=READ THE GUIDE=

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions, as there is a chance it has already been answered there.

For the unclear, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here!
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!

And don't forget to report shitposting and spam.

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post images whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting images.

>Why are my pictures sideways?
4chan strips EXIF data from images when they're uploaded to the site from your phone, including the orientation display tag. To fix this, save your images separately, or use an app that will rotate and save the images for you.

== NIGHTMARE GROUPBUILD ==

Build a mecha encompassing different aspects of the horror genre. Examples include
>A mecha that incorporates general horror tropes from literature, film, and anime
>A corrupted version of an existing mecha/robot through magical, biological, or alien means (ie Symbiotes, parasites, Daemonic possession)
>Organic mecha (ie Evangelions) and monsters from /m/-related media (ie: the BETA from Muv-Luv)
>A mecha that draws inspiration from various demons or monsters from different mythologies and religions.

Submit your entries to gunplaplamo@gmail.com , include at least 5 finished pics and any WIP pics you took while working on your entry, as well as a brief description of your build.

you can get nice gold metallics but nothing that looks exactly the same as electroplated kits

>>22908264
but why even get a transparent kit in the first place if you'll use opaque paint? they're more expensive and ""exclusive"" kits and the plastic quality is worse than normal styrene (harder and more brittle etc)

>>
>>22908266
Not a single statement in your post is true. You can get perfect metallic without electroplating if you're skilled enough. Clear kits cost the same as regular kits if you buy them directly from Bandai. Just because your shitty local store charges more for them doesn't mean that's the norm. And the plastic quality is exactly the same. It's not brittle and nobody has ever proven this claim. I've painted several clear kits and never ran into a single issue.

>It's not brittle and nobody has ever proven this claim. I've painted several clear kits and never ran into a single issue.
anon, you can tell at a glance that the bandai clear plastic is harder if you've ever used nippers or a hobby knife on it (that's exactly why godhands say not to use their expensive shit on it)
harder plastics are inherently more brittle, more likely to crack if a joint is too tight etc. although bandai engineering is godlike so you won't have fitment/tightness problems like that in the first place unless you fuck up the joints by thickening them with too many layers of paint.
>You can get perfect metallic without electroplating if you're skilled enough
I would love to see some examples of this if you have links or videos. Paint is a lot better than basic metallic coating for sure but I haven't yet seen any custom paintjobs that outshine the finish on stuff like the fancy new plated RG akatsuki.

>>
>>22908294
So Bandai can get you buying the hair sets, faceplate sets, or body sets for extra head or head accessories. Or just an Acerby.
>>
>>22908369
Yeah have you considered a brush? You only need a wash for the panel line half too.
>>
>>22908074
You can't get the exact same thing but you can get close with clear paints. Something like a yellow/brown mix over chrome
>>
>>22908374
i prefer soft-tipped marker for very small parts because it has some hardness inside the tip unlike brush which is completely soft

>>
>>22908074
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9gQH8RM1z6o
This is just one way, but there are a lot of steps to it.
1. Gloss black base
2. Chrome on top
3. Clear brown+yellow
4. Lock it in with gloss clear coat

There's also the electroplate method, which involves powder and all sorts of other stuff, but it's a lot more setup (even though I think it's supposed to be more foolproof).

>>22908368
Honestly, that's something you could replicate with a 3D printer and a few knockoff display stands. And I'm sure I've seen similar third party expansion sets that you can buy without pre-ordering months in advance.

Frankly, that is likely not something designed for model kits. Or for coming out of an airbrush. I never even heard of that brand before now, so it's likely that it's not formulated for model painting to begin with.

Do godhands really simplify the process to just snip off the runner, snip off the excess? My xurons have dulled to the point they slip off trying to snip any gates so I'm debating whether to just replace them with something similar or pay the huge price for the godhands
>>
>>22908539
Godhands are great but even if you cut the nub off at the surface of the part, which you shouldn't do anyway, you'll still have to clean the surface up. If you're not painting a kit then using a decent pair of nippers & finishing it with a glass file will give the best results with the least amount of effort. If you're painting then cutting it close and finishing it with sanding paper will do since you need to prep the surface for painting anyway. Personally I'd buy the dspiae 3.0 nippers. They're way cheaper than godhands and are like 90% as good.
>>
>>22908539
They're worth it in my experience, they've lasted me a long time now and probably a hundred kits. I don't have much experience with any other single bladed nipper but from what I've seen most of the competitors are fine.

