about this series despite reading it fairly recently. I don't remember disliking it but none of the characters or plots really stuck in my head. I remember the second book being in a big-ass desert? Thats about it.>Game of ThronesA really solid series even up until the latest book. Some of the perspectives are more boring than others but I think that adds to it in a way. A real shame it'll never get an ending.>Kingkiller ChronicleSpeaking of never getting an ending. The first book was promising but the second one felt really messy. I can't imagine the third one being good even if it did come out. Some cool concepts in there though.
>>25528637Didn't ask
>>25528603book 2takes one book to get you there butYEEHAW
>>25528637>However, after the main plot wrapped up and everyone went south to Mexico or whatever I lost interest.I enjoyed the southern Black Company books for all the plotting and scheming. Ostensibly it is a straightforward conflict between Taglios and the Shadowlands but there are so many subfactions and wildcards like Soulcatcher that you never know what is going to happen next. The fact that Mogaba of all people ends up being the final enemy is also very interesting.
>>25528647Elaborate. No, I will not read it.
>>25528637You should read/listen to the Drenai books. They're pretty good, especially the first two.
>>25524523post it on your twitter bruh
>>25528235>>25524523>Galactic NorthI remember reading the first storyfor such an interesting premise, none of the characters endeared themselves to me at all. any idea why that is?>>25528262unironically Harry Potterthere is also Laundry Files, which is digital revolution met Lovecraftian horror throughout the 20th century but told through the lens of a not-very-competent British government department slash special forces spy agency, but it's kind of woke and hard to read, and the last half of the series went off the rails. last I checked it was on hiatus because the author was so literally SHOOK by Trump's 1st presidency.there's also Rivers Of London which is Dresden Files meets Harry Potter but "Dresden" is actually an African in the British police's only wizard department. Very well-written, however it is pozzed to fuck and back. ROL in fact has not one single straight white male who isn't a bad guy or isn't regarded as an unlikeable cunt; all the good guys are brown and/or lesbian or gay; the recent plot twists are basically "imperialist white men did everything wrong"; and the last big bad was "white guy wants to revive British culture and this is bad BECAUSE IT JUST IS OKAY"yeah cupboard's pretty bare.
>found a book called of blood and fire i think last year?>put it on my to do list>order some books last week>it's a pre-order in my countryhuh, thought it was an older title by now
Thoughts on literally the most geneirc recently hyped 700+ page fantasy slop series? Has anybody here read this? Even a single person? I'm oddly curious how sloppy it is, the wiki does not give confidence and neither do the goodreads reviews, but GR reviews almost never do, some are just clearly more confirmation biasing slop that others.

>>25528637>cuckholding partWhich cuckolding event are you talking about? Though I agree that Scott is too interested in cuckoldry. The Last High King getting cucked by his mage 'friend' was a little too much IMO In addition to the current timeline cuckoldry of Achimiane, Cnair, and the sluttiness ot Queen Whore Esmenet who sleeps around with the guard captain and steward. Though I suppose the King (Kelhus) cuckolding the Mage (Achimiane) was intended to be an ironic inversion of the past.
>>25528637>how badly the games are written in comparison.Adaptations are always inferior to the source material. I'm glad I played the games before I was ruined by the novels.
I finished the Scythe trilogy on a recommendation and found the first book to be the worst YA trash out there but the books actually kept improving the less they focused on the book 1 main characters, even Thunderhead is a better character and I can't think of it without associating it with ChatGPT.

>>25530293I don't think that's what it was though. I'll say more after I get home.
>>25530293Sure, pedo. Whatever you say.
>>25530163>>25524523The charts mega has gone down a second time. I'm not putting it back up. As I've said several times before, I personally don't care about the charts. I rarely ever look at them and use them even less. The two primary reasons I did so was as a public service and to stop the same charts being posted every thread. Around 9 hours ago I apparently got an email that said it was terminated because it had been reported for illegal content. It doesn't specifically state what content it was, as the included link was for the entire folder that contained everything. As mega doesn't operate under US law, I can't say what it was. It's true that the zboards folder had NSFW content because that's what many of the 4chan boards are and why I had them on separate accounts for years. Since I know it was the main folder link, it wasn't the uploads folder. It could've been the excitable anon posting in this thread, or not. I know from searching for the link online that it had been shared to many other sites. One of them had a counter for how many times it had been opened and it was well over 10,000 last I looked years ago. I haven't done much of anything with it over the last few years so even though the backup is years outdated, there wouldn't be that much of a loss. If someone has a copy, feel free to do whatever with it. If nothing comes up, I may eventually see if only the books charts that aren't on the wiki can be uploaded there. The charts for rest of the boards may be out of luck. The only real question is whether it was reported because of me, or whether it was because of something they felt compelled to report. If it's the former, maybe someone else will have a better chance. If not, then well, that's how it is. Six years is long enough for it to be up as far as I'm concerned.
/sffg/ threads used to be comfy as fuck. I hate you all for ruining them. Why can't you all just be normal? What the fuck is wrong with (You)?

