What are your favorite post-apocalyptic novels? I've read the Book of the New Sun series, the Dark Tower Series, and pic-related.
>>
>>25530995
Normalfags sure do like to fetishize post-apocalyptic settings.
>>
>>25530896
or the mega could just be collateral damage in an attempt to achieve this.
>>
>>25531003
You have it backwards. Post-apocalyptic settings are redpilled because they show the inevitable fate of the industrial society.

Redpilled has become normalized.

>I have conversed with fruiting fungi, ridden the air currents with poly-eyed gliders. I have met one being made up of many, and a whole society who shared a single subconscious. Once, I discussed the cosmic order with an entity who could perceive the past, present, and future simultaneously. And it has heartened me to learn that despite all their diverse forms and philosophies, their vast array of experiences and divergent anatomies and scale, they all shared one thing in common – every single one was inferior to me.

I read all of them as a teen or young'un and followed along for a while, dropped off during the Genesis series. A lot of people say the first book was a copy/imitation of LotR and I honestly don't remember specific details about it to that extent. I reread the last Heritage book (Scions of Shannara) from the second series and am now rereading this third series. They've been great fantasy; characters have thought put into them and the world holds onto a level of mystique.
I'm sure there's another series like "Voyage of the Jerle Shannara" where a band of typical fantasy characters go adventuring, to find and fight an AI enemy within its stronghold but I haven't found it yet.

>A lot of people say the first book was a copy/imitation of LotR and I honestly don't remember specific details about it to that extent.
Let's see:
Shea = Frodo
Flick = Sam at first, then Merry and Pippin
Allanon = Gandalf
Shady Vale = The Shire
Warlock Lord = Dark Lord
Skull Bearers = Dark Riders
Devouring Ancient Oak = Devouring Ancient Willow
Old Man of the River = Tom Bombadil
Elfstones = Galadriel's Light
Mist Wraith = Barrow Wight
Border Legion = Rangers
Balinor = Aragorn and Balin
Walled city Tyrsis, ruled by madman under control of warlock lord = Minas Tirith, ruled by madman under control of warlock lord
Giant insect in ruined city = Shelob
Gnomes = Orcs
Flick disguised as gnome = Sam disguised as Orc
Orl Fane = Gollum
Dragon's Teeth = Misty Mountains
Allanon's battle with Skull Bearer = Gandalf's battle with Balrog
Comany = Fellowship
Ellseidil = Elendil
Durin = Durin
Buckhannah = Brandybuck
Eventine = Evendim

And so, if Tolkien is too much for you you can always read Brooks.

Anon, he's just toe-ing the culturally acceptable line. The only thing he's ever known about Shannara is that old reviewers panned it as a blatant LOTR ripoff and he regurgitates this opinion every single time Shannara is ever brought up, he does this in every thread. You're arguing with a literal NPC.
>>
>>25531381
Yeah I read the Heritage series when I was a kid and don't remember it being much like LotR other than generic fantasy set pieces.

Terry Brooks was very accessible in the pre ~ early consumer internet period because his stuff was comfortably on the Best Seller rack and had good cover art. If you weren't hooked up with giant sff nerds it was an easy place to go after Tolkien and Lewis.

i recently finished the egghead republic by arno schmidt. it's about a post-ww3 journalist who travels through a walled-in zone to reach an artificial island where selected artists and scientists live in a utopia(?). the form it takes is that of an annotated report, translated from (future) english into german (which, in turn, is translated by the (real) translator back into (past) english); see: forward(!). our protagonist, a pseudoschmidt, enounters the stuff of fantasy in the zone and that of science fiction on the island. it was very pleasurable, though i'm highly biased towards schmidt. it's a good way to into schmidt as well, i think. have (you) read it, do (you) like it?

She's super fuckin horny. Sometimes it's toxic horny, sometimes it's horny with a side of post-nut clarity. Has a decent handle on male psychology. Not my favorite, but worth reading. Maybe start with Birthgrave.
>>
I've posted my thoughts here on the 9 of the currently 26 novels + 1 collection of The Saga of Recluce. I don't believe there's sufficent reason for me to continue doing so. All else remains unchanged.
>>
>>25531478
That book sucked ass. Meyer cannot, or is too lazy to, write from the male perspective. It peaked during the dinner scene, which was basically a copy of the original scene in Twilight. It's just Edwina acting like a man, trying to seduce Beau as a man might, while Beau acts submissive and dainty like a woman, presumably because the author was lazy and just copy pasted the whole thing. It's a shame because it could have been a fun little book, if only she'd had any interest in writing it beyond a cashing a paycheck.