I am currently in the greater Tokyo area looking for a RG RX78-2 (and the Best Mecha Collection RX78-2 Revival version). Last week on Saturday I saw some RG 2.0s at AmiAmi in Akhihabara but I wanted to buy it at the Gundam Base Tokyo, only to find out that I can't enter that shop on the weekend without a raffle ticket. Yesterday I went to Akhihabara again and searched at the Gundam speciality shop, AmiAmi, Yellow Submarime, Bic Camera and Yodabashi Camera, but came up empty handed. I am thinking of trying the Gundam Base again on Monday afternoon when one can hopefully enter without a ticket. Any recommendations where I could find these kits would be greatly appreciated. I feel like an idiot for not grabbing the 2.0 when I had the chance.

You'll be able to go to the gundam base on a weekday without needing a ticket. It's always packed on the weekends so avoid it because the wait times can be 2-4hrs. Gunpla prices in Tokyo are absolutely fucked right now for anything other than retail kits and you should avoid Akihabara for buying things in general. Try Nakano broadway, it's a bit better than Akihabara.

Beam is essentially heat damage but far ranged. The reason why anti beam material or coating works is because they deflect the long ranged beam, not entirely resist it. This is why beam saber and heat weapon can cut through gundarium or any anti beam coating. They can't bounce off something with both blunt physical force and heat applied.

So that's how they have so much pbandai stuff

Back then, the Brit sold actual crack to the Chinese. Nowadays, they are selling plastic crack to the Chinese. Something never change.
>>
>>22909613
There's a lot of stores in the UK run by people originally from hong-kong or have family still there. I assume you're talking about ilovegunpla. He lives in the UK and has stock in the UK but he's buying it from Hong-Kong rather than through traditional suppliers.
>>
>>22909631
If you know about Honkong, it was UK's colony for 99 years. Hongkong's culture and even down to their birth names are influenced by UK. Even until now, there is still a disdain toward mainland Chinese amongs Hongkong people, the lifestyle, the culture and most of all, political belief are all so different.
>>
>>22909641
I'm aware. I live in the UK.
>Even until now, there is still a disdain toward mainland Chinese amongs Hongkong people
I'm aware. It was only in 2020 that the CCP forcibly removed members of their government.

Do you want a revive HG of the GP01 and GP01 FB? It's more or less gonna be an excuse to make an HG GP04 and hopefully the GP00 Blossom, regardless of both becoming P-Bandai (I will get the GP04 to kitbash with the Full Burnern for obvious reasons).
>>
>>22909644
Kinda unreal how UK nowadays don't seem to be that different compares to PRC. Both seems like dystopian nightmares for anyone who lives there.
>>
>>22909646
Bandai should revive old HGs using Seed Freedom's joints. They are fairly strong and sturdy.

The SMP is stupidly expensive and a messy partsformer, I'd rather have a non-transformable fully possable banpreios.
>>
>>22909732
I think the price has more to do with the fact that it has the same scale as a Perfect Grade. The only way that can make cheaper is to shrink it down.
>>
>>22909714
Anyone else got complete 180 on their designs? At first I've hated both of them, then they grew on me a bit and I thought that they're alright but I'd change a lot of aspects, and now I like them as is.
>>
>>22909714

honestly as much as I like the designs, they just look awful next to other kits. I think I'm just gonna paint some GTO Zakus in their colors instead.

>>

I still think of them to be ugly as designs. But as a product that i can build and hold in my hands, i like them. Same feeling i have for military kits. Boring on paper but cool as physical.

GTO feels like a bastardization of existing designs. Atleast with Yamane's rendition, they feel like their own thing.