I've read over 100 pages in 3 days, for some reason my formatting has resulted in a page count thats largely accurate to the actual paperback pagecount so i dont have to do any calculations, it also explains why a page takes about 1 minute for me to read when for The Blade Itself it took about 40 seconds. I must say, I don't quite like that it feels like it takes so long, Im reminded of how much engineering jargon is stuffed into the book that makes me want to understand how a non engineer is dropping these so casually in a fictional setting, but its also possible that my ignorance only makes it seem more impressive than it is and hes just listing out a bunch of random doodads vaguely associated with mechanical workings.I will say, 150 pages feels almost like reading 200 pages for a typical book, except whenever I end up reading 200 pages for anything I'm typically breezing through it so painlessly that it doesnt feel like a mountain to climb. With this book, it never does not. Then again, I have basically taken zero breaks with this book unlike with past books I dealt with more comfortably, that probably counts for something. Its an uninteresting book so far that has compelled me to force myself to read more than more interesting books that are just bad or shallow. Maybe this means I'm close to ready to tackle history books.
>>25529934>>25529948I can understand people who dislike Bakker for his maybe too-pessimistic view of humans, the occasionally self-indulgent tone, etc., but pretending it's bottom tier genre fiction sloppa feels pretty silly. >>25530732Shut up, bakkertranny. Most of the books in the series are filler shit where nothing happens and then you get hit with a Rian Johnson tier twist ending with The Unholy Consult that is horrendously shit and lame and gay. Throat a shotgun barrel, FAG.
>>25530737It's an anonymous message board btw. You can just say yeah there was this bakkerfaggot spammer that soured my opinion of Bakker. That's a normal and human reaction lol, you don't have to make up elaborate excuses beyond that>and then you get hit with a Rian Johnson tier twist ending with The Unholy Consult that is horrendously shit and lame and gaBecause it's either that you didn't actually read the books, or your IQ is legit in the low 70s if you think the ending was a """twist""". You get to pick bro
>>25530725>>25530732Did you know that ummm... The Unholy Consult that's been shilled for six books straight nonestop actually died and went extinct behind the scenes a long time ago and that ummm.... Kelhus' order of not-wizard not-druids took over for them and are trying to revive the No-God?WHAT A TWEEST!!!
>>25530743<----‐ do this
>>25530745>The Unholy Consult that's been shilled for six books straightWhat? Shaeönanra is the only Consult character who dies off screen. Did you also not read the book and are just pretending to? Again, why these elaborate excuses? Just say that the bakkerfag was fucking annoying and it made you dislike Bakker by extension, how fucking hard can it be LMAO >>25530746Shy clitty
>>25530748You're a lying sack of shit. I got bored halfway through The White Luck Warrior and just read the ending on a wikia. I'm right. Blow your brains out. Now.
>>25530750There you go. How hard was that? You could have just said that from the start, shy guy>I'm rightAbout what? That it was an ass pull twist? Kellhus literally says that's how it's going to end an entire book before the Unholy Consult lol. You just didn't read it
>>25530751Its shit bitch nigga. Keep coping.
>>25530753Genuinely unironically sounds like you just got IQ filtered by fucking Bakker of all people. Just to get an idea of how bad it really is could you tell me what series so get your lil clitty going. Red Rising?
>IQOnly brainlets put stock in Intelligence Quotients, bitch nigga.
>>25530766>Intelligence quotientOk nvm I'm bullying a literal aspergers kid, I'm so sorry. Dw it's ok to not like Bakker, have a good day
>DUUUURRRRRR.... U UH A ASSBURGERS!!Bakkertranny... its time to stop posting.

>>25530775Sorry brah spelling common abbreviations out to sound more verbose or something is just extremely asperger-coded
>>25530799I'm going to kill your entire family
>>25530809You're 5'8 thoughbeit
>>25530810I'm 6'2
>>25530811Sorry I meant 62"
>>25530893>>25530893>>25530893
>>25524572its fine
>>25530811Damn u short asf clitty boy
>>25530650Wolfy's such a chud.
>>25530725I wouldn't say he's bottom tier, but he's very derivative and usually can't muster the conviction of his sources. There are better authors doing porn and fanfic.
>>25530725Hi, Josh.
>>25531306Keep my name out you mouth.
>>25531130>derivativeDerivative of whom?>can't muster the conviction of his sourcesThis is almost "it insists upon itself" tier lol but let's hear it then. What are his sources? How does it "fail to muster the conviction" of these?>>25531306IDK this bakkerfaggot might have been onto something. There's plenty of good reasons to not enjoy Bakker but everything I've read here just seems like cope
>>25530404why
>>25531415>Derivative of whom?D&D 1st ed appendix N authors like Vance and Zelazny, 101 level college ancient and Western history.
>>25531639Everything is synthetisation and everything is to some degree derivative you big dummy. Novelty is technically just really good synthetisation. Suggesting that something is derivative because it drew inspiration from as many different authors as apparently are in this Appendix N is genuinely silly lmao. And on top of that, it drew inspiration from HISTORY? Damn bro next you're going to tell me it's even so derivative as to rely wholesale on this thing called the English language, too. Creativity is truly deadYou also skipped over your "fail to muster the conviction" line. Could you please clarify this one?
>>25531663>You also skipped over your "fail to muster the conviction" line. Could you please clarify this one?Compare Esemenet to her obvious historical inspiration Theodora. Weaksauce. Kelhus vs Kugel or Jack. Tepid. It's weak shit for late millennials who haven't read a lot.
>>25531722>Compare Esemenet to her obvious historical inspiration TheodoraLol. Their similarities end at being prostitutes who were raised to empresses. I'm sure it was partially the inspiration, but again, literally everything is inspired by something elsewhere, and the resemblance is superficial >Kelhus vs KugelLOL. This character is le derivative because... they're both assholes who use people as means. Brilliant analysis
>>25531749Turns out that still fits the definition of boring and derivative even if you state it like you're laughing