To clarify, unless the guy who reported says why they did we won't know. I was giving them the benefit of the doubt that it was for cause, but I don't know that. It's entirely possible that they saw something controversial in the book charts and falsely reported it. For example the /pol/ book charts or the charts that suggest reading books for illicit reasons. There are a lot of suspect charts across several boards.

I searched for similar situations and found quite a lot. Several of them posted that mega informed them specifically informed them of what New Zealand laws they broke. That wasn't the case here. The email I got says "reported and flagged" for illegal content. It doesn't claim there is any. I think it's more likely that since it's just a free account that it was terminated out of an abundance of caution for legal liability purposes. Why even have a human look at it? It doesn't matter for them. In mega's transparency report they say that the overwhelming number of reports are for the entire folder rather than any specific file and that they almost never reverse any decision. Apparently most never appeal the decision so mega assumes it must be correct. It says also that accounts are usually terminated within minutes of being reported. So, in terms of timing, I don't know.

There's no basis to assume that this is who reported it, but they certainly have feelings on it.
>>>/wsr/1576205
Then there's this reaction:
https://desuarchive.org/int/thread/224139085/#224140268
Or recently the chart threads on /lit/. I really don't know and it's only speculation on my part. It's impossible to know what set off the person who reported it unless they personally state so.

Just an abstract concept of finishing series that feels like progress. Whether it's getting closer to completing their bibliography or reading a variety of authors. Just finished Y'Ghatan in the Bonehunters and I don't see why it's so hyped compared to MoI or HoC's siege scenes but I have a few questions.

First, why a fire elemental? What does that even mean? There's like one epigraph that mentions them a few chapters before shit kicks off but it's a weirdly basic concept to just jam into this setpiece out of nowhere. At first I imagine some Ragnaros nigga but it seemed more eldritch in inspiration.

Second, did the Queen of Dreams just orchestrate a blood sacrifice with Leoman and Tavore? Was Tavore aware her side would be sacrificed too? This bitch seems more and more like an active detriment desu.

This archetype is less familar so I dont know quite how to explain it but this is the classic "Mastermind that pulls all the strings" anime character but I specifically said anime character and not villain because he occupied that classic sympathetic mastermind protagonist role, if you know Classroom of the Elite this character is borderline that exact archetype of main character.

And somehow the most surprising thing is that im not mad about it, it takes alot of convenience bordering on contrivance, and it is very nearly ridiculous that a character is this smart and ahead if everything, but none of it has any obvious holes, it just relies heavily on a lot of chance that things will proceed as predictably as the mastermind expects.

Nearly a Kellhus type character except if Kellhus actually explained how he got the information about the people that he mind reads. This could obviously go very very poorly writing wise, but this might be the first book in a while to convince me to read the sequel because of how crazy this is.

No what makes you think that? Tavore's a bit of a retard honestly. She's basically just a hard woman who can make the tough choises. And gets bailed out by the Malazan soldiers competence.
As for the Queen of dreams, we dont know why she decided to rescue Leoman. Maybe he called in a favour. But she has nothing to do with the battle other than that rescue.

>all of Harry Potter and some Agatha Christie
HP is masculine: Harry and the others sacrifice themselves to stop Voldemort for no reason other than that it's the right thing to do and someone has to do it. A woman would ask "what's in it for me and mine?" or have to be cajoled into doing it or has to have some personal petty motive trigger her emotions first

Christie is also masculine for similar reasons: Poirot upholds law, order and justice, and his eccentricities are played for laughs instead of being written as the "right way to behave".

Foidslop always places emotions first, rule and rationale second, or not at all.

I have also heard good things about the Gray Death Legion novels, also written by an actual writer outside of Battletech: "William Keith Jr", better known in some circles as "H Jay Riker". these are the very first Battletech novels, all the way back in 1986, so obviously pre-Clan. but I didn't read them, so this is just hearsay

This is my last comment on the MEGA. It was much more my idiocy that got it taken down than anything else. Regardless of their intent, considering what I allowed without judgment in zboards in an attempt to capture a bygone age of board culture, I doomed it all. >>
>>25535037
>Just reads like a bunch of surface level deductions and then also some complete potshots at psychoanalysing that'd realistically have maybe a 1% chance of being correct
I agree, it only works because it all happened to be right, which is almost contrived because it's obviously right because it was written to be, relies on a lot of luck and intuition pumping. But I'm so used to books not even bothering to try and justify the conclusions they jump to, that this is actually better than Kelhus to me even though its still cringe.