Is there any way to make stickers a bit more bearable to use? I've always had this innate hatred of attempting to use it them and would always try to pen in eye details or wing effects just to avoid faffing around with them. Heck, it's a large reason I've avoided kits like Sazabi cause I'm too scared off of trying to faff around with the amount of stickers on the sheet.

how come vallejo, gaia etc don't sell a set of base/primary color paints for mixing, like the kind they sell for real artists who know how to use a palette? I dont want 999 different branded paint pots with "char's bellend red" or "slaanesh cum yellow"
it looks like jumpwind does at least
>>
>>22910059
Most people just continue using them but for general sprue cutting. You probably don't have the tools to sharpen them at home so you'd probably have to take them to a hardware store or some shit and pay someone to do it for you.
>>
>>22910064
They do, Vallejo at least. There are few sets of "base" or thematic colors. Reason for selling multitude of different shades is ensuring predictable repetition instead of having slightly different mix each time. It's just more convient to only mix for shadow-highlight transition. Some shades are also very difficult to properly acquire with mixing.
>>
>>22910064
different demographic of user

art autists know they can mix colors to get what they want and it's a part of the creative process for them, 40k and other fucks just want a specific colour because they're mainly interested in the end result more than anything else and hate the idea of mixing because it'll be a "waste" of paint and a "waste" of time, and will even display dozens upon dozens of bottles of paints on stands/holders/shelves like a goddamn trophy wall or something

I guess for boomers there is also the element of hyper realism obsession.
there are scale modelers who do shit like go out and take 200 pictures of an actual tank in a museum from different angles to get the panel lines perfect, so of course they want to buy a pre mixed color that's "exactly right" rather than mix it themselves and be off by 0.1%

No, boomers mostly use tamiya paint since they mostly build Tamiya kits, which is one of the best military kit manufacturer atm. I stalk their forum sometimes and they do get creative with the paint, especially tank builds with additonal pouches. But they do get super autistic and make sure the details are right. Jokes aside, without these boomers, gunpla modeling hobby wouldn't exist ( Alot of military kits dated way back at the 60s, actual ancient stuff ).

I believe their method is the basis for Gunplafags's method. The actual differences is how they don't turn their tank builds into weird scifi kitbashes, but buidling them into recreation of reference photos instead. Also from what i have heard and saw, building a military kit is an unpleasant experience.

The GTO HG zakus are the best on panel lines and accessories. Articulation and construction are A++.

The RG zakus have some incredibly terrible front skirts. Everything else on them is great. The piping can be tedious but it almost always is. I made the standard MS version and the PenisBandai minelayer version. I found a pose I liked and just glued the front skirts into their final resting place. Otherwise they pop off constantly.

Side note, the bootleg GTO Dom and the black tristars zakus are great. The bootleg molds are basically equal to bandai rn and I got waterslides with both for way cheaper.

Side note 2, the blaze zaku phantom knockoffs on ali express are also great. I got the white/pink one. A+ construction, molds, plastic quality. If you want a 1/100 scale they're like 30 bucks and you get 2 tomahawks, 2 rifles, 2 bazookas. Looks really sharp after panel lining and decals.

Are you retarded? The only thing Bandai reuse the molds and models consistently is amongs HG kits themselves.

Don't act like a petulant child now that you've learned bandai doesn't put in the "love" to their model kits that you thought they did. You've just learned of one of the many benefits of 3D modeling; it's funny that you bring up the 1:1 statues which are great examples of being able to utilize existing 3D models to then scale or alter them to make something "new".
>>
>>22910571
My diet only consists of bait.

To anyone that has built multiple different kits based on the same mobile suit, it's clear as day that it would be impossible to simply "reuse the 3D model" for the machine and then adapt it to the different grades as you claim. At most, they'll be referencing the same drawing (although in cases such as Ver. Ka MGs, they seem to make different drawings too).

If you build the HG RX 78, it's a very simple build, basically no inner frame. 90% of the plastic included in the kit is either weapons or armor. Said armor is very large, and has very little parts separation. You'll get two halves of the calf sandwiching together to make the calf, for example.

To contrast, the RG has the full MS Joint which was created specifically for the RG line. Instead of large armor pieces making up large parts of the body, the model has tiny plates of multi-tone armor that piece together to make up sections of the body. The front skirt on the HG is a single piece, whereas on the RG it's like 8. It would be an uphill battle to simply take an existing 3D model and chop it up differently to make the RG.

Bandai heavily reuses shit where they can, but this is primarily within the same grade (eg. MG Freedom 2.0 and Justice using mostly the same frame), and not across grades.