I talked about Kelhus extensively and how he genuinely fundamentally destroys the capacity for any other character to be an actual full fledged complex human being because he "understands" without understanding. Its basically Ziani if he didn't explain his rationale, that would be even more stupid.

My memory is hazy, but the first plot affecting time Kellhus does this that stood out to me is when he told that one prince or something that he wants to make his dad proud or something and convinced him to march to some battle early, a Bakker fan probably has a better memory of what Im talking about. But because of that, Kelhus essentially defined the character by virtue of what he said, not what the character is. We have no perspective of his relationship to his father, but even if we did, Kelhus' conclusion wouldn't necessarily make sense because humans are more complicated than that. The example I always use loosely is this: Two children can grow up with a father that loves rock n roll. The simpler child (no offense) will end up also liking rock and roll because their dad did, the other child will go own to develop their own taste from a range of influences and interactions despite the primary father influence.

Explaining why both children didn't end up liking the same type of music is the difficult and complicated part of mapping out influences and effects. Kellhus would skil the hard part and appeal to the intuition of stupid people that "Ohhh of course it makes sense that X likes rock and roll! they heard their father listening to it all the time!" Because theyre retards content with a simplistic and shallow perspective of human beings wherein nothing needs to be understood, merely labelled for use. Kellhus does not understand, he finds a way to package human behaviour into a box slapped with a label to be directed towards something and used.

Ziani is honestly barely better, but theres a tiny bit more depth when he explains the logic train of why he could expect somebody to act the way he predicts. Which if nothing else, is interesting. What else I wonder, will he reveal about a person with his magical anime deduction powers?
>>
This is also why people who mistake my criticism for pedantism or things not being real are dumb. I'm literally tolerating a character that is absurd and makes zero sense whatsoever without just being an anime character. Its a very "base" level flaw of thinking for people to assume that because somebody is exceptional in one field of knowledge, that they should be capable or exceptional in another. Whenever people make that mistake of thinking, I think a little less of their judgement. Ziani being perfect at basically everything and able to master archery to the precision he did to pull off his scheme, and psychoanalyze everybody when its noted that he wasn't particularly social in his daily Mezentine life, is ridiculous. But sometimes you tolerate ridiculous to see where it goes. But it must pass a basic test of not being fundamentally senseless. Ridiculous things can technically happen every once in a while, senseless things have no basis.

>>
>>25536291
Yeah but thats simple and boring for the reasons I said, and besides what Kellhus did was literal magical mind reading, he cheated like a motherfucker. Your response has made me realize though that I am uncharacteristically giving the Engineer Trilogy a pass, everything about Ziani is truly ridiculous, and the goodreads reviews mentioning and bringing up how sort of empty the book and Ziani trying to make the point that Love can destroy everything blah blah blah, while Ziani's love is still intuition pumping "I just love her so much that I have no choice but to destroy a bunch of civilizations" then theres also the fact that what Valen's does for love is about as ridiculous too. Your point isn't made simply because you said "1+1 = 11" theres actually an entire theory behind why 1+1 = 2. Now whether you refer to the mathematical theory, or the scientific theory, or the sociological is a different question, but you can't just say "I'm doing it for love" as Ziani masterfully explains like an AI that "You love her because your chromosomes dictate that you need X personality type" which is basically what Ziani does.

But the thing is, either the books are self aware of this fact or theyre lampshading hard, because Ziani also notes himself how ridiculous his motivations ultimately are, as he goes on to rationalize that he has no choice. Very messy character actually if you assume that he won't ultimately end uo sufficiently explained, but thats calls into question another problem: I hate series that "lazily" pose a question or a problem to be answered in the next book to bait you. Ziani should have had some semblance of actual personhood and weight to his love by the end of the first book even if you wanted to keep a mystery behind the true nature of that love. The closest the book gets is the poetry stuff I guess.

Well I've already committed at this point, might aswell read to the end of the 2nd book

Kellhus is basically a superhero. He can enter a trance that slows time to a crawl and calculate pretty much any sequence of events to a point sometimes years into the future. He can discern someone's innermost thoughts and feelings by studying the subtle movements of the muscles in their face as he speaks with them. I think the books do a good enough job of showing Kellhus gathering information about people, studying them, developing theories of mind et cetera, that I can suspend my disbelief and accept that a giga-brain like him can brainwash people. Would it be better or worse if the Dunyain were magicians who specialised in mind altering spells instead?

They effectively are, they just aren't loud about their magic. https://www.ign.com/articles/brandon-sanderson-exclusive-interview-mistborn-movie-wheel-of-time

Do you ever see yourself slowing down at some point?
Sanderson: The great tragedy of art, I have found, is that there's never time – and never will be time – to do all the things you want to do.

have you given any thought as to what a video game adaptation of any of your books could look like?
Video games, even the smaller indie games, are huge investments these days.

We're very excited for the first Mistborn movie...How many years away do you think it actually is
Sanderson: I would imagine this is still many years off.

do you have any sympathies with George R. R. Martin potentially not being able to finish Game of Thrones
Sanderson: George R. R. Martin is one of the greats of our genre, and in my every interaction with him, he's treated me with kindness – even when I was a nobody. He truly is the great patriarch of the fantasy genre, and has done a great deal of work fostering new talent, helping the community, and offering advice and support when needed.

Would you ever consider finishing it, as you did with Wheel of Time?
Sanderson: Respectfully, I'm the wrong person to do this – and I think most fans of both of our works would agree. My entire career is, in a way, a response to A Song of Ice and Fire.

And do you think Martin owes anyone the final books?
George doesn't owe people books...I can't promise the end of the Stormlight Archive...I am as guilty as anyone of, now and then, making light of the fact that we don't have a conclusion to Game of Thrones. However, I live in a glass house, as I have a book (The Rithmatist) that I've promised fans a sequel to for as long as people have been waiting for George's next volume.

Thinking of stoppjng Engineer Trilogy early and just moving on to ASOIAF, I just have this weird feeling the story is not going to be worth it, that guy yesterday he responded to my excuse making of Ziani and why he's not as bad as Kellhus made me think about it more and about how much of the book I was making excuses in my head for. And I don't like making excuses for books, thats what kept me reading Sun Eater longer than I should have.

But I'm also tired of giving up on books. I've ended 2 halfway through. And I still debate sometimes going back to Dandelion Dynasty just because of its reputation, even though my criticisms of it were valid. Sometimes I wonder if I'm just expecting too much from books. But that doesn't make sense because although out of the hundreds of TV shows I have ever watched, I can only personally consider 3 to have been well written. Even within those shows I have tolerated bad writing. The problem isn't merely bad writing, its the lack of a counterbalance of good writing to tolerate justifying the bad writing. So much of Howling Dark was just straight up garbage. Bad. Shallow, and fucking Stupid. I will never forget how much it just kept butchering the Ship of Theseus.

Too many of these series rely on the basic intuition of near subhuman readers desire to merely occupy a distinct world regardless of whether it justifies itself and any depth. They just want some garbage to watch pass by, in written form. Hadrian's fake garbage shallow relationship drama where he gets with some random soldier girl in book 2, and we're left wondering in the beginning of the book and by the end, what the fuck he ever loved her for? It has all the "beats" of some shitty love story Kissing, Crying, Saying "I'm Sorry" after you betray their trust". Feeling Guilty. But none of it had any actual weight to it because their relationship lasts on page for like 30 combined pages, and then the aftermath is dedicated to like 5 pages towards the end, then immediately forgotten and replaced by his equally shitty relationship with whatever that red hair bitch's name is where the relationship is effectively forced by sheer proximity of being in eachothers space for extended periods, and the kind of retarded stakes that makes a character go "I don't want to see you hurt!" Fucking contrived. Atleast they have their gay alien civilization study to relate over, but that doesn't demand love, friendship at most. I can see the questions already "What would demand love then?" Thats not the point. I can think of a dozen depictions of stories where the characters are already in a relationship before the reader knows any of the characters and despite that the love expressed clearly has weight to it. Hadriand and Red Hair bitch just "love" because they fought together and helped eachother. That makes the relationship seem, like they were just slapped together because the main character needed a love interest as is par the course for the generic young hero story.

Yes.

Stop reading entirely.

You ever read a book later in the series that makes you bump an earlier book up a star?

No.

>>25537973
No, but it sounds like you did, so spit it out.

Makes no sense if the self fulfilling prophecy was right, every single book I read would be great, because I expected and wanted everyone of them to be.

Apparently not based on your actual posts.

No, I'm not done with it yet and don't want spoilers.

Yes, I've done it both ways. Half-stars are hedges for that.