Questionable if you build model kits, but you most certainly have zero introspective into how they are designed. Multiple posters screaming I don't build model kits. Multiple posters screaming that it's literally impossible to take an existing 3D modeled part and re-work it, it literally never happens, bandai loves me!

EG is a newer kit. HG Nu is super old at this point.
>>
>>22910609
To be fair, the EG Nu is actually REALLY good. The only actual "problems" with the EG is that it's an EG. It's all plastic, so the joints are plastic rubbing on plastic, it only comes with one weapon (the Beam Rifle) and is basically incompatible with all other weapons that aren't also EG weapons, and it doesn't come with the main iconic accessories of the Nu Gundam (the fin funnels and the unique beam saber effect parts).
>>
>>22910614
Then enlighten us as to how they are designed. How does one take a generic 3D model and then create both an HG and an RG from it? Exactly what is reused and how does it actually save Bandai money?
>>

honestly the kits are so different it would probably cost them more to stubbornly use the same model as a base for the HG RG and EG.

NTA, you are retarded anon. Editing shit for fun is whatever. The real question is how that edit gonna function as actual toys. You can slap a truck on a bike, then paste some beoing wings on it in your 3D modeling software, that does not mean your kitbash abomination is gonna be practical in the real world. When you design something meant to be real, you must concern with its balancing, articulation, tolerance, mechanical functionality and structure. In Bandai's case, the HG 3D model is not the original 3D model. They have way older models made in the 80s, 90s, early 2000s and they have no reason to use any of these, they already did the inner skeleton from scratch so why not making the rest from scratch?
>>
>>22910765
>they have no reason to use any of these
Nobody said that bandai is 3D scanning their toys from the 80s and then using them. That's the strawman drafted up by that retard who is genuinely upset that I've revealed some industry secret apparently.
>>
>>22910700
They looked quite cool, but that was about it. Even while unironically cheering for the Gundam, I was constantly being thrown off by how utterly retarded it and the GM were acting.

The Gundam constantly disengaging the enemy it's literally about to kill because it gets hit by some bullets, the GM changing from aiming at an armed tank to aiming at a bunch of dudes, the GM literally walking past the negro's Zaku and turning its back toward him, etc. How am I supposed to fear these killing machines when they keep acting so stupid?
>>
>>22910768
So, how do you devise two models that are actually completely proportional different, made of different pieces, and have different surface detailing from that?

This is toy industry, not hollywood. These things are actual product with functionality, not some dumb cgi model that you can stick everything on the surface and it can still move. These things have to be designed, researched and tested.

I feel like I just arrived in some bizzaro world where bandai ISN'T notorious for doing stuff like re-using inner frames on multiple different robots. This universe must be nice - you know except for the whole retards that sperg out and desperately misrepresent arguments so they can win 4chan points.
>>
>>22910757
>reverse washing
enamels are just easily erasable/removable without damaging the lacquer paint underneath.
this is what makes reverse washes work but it also just makes them handy for hand painting small details as you can easily clean up edges or erase and redo. that's why weeaboos always use enamels when they paint faces on girlpla or GKs

That retard has no idea how long and troublesome and long the toy and kit production is. Bandai's modelers have to adjust the outer appearance based on the lead designer's redesign and they have to add the details from scratch due to that, not to mention the fitment due to the nature of the product being modelkit.
>>
>>22910809
Don't forget that they meticulously have to fine tune the details by hand before the plastic mold is used in production. Kinda insane that Bandai is producing quality products at a massive scale.

Bandai tried to reuse Grimgerde's 3D model for Helmwige Reincar since both are HG and the result was the most awkard and dogshit kit one can ever see. It is difficult even amongs the same grade, what makes you think it is feasible for a HG to become an entirely different grade when it can't even become another HG properly?

My RG Eva's upper arm keeps splitting apart.
Do you guys think it's fine to glue the "muscle" parts (B1 17+18+14 subassembly/M2/E15 for the right arm, B1 16+19+15 subassembly/M3/E16 for the left arm) together to make sure they stay put or would gluing the E parts with them ruin part of the articulation?

both arms have that issue. To put it another way, I'm not sure if these 2-3 parts are supposed to be one coherent block and I'm just mishandling the kit while posing (or fucked up somewhere in the assembly), or if they're supposed to be able to rotate individually, that's a part of the design I just need to settle with.