I must say though, this KJ parker fella sets up questions and mysteries pretty well. Got me wondering why the fuck Sulfur matters so much to a soot covered woman working in a beehive shaped building with a chimney (these are nearly the book's own words) but then again, that could just end up being a result of my ignorance of whatever is trying to be communicated there and when it gets to it, its not actually as interesting as it sounded. We'll see I guess, made me want to read the next chapter atleast.

A class based system with no maneuverability where the protag has to hide amongst the ranks of the higher classes, who all might as well be walking gods due to enhancement etc, with the aim of fucking the system

Problem is, I don't have enough books to look forward to reading and not disappointing to drop books like that. I will drop series' no matter what though, the concept if serial fantasy is almost manipulative and exploitative.

Also I don't dislike Engineer Trilogy Book 2 per se...its just that I don't expect it to turn out good, deep, and complex. The similarities to Kellhus, though better done, triggered a red flag of understanding in how the characters are written. I almost see it perfectly now, its nearly the exact same as Second Apocalypse, characters determined so merely by their circumstances and upbringing, that some genius can predict everything they'll do and exploit them because they're nothing else. The difference is that Second Apocalypse was slightly more explicit about that. This is going to be another series where the motivations are so simple they almost aren't comprehensible "Why did you bring your army to an active invasion of your own enemy, to try and relieve that enemy from that invasion, therefore putting your country in conflict with the invading army that you can't beat?" Well the answer is "love" of course. See what I mean? Its so simple it might aswell not mean anything, and I say this while acknowledging that Valens and Veatriz' relationship is just barely better developed and understandable than Hadrian and...whats red hair conveniently competent tsundere's name again? Whatever.

Finished The Blade Itself. I like the characters, but by the end it was a real slog. I don't think I'll be continuing with the trilogy for now.

Shall I try some of the forbidden fruit next? BaKKKer? Where to start with him?

how many minutes do you read a chapter on average? I'm very slow, I read one chapter around 20 min or so or even more

Depends on the chapter length, the book, what's happening... descriptions bore the fuck out of me and increase my urge to tab-out and check the Internet.

Any good noblebright powerfantasies? I just want a plot about Biggus Dickus the boy scout paladin of light going around dealing with all sorts of dastardly schemers and vile rogues with complete sincerity and somehow his goodness always triumphs completely over the grimdarkness of everything else.
>>
>>25539242
Nah, for real though. It's just useless padding, it adds nothing to the story. I get it if the place is remarkable, like the hero was looking for this place the entire book and now here it is!! but most of the time it's just, here's a page worth of description for this hill where they stopped to have breakfast.
>>
>>25539138
Heh, just started this book, about 25% in.
The only thing that bothers me is past tense, other than that seems good.

Okay, I've picked up The White Luck Warrior again after being away from the series for six months or so, long enough to almost forget the plot and characters and what they're doing, I'm about 83 pages in, the Not-So-Free People's Alliance is on the march against the forces of Not-Mordor, the Not-Fellowship is currently slogging through Not-Murkwood and are just about to get attacked by the pale white Not-Orcs. They recently escaped Not-Moria and fought Not-Orcs and Not-Trolls and narrowly escaped Not-Smaug but I honestly don't remember fuckall about what happened in Not-Moria (it was that boring) currently Not-Gandalf is trying to teach female Not-Frodo about the hidden powerful curse she carries. A whole lot of nothing has happened. Not-Aragorn just gutted a member of the Not-Fellowship (Not-Pippin I guess) for crying in his sleep (EDGY AS FUCK!) and they're currently headed for... The Not-So-Lonely Mountain for... the Sword (sorry, staff) of... Not-Shannara (I don't fucking remember) because supposedly its the only thing that can stop No-Sauron from returning and fucking up Middle Earth... Oops... *COUGH* "Ërwa" it's all VERY DEEP and DARK and TOTALLY ORIGINAL and the last half a dozen books have TOTALLY NOT been a complete and total waste of my fucking time.

*YAWN* I... I can't wait to see what happens next.. I wonder what happened to Not-Conan of the Not-Mongols... *YAAAAWN* I don't... don't really remember what happened to him... I wonder what "What-if-Galadriel/Arowyn but insufferable prostitute" is doing too... *YAAAAAWNNN* I... I guess I'll just have to read on and... f-find out...
>>
>>25539257
spoiler: Nothing fucking happens.

When I started, someone told it was supposed to be grimdark and everyone's a stupid idiot that dies, but really it's not even grim, none of the major characters die, nothing particularly fucked up happens to them either.