I guess I'm trying to figure out if it's just a problem of the kit itself or if I'm just having a skill issue, if that makes more sense.
>>
>>22911177
I don't think I've ever heard of such issue with the kit. Try disassembling and reassembling from 0. And check for any possible nubs left that may fuck with parts fitting

Only thing i'll add to the other replies is that the mat protects your blade as much as the surface. But honestly you can just use a piece of cardboard when you have to cut something, a mat is nice to have, is cheap and lasts a lifetime but it doesn't see a ton of actual use in most cases, it's an easy skip for a starter material haul

Props for inquiring about its purpose instead of doing like most people and blindly buying one so they can have a nifty table like their favorite youtuber
>>
>>22911197
I'd like to add that, if you dabble in paint, even if it's just details or weathering, even a cheap cutting mat helps protect your table or desk from spills and shit getting everywhere. Besides they aren't expensive. I can find them for like, 3-4$?
Don't get me wrong, I agree they're definitely not a need but it's nice to have one on hand if you plan on doing anything more than snapbuilding and they aren't that expensive.

Nub marks on coloured plastic is the worst... There are pieces that I've gently cut three different spots into the runner and the thing still has the nerve to sit there discoloured. I'm at the point where I'm tempted to get some coloured markers to just cover it up.

Depends on what you're doing. If you're painting the kit, then you can quickly cut the nub off (not flush) then do a quick sand to smooth things out. If you're snapping, leave a bit of the nub left with your nipper then use a good glass file to file it down flush.

many chinese resellers will ship model kits (and other shit like figures) without the original box because it lets them use use a smaller and cheaper shipping box.
some will give you the choice to pay a few dollars extra to ship with or without the box.
JMS does have a box, the middleman you bought from just threw it out.
>>
Are the ray studio chisels and tools actually any good? Like are they comparable to BMC or sab?
>>
>>22911598
are you good enough with a chisel to know the difference yourself
>>
>>22911596
The fucking chinamen. I knew it.
>>
>>22911598
they're rebranded made-in-china tools so no they are not fucking SAB level
at $27 usd each they cost about as much though
>>
>>22911600
I'm okay with them, nothing special. I definitely notice the difference between the one SAB chisel I have and the madworks I have the set of, cuts through the plastic much easier.
>>
>Check yesterday and see that the Turn A MG is in stock in a couple of places
>Decide to wait for black friday so I can buy it along with a bunch of other things
>Check today and it is out of stock in both places
>End up paying more than I would have today out of fear that it will be gone everywhere by BF

So this is the FOMO that people speak of. At least the UC stuff is easier to get a hold of from Bandai or chinks.
>>
>>22911672
For the foreseeable future if a kit comes out that you want, outside of common kits that get reprinted every 1-2months, you need to buy it right away or risk not seeing it again for years. Maybe it'll change with the new factory but I would assume it won't.
>>
based chinkoids dabbing on box hoarders
>>
how does 3rd party retail p-bandai work? How do they get them? i want to know if i can anticipate a kit coming
>>
I figured i should ask here since i got burned by Alclad a while back but anyone here have any experience with Splash Paints?
I'm mostly wondering if it's not gonna come off as as soon as i try to clean enamel panel lines or some other issue I'm not considering, I got limited options for paint outside of tamiya where i live and i liked their indigo blue.
>>
>>22911711
Do you mean when a retail shop sells P-Bandai stuff? They just order it from P-Bandai and mark it up on their shelves.

If you mean weird stuff like 7-Eleven colored PG Unicorn, that's just exclusive deals that they sign with Bandai, you don't want that shit anyways.
>>
>>22911727
>They just order it from P-Bandai and mark it up on their shelves.
ah so it follows asia's pbandai rotations
>>
>>22911694
but i need to cut out the top art on the box so i can file it away with my manuals...

I've been giving it some thought the last few days and this seems to be the best idea. Pretty much every Groupbuild so far has been 3 month at minimum asides from the very first which was only two months, and if there was no extension then this one would be over in only 2 and a half months. Three weeks gives us another half of a month plus the obligatory extension that somehow always get added near the end of the builds.
